Being an RC F owner I have no dog in the pending Supra vs. Z fight BUT there’s gonna be some nasty tuned Z’s on the road once the tuner crowd gets a hold of them .. can’t wait!

Indeed but the engine has been around since 2015. pretty much know what to expect from it as far as upgrades on stock turbos. should be competitive with supra with similar mods. The Z platform will probably drive more parts development for the vr30 engine than the Q50/60 did though

Heat exchanger, full down pipe , exhaust on a 93 tune made 430 hp . That’s what I did to my q50 before I went E85

@@revmatchtv on E85 I made 500 wheel and 551 wheel torque . You would need to upgrade the high pressure and low pressure fuel pump and injectors

My MKIV supra was BONE stock when i got it 2 yrs ago. I did the basic bolt ons, high flow intake, full 3.5 inch exhaust from the stock twins back to the rear, removed both cats, put on a nice huge FMI with 3 inch piping, removed the mechanical fan for a set of IS300 electric fans ... i made 70 whp with those bolt ons and still have not touched the ecu yet. Allowing that turbo or those turbo's to breathe in and out more freely will wake it up.

@@revmatchtv it was actually my grandfathers car when he purchased it new in 98 as his mid life crisis car. He had a double stroke and could not drive it anymore so he passed it to his son which is my uncle. He had it for about 10 yrs and then in 2020 called me and asked if i wanted it. I was like are you serious ?? He was like, just come up and get it. So i did 👍🏾 and yes i have been told many times how lucky i am to own one.

@@cjpp78ytube No, on older turbo cars like the MkIV Supra there's a lot to gain from the restrictive intake and exhaust systems. You'll easily see 50+ whp at the same exact boost levels (a compressor map is 3-dimensional; the gains come from greater airflow at the same boost levels). Besides, if you're doing exhaust you should already have a boost controller in place anyway. I really miss how easy and cheap it was to modify 90's turbocharged Japanese cars. They tended to run pig rich from the factory but at least for some of them there were some easy and cheap ways to lean them out a bit.

level headed reviews are the best. Thanks for that, I like this one and i like both cars. The non-performance pack Z is speed limited to 136MPH (v 155 MPH with the spoiler) according to one review i watched.

My first two cars were and in order a 1979 280zx and a 1976 280z. I really love the looks of the new Z as it’s a throwback to multiple eras of the Z line. I’ve driven the 3.0l premium Supra and the sound, power and looks blew me away. However the fake vents, automatic transmission and weight of the vehicle were huge drawbacks to me. Now the new Z weighs more than the Supra and even though 400hp is great, I just don’t think it’s a sports car when weighing over 3,500lbs. Weight is the enemy of a real sports car in my opinion and for that reason I believe the GR86/BRZ are more spiritual successors to the old Z’s formula than this new Z.

The twins are excellent cars for the money. When we have so few choices for affordable sports cars, I’m glad Nissan made the new Z. Choice and competition is great for the market.

Doesn't it already have 400 hp? After cold air intake, downpipes cast back and tune you only get 400hp..?

I was discussing wheel horespower which is always lower than crank. Crank is 400. Whp will be less.

Well the tuning overall in the A90 makes it far faster and nimble than the Z4. Heritage is a personal preference and doest talk for the overall quality of a car which in case of the A90 is excellent. Also tuning and upgrades on the A90 are far cheaper and simpler to install. on a V6 you will have more weight, double the parts, double the issues. Now the final say would be reliability and value down the road. I do, Want to the a decent track match of the Z and the A90 modded equally without the tire excuse.

Two guys walk into a bar. One guy just bought a stock Premium Supra. The other guy just bought a stock Performance Z. The Supra guy has no money left over to buy drinks. But the other guy saved $5,600 by buying the Z. If he puts that 5 1/2 grand into the Z, will it be enough to make up for the slight speed difference in the two cars?

Waiting patiently... I usually give it a full year before purchase. Since the engine is already in production I don't expect a whole lot of issues.

The engine has been in the Q50/60 since 2015. I don't have personal experience with it, but you can Google it.

The first mod you need is the heat exchanger then a catback exhaust lower down pipes the stock intake is efficient enough as it’s, then you can either go with a jb4 or a ecutek flash tune.

Remove all 4 cats, bigger diameter pipes, and run 3 straight thru resonator mufflers, high flow intake and watch those 2 turbo's wake up.

The JATCO 9-Speed (Yes, I'm "aware" it's a MB Design, but! it's still being built by JATCO!) - Will be interesting to see how it holds up for those that will modify the Z, and run the piss out of it (track days/racing/high temps).... There's always the "What if it breaks" issue - $3000-$9000 liability vs. a 6-Speed where maybe you're out a clutch for $2000. I also wonder which setup has better heat management.

Deceleration is as important as acceleration. You need a light car to decelerate fast. The 240Z is 2300 pounds. The 280ZX is 2800. And this Z35 is 3600-3700 pounds. It is almost 1500 pounds heavier than the first Z. I mean a overweight pig is not a sports car. I think sports cars need to weigh under 3000 pounds. Then I think it is rediculious to see 1000hp cars that can't run 7s. Hondas run 9s in a quarter mile with 300hp-400hp. So power is just a bandaid for a weight problem. A F-1 car brakes real fast, and its light. I like the 3200 pound MK5 Supra, but it can lose some weight also. The Supra should weigh 2800-2900 like a Porsche with a 6 cylinder turbo.

Modern cars are heavier mainly due to crash regulation. Cutting weight gets very expensive. The GR86 and Miata are ideal honestly. The a90 Supra is officially 3400, but comes in at about 3325 with a 1/4 tank of gas. Nissan says the new Z is 3500-3600. BRZ/86 twins are 2811 for the base manual.

Great review, I came to similar conclusions during my research about the Z and building mo powa💥 [edit: meaning it costs more]. Never owned a Nissan before so this would be my first. Came across Pure, AMS kits with EcuTek when looking at mod potential. You certainly did your research. Also your comparison between the base Z and base Supra is spot on when looking at a dolla for dolla value. Nissan Z is the better choice stock for stock. Even though I am biased towards the Z performance package, I believe the modern/nostalgic look has me hooked, I plan to test drive the Supra though before spending. Just to have a full picture during my decision process.

Not sure if I mentioned it in this video but you’ll get the same power for far less money in the Supra. It also has considerably more power potential due to the closed deck design.

12:27 It IS all BMW .... other than the ink on the title and the plastic badges, its all bmw. Take it to BMW and they wont touch it because its a Toyota .... Take it to Toyota and they cant service it because it needs BMW parts which they dont stock.

Yes it consist of all BMW parts.. That doesn't mean that Toyota was any less involved in the car being what it is. Its not as if BMW had this car (z4) in production already and toyota asked to put a supra shell on what they already had. The z4 exist because toyota wanted a supra. This platform was made from the start to be both a z4 and a supra. What we got was something in the middle of what both cars have been previously. I didn't like that Toyota was partnering on the supra either but it is what it is and this is the supra. You either like the car or you don't but I'm for sure not going to not like a car based on who made the parts its made up of. The Z being mostly Japanese sourced doesn't make it a better machine. This makes the car somewhat affordable also. You wouldn't have your affordable Z now or one at all if Nissan didn't already have the majority of what they needed already in production from other cars in the stable to make it.

Yep, the 370 is a fun car to drive, and turbined to 4, 5 or 600 hp it really shines. And from the inside it looks like your driving a car - not a cell phone.

Should have tuned your 2020 supra to the 2021's actual hp which is 380ish to the wheels which is more like 420 or so hp at the engine. Toyota going with BMW's fake advertised power rating for the B58 is now hurting it a little now that the car has a direct competitor with an advertised higher power rating. Not that there is a big difference between 382hp and 400hp ... considering the 400hp car is heavier anyway but... Some reviewers are exploiting that the Z is advertised as having "18 more hp" as as a selling point for the Z. In reality the Z is probably down on power by more than 18hp compared to a stock 2021+ supra

I tuned it to 2021 actual observed dyno power levels. Either way, it was not an instrumented test. The Supra is faster with my butt dyno, and we know its faster in a drag race from the Haggerty video that came out the same day. Also, the Supra is quite a bit lighter and makes more torque under the curve so that’s a noticeable.

@@AlphaFlight The Q50 and Q60 have been out since 2015, so while I don't own either of those, I would expect the wrinkles would be worked out by now. As for the Supra, there is an recall on the sofware for braking and there was an early recall on the backup camera software. The car has been dead reliable for me.

@@revmatchtv Now the ZO6 is going to be an amazing machine with that 5.5L flat plane v8 na that revs past 8k. I owned a k20 09 Civic si and loved going to 8,200rpm and could only imagine how great the ZO6 will be. I’ve also had the pleasure of driving a 981 cayman GTS with the flat 6 behind my ears, racing around Speedvegas raceway and that mid engine layout combined with a v8 that Revs like crazy would be addictive.

@@UMPride9NCs No. I had my car nearly a year before the C8 was available and I've enjoyed modding it. The ECU on the C8 was just very recently cracked. There's nothing you can really do for power on the C8.

I think its time to switch your Supra to the new Z: 1- gives more attractive content to the channel 2- you gave us the supra dose in the last years in your channel 3- your car value is good 4- the Z with additional components later and channel content will give you a much coverage target audience!

I think the Supra looks great, pays homage to the Toyota 2000 GT. Just too many young folks only know the design of the MKIV Supra and the 2JZ, but nothing else, just that specific car. Ask them about the MKIII and they know nothing at all.

I'm over 60, so yeah I recall all Supra designs. This car in my opinion is Ugly. I am not alone in that opinion.I Used to love the appearance of previous Supra designs. There has not been ONE NEGATIVE review on The new Z appearance. I would rather drive a beautiful vehicle with outstanding bang for the buck!

No way to verify yet, but they have an existing ECU which works with this powertrain. I think it will boil down to supply chain.

No it doesn't, the new Jdm is not the old jdm, these new jdm vehicles are too heavy, the last jdm i had was a 09 370z in 2011, and i sold it for a 2011 corvette grand sport, and one the main reason was weight, the vette had larger and wider tires 6 piston brakes with 6.2 v8, and both cars weighted in 3300 lbs range, now you have this overweight z vs the lighter German Supra, ill take the supra, its more jdm than the z, hell it's more classic 240z than the new z, the supra still has the classic sports car design long hood and short rear deck, but more importantly its has the infamous inline 6 the true sports car engine started all the way back from jaguar's e-type, one of the first sports car ever created, you can thank the Europeans for creating sports cars, that also influenced jdm car makers Mazda, Toyota and Nissan.

The Camaro is a fantastic car. It handle better than the Mustang, but the Mustang is a better overall car. If heritage is important, than the Z is great because Nissan leaned into it.

Back in the day if I remember, the 300z's were still less expansive than the mk 4 from the dealership as well. Sort of the same thing currently.
