The houses with metal roofing look very beautiful and stand out. More durable and will last over a 100 years, the age of 10 cycles of wood composite roofs. Wish it was made a standard across the US. It would save 100s of millions of trees from being made into roof composite. The move would also pull the steel industry out of a slump. I suggested this idea to my manager at Timken Steel years ago and he didn't seem upbeat about it. Great work Thad. Keep motivating people with this positive message about metal roofing. Best

So when will they start putting retractable in the roof for if there would be a Maintenance problem for a safety protection seeing how most don't realize that metal roofs are like Ice with just a little dust on it an NO way to stop one till the ground

Not true. It has a ton of grip even when wet. I was cautious in the dust of summer, but it was still grippy on a 4/12.

I remember your ventilation episode back in July. I see Risinger's house is stripped with what looks like 1x4s and I understand to wait until Wed for details. But back to oil canning. When Matt is discussing replacing plywood to achieve a smooth substrate, would there be any difference having these attachment strips perfectly on the same plane, like shimming and lasering the strips at the rafters? The solid backing can't help with walking on the roof, can it? There is not going to be 3/4" of flex before hitting the plywood, right? What is the need for decking if the metal is elevated by a 1x?

In this particular instance, the deck is covered in a peel & stick underlayment and the furring strips are creating an air gap to allow for a radiant barrier effect. As you said, it will be covered in detail tomorrow on our channel and has been covered on his channel as well. When is comes to you oil canning question, the roof is still relying on the plywood decking to provide a flat plane, among several other things. It sounds like your question is, if you're using 1x4's in your install, why not just go with open framing instead of a solid deck? Is that correct? -Thad

Thank you, Thad. Yes. Is it possible to use open framing if it were all the 1x4s were flat?

You can install metal roofing over open framing, however this is extremely dependant on the application and system choice. We only support engineering on certain profiles for open framing (mainly seen on commercial projects), due to those systems' structural vs. architectural nature. Again, for Matt's roof, we needed that solid plywood in order to have above-deck ventilation, as well as a strong and flat surface to attach the 1x4's to. There are also other benefits of having a solid deck for residential builds. Hope this answers your question! -Thad

What I don't understand is the people that spend 150k to 750k or more on a house that's in an HOA. HOAs tell you how your house has to be. I sure as hell never live in an HOA I'm not spending that kind of money and being told how my house has to be or having any kind of restriction on what I can do on my own property I honestly think buying a house in an HOA area is ridiculous and a total waste of money and time it's your house and you spent an arm and a leg they have that house and now you have someone telling you how it has to be

In some parts of North America a common practice is to install metal roof on top of old ash-fold shingles. Is this big NO NO for you guys?
