If there's one thing photographers need to get right when editing photos, it's sharpening. Too much sharpening can degrade the quality, but not enough can make it look soft. That's why knowing how to use Lightroom's Sharpening tools correctly is so important.

Thanks! A few years ago Adobe increased the default Sharpening level from 25 to 40 because reviewers were complaining that raw files didn’t look as sharp in Adobe software as in the competition like Capture One, who were applying sharpening “under the hood” that users couldn’t adjust but that looked more impressive at first glance.

Brian - This is the best detailed explanation I've seen on the LR sharpening functions. Well done. I assume this is all about sharpening for viewing on a screen. Would love to hear your thoughts about sharpening for various media types (i.e. matte v. luster).

Very helpful. Would like to see more on clarity texture & dehaze. Also, at what point in workflow should the denoise filter be applied. When should the sharpening be applied if I take my photos into photoshop for editing?

Hey Brain, terrific video! You pick the best topics and you have such a great and understandable way of teaching important concepts in a way that we can immediately utilize you teaching! I have a follow-up question. This process is obviously taught in mind for "an only Lightroom" user. What would you tell us differently if we have Topaz (other than check out your videos on the topic!!)? Do we still LR sharpen? Still do so at the end? Any important thoughts that you might share with us? Thank you for all of your fantastic teachings!

Excellent instructional Brian! Serves as a great refresher for me because I quit using Lr and LrC's sharpening tool when AI sharpening in other software started showing up. I learnt how to use it manually in LrC just as you showed here some time ago but rarely use it these days. 👍😎👍

I hear ya. I’ll toss an image to Topaz Photo AI if the lack of sharpness is really bad, but for the most part, I’m happy with the results of LR’s sharpening.

@@brianmatiash I use TPAI too at times. My go to is an auto sharpening action in a panel I use in Photoshop. (Included in Blake’s Zone System Express 7 course.) 😎

There’s a small difference with Fuji’s X-Trans sensor, compared to the Bayer sensor for which your video is impeccable. To follow your steps with Fuji RAW files, you should first use Enhance Details (right-click on the image in LR), then these instructions work. Otherwise, you get better sharpness by increasing Sharpening and Radius considerably but keeping Detail to 0 (and play with Masking). Think of the Detail slider as Unsharp Mask at 0 and Deconvolution at 100, for those who know the difference and are more familiar with Photoshop. I have a very detailed guide on Sharpening for Fujifilm on my blog (and should finally make a video), but I won’t spam my links on someone else’s channel. 😊

Thanks Brian! Excellent! Indeed, when sharpening, zooming in helps a lot. On my iPad Pro 12.9 inch M2, which I now use most of the time for editing in LR, how do I know when I have zoomed in at 100%? There seems to be no indication of that.

Excellent video. I would be surprised if Lightroom only lightens the light side of edges and darkens the dark side of edges. More likely there is a filter, which accounts for a light stripe inside your black checker square when sharpening is turned all the way up.

Very good👍 one question - do you add additional sharpening when exporting for screen or print? This has always confused me.... I'm looking at an image on screen with a host of sharpening/contrast tools. Then right at the end outside of editing I get asked again 🤔

Great question. I generally don’t apply sharpening at the mask level. If anything, I’ll apply localized clarity and texture, but sharpening is done globally at the end with heavy use of the masking slider.

I thought that for Raw files, you had to set the Detail slider to maximum to manage a 1st level of sharpness at the Raw demosaicing level (that's what tools like DXO's PureRaw do). The "Amount" slider lets you manage a more "creative" sharpness. Do you agree with this theory? Thanks for the video.

😂 don’t shortchange yourself! The biggest difference between those sliders has to do with what gets affected and how. It’s one of those things that is easier to see than to read about (in my opinion), so keep an eye out for a new video about that.

A bit late and off-topic, but do you think any “major” updates for LR and LRc from Adobe MAX 2024 will be announced? Looks like the London event was pretty much a ‘Photoshop’ event, just curious as to whether you have heard anything.

Never sharpen your image because the lens sharpness is often better than you can get with LR (LR produce artefacts),sharpen only when you are going to print the image on paper. 0.5 radius is best for high frequency( small detail )and high resolution images, and higher than 1.0 is for low frequency images like portrait and skin.
