Thank you for these words of wisdom! I was self- employed in the auto rebuilding business for over 35 years. (That was a tough business) I could go on a long time telling the ups and downs of self employment. But you said pretty much about it. I'm 77 and still got a lot of projects to do. I still want to work on things and look to folks like you for instruction and guidance. Thank You. This is encouraging. Scott from Greenbrier Arkansas Wish you well in your retirement
Hello Scott in Arkansas, Thank you so much for saying so. You got that right brother, Up's and down's! I like ups better. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!
Absolutely! Top quality is never questioned. It's adored! Setting up a re-pop line of cushions & backrests for classic cars is your next journey. Go get em! 💯🗽🇺🇸
Been watching your videos for awhile now. Filed for my LLC this summer. Went from a curious hobbyist to a business with your help! Thanks for everything!
Hello Bob, I am so glad you liked it. Well really, construction for the next two years, then I can relax a little bit. Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Richard, I totally agree with your philosophy concerning craftsmanship and quality of work. Part of your wealth are definitely your decades of experience including the years of hard work for little money, during which you sew hundreds or thousend miles of seams and stitches and gave you the confidence in your craftsmanship and made you the master of your trade you are today. I personally think, one has to go this extra miles in life and it is not always good to take shortcuts. But it is always good to hear advice from a master. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, greetings from Vienna..
Hello Diet, in Vienna. You yourself sounds like a person of great wisdom. Suddenly it's decades later and now we are close to 2025. Time has added years to me, I guess experiences followed me along the way. Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
Full exposure: I started messing with my grandmothers pedal type singer when I was 6 years old, and I have alway been enamored with sewing, I’ve been a welder, been in the trucking business, excavating business but, I always end back up in the auto repair business, along with doing upholstery work. That being said, you have to be versatile to make it in the automotive industry. When there’s no upholstery to do , you will have other things to work on. Getting rich doing it is possible but, you will have to have several people working for you and I always worked alone. Less headaches = less income but a lot less stress
Hello 2010, Welding is a lot like sewing isn't it? I have always worked alone. My wife told me once, that if I had people working for me, I would not have my 5 stars on Google. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholsteryI’ve been in the same location for over 35 years and I have always worked alone. I had an upholstery shop in the late 80s and 6 people worked for me and it was way to stressful, I would rather be broke than put up with stress
@@2010bigfathen Hello 2010, Yep, stress is very bad, but so is being poor. The trick is swing that equation the other way! Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Bogo, You are so welcome! I am so glad you liked it. It means a lot to me. You can use that too if you want. "Uncompromising Quality". Please keep liking and watching!
I really appreciate all of the information that you share it is so helpful for me someone who just discovered the love for doing upholstery work. I don’t know anyone who does upholstery in my area so I have been getting most of the info that I need from you. Thank you so much.I always like your videos and of course I will keep watching all of them all the way through.
Hello Michael, I love hearing good news like this! Being the only upholstery guy in your area is the best thing that can happen. That's when you can name your own price! Please keep liking and watching!
I really like the videos I am 68 and I love learning from you I am one of the restoration shop owners retired now still wanting to learn. My health slowed me down for a period of time combing again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others.
Richard, noticed the bright green spool of thread , right above your head, kept being tilted either left or right, lol. Either way, thank you for all your content! Been watching for years and used your vids to restore my personal vehicle seats and build jeep center console.....Random thought,,, how about doing a viewer video, where you show what your what your viewers have been able to do through your teachings. Ask your viewers to send you images or short videos of what they have done and you exhibit it on your videos. Well, thank for everything you do anyway, i've learned alot.
Hello Hwy, You are so welcome! That is a fantastic idea! Maybe I will do that. It is nice to see that I can help people. I'll see if I can put that together. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Daniel, Thank you so much for all of your wonderful kind words. It means a lot to me. I really appreciate you hanging in there with me. Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks for the advice I been in the Upholstery game all my life and now I'm at a fork I the road and recently started over My Pops used to say the same thing and I'm starting to realize where the money is really at hearing this from u helps thanks brother 👍🏼
I really appreciate all your advice. I'm a long time car enthusiast and am very interested in getting something going for just before and mainly after I retire. I purchased an older Juki 562 which still has some life left in it. If it goes well, I'll consider upgrading. I'm not looking to get rich but I'm also not planning to work on the cheap. Thanks again.
Hello Yoda, You are so welcome! Really, if your good enough, you can make your own price. The more you charge, the less time you need to be working, especially in retirement. Please keep liking and watching! Please keep liking and watching!
I have been watching you for a while and this is what I planned on doing when I retired my husband and I and I bought a beautifulJuki machine that the hurricane destroyed 😢 so discouraged
Hello Denise, Thank you so much for hanging in there with me. I really appreciate you. Well, there is always another industrial sewing machine out there somewhere... Please keep liking and watching!
I'm a motorcycle and outboard mechanic from South Africa, my mother is a seamstress so she does all the sowing for me and I do the recovering of the motorcycle seats, my costumers love the convenient service
My Yellow Page days were just as expensive as what you paid. What you did not say was that the phone book only came out once a year, so planning the ad for the year had to be right, including the phone number and address. No quick web page/google instant changes. It was a lot tougher to compete in the Yellow Pages with the guys with a full page ad. Thanks for the video Richard. I have used your website many times to get ideas as well as your RU-vid videos and would recommend any viewer to take a look.
Hello Ny, Oh, you are so right! That would have been better for me to mention that. Well, I do my best with my half brain. I have improved a lot and have come a long way in the last twelve years, since.... Thank you for being there with me. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I was in the lumber business back then and the big boys put the heat on me always. Switched from selling lumber and hardware to building homes with it. Never thought of contracting as work, just art. I had portions of a tumor removed from my brain 7 years ago. It is still there but smaller and stopped growing after radiation treatments. Life can be brutal at times but we do our best. I am retired and you will be soon enough. Enjoy the new homestead when you move in! Going to miss your antics if you stop YouTubing.

I need help..... I am trying to sew a red diamond insert in 81-87 chevy truck seats. Basically it's a triangle in the back and a triangle in the bottom matched up to be a diamond full of smaller diamonds. I can seem to get the point correct. If possible can you give me some pointers please
@oldschoolautoupholstery i have the pattern and have put them together but not sure how to do it without the little wrinkles where the point sews into the other piece
@@Daja_Vu1986 Hello Daja, The point of learning, is, Doing it again until you discover the technique to doing it right. The second one is always better than the first one and so on. Please keep liking and watching!
@oldschoolautoupholstery yes I have tried several times. I thought it may be something you could do a video of. Also I thought you may have some tips to help a fellow upholstery guy out lol.
@@Daja_Vu1986 Hello Daja, There is no much I can do on my end, because I don't know exactly what you are doing and what you want it to look like, the material you are using and so on. @@oldschoolautoupholstery one more thing, do I need to use a medical grade vinyl or does a good high-quality marine vinyl work for healthcare furniture?
@@sdevrou Hello Sd, I have never heard of medical grade vinyl. When it comes down to it, auto and marine vinyl's are a plastic coating with a fabric backing. I would use this for furniture upholstery. Check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WLYzglvx0hI.html Please keep liking and watching!
