Hi Martina! A graphic designer's insight that might help you out in the future if you want to print your book and not make it only as an ebook. Your palette of choice, while very beautiful on screen, is very difficult to recreate IRL when printing. Make sure to work in CMYK and not RGB or to work with a color profile provided by your printing house, so that you are sure of what are you gonna get and not have any surprises. You may already know this, but it might be useful to remember when designing.

As someone who is ADHD I need to be held accountable. It's the reason doing online classes hurts because I know myself enough to know I need a structured environment with cheerleaders to keep my butt on track. My creativity has to be spontaneous but the application needs accountability. I also love notebooks because I find lists useful.

I’m gonna cryyyy. When I first got my Wacom tablet I was so frustrated that I couldn’t use it the way the Instagram artists could.your advice on “ you can’t instantly be good at something” and “needing to enhance your skills” was something I didn’t get and I’m still learning now years later! All the videos I turned to never acknowledged that you need to enhance your skills and that’s so so so true! I have plans for video making, and plans for art so that I can make my own webtoon!

Read and watch all the tutorials you can! If you already have drawing skills on paper but they just don't "translate" to digital, make sure you try out all the different tools... brushes, brush stabilizers, different software. I use Krita and David Revoy's free brush packs, and it's SO much easier than when I first started out. Keep going!

I have major difficulty breaking a project down into steps. I often only see the destination and get super stressed about the journey because I don't feel like I know where I'm going. I've started using the Goal Crazy planner and it's blown me away. I can actually schedule project chunks. It's magic. I don't stress about how I'm going to get from point A to point M, because it helps me break down by year, month, week, and day. Just being able to schedule steps means I don't stress about the whole project at once. I love the whiteboard idea, and think I'm going to add that to my planner - I need somewhere to do the doodly, sticky notes type stage of big picture planning. Thank you as always Martina for making an awesome video I needed to see!

Best advice! I was only able to start passing my college classes when I started bribing myself to do the work at cafes (with coffee and milk tea). I felt there was social pressure to be doing something because most people there are either studying or working themselves. I was later diagnosed with ADHD and within the ADHD support group online I found out it’s called body doubling!!!

@PunkKittyWuver

@@MichaelBerthelsen I relate soooo much to everything that was said! I was shocked and excited though because no one ever ever ever gives this advice, and I’m so happy Martina said it! Writing was impossible for me and failed so many classes because I just couldn’t bring myself to write papers until I learned I have 0 issue writing when it’s on paper. On a laptop it’s impossible because I just end up editing as I go. But with ink it’s way more effort to rewrite. This is honestly advice teachers should be giving their students who have trouble.
@MichaelBerthelsen
@MichaelBerthelsen 2 года назад
@@PunkKittyWuver Have ADHD too, and was forced to write with my right hand (illegally) as a kid, so I write painfully slowly to write perfectly by hand. I can type over a hundred words a minute on PC.😅 It was a relief when we started to be allowed to hand in homework printed from PC, rather than written by hand.😅👍
@eatyourkimchi

@@PunkKittyWuver I worked with children for so so so many years before I got my Bachelor of Education to become a high school teacher. I worked at Kumon (in Toronto) teaching English while in University. I did Toronto government summer camps, plus worked at a pottery studio and did summer art camps too. I learned SO much about carefully observing your students, and when I did my B.ED, I learned so much more about how to change your lesson plans or routines to help include EVERYONE'S learning style. Teaching in Korea was a whole new ballgame, but really, it was the same when it came to observing students and adjusting your lessons. I'm glad you're finding out the ways YOU can best work to succeed. And I'm so glad you can relate to this video 👩🏻‍🦳💕
@PunkKittyWuver
@PunkKittyWuver 2 года назад
@@MichaelBerthelsen Yeah most people have no problem typing and it has always been a requirement since middle school. It’s a huge issue for me though, and I just thought I couldn’t write at all; until college when I started having to write essays for in class exams on paper. Within 2 hour I was able to fill a page with answers because of the urgency of an exam and the finality of ink on paper (even if it is scratched out or covered it’s still there and I know what is there so I find a better way of saying it or place to put it later on). I don’t know if you misunderstood, but this would have no effect on the students who have no trouble typing their essay. I just would like teachers to know if they recognize that a student never turns in their essays, that the kid might benefit from the same thought process I go through that makes it possible for me to write on paper, but impossible to type. If someone told me to try it, I would have saved so much money and time. Most teachers just want something turned in and an attempt at writing a paper is better than no paper, and means I’m practicing to improve. I’m happy typing helped you write faster. It’s really messed up they practiced such a barbaric belief and made your education even harder. The same happened to my mom.

I always like hearing real people talk about what helps them focus. In university, I found being in a quiet but sunny or open space was perfect for my focusing. I would often sit on the communal balcony or lounge in my dorm to study rather than in my room. I also like studying in libraries because it makes me feel like I'm an investigator in a movie or something. Lol. Also - I 100% agree with being an afternoon energy getter. On the weekends (because I have a day job during the week that determines when and how I must use energy and focus) I find that I get most of my focus energy between 2 - 4pm and that's when I'm most likely to start a project. I think, without the outside influence of work and store hours or the like, I would be a bit of a night owl.
@madeinbusanjkjm

I wish I watched a video like this when I was in highschool. I always felt like I was a weirdo because I couldn't study with noise around me but at the same time I needed to have people around me to be able to motivate myself into studying. So I would go to libraries where it was quiet and there were also other people studying. Although even then my thoughts were still scaterred all over the place and I couldn't focus for the life of me. Which is really weird because when it came to drawing, I could stay focused all night just working on one thing. It's funny how differently our brains process creativity vs other things like studying/working.

The first few sentences that you said, really hit the nail. I find that a lot of people don't want to be a part of your or anyone's point A, B or even G but when you get to point Z, then they wonder how you did it. And that's what creates this impossible thought over "overnight success." When in reality, nothing and no one is an overnight success. They had to put some type of work in or effort in to get there. Which then creates this bubble of imposter syndrome for others who want to do similar or start a project, but they're comparing their point A with someone else's point Z.

Thank you for representing our side of the creative spectrum! Literally everything you said is how I am. I have a scary stack of notebooks filled with different creative pursuits.. you are the first person I've heard of who has to also have them separate, I didn't even realize that is what I do. I have to hand-write things 1st and then move on to other mediums. I'm a confirmed night-owl. I need a specific kind of background noise. On a separate note, I feel like we don't teach kids how valuable it is to "fail" these days. So much of a completed creative item is a result of skill, which is a result of a ton of practice, which includes a lot of failures. I don't think I was deliberately taught how to fail successfully, but I was still allowed to fail at things, and eventually realized that I learned better from that than succeeding right off the bat. Thanks for making my brain think through that.

As someone who had self-reflected and experimented when and what environment I best operate at, I give these suggestions 💯 useful rating. Also to add to the tips, don't force yourself, I'm a night owl most of the time but sometimes, I want something different and sleep early, wake up at 5am (sometimes 4am) and start doing work, because I just feel like it and to me the environment is slightly different (e.g. fresher air, specific birds sing, sound ambience has a different "silence" to it).

Coffee, splashing my face with cold water and exercise does not wake me up. I can literally drink a cup of coffee and then go to sleep. BUT! Thank you~ been wanting (needing 🙃) to start a small side gig but the logistics and crafting has kept me from getting off the ground... after I've bought all the product to do it so... off to get a new notebook!! 😅

I really appreciate videos like this because I am someone who is still learning how to be productive personally. When it comes to school I'm great at getting everything I need done but when I want to do something for myself it is really hard for me to capture my ideas and do something with them. Thank you so much for this Martina!

Needed this! Been in a years long creative slump and i’ve been beating myself up. It’s nice to know it isn’t just me. Really getting me motivated to get back to creative things instead of work-eat-sleep-repeat! 💜

I have so enjoyed watching you the past few months. I feel like you’re coming into your own, and I am so happy for you. You feel like my Canadian big sister pushing me on to do my best. I especially loved the part about getting all your creative ideas out and not worrying about narrowing them down. I tend to think, “I can’t do that” and immediately talk myself out of something, and it can be a real downer. Your way is so much more positive. 😊

I started using Procreate a year ago because I saw you making illustrations! It was originally to learn how to render costumes but through Skillshare (!!) I ended up learning about surface design, and it unlocked a whole new career I’m getting into now! I love full circles like this and your tips are so legit, I cannot use pretty notebooks, I must destroy notepads instead! Fanks you. Btw- I love the sassiness in this video with the morning people jokes and Catholic guilt (also so true 😅). So flippin good 💕💕💕 Keep it up girl! Can’t wait to see the cookbook 🐷

For the starting and not finishing multiple notebooks issue, I have found binders to be a really helpful alternative. Being able to rearrange, add, or remove pages and organize them by protect with tabs takes away a lot of the pressure of keeping my thoughts organized as I write them down. I can always move around the pages later.

So many of these things I have found useful for grad school! I found out about the best environment for me to be productive, and it's basically anywhere but home. My desk is organized and inspiring to work at...except when writing papers. I HAVE to go find a quiet spot in the library (I have a carrel now, so I can literally shut myself in a closet sized room) and put in headphones and work. I'm also a many-notebook having person. I have a few that are dedicated to specific purposes, but a few that are brain dump ones because I WILL forget things! School and Miss Rona have made my mind like a sieve so I feel like I'm always risking losing good ideas if I don't have somewhere to write down the thoughts

Something I heard that stuck with me: artists tend to dislike the look of our own work because it looks like we made it. We keep hoping that some day, our art will look like some other, more skilled artist made it. But the people who love our art love it because it looks like ours, and they see it the same way as we see the work of artists we look up to, not as something that has to be changed and fixed and scrubbed. Artists are self-critical, and we start off trying to imitate and chase other artists' style, because that's how we improve. But we can get tied up in thinking that everything that makes our work look like our own is bad, and keep disliking it for longer than anyone else does.

I get up early and get to work. That didn’t come naturally. I had to so I could put food on the table, so now my body adjusted and that schedule has been ingrained. I still like the idea of being up late, but it can’t happen now haha!

I'm really good at getting inspired, but when it comes to get things done...GAAH! (that inspires me to get disappointed in myself). But this video was really inspiring! I was thinking to go to a café and write down some of my ideas I sometimes get (I read that I should use a big one), so I am going to do that right now! I'll buy a huge notebook, and go to a café (see what I did there?)! Also, great idea on the headphones, I'll bring those too, for the same reasons as mentioned in this video (YES, libraries are distractingly quiet)
