Excellent update, and my only comment is BRAVO - slow and steady wins the race. And more validation of your engine choice - diagnosing and repairing with the new thermostat installation. No schedule needed for first flight - only a well-considered to-do list in the proper order with dependencies identified, and punch list tracked. What you choose to share with us is pure gravy. Your health is first and foremost, and everything else, take their place and time. All the best to you in your continued journey.

G'day, What makes you think that would be any kind of a Sensible thing to say ? There were Idiots on this Channel a month ago, and a month before that, all saying the same sort of, "Hurry up, I'm bored, kick the tyre, light the fire, and Bang, Smash ; off you go..., quickly before I unsub...!" Type of tripe. If Don had listened to The likes of you, He would have Trapped himself above the Ground with No Radio and a surging Powerplant trying to die from a Rich Cut..., While overheating You and I and all we other Spectators are in NO Position to Form any kind of Valid opinion..., regarding when the Aeroplane might be actually Finished, Before being READY to try Commencing the Flight Testing. Up to now, every be time he's taxied it, he flushed out new, unexpected Gremlins, including a couple killers. Engine Failure in Takeoff on the First Fright of a 1/2 Scale "Bent-Winged Widowmaker" Would be a REALLY very Bad day to have to cope with. So, Shhhh, Waiting is. Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

@@WarblesOnALot Woah ! , take a breath , no one is pushing someone to risk their life. Besides, Anyone that can engineer a plane from scratch, will surely know when the craft is ready to fly .
@WarblesOnALot
@WarblesOnALot 7 месяцев назад
@@streetsmart1164 G'day, I stated my case, politely, and rested my argument on points of fact. I've been following this build for a while and have, several times, entered the Threads to Quash Similar breathless Pearl-clutching enthusiasts who imagine that anybody Trying to carefully and methodically FINISH building a Flying Machine which has taken a decade to reach this point...; will welcome a chorus of well-meaning but loudly ignorant Monkeys chattering and calling from the Fools' Gallery, demanding to know, "When are you going to fly it ?" Advising him to, "Stop messing around and let us see it in the Air.." and even one walking argument for post-partum abortion who suggested, back during the 2nd or 3rd iteration of the evolving Steerable, Lockable, Castoring Retractable Tailwheel...; before the Power-Surge issue, Radio Glitch, or Overheating problem had yet surfaced..., that Don was merely Inventing excuses for not being brave enough to fly. I came down hard on that Cretin. Did you ever talk yourself into making a Maiden Fright in a New Prototype, knowing that according to the original, un-redesigned version's Plans the machine was incomplete and unfinished ? I did that, once. After 10 hours of Ground Runs, begun before finishing or installing the Gap-Cover on a High Wing Monoplane..., and I'd flown the length of the Runway quite successfully multiple times, at heights of up to 10 ft. So I "reasoned" that the Designer (Volmer Jensen, it was a 22-hp VJ-24w) was being over-cautious with his warning NOT to try to fly it without the Gap Cover..., it seemed to fly without it quite well, to me. So, up I went, past the Hangar Roof Up, over the fence, Out over the next Paddock, But once past 20 ft it started going Soggy & mushy, And by 100 ft AGL it was clear that A) that was as high as it could climb & B) It was a long way around the world to return to the Airfield, So I had to turn. P-Factor wanted to take me Left, but that way lurked Poplar Trees, in a close row... So I turned Right, 90° & lost 30 ft, Then did that again, placing me going Downwind at 40 ft, Facing 60 ft Eucalyptus trees. So I turned Right again, Came over the Fence 10 ft off the Ground, Cut the throttle & landed Crosswind, across the Runway. Without the Gap Cover, it had 4 Wingtip Vortices, instead of 2. With a 36 ft wingspan, all my Runway Hops had been well within Ground-Effect (up to half the Wingspan, in this case, 18 ft), And in Ground Effect ALL Wings perform roughly twice as well as they do when in Free Air. So, Y'see I actually do know How Tempting it is, at THIS Particular stage of the Build, To allow oneself to be seduced by the "Hurry-Ups" Into doing something Truly bloody STUPID. I was lucky and I got away with it. Once I fitted the Gap-Cover, it could climb at 150 ft/min...; Without it, Altitude could barely be held in level flight. Carving a new 41.5" x 12.5" Propeller to replace my first 42" X 26" Brainfart..., improved the situation to 250 ft/min, at 36 mph with a 25 mph stall, while full throttle straight & level was 45 mph with both Propellers...(!). So, yeah..., At this point, Don's actual friends should be asking him if he's sure that there isn't anything else needing attention and quietly lurking, not quite yet ready to be relied on, up in the Sky. People giving him the Hurry-Ups are the Dickheads, all Operating under the principles of, Fools seldom differ, Birds of a feather flock together, Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread ; and Empty Vessels make the most sound.... In my opinion, But one May be Wrong...(?). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao!

Just a suggestion on your flap switch. Try a spring loaded safety cover. When you need to operate the flaps just push up the cover with the back of your hand, and finger your switch. Then the cover returns to the down position by itself. That way you can bump that thing all you want and you won't have any unwanted flap movement. It just seems to me to be the best solution for where the switch is. My opinion, for what it is worth, is even if you put another bar there that the switch is still open and even though it might be harder to bump, if its bumped just right it could still be activated. Why not be safe then sorry. As you know, extending flaps at the wrong time could be disastrous. Anyway, like I indicated, just my two cents worth. Enjoy your updates and looking forward to your getting this bird in the air. Stay safe out there. Jack
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
This switch is a two way one. Center neutral, and momentary up and down. I think those covers when closed turns a switch to the off position. So that kind won't work. If they make one that lets the switch stay in the center position, than yes it would work. I'll look into them more.
@kathyscowboy
@kathyscowboy 7 месяцев назад
I've seen them both ways, either return the switch to the off position or leave the switch in the position it was put in. I'm thinking if you are unable to find the later, you might be able to machine the portion of the inside of the switch cover that turns the switch off so that it is no longer able to push the switch back to the off position. I'm sure you should be able to find the correct one though, as I've seen them used in race cars. Good luck. Stay safe.

I have installed several of these engines. Overheating is normal due to the increased duty cycle being applied. Start with a high performance thermostat, ( rarely works), I drilled 3 or 4 holes a 1/4” around the sides. This worked very well and despite what many would think,the thermostat continues to cycle normally. I have also removed it entirely or replaced it with a “washer” made to fit and adjust centre hole as needed. Love your progress and your attitude even more.👍🍻🇨🇦

I thought for auto conversions, it’s recommend to remove the thermostat and use a reducer, or take a thermostat and remove the intervals..might take a little longer to warm up, but it removes a potential failure point.
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
I haven't heard that before. Removing the thermostat completely doesn't work. It will make it run hotter. The water flows through too fast, and doesn't pull away the heat. A reducer disc could work. We'll see how it goes over time.
@thomasaltruda
@thomasaltruda 7 месяцев назад
@@Dynodon64 right that’s why I didn’t dat to just remove it, but to hog out the intervals, leaving the disk.. removes a point of failure.

That shield looks like its going to cause air flow vortex problems. Why not run the intake tube back to the wing leading edge. or under fuselage with a dedicated air scoop? Or back against the firewall where the airflow/pressure is more stable.
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
No room at the back of the engine, plus you would be sucking in hot air. The shield should work, just need a better day to get the plane back up to and beyond 50 mph.

@Dynodon64

Since the cold weather has moved in, the winds have shifted from the west to from north heading. Before it was always down the runway. Plus the sun was a big problem too. Wasn't going to push it. Not worth the risk.@@54378100

When you do your first flight test. Will you do like touch-n-goes, or just take it up and loop it back a few times, whats the plan there. will you increase your distance/altitude each time? Don't know much about this stuff.
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
If everything looks good after takeoff, then the best thing to do would be to get some altitude, but stay close to the airport, and do some stall test without flaps first, then flaps at different settings. That will give me numbers to use when landing. Then more testing for speeds and control flutter test in later flights. As well as other test.
@Conn653
@Conn653 7 месяцев назад
If you're going to increase the height of the canopy, you might consider increasing the height of the windscreen too. That way you''e not ducking your head to close the canopy. Just my $.02 worth 🙂
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
The windshield isn't a problem. The canopy came out a little shallow, but I used it anyway to move on with the build. I have every intention to make a better one.
@Kickinpony66
@Kickinpony66 7 месяцев назад
Those are good SWR readings. Here's a neat bit of information... Vought redesigned the canopy to be more bulbous (taller) on later models. I'm not sure how to combat the sun blinding you. Do you have contact lenses? If so, use those and a good pair of polarized sunglasses?
@Dynodon64
@Dynodon64 7 месяцев назад
The sun just happened to be in a bad spot today with clear skies. I'll work on that problem as I get more along. That was the first time I had that problem. No contacts to try. I may need to get non transition lenses to help out to see the panel better in that lighting.
