Like painting a large Victorian home with elaborate trim work with multiple colors. By the time you think you’re done and ready to move on, you have to start painting the structure all over again as the previous paint started to wear due to the lengthy time it took 😂

Getting the toe out back in order will be the tough part. Then it's back to taxi runs.

@@Dynodon64 I believe that if you can stop the gear at any point between a complete cycle and you can still get tools into the adjustable areas you will figure out how you have to solve this problem. Working with at least 3 different axis points or more simultaneously can be tricky and time consuming. Having a person who can help you lower and raise the gear until you say stop. While you are on the floor looking at where to make the best way to make adjustments.

Don - in the Cessna 100 series Maintenance Manual there is a procedure for establishing your toe in (or toe out) values. It might save you a lot of time in getting it where you want it.

Just a suggestion, on the solenoid valves. If y’all need two, order three or four, as to have spares, for changes in what’s available…

Thanks for the update Don. Because there are so few of these actually complete and flying, the designer and plans supplier just supplies detailed construction instructions on the basic airframe and leaves all the details such as what you're tweaking now up to the individual builder? Or were you just dissatisfied with their plans and doing it your own way? I'm starting to think I was super fortunate on my one build. Thousands had been built and construction of all details was provided, plus the designer (Wayne Ison) actually answered the phone when I had questions. All I had to design and refine was the electrical and fuel systems.

The plans were great, full scale and lots of details. I decided to go hydraulic instead of the hand crank and worm gears set up. I also designed the flaps, and use an auto engine. So there are a lot of changes done. So you can say, I was the designer.

Would be trick to have a GoPro mounted to show you visually whether or not they are up or down as a backup. Mount your phone on your dash.

Recently found your channel and have been watching the new videos as they come out but have yet to go back and catch up on the older ones.... Im hoping to begin construction on a Vans Aircraft RV-8 this summer..... Which I am just realizing is basically here..... What advice can you give about renting a hanger? When to move out of the garage. What kind of people make good hanger mates. Who to avoid as a hanger mate... Maybe costs associated with renting a hanger that I might not be thinking about. Security concerns maybe. Looking forward to seeing you get this thing in the air. I think maybe I'm fortunate finding you late in the build process..... Excited to see it go up and don't want to wait as long as I did with the Raptor project. I found his channel with only 5 videos posted and rode that series out for what felt like 10 years. Plus, the guy was kind of a jackass. Watched him make a bunch of really questionable decisions. Most of us waiting for the crash the video and surprised it took so long to happen. You seem to have your collective crap together and you are easy to listen to. So look forward to more videos.... Lots of them flying I hope.

As for the hanger, find one where EAA members stay. They will be your best friends. When building in your garage, you will know when to move to the airport. Save the move till as late as possible, unless the hangers are on a waiting list. Moving tools from home to the airport all the time is hard. Plus if you live in the snow belt areas, heating becomes a problem.

No the gear door mechanisms were the worst to re engineer. The hydraulic drive was the next headache.

G'day Don, Yikes, You're playing Whack-A-Mole with Gremlins there, and they're apparently trying to breed - behind your back, every time you look from the one you've serviced to the next hint of possible trouble...(!). It seems to be that all the myriad of interactions make it difficult to co-ordinate and synchronise all the Angles of all the Dangles to choreograph them to "play nice, together...". One aspect, which I dunno how to calculate (or test - other than in flight...), is whether the whole setup - once it's been taught to perform the intricate Routine while jacked-up on the Stands...; will continue to behave properly when the Engine is running, vibrating, and shaking all the bits & bobs in response to the Crankshaft's throbbings running through the Airframe...,all undamped when the Weight is borne by the Wings' aerodynamics rather than Jackstands on the Concrete...(?). I had never considered Airborne Airframe Vibration being orders of magnitude more savage than when Groundborne, until I fitst got the Jensen in a position sufficiently high that I could throttle back to begin testing the thing at less than full throttle - after climbing to height on the maiden Test Fright. I was bemused to find that when I pulled back to Flight Idle to see how slowly it stalled...I could not read the Instruments because the Crankcase response to the 2-cylinder 2-stroke Horizontally-opposed JPX having the Pistons moving oposite to each other and firing together was to Torque-twist the Fuselage Boom with a cyclic vibration once per Revolution. At any useable Power setting the frequency was high enough that the amplitude was small enough that all the Needles & Scales were easily readable...; but at Flight Idle when airborne, the Amplitude went right off the Scale. When you're supported by the Atmosphere sucking on the top surface if the Wings, the Vibrations are free to develop and heterodyne if the frequency and structure allows... Which strikes me as making all those little critical Clearances and Geometric Relationships become subject to a lot more flexure and positional variability when airborne and at Idle-power than any other part of the Envelope... All those critical clearances, angles, forces and vectors which have to be PERFECTLY co-ordinated to get the components to do their dances all in synch. when up on the Stands...; will have to do their part in the performance while being shaken like a Rag-Doll in the teeth of an angry Dog. It's going to be quite the exciting day for you..., when you've done all the Gear-down Flight Testing, and it's time to see if those Three Greens will reappear in Flight, after tucking the Wheels away and then asking them to unfold, and lock back down again..., for the landing. But it's a pretty tight little Cockpit to have been trying to wind a Crank-handle around inside of, to manhandle the Retraction/Extractions - so I can see the attraction of having a powered system. And you do appear to have the right sort of temperament to be able to tinker the infinite geometrical interactions into position to be able to perform on command. Take your time mate, it would be terribly embarrassing to have to belly-land after all that work, or brining it in one-up/one-one down...; should it be pressed into service when it's, "Near enough for Government work...(!)". But when it's still not quite right - and any repairs will have to come out of one's own cash reserves - kinda thing.... The main thing is that fiddling about with the finnicky little bits of Aeroplanes is actually quite a satisfying way to spend one's time, making slow but steady progress - and knowing that each bit of the Job has been done right... I was a buggar for rushing things, in a hurry to get to the bit where I was looking down on the whole World ; which was how come I barely made it back onto the Airfield, the first time I took the Jensen up and over the Fence..., unfinished and lacking it's Centre-Section Gap-Cover. So, take your time, track and stalk and hunt down and and bag every little Gremlin trying to lurk in the System - with a plot to surprise you by jumping up later on, and demanding attention. Keep on keeping on. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

Well the gear door problems came from adjusting the toe out. I knew then, that I was going to need to swing the gear and adjust things. So right now, I need to dial in these adjustments to get it all in sync with each other. Getting the toe out back where it was, is the most important thing to get done right now. I'll get the doors adjusted out as well, I will most likely remove the doors for the first few gear swings when I'm ready for gear up. The first few flights will be with gear down only. It turns out that riding an Electric Motocross Bike to Town and back along the Highway is a lot like being permanently flying an Ultralight in the 2 ft of altitude between coming over the Fence, and alighting... 30 mph (Regulated to 45 Km/Hr), with one's bum 2 ft from the ground, watching all the potential Gravel Rash going past 9 inches underfoot ; being overtaken by B-Doubles, Busses, & all other traffic in the 100 Km/Hr zone...; tracking outside the Fog-line except when encroaching Guardrails force me out into the Lane..., two lengths with such Guardrail and a River-Bridge which is worse, each way. But I've logged 384 Km & about 10 Hours on it, now ; so it isn't as scary as last week (!). Keep on keepin' on. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

Last thing you want is a gear problem in the air taking your time with it good idea. Does it have a backup system can drop the gear somehow manually in the air if you need to?

The landing gear is frustrating. The nitrogen gas charge struts are much stronger than regular oil filled struts. The newer 2019 Subaru engines have 160 h.p.. They are the same engine but have been improved with chain drive timing, electronics, and fuel injection. That's why I told you to buy a Subaru so you would have a spare engine.😂 That cockpit looks like spagetti. Makes me hungry for Pino's pizza for a plate. Catch you on the next video, Don!

Don, I thought you had your wheel trim dead balls nailed. I was able to watch a few of your beginning videos when you were working on the gear system/flaps. Kind of tough for me to see but as you know, I fly the model airplanes. The way my rotating gear work is there’s a cam at the top of the strut which has a yoke that does the rotating however for some reason when you compress the Oio strut, they rotate a little bit right or left. It’s probably because they’re not precise as in your system. But the looks can be deceiving and I think I would set the airplane down once you’re all finished with your gear switches and and stuff and roll that airplane forward a few feet and look at that tow in again once it’s on the ground. You went through a lot of trouble Getting that lined up and the only thing I can see you changed was that front gear door/speed break. Oh, by the way, since I’ve been working on my model corsair sense November, I haven’t been flying at all. So Sunday, I went out to the flying field and camp two night and checked out all my Warbirds for this coming flying season +100 inch super cub. And of course on Monday the current president of the United States and the FAA decided to put a TFR right on top of our flying field. And wouldn’t you know during that TFR it was the perfect sunny spring summer flying day you could imagine.!! Luckily it elapsed right at 4:30 PM and I was able to get all of my test flights completed. I will be back onto my Ziroli Corsair tomorrow. It’s our eye for details That make our lives so much fun. Yes I had the toe out set up as good as it was going to get. Even then, I knew It was going to need to be swung to make sure the gear would clear everything. Now the gear doors were creating a clearance problem. That's where I found the scissors were in backwards to how I intended to install them. They were made to be off center to help with door clearance. It's tough to see a one degree twist in the lower half of the scissors.

Question on the landing gear: since they're the type that twist ~90* as they retract rearward, is there an available gear system already on the market that works for the WAR Corsair, or is it something that has to be built from scratch? I ask because I've thought of building a scale P-40, but I haven't figured out what I would do for the landing gear (find something already out there that's adaptable or build from scratch).

There are no planes out there that uses a rotating gear like the Corsair or P40. You have to make them from scratch. WAR sells plans for a 1/2 scale P40.

That's why I had to clearance them. Just need to reset the toe out and get the gear doors set. Then I can get back to working on the first flight.
