Official audio for WAR and Eric Burdon's top 10 hit "Spill The Wine" originally released on 'Eric Burdon Declares "War"' in 1970.
WAR burst onto the scene 50 years ago, capturing the heart and soul of America’s streets with its righteous, multi-cultural sound on hits like “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” “Low Rider” and “The Cisco Kid.” Avenue/Rhino is kicking off a year-long anniversary celebration that will begin with the introduction of a new colored-vinyl boxed set for Record Store Day, available at participating retailers. “We spoke out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes, and turf wars, as we embraced all people with hope and the spirit of brotherhood. It’s just as apropos today.” - WAR
WAR, the original street band, was founded by veteran record producer Jerry Goldstein and rock legend Eric Burdon in 1969. Together with the original band members Lonnie Jordan, Howard Scott, Lee Oskar, B.B. Dickerson, Harold Brown, the late Thomas “Papa Dee” Allen, and Charles Miller, they blended many musical styles and influences. The musical laboratory that is WAR yielded 17 gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards, including the triple platinum ‘The World Is A Ghetto’ and double platinum ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends?’ and ‘Greatest Hits’, and hit songs "Why Can't We Be Friends?", "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine", and "The Cisco Kid".
WAR began playing live shows to sold-out audiences in the 1970s and continues their commitment to being road WARriors, touring over 150 dates a year to this day.

Yes - the production is astounding. Hearing this on the radio and never knowing for YEARS who it was until RU-vid - (I had guessed it was Van Morrison - which was a good guess - but of course didn’t help me find it - ) hearing it on a car radio I never NOTICED the overdubs of the woman speaking Spanish. This is brilliant and obviously intended for hearing while open-top driving through south LA. - beats out even the great “low rider” on that count.

This song stirred my imagination, because the first time I heard it was in Summer of 1975, while getting ready to go to work. High noon, with a few wispy clouds in the Texas sky the only thing missing was the field of grass, and various women all about. Eric Burdon, dropped out of WAR in 1971 after a bout of exhaustion from touring. WAR moved on, Burdon became a solo artist and the rest is history.

I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest In a big field of tall grass I laid there in the sun and felt it caressing my face As I fell asleep and dreamed I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie And that I was the star of the movie This really blew my mind The fact that me, an overfed long haired leaping gnome Should be the star behind a Hollywood movie, hmm There I was I was taken to a place The hall of the mountain kings I stood high by the mountain tops Naked to the world In front of Every kind of girl There was long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones Black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones Out of the middle, came a lady She whispered in my ear Something crazy She said... Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back As she disappeared, but soon she returned In her hand was a bottle of wine In the other, a glass She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass And raised it to her lips And just before she drank it, she said Take the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl Spill the wine, take that pearl It's on girl, all you gotta do is spill that wine Spill that wine, let me feel, let me feel hot, yeah! Yeah! Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine Spill the wine, spill the wine, spill the wine Take that pearl!
