The war for Apachería and the entire southwest, started in the 1500's with Spanish colonialism and first contact with the Conquistadors. That war ultimately turned into war with Mexico, but culminated into a battle for existence against the US military, Mexico, and American settlers after the Mexican-American war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe.
In this video series we discuss some of that history, the people who fought on both sides, the gear they used and then demonstrate some of it with competitive live fire demonstrations.

@PhycoKrusk
@PhycoKrusk 3 года назад
Compared to moon or half-moon clips or speed loaders, they _are_ a lot slower. Comparing like to like (loading one cartridge at a time), they are a little slower, but if you get some practice in, you can burn it down. Compared to cap & ball? Like lightning
@LenKusov
@LenKusov 3 года назад
@@PhycoKrusk Cap and ball's a LITTLE slower with good paper cartridges but not by much, the ramming step is a bit slower because you have to actually seat the bullets properly instead of just punching out empty cases and if you've not got a good capping tool it'll REALLY slow you down, but a decent cap-and-ball gun is surprisingly fast if you take the time to make good cartridges for it. It's especially fast if you use hollow-base conicals, which are undersized until the powder goes off and make seating the bullet a lot less effort, at the cost of some velocity.

The allen rifle conversion lends itself better to right handed operation. The sword is always used in the right hand for right handed people. For the military at times the handgun was used in the left hand and the sword in the right. It just depends. The lebel french 1892 ordnance revolver cylinder swings open to the right instead of left for loading with the right hand being used to insert cartridges. Cylinder swing open colts and smith and wessons open to the left being intended for right hand operation. The right holds the gun while cartridges are loaded with the non-firing left hand. @@gunterstraus606 One benefit of teaching weapon manipulation / designing weapons to be manipulated with the right hand (though I am uncertain if it actually was design intent) is that it adds a layer of safety if you don't have total faith in your force's basic training: If the firing hand is messing with the bullet / clip / magazine / etc., then the trigger finger is nowhere near the trigger while the conscript / militiaman / draftee is paying attention to something other than where their muzzle is pointed.

People don't realize how wearing more in the desert makes a lot more sense than wearing less. If you wear baggy clothes in the desert, it's a lot like walking around with a mobile shade. There's a reason why Arab tribesmen wear these loose, flowing robes with head coverings in the Arabian desert. In Afghanistan, I always wore baggy tan pants and full-sleeved combat shirt, which allowed for sweat on the torso and shade on the arms.

Learned that lesson when I was stationed at MCAGCC 29 Palms. We taught our Marines to cover up everything when that sun came out because the fastest way to become a heat casualty was exposed skin.

Call me weird if you want, but I really like the boomy thud of a black powder rifle firing over the sharp crack of a modern smokeless cartridge.

Any chance of making the content in 4k? These are amazing weapons, it would be nice to have them preserved in 4k.

I appreciate that you both preferentially used the term Indigenous. It's time to stop treating them like we have for so long. However I have a comment: I was unable to see the names by the scores, as they were obscured by a link to another video at the end.

I love to see that the closer you get the more misses due to breathing control. Goes to show how important fitness and practice under different conditions matters.

This is the stuff I’m subscribed to inrangetv for. Not only are we told the history, but you put it in practice. I can only watch so many documentaries with period photos and information but seeing you 2 put it in practice is going the extra mile that really makes it more interesting. I do as much as I can in my collecting and shooting, but seeing it on the clock with you 2 dressed the part is fascinating. Great video guys and definitely looking forward to part 2 and other things like this in the future, or the past.

Excited to see part 2 for an analysis on each stage. Really curious what was going wrong with Karl's pistol segment and Kevin's Rifle segment there paired with match conditions. Thanks again Karl.

I have had this thought before. Karl is prime example of Americana. He has scandinavian ancestors, but cherishes and studies the culture and history of his home, Arizona. Karl is not diehard endorsing everyone to submit, and eat cod half dried / half rotten in wind on beach of some fjord. Many people work in latter manner, but they are not true citizens.

@@InrangeTvThrowing successfully to melting pot (as USA is known) means that original state of specimen must be changed. As an example. US Army during WW2 was full of guys named Muller, Meier, Lange... Over million guys named like that were recruited, whose parents/grandparents had come from "old country" just couple decades a go. Relative of Herman Göring bombed Germany.... It does not mean you have to forget where you came from.

@@GuntherRommel Well I was wondering if they were actually using them. Issuing swords and actually putting them into the hands of troopers expecting them to be used is another story

They were still issued swords I think, but they didn’t really carry them often after the Civil War.

These vignettes (?) are my favorite content on InRangeTV! And don't get me wrong, even though I enjoyed the shooting part I was more interested on the clothing part (avid outdoors here). I for one would like some more in-depth videos on the practical use of clothing and tools used in the wilderness during this era in question. Heck, I would probably pay to see Karl spend a few days in the field, going through that tough terrain on foot with historic Apache gear. Could even do an field test with some of his friends with cavalry gear chasing after him. That would be really cool! Okay, getting too excited here... Great vid!

Awesome video 👍Also thanks to Kevin for putting his historical kit on the clock, on camera, great job 👍 This does make me wonder how "modern shooters" who have easily fired thousands of rounds in a lifetime, but with smokeless, and modern firearms, compares to an 1870's shooter that may only fire 500-1000 rds in a lifetime (total guess, very individual dependent), but with a limited range of relatively ballisticaply similar rifles/pistols? 🤔 Also I was disappointed to hear Russell talking normally in the background, instead of with his "presentation voice and style" 😄👍

Very Interesting! Thanks , Good shooting guys, The Indian Wars was America's longest war from before the French and Indian war to the last battle in 1923 of the Posey War in Utah between Ute and Paiute Indians against Mormon residents. 🧔

This is fantastic, absolutely fantastic - I enjoyed every second of the explanation about the conflict, the detail of your gear, what you had and why and, of course, cherry on the top, the match and getting a good idea for what it would really be like to shoot such weapons. Just one question, if I may? What is the knife you're carrying Karl? Thanks for sharing your fabulous content once again, it is very much appreciated! :-)
