Global supply chain issues from the War in Ukraine and trade restrictions in countries like China and Turkey have led to record highs in fertilizer prices. These spikes in prices create far-reaching consequences for farmers, crop yields and global food prices. Can farmers find alternatives to Russia’s leading nitrogen-based fertilizer and potash production?
WSJ’s Patrick Thomas explains the reasons behind the surge and what it could mean for your wallet with continued high rates of global food inflation.

As a farmer, you really don’t seem to know what you’re talking about. You can’t just magically not use fertilizer, as on a global scale this would drop food production by 30-50%. Fertilizer is a very important part of agriculture because it PREVENTS the soil from being depleted and supplies it with the nutrients and minerals it needs. No matter what you say, a bushel of corn requires about a pound of nitrogen per bushel, fertilizer returns nutrients to the soil to re supply what the crop has taken out. To give you an idea of how necessary it is, before the invention of nitrogen fertilizer, we were using guano imported from islands off the coast of South America to try to supply nitrogen. The soil was so depleted by lack of nutrients from the crops taking them out, that per pound guano was worth 1/4 the value of GOLD. The haber process that makes most nitrogen fertilizer is responsible for 80% of the nitrogen atoms in your body. Pretending we can just magically produce something from nothing and cut off all fertilizers is idiotic, and if attempted would likely result in a global famine.

Working in food supply chains in north America for past 9 years, I can tell you the drought in California caused a massive spike in food inflation across the continent, a drought that scientists say will keep increasing and is irreversible. Large parts of California that were previously fertile and wet are now arid deserts. Compound that with rising ammonia prices for the past decade, especially in 2021, made the situation much worse. Fertilizer is made from ammonia. Add salt to the wound, US/EU sanctioned Russian gas in 2022 (ammonia is made from gas), the country that was the largest gas exporter in the world. You really ought to question the US policymakers: what exactly is their intention? These guys are problem-creators, not solution providers. Civilians should be aware of who they're electing into office. But to be fair, I have not seen any politician from any party address these issues or formulate a solution.

As far as I see it fertilizer is the only thing that can make fruits/vegetables grow quickly but they are forgetting that for thousands of years that humans never had access to chemicals like these we would get it from natural supplies like cow manure, plant compost these can help plants a lot and we can supply them by the sheer number of wildstock we keep. Fertilizer is not the only option.
2 года назад
Before fertilizer were invented in the 19(40s?) we could not really grow our civilisation much more. It was expected that we had reached a max. After fertilizer we have now been able to become twice as many. That is why we should worry greatly if we run out of fertilizer.

A very vital illustration about the causes of events in Ukraine: Imagine that you live in your house and coming out on Monday you see that a neighbor from another house walks around and loudly scolds you, jumps, shouting insults, although you did nothing to him and even sold gas cheaper. He shouts that you should be killed. On Tuesday, this neighbor walks around and loudly calls you to kill and shouts that the language in which all the neighbors communicated before this Tuesday is bad and it needs to be eradicated, and he already has a machine gun in his hands. On Wednesday, everything repeats as on Tuesday, but already you see the burned corpses of those who did not support their neighbor (an analogy with Odessa in May 2014) and treated you normally. Behind the neighbor there are already people who brought him cookies (analogy with Victoria Nulland). On Thursday, some neighbors, realizing what is going on, move into your house (Crimea), and some do not have time (Donbass). The neighbor is already directly threatening you because of the relocation of others, and those who fed the neighbor with cookies demand to return the neighbors, despite the fact that they themselves made such a decision and do not want to go back. On Friday, the whole yard is already littered with the corpses of those who did not have time to move in with you, and your neighbor is no longer alone with a machine gun in his hands, behind his back with machine guns are those who gave him these machines. The neighbor is already shouting that everyone who does not support him and treats you normally will live in basements for the rest of their lives, or they will be killed (Poroshenko's speech is about the residents of Donbass). Those who supply your neighbor with free vending machines are very supportive of him and also shout and insult you. On Saturday, a neighbor already loudly declares that he wants to place weapons in his house, from which you can directly destroy your house and asks those who gave him a machine gun to give him nuclear weapons and reconsider his nuclear-free status. Those who are behind do not condemn your neighbor and probably, in principle, are already thinking about how many nuclear weapons and long-range weapons can be placed in the neighbor's house. Question: Will you live to see Monday and what will you do? P/S Today is exactly 8 years of the tragedy in Odessa. On May 2, 2014, during protests in Odessa, Ukrainian nationalists burned alive opponents of the new Ukrainian regime in the House of Trade Unions, 42 people were burned alive because they were not released, and those who jumped out of the window were beaten to death with bats...

War is never good! War is profiting off of murder. It will never be justified or good.. Leaders need to be leaders and not sacrifice their people for political gain.

Revelation 211Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."5He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."6He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.7He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."
