A lot of people in the comments have no idea just how reliant we are on modern fertilizer. If you think anything at all can offset our dependence on them (like crop rotation lol), you really have no idea how far the ship has sailed. The fertilizer supply stopping is an end-of-civilization as we know it scenario, full stop. The majority of the global population will starve inside of 6 months.

@@jesusthugmusic no he's being smart 🤓 not any manure can be used in huge commercial scale of billions of tonnages like artificial fertilizers also manure from cow 🐄 take much amount of time to break down into fertilizer like 6 months and the cow's Grasslands and cow's need to be more huggge then now bacause we really don't have enough natural fertilizer necessarily feeding 8 billions and growing population!!!

This is why organic cannot feed the world. It would take tons more of organic matter to grow a crop. Crops grown organically would require more land, more inputs, to get the same yield as crops grown with fertilizer. While organic methods do a better job of enhancing soil health, it is more labor and land intensive and yields are lower. Adding the challenges of the war and climate change (droughts and deluge) into the mix, people are going to starve.

Start composting the husks of the crops!!! Permaculture has the answer! And yes it can be done on large scale farming. I advise people to read the Masonobu’s book One Straw Revolution.

@@patrickbateman1660 I guess it depends who you ask and is greased by. MIT awarded Masonobu for this breakthrough method and why don’t you follow Geoff Layton a bit to see it’s feasibility. This is no utopian method it is actually a method if applied correctly inexpensive and long sustaining.

local eco conscious self sustaining food production is the way forward, we should not be reliant on artificial fertilisers. We need to learn from indigenous knowledge and create symbiotic relationships between plants so they support each other, like the three sisters method etc and use compost and manure to fertilise naturally

@@drmodestoesq Its an important question and one that represents the ideology that has caused many of the problems in industrial agriculture. Look into soil science a bit more. One thing you will find is that nitrogen fertilizer is much less necessary with a developed soil because that soil provides an environment for nitrogen fixing bacteria. Another thing is the mycelial network. Plants, Like animals, can not access nutrients on their own, they need microorganisms to mediate the transfer from the soil to their roots. so in a soil that does not have the network, most of the soil can not actually be accessed by the plants, thus wasting the fertilizer we add. Plants can share resources this way and help each other when they are weak, making them more efficient. a healthy soil stores carbon and water also, so it helps more with GHG emission and allows for more efficient use of water.

What they need is equipment. You can grow anything with what’s there. You must change growing areas between crop seasons as well. Teach them how to be better farmers to begin with.

Not all land n soil is compatible and not all farms were thriving back in the day n that’s why the most successful farmer or livestock owners ended up becoming rulers cuz they had bountiful resources more than others

You DONT need chemical fertilisers; the farmers could be trained in crop rotations, as rotating depleted fields with crops like potatoes & legumes (like peas) which fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. Another solution is to genetically modify the crops so that they can create their own natural nutrients, rather than needing chemical fertilisers. The ONLY reason GM crops are held back is the greed of the chemical companies who would otherwise lose that revenue. My first degree was in Genetics, so I know this tech is easy & inexpensive, so the only boundary is overcoming the greed of private companies!

You can't create potassium or phosphorus out of thin air nor make plants produce their own nitrate which has negative electric charge so it can't stay long in the soil

This shortage of fertiliser is a false risk. The demand for fertiliser is a result of 2 things. First the population of the world which needs to be fed. Second, the development of high yield industrial farming. Well surprise, surprise the world's population will be declining this century. This may create an opportunity regarding the second point. As the total arable land is not decreasing, allowing for soil degradation in some locations, perhaps it will be possible to wind back the high yield, high input practices of industrial farming. Do not misinterpret this suggestion as a return to stone age farming, it is not that. Perhaps with the declining population we can look at farming and decide there are advantages to returning to methods a little closer to older more sustainable methods of growing food. This is clearly an advantage associated with declining world population.

I would hope that the world is not desperate enough that farmers could not incorporate crop rotation and green manure into their soil management. There must be enough animal manure and compost to make a more sustainable source for crops. Inorganic fertilizers are not a long-term solution.

Today we're 8 billion precious humans and every year another 80 million net new precious humans join us. Feeding 8 billion people three meals per day 2,000 calories. Do the math. I'm 70. At my birth there were 2.5 billion. Mass starvation fairly commonplace. Since then fertilizer made from fossil fuels first invented in early 1900's have grown exponentially. Today overwhelming majority of fertilizer is fossil fuels based. In addition millions of tons of it goes to crops that we then feed to animals. In the past animals grazed off of what the sun provided daily. Your recommendations are quaint, reminders of a time long gone. Just another piece of the fossil fuels noose we find ourselves in.
