You get it. I was also part of that first post Vietnam generation to serve as well. Still had steel pots in basic training. The Vietnam vets still in were the best leaders we had. They had one mission in life and that was to make sure we were ready. They taught us their lessons and their mistakes. I’ll be seeing my Battalion CO next month for our reunion. He was an LT in Vietnam. I would still follow him into battle today. We wouldn’t get very far with our old asses but we would sure try. 😂

Same, same. Except I was in the Air Force, a few years removed from the end of the Vietnam War. Almost all of my trainers and leadership were veterans of the Vietnam War. They'd been there and done that! We learned a helluva lot from these guys! The hate and disrespect was still going on in the late 1970s that we too would take our uniforms off when we "went downtown," or went on public transportation. It wasn't until the early 1980s, after Grenada, that we started seeing any respect from the public and we could wear our uniforms off base without receiving the same treatment as the Vietnam guys. The current level of, "Thank you for your service," didn't start until after Desert Storm and has continued to this day. Proud to have served and proud to have served with many Vietnam War veterans!

When I was a little girl in the 70s and I saw somebody come home from Vietnam, I thanked them for going over and being there for us. I told them I don’t know what everything was about, but I appreciated them for taking time to be good to our country. I was told by at least two people that I was the first one to ever say anything like that to them. I told them that’s a rotten. Shame that people treated them so harshly. So there were a few veterans that were thanked by me at that time. My parents did the same thing to the veterans of Vietnam as well. We welcomed them home too.

My father was a NCO during the Vietnam war but he was stationed in Turkey. The first time he was acknowledged was when my daughter was in first grade 2012 and the grammar school invited parents/grandparents for Veterans day. Why? The Principal was a Marine Vet and felt that ALL vets should be acknowledged. My father was quite touched and I was thrilled for him.

I spent 27 months in V.N. and when I came home no-one, including my family, wanted any information I might have about where I had spent the last two years of my life. It was if I walked out the door, then immediately re-entered. As for the public, their general attitude, which I describe as pathetic and ill informed at best, causes me to think of them in anger and hurt still today. When this same public wanted us to march in parades twenty, thirty years later my thoughts were reinforced as to how much pain I have retained.

Thank you, sir, for being honest and yet not bitter. I guess a nation has to mature just as we as individuals have to mature. We're called African-Americans now - and I remember when, prior the high school, I finally accepted being called, "Black" - and thought that was the end of it. But it wasn't. It is a shame that Vietnam veterans returned to the contempt they received: "Baby Killers!" I was too young to serve at that time. I knew you guys went through something I could only imagine. I went to school with Vets who had a different vocabulary: "Bustin' caps," and, "Up in the war." I've envied you guys who did experience that hell - mindful that many came back in body bags and there was no guarantee I would have escaped that fate. Now, people realize that service persons - warriors of all branches - do what the country asks them to do. Were we guilty of atrocities? I'm sure some were - yet I believe we as a people have more regard for individual life than many others - especially other empires ( and we are an empire). I've watched several shorts featuring Colonel Forrest and I appreciate your including him and I appreciate his thoughtful comments. Again, I hear no bitterness in the man and am glad he survived to see this era - imperfect as it is.
