"War is cruelty and you cannot refine it." - William Tecumseh Sherman. I am not trying to defend these atrocities I am just saying that this is a perfect example of why he was right. Also, I find it ironic that I am quoting someone named after Tecumseh when talking about the War of 1812. The reason why Sherman's middle was Tecumseh is because his father fought in the war and although he fought against Tecumseh he respected him.

If you really think the Brits had no territorial ambitions you are either stupid or blind to the reality of the time. Lol. This war was an example of a rising power wanting to flex it’s muscle and an established power throwing it’s weight around. The fact that Britain could afford to send ships and troops to North America while at the same time going full tilt with Napoleon in Europe is impressive. Had they been able to focus all of their attention on us that war might have actually ended with a real winner.

@callumwilliams1449 2 года назад
@@compatriot852 What are you even talking about? Britain did not lose land. What Britain wanted was to defend Canada and it did so against a numerically superior American force on multiple occasions. The trade embargos were lifted days before the War but the news hadn't travelled. When it did get received to save embarrassment the secondary objective of the press ganging was put forward, partly because the American government at the time were afraid of the repercussions from the British if they pulled out at the time. Press ganging was not included in the Treaty of Ghent so in essence, America achieved none of it's stated objectives. Press ganging came to a natural end when Napoleon was defeated. The US wiping out the native opposition to their expansion was not the intended aim. I mean if it was, why did they bother invading Canada? Seems like a strange way to expand West by getting trounced invading North.

@@Demicleas We do acknowledge our defeat at New Orleans. We just see it as redundant to the war because it was. Humiliating sure. It is Americans who overplay its importance. Besides, Britain was there way before New Orleans, regulars were stationed in Canada at the outbreak of war, Britain sent men over in larger quantities once Napoleon was sent off to Elba and the Royal Navy enforced a crippling blockade on the east coast of the United States.

Besides the many soldiers who died in this pointless conflict the real losers were the Native American tribes. Britain pretty much agreed to simply abandon them in exchange for American concessions. And then one of the most shameful periods in American history began. I love my country but I am so ashamed of what we did to Native Americans. Sure They would have exploited more vicotires if they could, but no one thought they were about to reverse 1776. The armies were too small. Plus US declared war not Britain, so it was defensive and conservative, not expansive, minded for brits. But not to say we wouldn’t have tried to exploit more victories if they happened Literally their best general didn’t even fight in the war of 1812 because he was busy with the more formidable threat of Napoleon’s marshals in the Spanish war

@@stephenkammerling9479 …. During the War of Independence the British Army could garrison coastal cities. Hold them secured indefinitely. But those made up only 10% of the 13 colonies. Once the British left any area it was insecure. There wasn’t and would never be a big enough army of occupation to hold the 13 colonies to Britain. After the war cross Atlantic trade between the former colonies and England thrived. The British Empire being a trade empire still had American business trading.

You know, if you read the entire Star Spangled Banner (all 4 stanzas, not just the 1 we sing as our National Anthem) you realize that it is a very racist song/discriminates against several groups of people in violent manners, yet we sing it all the time as a pro-America song. Now, I'm not saying that we need to get rid of the National Anthem (since the 1st stanza is the least racist of them), but remember that the (overall) message of it and the flag is that we are all equal Americans citizens, and both it and the flag are a symbol of freedom for everyone. Context is important. During the War of 1812 (to early 1815), we were fighting against the British whom got runaway slaves to fight with them against Americans (in exchange for freedom), at the time we were also killing Native tribes and even tried (but failed) to invade Canada at 1 point, and Francis Scott Key himself was a slave owner/described "freemen" as just Caucasian males and no one else. Some of this is what he wrote in the lyrics while some of it is implied based on who he is/the situation he was in at the time of the war.

If your saying that Canada and Britain won the War of 1812, then your wrong because nobody won. Just because, Canada burned down the White House doesn't mean that they won the war. The war reached a STALEMATE and both sides (America and Britain, including Canada) made peace and likely.... became allies again? Anyway, nobody won the War of 1812 because of a simple fair stalemate but you can kind of also say that America won the War of 1812 since America did more efficiently and in today's terms, America could beat the two nations (Britain and Canada) any day. Lots of people joke about Canada sending its "moose cavalry" but even if moose (deers) are actually stronger than eagles (birds), eagles can literally swoop down and try to get the deer's weak spots. The national animal of the United Kingdom (the lion) is stronger than the eagle but can do the same thing, they are both carnivores while a eagle might prefer fresh fish but a lion definitely meat. So, yeah nobody won the War of 1812. Also can we just take the time to say that the Internet is completely wrong about the wars, that America lost? like the Korean War, which people say that America lost when nobody won. South Korea's allies didn't win and North Korea's allies didn't win. No side won. It was a STALEMATE. Also, if people are gonna criticize me about "stalemate" then a stalemate is "A situation in which further action or progress by opposing or competing parties seems impossible". Or in the chess definition. "A position counting as a draw, in which a player is not in check but cannot move except into check". The "chess" definition kind of makes sense since what i have been saying that America, Britain, and Canada reached a smooth standstill or a stalemate, so finally, NEITHER SIDE WON THE WAR OF 1812 :)

Great story of the war of 1812 , BUT the story of BALTOMORE MD. has more to it and was more important then you tell , you forgot this : While the battle ultimately was a British victory for Canada, it had several key other effects .Not like the men in Bladensburg WHO RAN AWAY. DUNDALD , MD slowed British land forces' advance on Baltimore, had a great impact on American morale, and resulted in a large number of British casualties including the death of their commander, Major General Robert Ross taking out by a young man , and that's what held up the britts for the men on HAMPSTEAD HILL to set up and held out and sent the britts back to there ships in NORTHPOINT. so they stop them from entering the city , MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BALTIMORE. after all Baltimore and Washington may still been in the britts hand's and like New Orleans , who knows if the britts would have giving it back.. P.S The pic you show of the guns in Balto. are of Federal Hill witch was the last hope if the britts got PASSED Fort McHenry. so as you can see Baltimore was ready and waiting for the britts and didn't fail The UNITED STATES
