@@macklenk8888 The aliens caused an EMP essentially which disabled all electronics and electricity in the area. It's implying that whatever choppers or planes that were in the sky turned off and crashed somewhere.

Considering that in the scene that follows this, the houses they arrive at seem to have working power. We also see an airplane crash into the neighbooring houses, and the scenes following we also see a town that still has functioning power as well as some working cars (i.e. police cars and cars loaded onto the ferry). The one question I would ask, if the alien EMP only effected large portion areas of the cities would that mean cars outside the city driving into the city would still be working? The only explenation I could think of is people outside the city quickly relised what was happening and fled the other dirrection OR the army arrived faster than the movie makes out to block the roads perhaps.
War of the Worlds was far more tense and thus scarier. Adding to the tension was that the film came out only 4 years after 9/11, and Americans were still reeling from the huge terror attacks. World War Z was an overrated pile of shit
For some reason, me and my brothers keep laughing about this scene since it came out. Probably because we are europeans. This is even more iconic with the french voices.
Then Rachel starts screaming bloody murder, I had chills as a kid watching this with my family in a dark ass movie theatre full of scared patrons. Lol!

This shot continues to blow my mind. I will never understand why so many people hate this film. If it's because of Cruise, that's really unfair. If it's the ending, blame H.G. Wells. It is action filmmaking at its most spetacular and one of the best blockbusters of our generation. People need to give it another chance.
I think the story falls apart in the 2nd half. The tension really comes to a halt. And the more we learn about the aliens the less interesting they are. The basement sequence really drags. In the whole thing with the brother was just plain stupid. The first half was an incredible piece of filmmaking though one of Spielberg’s best.
Problem is that the movie presents itself as spectacle but then seems to be a family thing but really is only about ray. They shoulda cut out a lotta the close up cgi shots and kept the long ones and partial ones, like the beautiful one with the clothes falling from the sky like snow. Also shoulda increased the cruise character development since it is more about his character anyway. Woulda been a fine character piece.
@@PazBinv1 Genuinely lol. Cant understand how anyone can respect/like him. Kept wishing that he died. Personally I like to believe that he is dead, and him showing up at the end to hug Ray is just Ray's pain and guilt of letting him go creating a hallucination of what he wanted to see at that moment. I think it makes sense sincr this is a pretry realistic movie and Robbie actually surviving is legitimately impossible
This movie quite realistically captures what it would be like to run away from devastating alien invasion while taking care of a little kid. The problem is that nobody in their right mind would want to run away from a devastating alien invasion while taking care of a little kid.
Everyone always says how annoying she is here, and yet that's exactly what a panic attack can look like in extreme situations. Absolute terror and screaming, I would have been more suspect if she wasn't totally flipping out at that point.
But as you can see, she turns into an even bigger, brattier bitch later. Look at yhe difference between the Hilltop fight and the "No Shield" fight. She is perfectly fine during the hilltop standoff, perfectly composed and calm (somewhat). But during the finale, she is a fucking screaming whiny bitch.
Doktor Docson you clearly didn't pay attention to the movie because she had some serious panic attack and those attacks came randomly if doesn't depend always of the situation. She can't control it.
When this movie came out I was childless. Now I have two boys. The movie has changed fundamentally for me in many ways but by far, the biggest difference for me watching it now is that I completely get it now from a parent's viewpoint. It's even more harrowing to watch for me now.
A non-moving vehicle with green screens all around and the actors inside + shots of a real vehicle in a highway. Actors are incrustated inside the moving vehicle and voilà !
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie because of the way it was shot. Spielberg, cinematographer and editors worked the different layers in seamlessly. Love it.
This was a combo of shot plates, CG and compositing. I was the comper/shot lead, it's was 7 intense weeks. Spielberg had the idea and the ILM folks made it happen, the editors had very little to do with the final product here, but they were also great!
@@jaymojamieson I was just rewatching WOTW last night and noticed this seemingly one-shot. Thanks for the info on how it was put together. I was trying to find something on RU-vid that broke it down, but nothing came up in my search.
@@AScreenwritersJourney if you can find footage from the Oscar’s or VES bake-offs that might help. Unfortunately I’m not allowed to show breakdowns publicly, we keep our cards close to the chest.
Everything about this scene is masterful, the camera work, the heart pumping music by Williams, even the dialogue, the stupid questions by the kids are perfectly realistic in context like this. Remember 9/11, remember the stupid questions and theories when we just knew about the attacks?
Yeah I remember. They immediately started to plant the notion it was Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda cronies. Turns out the questions people were asking weren't so stupid.
This reminds me of a video I saw of a little kid screaming his head off while his city was being bombed. This is why I always thought this scene was super realistic, little kids get hysterical and this is legit how a little kid would probably react to these types of situations. Other kids would react in total silence, it just depends. Shock hits everyone differently
Not to me. Her fear actually made me more scared of the tripods as a kid, and I'm still impressed by how well Fanning managed to play terrified out of her brains
Steven Spielberg shows in this shot that he is a MASTER director... AWESOME SHOT... And all of the movie is full with delicious directing details. Like 154thmedia says: "nevermind the plot"
Manny say's "Get out of the car Ray, I'm not kidding, get out of the truck". Also, here everybody in town is screaming and fleeing the Martians first attack, buildings are destroyed, people have just been disintegrated, trees are on fire, and Manny's saying, "I got a business to run." No wonder he gets killed!! ( Just a couple of things that I thought were odd.)
I found it odd he didn't take notice of the scores of people who were running away from the Tripod, or the destruction said Tripod caused. Was he that dense?
Did nobody notice the "impossible one shot" this is? A camera that records the car and inside the car doing 360º turns around it and seemenly UNCUT scene? This is something quite impressive. Nice camera tricks, obviously, but... impressive.
That’s the only car that works. There was an EMP attack. That’s why they pointed out the lack of helicopters and planes. Highways become easier to maneuver when you’re the only one with a working vehicle.
I felt so bad for Rachel the whole time I was watching this movie. This is exactly how a little kid would act in this situation, and her acting is amazing. This is precisely what a panic attack looks like
+Andrew Shaw ya but all of the things she's seen and heard most likely scared her and there was a 99.9% chance that they would die also she was worried about her mom who was in Boston
Mr. Tripod except most situations until they lost he car and got stuck in the house with the madman (which they all could've avoided) so it was more like 50/50 chance of survival AT LEAST. Not to mention whining about your mum in Boston, DOESN'T GET YOU ANYWHERE. Even most kids older then a toddler would know that...
I like this scene not only for the 360 shot but they're yelling and panicking makes it feel more real. Plus they lighten the mood a little without taking away the gravity of the situation.
I remember back in 2005 when watching this and distinctly thinking I have never seen any scene shot like this! The camera was literally moving in and out and around the car all while (presumably) driving at high speed down the highway. Yeah, obviously CGI but just Amazing for 2005.
It wouldn't be noticeable if Cruise's "driving" was on point...you could sometimes see the car swerve right even though Cruise turned the wheel to the left and vice versa
I know it was not in this video but I appreciate how even though humanity is crumbling, the crowd allows the main character to get his kids and leave before anyone gets hurt. Would that happen in real life, probably not.
THANK GOOOOD YOU SAYD THAT ! ikr and everybody ho has seen another movie of Dakota knows this is just the character ! She is an amazing actress and this is acting
I think people need to realize, that the reason the kids are so annoying, is to make you feel as if your Tom Cruise in this situation, with kids all in panic mode and scared. It wouldn't be as scary if they were both sleeping, and they were driving silently.
It's a great scene to create dramatic tension and was shot masterfully. Just don't watch it too many times. You'll notice that Ray's driving is rarely in sync with the car's actual movement...
Awesome editing. Dakota Fanning is also doing a great job at being tremendously annoying. Weak link: No rational explanation why their car should be working. Did the auto shop store their spare parts in a Faraday cage or something?
On top of everything going on he has the only working vehicle. So now he's gotta worry about desperate people, which happens later in the film. Great movie!
@FienStudios I completely see your point. I mean, Tom divorced the kids' mom, and has been living on his own much of his life and hasn't had much experience in parenting, so it's no wonder that he would be annoyed and feel unsure of how to handle his own children when something catastrophic happens.
The only thing that gives away this scene as a composite is the movement of the van is not synced up with the movement of the steering wheel. This is more evident near the end of the scene when's Toms steering becomes more aggressive yet the van keeps on rolling straight.
Your people have horrible taste then. And this movie truly sucks, and should be hated by everyone, and every copy burnt just like the book burning during Hitler's time.
I know it's hard to believe that little kids fleeing killer Martians wouldn't be reading Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" and napping now and then, but it's true: they'd be screaming, and so would the adults.
This whole scene was shot on the Korean War Veterans Parkway in Staten Island. Anyway, what's really strange is the bridge that got destroyed by the aliens seconds earlier is what connects to Staten Island, so I'm not sure how they got there. Unless they went through New Jersey and a few of the small towns/cities and went onto another bridge, or the people who made the movie just came up with their own fictional take on it.
