The most dangerous moment of the war, and the one which caused me the greatest alarm, was when the Japanese fleet was heading for Ceylon and the naval base there. The capture of Ceylon, the consequent control of the Indian Ocean, and the possibility at the same time of a German conquest of Egypt would have closed the ring and the future would have been black.

March 31, 1942, Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, her forces had overrun Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. Now the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army were heating up for an assault on India, the jewel in the British imperial crown.

11:28 The Fulmars have an endurance of 504 km only if you go with 2x 100lb bombs. You've chosen 2x 250lb bombs and the endurance got decreased to 378 km because of the higher payload. That's why they turned home too early at 19:17.

This game is surprisingly realistic with a few exceptions such as fighter planes are terribly inaccurate when attacking bombers and I think torpedoes are a bit underpowered too.

It’s a shame this does not have the British radar-equipped Fairey Albacore and fulmars night abilities, I had to mod this ability in myself. The British navy had the edge on radar at this time if used right not how it was really used, not sure about land base aircraft station there though I know the Bristol Beau fighter was the first plane to carry it. The carrier-battles games show this off quite well negatives /positives.

@@Siddich Really? Ask Bismarck and Prince of Wales how did their last AAA action go against enemy torpedo bombers. I was not even talking about that. I was referring to what kind of sinking power can be expected from each torpedo in cases they hit appropriate places and prove to be not duds. For example, three Kriegsmarine issue submarine torpedoes are enough to sink Queen Elizabeth class battleship. One should be enough to sink an escort carrier according to my estimate. Two should be enough for fleet carrier. Etc etc etc.

Another important lesson to learn, specifically regarding skip-bombing: the planes that got shot down went in slow (~180 knots for these guys). The two that went in fast got bomb hits and didn't get shot down. Speed is life.

The proper procedure for a skip bomb is to come in in a somewhat corkscrew path, not straight, so the gunners have to lead you *and* the direction and amount of the leading needed changes constantly. Of course this is not really possible within the limitations of the game, but you can dogleg them and have them have randomised height changes - unlike level bombers they do not have to fly level and straight for several minutes to drop bombs on targets.

2:05 Unfortunately, the pop-up & information tab is false, Kashino was a one-off design specifically made to carry the 18 inch guns and the turrets of the Yamato's. The three other "Sisters" that the game show; Naruto Maru, Nichii Maru, and Tatsugami Maru, were actually converted merchant ships that bore no resemblance to Kashino whatsoever.

2:05 - Kashino was a one-off design! She was purpose-built to transport the guns and turrets of the Yamato-class battleships. Naruto Maru, Nichii Maru, and Tatsugami Maru were NOT sister ships of hers...they were CONVERTED MERCHANT SHIPS that looked COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

Wolf - in your last episode your sub did an emergency blow to surface the boat. That might be infortuitous if jumped by aircraft. You can just slide the depth meter to the right (zero feet) and the sub will surface. If you have to dive quickly after an emergency blow the air tanks may not have enough time to fill and you may not be able to emergency blow if needed.

If you are unable to maintain depth, the choice between maybe being jumped by an aircraft and certain death by implosion or running out of air is pretty easy … at least for me.

Rule of thumb: 1° of spread is 1.75% of the distance to target. make that “a bit (7/8th) under 2%” if you are in a hurry. 900m? 10° is a bit under 20% (180m), 1° is just under 18m, 0.5° is under 9m. (or, using 1.75%: 157.5m, 15.8m and 7.88m) The actual, mathematically correct, values are: ~157.48m, ~15.71m, and ~7.85m, (scarily close if you ask me), the calculation being distance * 2*tan( angle/2 ) as you shoot 1/2 the angle to the right and 1/2 of the angle to the left … 1000m, 1° -> 17.5m 10km, 1° -> 175m 12km, 10° -> 12*10*17.5m = 12*175m = 2.10 km And 6 torpedoes spread over 8°, 8 km downrange? 2%/1° * 8° * 8km = 2% * 64km = 1.28km … between torpedo 1 and 6! Torpedo 1 to torpedo 2 is 1/5 of that,

One of the things that drives me nuts about WoTS is that attacking fighters seem to have zero sense of formation one they sight enemy planes. They spot bombers (especially), and it turns into a horserace with each fighter pursuing at random and variable speeds, spreading out their firepower. By coming in piecemeal, they usually take a lot more damage than they need to. This can be combatted by retaining tight tactical control over the attacking fighters (target, speeds, etc), but it'd be a lot simpler if they'd just attack in formations. Problem is I've been back and forth over the configuration files and can't figure out how to get them to behave better.

Depends. Would HMS Hood qualify even though she is a BC? I mean, they did have Jackie Fisher and learned, probably the very hard way, that speed is nice but one hit and you slow down.

They have the K.G.Vs, and that's about it. The Q.E.s can only make 25 knots at best, and the R class and Nelsons only 23. Renown and Hood would do, but those are BCs, and you'd run into some problems if you get intercepted by any of the IJN heavy units.

Is the dud percentage affected by torpedo drop height and/or drop speed? iirc, in real world, there were limits to both, and wondering if approach speeds and altitudes may have exceeded optimal values.

If anything you want to have a bigger spread at shorter range so that you spread out the damage and a smaller spread at longer range so you actually hit the ship with all of the torpedoes. Right?

You may want to consider turning off dud torpedoes if the mod lets you. The British had very reliable torpedoes anyway, in reality. Otherwise, well done!

Nope. The Duplex Coil Rod pistol (a magnetic pistol) worked OK at Taranto but generally was a failure. The compensated coil rod, which reportedly was much better, never made it to the 18” air launched torpedoes, was prone to explode to nearby explosions or the torpedo breaching the surface, and in the Far East really hated the heat. Also, the British used many US torpedoes, especially for Lend-Lease DDs and air launched ones (as well as Fido). The UK air launched torpedoes were the most successful ones in rates of actual and probable hits: 33.5% of the torpedoes launched. (the worst by percentage were battleship launched torpedoes: 12 for just 1 probable - the Bismarck)

My research says you are wrong. This is what one article says: “The 21 - inch Torpedo Mk VIII** was the standard torpedo used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War, and until recently, was still in limited service. It proved extremely reliable in all marine theatres of operations and formed the main armament of submarines and motor torpedo boats.”

Get a second O-Class Submarine of the Dutch Navy and have it work with O-19! And set up a choke point with O-19 in the approach from Singapore and the second O class submarine a bit further north! You might catch more supply ships that way!
