Westwood Studios were also the ones who made the very first Diablo-like game, all the way back in 2000: Nox. They really were trying to emulate Blizzard's success. Too bad they failed.
Manuel Díaz it’s clearly an American doing a quasi-British impression. It’s also awesome, child me was able to do this (clearly fabricated and extant only in Warcraft 2 cutscenes) accent due to natural childhood mimicry ability.

Probably my favorite WarCraft cutscene of all time. The ending of the cinematic just leaves you begging for more as those two forces get closer and closer to combat. I love how it doesn't even show you the beginning of the battle, just the two readying themselves for the conflict about to happen. And that music is just killer. Perfect for the mood. I really hope WarCraft will one day return to the RTS roots. I have no interest in WoW.
Brood War was an amazing expansion, but it held nothing to Warcraft 2, and the Tides of Darkness. Hell, long before Brood War abandon long before B.Net and even StarCraft there was an expansion for Tides of Darkness that originally released shortly after I bought Kali Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness. Known as Beyond the Dark Portal. Story Wise? Far superior to Diablo, it’s only contender at the time. I remember loving Kali and War1/2 (Didn’t care much for Diablo or it’s expansion Hellfire, but hellfire is the superior version. Blizzard just use to know how to make every game better. Oddly enough it was the same way they do it now….. Paid DLC. Expansions are literally all DLC crammed as a ‘new game’ when all it did was add hero’s, a new story element and some music. Much like they did starting with D3, then D3: w/e. All it did was add to the story and add some music and a character and cost three times as much as the old expansions did to make up for inflation. Hell, I remember being blown away they offered B.net free once StarCraft was released (I myself didn’t even touch SC until a month or so before Brood War, cuz I knew their angle. They made epic games, but best to wait at least a year to play it so you can get the full game experience. ) but where was I? Oh yeah, B.net blew me away. Especially when they rebranded all the games except SC as just a single disc with all expansions and with War2, all these free bonus maps to play on a free server. Anyone giving anything to play online for free was just unheard of!!! I remember a few years later Sega Channel dropped too, just like B.net but less features abs it cost more than a game every month. So B.net was where I truly learned the fun of multiplayer games. But ANYWAY!!! I don’t get the hate on Activison-Blizzard anymore. Sure the games don’t play as good, but they aren’t any more money hungry than they’ve ever been. They always operated with release buggy and charge to fix later, here’s a free thing to trick you into thinking we care with B.net.
Haha good memories from elementary school days. This game was basically my introduction to PC gaming and is thus probably the biggest reason I ended up in the IT industry.
I remember my cousin bringing this game when he came over to stay with us for a few days. I was around 9, and he was around 15. He then began playing it, with me watching. I remember complaining about the game being boring, with him still on the first missions and all. However, as the missions progressed and the battles became bigger and more interesting, I was in love with this game. After he left, he left me a copy of the game for my own leisure. You could not believe how excited I was.
probably my favorite all time game. this owned my childhood. i was so proud when i finally beat both campaigns without cheat codes! this game is actually pretty difficult for its time.
Wow, this takes me back. I remember the first time I saw this I thought the graphics were incredibly good. The dwarven cannons come out of the portholes at different speeds! Great vid.
Warcraft II epitomizes what Warcraft should be. A really simple, dark and brutal story while at the same time not taking itself seriously at all, with lots of charm and cartoony humor. And FAST fun gameplay with a high skill threshold.

At one time, it was one of the temporary Alliances I spoke of, and the mutual friendship between the two hasn't even begun to flood through to the rest of the Alliance, or the Horde. They still despise each other.

Anyone got the manual for wc2 as well? It's not just a manual but an art-book as well. Drawings from the employees of the game (including metzen himself), tech-trees and even 1/2 the book is full of story; it's a manual + art book + storybook + guide all in one. Pity my CD no longer works on windows 7. Also I always played the horde, they looked cooler and their campaign was harder, but more interesting :)
Unlikely since the movie tells a different storyline. In the first movie Stormwind/Azeroth essentially defeats the Horde while according to Warcraft lore they are utterly crushed.
Yeah, Gul'dan is still alive, and depending if we might have Airships instead, even if this is what made WoW alot different from RTS thanks to spaceships (also turned out that Draenor and Azeroth are planets, and "Demons" are in fact space aliens all along). I mean they still have Dranei in the movies, so there might be a chance of a spaceship landing and someone decided to make Airships out of it.
it's just amazing how peopleare keeping track of the flow from warcraft 2 to wow. I can' t believe people actually bother to come way back to warcraft 2 and post comment here. and it's 2010 and this was released back in 1995when I was 3rd grade. Damn I miss the old days.
I am a HUGE Warcraft fan and this game got me in to the series and definitely my favorite. I have played every warcraft out there and every one of them i enjoy VERY MUCH including WoW. The thing with WoW is its hard to get used to like me. When I first played i hated it because i wasnt used to that kind of game BUT I grew to like it. The blood elves are the only horde paladins and dranei are the only alliance shamans which makes sense. The lore is still fantastic.
I remember playing this in 1996 and it was EPIC. There was a new kid on the block also called "WESTWOOD Studios" and they produced a little game called "COMMAND & CONQUER" which I'd go onto love! I love that series, but I remember this hit from Blizzard taking a lot of notice. I love that narrator's voice. He's the Don Lafontaine of video game intros.
When I was a kid, I used to play Warcraft II with my friends. First we created a huge army full of all kinds of knights :D Then we put Ameno song by Era on and attacked and killed all the orcs and laughed a lot xD AMENOO!! Good childhood memories indeed.
I was raised on that game (and C&C, DN3D. Doom...). I know that to majority of nowadays gamers this animation might seem utterly archaic, but it's the wayit was back in my days. Wait, I'm still a gamer so my days aren't over... yet...

+Solaxe S I overreacted to it honestly my apologies, i like the current warcraft story if blizzard does one thing it's tell a great story, i just didn't think it was neccessary to go with "Demon blood made orcs evil" i thought the old tried and true tolkien orcs are evil was cool didn't need any explanation but warcraft orcs were evil but had depth to it mired in a culture founded on honour and glory and revering their ancestors, i like the idea of demons but i preferred it when they were beings of a somewhat biblical hell, obviously i was young and my interpretation was different, i think manipulation from Gul'dan would have sufficed, and demons could have been a whole new threat unconnected to orcs and they could begrudginly join with the humans, I just take issue with retcons is all :P i shouldn't trash blizzard, just nostalgia makes me a bit testy is all, and yes thaddius still creeps me the fuck out in naxx, but the current game seems more creepy than gorey, normally i'd be a cockhead to you over it but i realised if they kept to the only orcs vs humans the game would have ended after warcraft 2, Hope that gives you a more in depth understanding of my minor frustration, i can be a real arse :P
I just felt like I had to chime in and remind you that the "old tried and true Tolkein orcs are evil" is pretty much the same thing as what you seem to be criticizing. Tolkein's orcs are elves that have been corrupted by Morgoth. They're not just purely evil by default.
Agreed! it does a fantastic job conveying a real sense of epic foreboding, and dated though the graphics are, I feel they hold up fairlly well. The music also, is totally unforgettable. Still one of my favorites
The Warcraft Movie shouldve done a prologue scene summing up Warcraft 1/2 with scenes like this in modern CGI glory, then jumped straight into Warcraft 3's amazing storyline. It would've been a hit, and there's easily enough between the base game and expansion for 3 movies.
This game had such a sweet instruction manual, as well as a sweet everything else. I MUST FIND IT. It will make for epic toilet reading. This is why being a tween in the late 90s ruled. haha
I miss the old horde because they had fighting spirit. They lived as they wanted to, even while in the legion´s grasp, that they tried to break free. Ner´zhul,Guldan,Cho´gall,Grom,Deathwing,they never wanted to stay as tools for the legion and Ner´zhul breaked free when he was transformed into the lich king by kiljaeden. In wow the players there are a bunch of frightned sheeps in a faction that lost the will to fight and indeed doesnt even have reasons to fight anymore,except against the legion.
Well, in WC3 we are told that: the orcish leaders where really just trying to safe the orcs instead of powerhungry dicators, the guardians turned out to be mere MIB types, Mediv's story got replaced by copy pasting diablo's story on to of it, etc. etc. Sure, the war still happened but they made so many changes to the characters and their motivations and history of the orcs that the WC2 manual isn't even canon anymore.
So for all the people who do not know what Lordaeron is, it was the former Human Capital as well as a nation. Lordaeron in WoW now is the city of ruins on top of the Undercity actually...
At that time they still liked the game. WC3 was a step back for its generation as Starcraft set the standard for RTS. WC3 overcentralized gameplay with the use of Heroes.
In fact the movie (which is called "Warcraft" and not "World of Warcraft") is coming out in 2009. The producers are said to be the same as 300, and they already said it is NOT going to be "another videogame movie" thank god to that ;)
I love this intro. 0:23 makes me thrill. It just like that scene from Troy with hyndreds of ships in Armada. Of course perhaps this scene from intro of W2 inspired director of troy. eh?
The trolls are so cool in this game, more muscles, they are green, they have throwing axes, it is that trolls who is ''Forest Trolls'' in Warcraft 3, I remember this game, it's one of the best games ever, it's epic... =)
