I remember hearing an animation historian say " when you see Ward Kimball's animation on the screen you know it's Ward Kimball." And after watching this my eye is more attuned to that statement and you recognise his actual style and the way he puts things together is very distinct.

That's actually true of every animator. Not taking anything away from his greatness, but one could say that about all the Nine Old Men.

I think what I'm really getting from Kimball's work is that he isn't afraid to make cartoons be cartoons. Make some noodles arms, stretch that mouth wide, have the characters twist and bend in ways that we can't and just have fun making something impossible, possible!

I say out of most Disney animators, Ward was probably the cartooniest animator, he wasn’t really like the others and trying to make things look more realistic. His stuff is more wacky and animated than stuff the others were doing like Milt Kahl, Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas and Marc Davis. I’d say Fred Moore, Bill Tytla and sometimes Art Babbitt would still have their cartoony sides show in a lot of stuff

It had a Eric Goldberg-animated version of Kimball as a Mickey Mouse ear-wearing samurai killing Woody Woodpecker, SpongeBob SquarePants, Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Tom and Jerry, Felix The Cat, Superman ( famous/flesicher version ), Fauntleroy Fox and Crawford Crow, Mr. Magoo, Bullwinkle The Moose, Casper The Ghost, Pingu, Yogi Bear, Fred Flintstone, Scooby-Doo, Pink Panther, Betty Boop, Little Lulu, Cuphead, Bendy, Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Dick Tracy ( UPA version ), Crusader Rabbit, Flip The Frog and Li'l Abner. He was killing them all like a toon-hating mad man. Then, Mickey Mouse ( along with Donald Duck, Goofy and Winnie The Pooh ) came along and give Kimball a thumbs up. Kimball laughs maniacally. Is That A Strange and Mean-spirited Dream or What ?

You can tell from the way he animates, it's all about having fun. Even when characters are looking angry like Lucifer in Cinderella, or scared like Ichabod in Ichabod & Mr. Toad, the expressions are played for the sake of humor. Even as a person, you know he's the kind of person that just wants to have as much fun as possible.

The most Ward Kimballish animation in "Pinocchio" is where Jiminy gets angry in the pool hall and storms off.

I love them all but Ward Kimball is my favorite of the Nine Old Men. I could watch his zany creatures every day, good old Lucifer the cat!

Kimball also designed and animated Casey Jr in "Dumbo." And just about every other train scene Disney did.

Kimball may have designed Casey Junior, but it doesn't look like he actually animated the train in "Dumbo," at least according to the draft.

The chairman of the Hollywood Animator's union, who worked with Ward, once said, "He was one of the only people at the studio who could animate Ludwig VonDrake playing 3 or 4 musical instruments at once and NOT have it look ridiculous."

Little story time: When working on Snow White, (he did the "let me see your hands" scene) Ward was in charge of doing a soup sequence that obviously never made it into the film. You can find it on RU-vid here with audio. It took him 8 months to do that entire scene by himself. There was a problem, though. Walt called Ward into his office one day and said that he was sorry, he knew Ward worked so hard on it, but the soup scene was not going to be put into the picture. This was a disappointment for Ward for a split second until he was told that Walt was putting him on as animation director and supervisor for Pinocchio. Ward was very pleased by this news.

All the Disney animators got to work with Mickey and Donald ☺️. If you work at Disney, you get to work with pretty much all the characters, like every single character to come out of the world of Disney

Yeah he basically was. That’s a great way of looking at it. Both Ward and Rod were the wackiest animators at Disney and Warner Bros respectively. Same thing for Irv Spence at MGM for his wacky Tom and Jerry animation

Yes he was his lead animator, only a few scenes he did of him actually look like his work, when he bumps into the door on the clock while following the mechanical milkmaid, when he says “be cheerful like me” while crying, and when he gets mad at Lampwick.

it was redrawn from a ward kimball scene meant for "the reluctant dragon." it *is* kimball's mickey, just with a different outfit

I wonder how Ward Kimball’s animation would have developed had he went to Warner’s or MGM instead of Disney considering how Disney generally would have toned down the type of stylized, zany animation that say Irv Spence and Art Davis excelled at (compare Emery Hawkins’ work at Disney and Warners).

Ward Kimball Should've Also Worked at: - Warner Bros. - MGM ( Alongside Tex Avery ) - Hanna-Barbera - Jay Ward Productions - Fleischer Studios ( where he would make the fleischer cartoons more funny ) - UPA - Walter Lantz - Terrytoons - Van Beuren ( where he adds lots of slapstick in the rubberhose-like cartoons ) - Columbia Pictures ( where he would make give the fox and the crow tex avery-like slapstick ) - Famous Studios and DePatie-Freleng.

i can't claim 100% accuracy on any reel, but this one goes almost* completely by the studio animator drafts which is about as good as you can get for golden age cartoons. you can check them for yourself on hans perk's blog if you'd like; the link is in the description. *(the "mickey's birthday party" draft credits the shots to ken muse and riley thomson, but they only changed mickey's outfit--the actual animation is kimball's.) www.whataboutthad.com/2012/09/
