One thing I learned, be careful of being influenced by people whose body type is completely different from your own, and whose color palette is completely different from your own.

Definitely! I have that with button-downs, which are always mentioned as a staple and I understand why, but no ‘traditional’ button-down has ever looked good on me.

Just getting into the video, but -- jumpsuits. No can do. Why would I wear something I have to completely take off in the bathroom? At work, in a public bathroom? Eek.

Plus jumpsuits are hard to fit. They inherit all of the measurements needed to get a well fitting pant plus your top half had to be "proportionate" to your bottom half. I know some people really love them but I'm not really a fan.

On my don’t buy list: neutrals, flat/thin shoes, denim, button-front shirts, and synthetic fabrics. I live in bright colors, funky patterns, chunky shoes, and statement jewelry. One day, as an experiment, I wore all solid neutral colors to work, and every person I saw asked me if I was feeling okay. So yeah, I’d agree that the lists are very individual.

Hi Christina. DEFINITELY do a part 2! This topic made me really think! While my list does overlap with yours, chunky shoes, majority synthetic fabs, florals and geometric, I will never give up my stripes, lol. What I did realize were two things I’m drawn to “ imaginary self” but never wear due to my “ retired” lifestyle. I will no longer buy silk blouses, too hot where I live and too dressy for everyday life now ( will keep most of what I have) and “ dressy” dresses! Casual cotton dresses yes, but no place other than church to wear the others! AND I am so guilty of buying for vacation! NO MORE! Thank you for giving me something to really think about and undoubtedly saving me money!!!!

@@lilithowlI mean, you could ask that about literally anything. I think a lot of us find it fun to make excuses to buy new clothes that we think we will wear more than just once. Then we wear it once, and we keep attempting to wear it more often but can't find a reason. It's generally not our everyday style (even if we want it to be). So it hangs out with the vacation clothes in hopes that we will wear it on a different vacation but then we use the next vacation as an excuse to buy something we won't wear often again 😂😂😂 Vicious cycle. I’ve redyed my black and navy natural fibres. I was nervous to start with, but I had (and still have) a pair of navy trousers that fit so well I really wanted to keep wearing them. Black and navy are the easiest to dye as the colour matching is straightforward, but I absolutely get your point. Faded equals scruffy.

I love going backwards from what you DON'T want. I wish the shopping sites would let us do that. I don't wear black. So when I shop online it would be so much easier if I could filter out black and the other colors I don't wear, and then see what's left. As a long-time dog and cat mom (and former horse mom) white pants have been a NO for decades, as have light colored bottoms of any kind. I also don't wear much for prints, and no big slouchy clothes - I am petite and they just don't fit my words or style vibe, although I love how they look on others. It makes shopping so much easier to know what your "no's" are.

I'm so happy you mentioned Oxford shirts as a "no place" item. Yes, many love them and for good reason, but any button-down shirt looks terrible on me. Then I discovered that I have scoliosis (curvature of the lower spine). While it is not really noticeable, it does make a button-down shirt twist during the day. So, no more of those. Also, I'm not comfortable in jeans. It's so nice to watch fashion vloggers and say, "nope not for me."

My “do not buy” list: anything that isn’t flamboyant gamine. : D Frills, draping, thin/weightless fabrics, pastels, anything juvenile-leaning like hair accessories, slouchy handbags, maxi skirts/dresses, feminine dresses, dainty shoes, dainty jewelry, soft prints like polka dots or watercolour, oversized/wide leg jeans, anything boho-looking, etc. : D It certainly eliminates most clothes, but I find that perfectly tailored boyish blazer or cigarette pant or straight cut shirt it’s just *chef’s kiss.*

I’m not exclusively buying clothes in those lines, but I’m trying to have them in mind when shopping 😁 It’s really hard tho to differentiate between things not working for your body and things you just don’t like the style of, even if they may technically work for your body 🫠
@KurlyKy
@KurlyKy 4 месяца назад
Right? It’s a balance, I find. : ) I try and take the foundations of my typing (ie. the lines, the fabric weights, my colour season) as relatively concrete, and then everything else is how I interpret it. Or taking something I love but then understanding why it’s “wrong” and knowing the “rules” that help me counterbalance to bring harmony. There is nothing a body type “cannot” wear, but not everything looks good on everyone. I don’t know a single person in existence who looks their best in everything. Haha. : ) But it’s a case of knowing what inherently balances best, versus knowing what isn’t our best but finding ways to make them work. : )

However, I haven't known my style type and thought maybe I was classic but don't fit perfectly in that category. I'm 60, and in the early 80s as a young adult, the whole "Season Colour" was a big thing (I'm a winter "but"...). It took me a few years of figuring it out, it confused me because I do NOT have skin that is pink NOR yellow undertone; I can wear both "winter" and "fall" (if I wear strategic makeup), but just recently (!) I think i might be an Olive tone!!! Very pale Olive tone, but it makes sense since I'm of German decent, and most of my friends from Germany, Greece, Italy, we all seem to have that different "cast" to our skin. Your description of yourself rang true with me - any beige or camel looks gawd-awful on me, i can't wear any nude or light lipsticks; pinks are the best for makeup on me, any "warm" colours - bleh. As my face is evolving 😆 I am redefining my style for this next chapter, and am leaning heavily on black and white combos (my hair is coming in white), and intense colours for summer like red, strong turquoise, strong corals. My makeup is evolving into a more simple but more defined, and my fashion is more structured. Makes me feel powerful. I love playing with all this, and am loving your vids as well as Alyssa's and many other ladies on YT, they are KILLIN' it! 😁Much thanks.

I’m a flower print person, and a warm tone person but I have a lot of overlap with you besides that. 1) Went through a Breton stripe phase too before I realized they just look wrong on me. So many people swear they look great on everyone but it’s not true. 2) bows and ruffles 3) big shoulder pad jackets because I have broad shoulders already and don’t need to look like a footballer. 3) jeans or jean skirts that don’t feel soft enough on my waist. Even if they look amazing I won’t wear them if they aren’t comfortable. This has been a hard one to reconcile. 4) Really bright colors. I look & feel better in muted deep tones, though I love bright colors on others and in general. 5) uncomfortable anything- including undergarments! So no more underwire bras. 6) Beige. Stone is ok, but beige… I have a beige linen bomber jacket from Zadig and Voltaire. I bought it in Paris when I was sad. I still love the construction but must let it go. 7) like my rule with drinking; no shopping when I’m sad. It doesn’t work! And worse than a hangover are the garments that remind me of the sadness. That isn’t an item but it’s probably my most important rule. I guess I can thank my beige jacket for finally teaching me that lesson.
@Wanda-v4b
@Wanda-v4b 4 месяца назад
You could try dying the beige bomber. If it’s going out anyway it won’t matter if you mess it up shrug. Since the stitching is polyester I would do a dye that can handle synthetic like Rit’s dyemore line. Also since linen can shrink I wouldn’t do it at the recommended almost boiling temperatures. It would probably just make it a bit lighter. I just dyed a hill house home dress that had yellow under the arms and I like it even better now.

Great video! I have eliminated nearly all the black in my wardrobe. I can’t wear black or gray - or blues/greens that have gray in them, or pinks with cool undertones or dark navy near my face. I am very fair with yellow undertones. I am a light spring. It’s helped me so much with shopping and clothes to have my colors done

I am a retired teacher and 67 years young. I don't want to look frumpy therefore I have refreshed my wardrobe style with classic and tailored clothing along with some casual pieces that I wear when I am with my grandsons. I no longer buy synthetic clothing except if it is minimally included in the fabric content and I absolutely love the piece. Living in the warm/hot climate of Scottsdale, Arizona, I tend to buy light colors, so I no longer buy black tops and bottoms. I no longer buy midrise pants. As a petite gal, I prefer the high-rise fit. I gave up wearing heels when I turned 50. This video has been so helpful. I have items in my closet that I probably should declutter because I don't often wear them. I would love to see part 2.

I love colors and I stopped trying to buy only beige and black . I still really love white though. Blazers are just not for me, I got rid of all of them, they are super uncomfortable so cashmere cardigans it is for me! I don’t buy heels anymore, but I still keep some since sometimes they are needed. I only buy natural fabrics and nothing tight, love me a classy look.

I am very limited in what I'll realistically wear. I'm with you on the (mostly) natural fabrics. I only wear black socks. I only wear full length pants (none of which are leggings) so no shorts, capris, skirts, or dresses... I just feel like I look silly in them. I don't wear white after Labour Day or any day. I don't wear accessories like hats, scarves, belts, and jewellery. I wouldn't even have a purse if my daughter hadn't bought me one as a gift! She chose well though because she knows I'm a minimalist and just got me a wallet on a string.

I don’t buy skirts anymore. Which is strange because I love dresses, especially in the summer. But skirts often ride up if they’re short, get turned around if they’re too big, and require more styling than dresses. The other bigs nos for me are heels, tight jeans, and belts. I hate wearing belts. Basically, anything uncomfortable is out.

I feel this re: skirts. I own a few but find myself turning to dresses far more often! For me dresses tend to flatter my figure better also with wide hips and a bit of a tummy I can look nicely hourglass in most dresses but a skirt and top is trickier without looking choppy and unflattering.

Plus size - it's a struggle but I don't buy cold shoulder tops, "Paris" prints, floaty tent dresses with tiered skirts, and massive floral prints. I would like to avoid synthetic fabrics but it is very hard to avoid in plus size. I also don't buy blazers as I've learned that I find them restrictive and so never wear them.

as mid-size and former plus-size I feel this too, everything you named but especially blazers. I do have a short sleeve olive one in a softer fabric that is surprisingly cute with a tank dress for the office but full blazers are too bulky and restrictive.

Yes...Would love a part two!...Totally agree. I will buy something because "surely I need to break out of my neutral cycle" but truth is, I love my neutrals and when I try to buy for "fantasy self" or purchase an item that's trending, it ends up never getting the love it deserves and I wind up donating it....I also get suckered into great deals. Just because something is real leather or something is on sale or something might be worth a lot per resale comps, does not mean I need to spend money on it. Cycles and habits are hard to break so thank you for posting videos that helps us all to realize A - we're not the only ones and B - you can start a new and healthier chapter....

Yes, I would love a part 2! The one item I'm constantly seeing (on YT, not IRL) is the button-up vest. Although some are very tempting, as a woman in her 60's, I have to remind myself that, despite my upper-body workouts, I no longer have the arms I want to show off in anything sleeveless. Also, I don't care for the look of them layered over something else, like a tee shirt. So, I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never buy one, even though I love how they look on younger women!

What I do not do at all is anything black, white, the classic T-shirt that people insist on being essential, blazers, or trousers that cross from the "relaxed" into the wide-leg or oversized territory. Thanks for the helpful food-for-thought video, would love to see a part 2!

Loved the Disney reference at the end - Aladdin was definitely in my top 3 Disney movies as a kid 🧞‍♂️ The timing on this was great, as I've been curating my own 'do not buy' list. I have 8 or 9 things on there - no 3/4 sleeve tops, patterned pants are a no-go (yet I love patterned skirts and dresses), and flowy tops (think peasant blouses, anything with that ethereal or boho vibe).

Oh I have a problem with Breton stripes LOL I LOVE them. I have to stop myself regularly from buying it. Also chunky loafers are my big love. They complement my vibe so well and receive compliments regularly on how I wear them. I am in agreement with everything else though. Natural fibers, cool colors and everything very minimal. I had a big gray with black moment during last Winter and felt super "me". Pastels are the devil LOL I have stopped shopping on vacation entirely. I find that the place I am at used to influence what I buy (beach town for example) and that is not something that works in real life once I am back.

Hello from Ukraine! Buying stop-list is a thing. I discovered so many cases when I was decluttering, just little things like the wrong collar shape, color tone, materials, etc. Item can be absolutely nice, but THIS ONE thing ruining all and it just hanging in wardrobe forever never worn. 😬 So now i know at least - no light colors, no warm tones, no tight collars, no for synthetic, no jeans (hard fabrics on the skin ugh), no for knee-lenght skirts! At the end of 2023 I made a list of things I didn't want to buy in general in 2024 because I already had too many of them. The only wardrobe item on that list was boots. And it's made me realize that while I love the look of boots, I generally don't wear them! Living in the north east US, I do need to have a couple of pair, but for me otherwise, it's kind of a waste of money. I also limit myself on the number of black items I have since I have pets and I hate picking hair off them and it really isn't great on me either. I also don't own a lot of dresses and skirts (2 of each) because I only need them for certain situations. I agree with you 100% on synthetics. And I hear you on the Oxford button downs. I finally donated all of what I had except for my denim style one because it kind of works for a jacket in a pinch too. I've never understood buying new clothes for vacation, I just want to be me and comfortable. Great video! (and sorry for the novel LOL)

Let’s hear part 2! Would taupe trousers work for you? I can more easily identify styles that don’t work for me vs individual items. For me, I can’t pull off: preppy, twee, retro, baggy/androgynous, polka dots, tons of accessories, anything meant for a lean, athletic body type, anything cutesy or super trendy, pastels Dislikes: cap sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, capris, graphic tees that reflect the time period eg moustaches, foxes, owls, keep calm and carry on, rompers, jumpsuits, most cropped tees Things that never worked out for me: denim jackets 😢, most shorts (I just reach for skirts when it’s warm enough), cream coloured items (wash me out)

Super interesting for me to watch, especially since as you touched on in the beginning, I have a very different personal style than you! So it was a fun exercise for me to think about what my list would be. Honestly, blazers are probably the first thing I can think of 😂 I’m petite and slim with curves, so anything oversized or boxy just drowns me and I don’t feel confident in it at all. I have been paying more attention to fabric quality and composition as well too though - I got burned buying what should have been a beautiful and flattering dress online, but since it was basically 100% polyester it was horrendous. It was a real aha moment for me - like wow, this dress could have been great if it were mostly cotton or linen….

Ok I thought of some more things after reading through the comments! I don’t buy crew neck tops (unflattering on me), chunky shoes same as you, I just don’t like them, or any heels - I only wear flat shoes. I’m short and I like to be short lol - I don’t feel like myself in heels, so I wear them maybe once a year for a special occasion, but never as part of my regular wardrobe. I also don’t buy destroyed denim (not my style).

My beef with classic capsule wardrobes is that they often include items that not only do I never wear, but I also very rarely see anyone around me wearing. So they don't feel as classic/timeless as they were intended to. For example, trench coats and biker jackets are in the vast majority of these capsules people make, but I own both and never wear them, and I never see anyone else wearing them. Basic wardrobe staples are supposed to be basic obviously but also help you get dressed easily and look situation appropriate. But if no one wears biker jackets around then it's really more of a personal choice and less of a "staple". Too many people get caught up in buying every piece of capsules they see online without thinking about whether or not they'd actually wear that thing or feel comfortable in it.

First off - omg I adore you. I have to go watch the videos of how to understand my tone. I totally can't even figure out what foundation matches me, nevermind what colors look best on me.😂 I can't tell the difference between warm and cool colors in general or notice a difference in me when I wear them. 😅 The 3 style words really helped me a lot. I'm still struggling with getting rid of clothes, though lol. Like I bought 2 blazers a couple years ago to be my fantasy self, and I still hate but can't get rid of them 🙄. Love your comments about color. I had my colors done in the '80s when it was "spring, summer, autumn, winter" and from the first time I started watching your videos, I could have told you that silver was your jam, but not gold. I've identified as an autumn for a long time. It's only been recently, since I started going gray, that I've been able to make the navy and black and white work for me. Do our colors change as we age? Will you be able one day to wear a pink tee, if you allow your hair to go gray (if you actually do)?

I loved this video! I think knowing what you DON'T want is a good way to guide you to your "hell yes" purchases/style. It's always good to take stock of your values and the mistakes you've done in the past to see what you shouldn't add to your wardrobe. For me, I've realized (a littler later than I would have liked) that I loved-to-buy-but-hated-to-wear frilly/feminine blouses in delicate materials and with bows that you could be tied at the neck, or bell-shaped sleeves. I discovered that I much prefer a stiff button-up that I can dress up or down and that doesn't make me look overly feminine (because that's a look I'm staying clear of). Another thing that I think doesn't belong in my wadrobe anymore is new fast fashion. I'm ok with a second hand Zara coat, but I won't be getting any new ones from the store. And another thing that has no place for me is any type of uncomfortable shoe. But unfortunately sometimes even the most comgy-looking shoes can give you blisters, so it's a hit and miss, especially if you buy online, but even when you try on the shoe in store sometimes you can't tell (which honestly is kinda giving me an existential crisis).

When I initially got out of my shopaholic phase and started listing some of my stuff on Depop and asking friends/family if they wanted some of my clothes I really realised that even the simplest pieces of clothing are very personal choices. A great example would be a black ribbed top, I like high collars, short sleeves, long enough to tuck, thick fabric. My mum like sleeveless, boat neck or round and thin fabric.
