Wardrobe surgery: upcycled clothing in London's Hackney

When they were teenagers in the late nineties, Kerry Seager and Annika Sanders wanted clothes that would make them look unique, but they didn't have any money so they started remaking old clothes into new styles.
Today, their Junky Stylings line has been labeled "high fashion street couture" by Vogue and has been worn by celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Kate Moss, Sadie Frost, and Sienna Miller.
Partly responsible for bringing attention to the current movement for upcyling, or refashioning, clothing, Seager and Sanders also perform wardrobe surgery for clients who bring in old clothing they want to make new again. They upcycled one of Colin Firth's moth-eaten suits for his wife Livia to wear at the "King's Speech" premiere in Paris.
Wanting to help others re-make old clothes new again, Sanders and Seager are eager to give away their secrets. In their book Junky Styling: Wardrobe Surgery, they not only document their personal journey, but they offer a how-to section full of details so readers can make some of their trademark designs, like a suit-sleeve scarf or a "shirt wrap halter top".
In a very open-source spirit, they have published patterns in The Guardian. With the step-by-step instructions for their popular "fly top", they show you in six steps- with just trousers, T-shirt, scissors, pins and needle and thread- how to "turn any pair of trousers into a fitted top with a wide structured neckline and a zip detail".
We visited their shop in London's Hackney district to see an operation in process.

They're lucky because in NY, people had access to good, old clothes & fabrics & army surplus in the 70s & 80s. Now, the 2nd hand market is a wasteland because average consumers haven't demanded good fabrics & tailoring in decades. Thrift stores in the US are storehouses of old t-shirts, track suits and man made textiles.

That is a real tragedy. You will never see fabrics like vintage fabrics. I have 1 wool Suit from the 60s you simple cant compare them with todays suits even if wool.

Wow, I've seen upcycled videos and loved them but this is on a completely another level. I love the core idea of this and how people could completely rework things to their own style in order to reuse them. :D

I used to do this as a young broke teen. I would raid my parents closets and see what I could rework. I had lots of fun, making weird things. It eventually lead to fashion design, in high school. Thank you Mrs Ashmoore for showing me how to take proper measurements, and having the patients for my lack of vocabulary in describing what I wanted to achieve. High school was tolerable because of her and my beauty culture and Art teachers.

Where I live (Uruguay), there is a brand called In-Use, and they have a similar approach to this. It is really good to see that is something that replicates in different parts. Also, where I study design, I do product but the ones that do fashion and textile design do a work where they have to chose a jacket and transform it without using anything else but the piece they started with. This is really interesting!

Good point. It's hard to tell whether the original materials/suits were quality materials or not. If so, they are likely worth using as suits and finding appropriate customers. If not, they are not worth using as a fabric resource apart from low-budget experiment. This shop likely ads value to low-end material by adding one-off, "custom design", elements.

This is fun. I did this through the late 60's and early 70s because "I got one new outfit to start school and then "I'd have to figure it out what I could do with babysitting money! My Dad's old paisley shirts became belted cossack shirts and cocktail dresses became dirndl skirts with matching fringed belts, etc.

Uprated! This reminds me a bit of what Dianne Brill was doing, I think in the late '70s. She couldn't get a residency permit to stay in the UK and to carry on with the work she'd already been doing there I think, so she bought up a bunch of "old clothes," took them to the States from London, and reworked them. They appeared on MIAMI VICE and stuff. It's in her book, BOOBS, BOYS & HIGH HEELS. This clip is very creative and saves old stuff from landfill and all! Great.

i, too applaud the recycling idea but some of them, IMHO, are not as successful as others. That beige/brown woman's top with the two buttons by the belly... that was great. Simple, elegant. it's when it gets too busy with too many different clothes, then I'm not feeling it.
@TheDenisedrake

Just learn basic sewing-- especially darts and then just go for it. They are just showing the beautiful things. I'm sure they would be the first to tell you they've ruined a bunch of clothing.

I love this video. I've been doing quite the same for many years now. Transforming leather coats into bags and purses. Keeping the good parts and the interesting details of the original piece and making the best of it. However I have to say that this is extremely time consuming and I dont think anybody can do this as a real business. I dont know for you guys but in my area people dont want to pay for all that work. Too bad.

Thanks for sharing! Things may change, though. Retrofitting has always had its niche, but there are ways to bring it beyond that. Let's see what happens in the coming years, we're keeping an eye on the topic.
