This mans property & privacy rights are being trampled. That much is obvious. But what equally concerns me, is that fact that there are fire officials who don't know what substances are/aren't flammable. That little piece of incompetence alone, is grounds for enough for their dismissal. "Vinyl records are flammable". Yea OK. Hasn't anybody called them on that blatant lie? Some of you are missing the real point here. A guy buys an old brick building and fills it with his stuff. He doesn't fill it with explosives. If it burns up, so what? He loses his records.. that his loss. There is a fire station right across the street, literally. We pay firemen to put out fires. I'm sure there is some city council person who hates the sight of this old building and wants it torn down.

I'm just pointing out that this isn't some poor guy's lovingly built collection, it's just a huge inventory of records that few people want. If you look at his sales list on his website, you'll find tons of records that are normally relegated to the dollar bins, but he wants $40-50 a piece for them. It's no wonder he's been sitting on them for over 30 years. If he set his prices to a more realistic level, most of them would sell and he could retire with a few million dollars in the bank.

Anyone know an update on all the vinyl and this story? I see this video was posted back in 2011... What happened to all that vinyl? This might be the mother load that all the vinyl collectors DJs addicts etc... have been dreaming to find. The holy grail just sitting in front of their faces! We all need to get together and have all that vinyl moving like money currency again... Don't let them just sit there! I can tell by the looks of it there's some VERY RARE VINYL UP IN THERE. as a vinyl lover since 5 years old my heart goes out to the owner of all those LP's.what the "man" is doing to him is purely un-American.with this reasoning i suppose they think the library of congress is nothing but a giant fire hazard as well? it takes a good deal of effort to set an LP ablaze,bricks too.......please contact me sir if you decide to sell your records.my condolences.
Just across the street from the fire station, Just put a damn Smokedetector, wire it to a relay that turns a neon sign and a bell on and off. "the sign saying" SOMETHING IS ON FIRE IN HERE!

Has anything happened with this man's collection since the airing of this story? Collections like this are too big for any regular person to maintain... He should donate all of his collection to the Library of Congress or the Smithsonian. At least there they know how to deal with unusual collections containing priceless archives.
If you do a little research, you'll find that he has multiple copies all of just the 2861 titles that you see on the shelves in the house. For some titles he has hundreds of copies. Most of it is from the 1970s, including a lot of soul/funk and latin.

I would say at this point he doesnt really do anything with the records so maybe he should seek out collectors and sell or donate them. As far as the courts and local authorities go, they should leave him alone.

Getting Poly Vinyl Chloride to burn requires dedication to the task. It's not particularly flammable, and the way records are packed means almost no circulating air. You're more likely to get a dust explosion caused by a static discharge in a building that size. Check the index of flammability, anyone? Best recipe? mix it with an acetyl co polymer in an injection molding machine, and stand back.Well back. Yet another case of' Bored civic officials having too much time on their hands.

Ecactly! All potentially dangerous fluids evaporate during manufacture of the raw material. Otherwise record companys around the world would have faced the most sincere fire prevention regulaions ages ago. But - surprise, surprise - they haven't.
This would make a great documentary, just someone digging through the records in the warehouse. I'd watch it, just as I watched so many episodes of Hoarders. I loved that show. So a guy hoards a million records or so. Sounds like an American to me.
@WMalven Yeah, the guy is obviously a hoarder, but as long as people keep their mental illness or eccentricities confined to their own property and they are not harming anyone, nobody, especially not the government, has the right to mess with it. But I guess we are agreed on that part.... There's flammable shit on most properties.
This is just some crazy way around iminate (sp) domain. I bet this was not a "problem" until some developer came along. On the flip side, It is a shame to leave that many records, stacked the way they were, in non climate controled warehouse. Regardless though, THEY ARE HIS!!! Leave the guy alone. I didn't see any buildings near his to really worry about.
i can't beleive this i have a lot of records also, i colected from working at a radio station and still collect i will not get rid of mine, people give them to me all the time because i take care and still play on air when i can.
They made it sound like vinyl records burn easier after they are 45 years old. That is bullshit. In contrast acetate records burn very easy (the home made kind popular in the 1940's)...but these are vinyl.

In the attic of the old library in the Indiana University historic crescent, there was a very tall stack of radio station vinyl records (those wide ones) labeled School of Sky. I saw this in the mid 80s. They're probably still there. I think school of sky may have been a jazz program, not sure.
