Chaos gate daemonhunters is an unbelievably satisfying turn based strategy rpg, with a rich amount of customisation. A big part of that are the characters you can create and wield on the battlefield against the demons of the plague god. If you want to know more about the types of grey knights, the incorruptible ultra-elite demon fighting bad-asses you can outfit to purge your enemies from the battlefield, you’re in the right place. The 4 you start with are the justicar, the interceptor, the purgator, and the apothecary. Later on you’ll have access to the paladin, the chaplain, the librarian, and the purifier.

Your videos on Chaos Gate are so refreshing. Actual analysis and in depth tips rather than mostly observations that the game literally spells out for you in the first three missions. As much as the Paladin is a bit lackluster I still like it as it's the most 'knighty' out of the Grey Knights. Keep up the fine work!

That's what I was trying to avoid doing. Thank you. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Paladn, which was why it is hard to rate it so low. But he does need help. You can build around the class and it works quite well.

@@Dantics hasn't the recent stun nerf made his stun ability better? I have had a very hard time executing anyone lately, as they typically die before I can stun them.

Hell yes, especially since Nurgle is over used and to a lesser degree Khorne. Slaanesh and Tzeentch are never used, Double goes for Slaanesh. It would be a nice change. Nurgle troops: hordes of diseased victoms, tanky higher tie troops and a few sorcerers Khorne: Berserker warriors, alot of melee with a few ranged. Tzeentch: alot of magic, summoning daemons but weak in melee. Slaanesh: masters at what they do and with charming/paralysing abilities.

i loved Warhammer when i was a young lad (50yrs old now) i bought Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters and love it but do need some help with some knowledge on justicars interceptors apothecarys etc etc so this video is a great help for oldies like myself who need a little help with remembering warhammer troops i played with 30yrs ago as a tabletop game. VERY good video guide Dantics.

Some additional mentions for the Apothecary and his uses, he can be an amazing enabler for your Interceptor to go on a Stun/Execute Spree, the Iron Arm Biomancy does so much for a Hammer-Interceptor allowing him to potentially finish an entire Pod of CSM and come out with 3-4 AP left. Also his Biomancy abilities are not limited at all by the Apothecary Skull, quite the contrary, it actually makes him a lot better as it reduces the WP cost of the Biomancies down to 1 WP rather than 2-3. Still thoroughly believe the Apothecary isn't amazing but he's quite a bit better, in my opinion, than outlined here.

I know I'm 7 months late to the party, but I also want to add: If you manage to chain your fights - set up your group close to the enemy, engage the enemy (regain AP), destroy enemy in one turn (regain AP), move to the next pod and initiate (regain AP) etc - the usefulness of biomancies increases a lot, since their cooldowns won't tick down. Even more so since Warp Speed/Iron Arm also *helps* with keeping the chain going with additional movement speed and Execution AP. I've had my whole team on Warp Speed + my Interceptor on Iron Arm for a whole mission once, never had to re-cast a single buff. Though I'm not playing on high difficulty and I think I'm not in the late game yet.

This is the best Chaosgate video I've seen so far - I've seen other youtubers who played so little before their guide that they didn't even know about the additional classes! The justicar skill that grants AP has been pretty clutch, to the point that early game I think it's worth bringing two instead of an Apothecary!

@@Dantics My interceptor has tier 2 falchions that give armor pierce on a force strike which has made him unbelievably broken. I'm beating reapers in a single turn, it's nuts.

Great video, I agree with pretty much this assessment. Here's my quick take. Early game run 2 interceptors and then later on run a Librarian with anything. 2 blinky boys will carry the early game and then mass teleport will completely carry from then on

Great video! I agree with most of it, but the Justicar is insanely good at providing support, and without him, the Interceptor is just not the same, so I think he deserves a better spot. It is telling that his other abilities are good (especially stun charge and provoke), but don't get used much because of honor the chapter. I think the support skills are usually more important than the main skills, in that I found Justicar + Interceptor much better than Interceptor + anything else.

The librarian may be an A as long as there is access to the teleport stratagem as than his best ability is freely available ... but he turns to S in the fights without. Porting the melee team up to key positions and throw out an empowered shriek AND his damage spell to prepare the slaughter is powerful as hell. Being able to do this two or three times with the right gear got me a long way to win the real hard battles.

actually my preferred class is the purifier, but as the melee-build, it's a gigashredding melee class with very high damage, though it needs an armor that gives +movement or +AP especially with the stoic blade (100% parry, twice per turn) you get a very durable melee-resistand melee specialist that prefers to fight demons with mutations that move towards him

Thanks A D. I certainly do after 3 playthroughs. I hope you enjoy. It entirely depends on you and your playstyle. If you like lots of troops get the barracks and faster exp gain. If you like less get faster wound recovery. The difficulty you're on determines how important some things are like the prognosticars. You also might never need to blow up a planet ;)

Good video! Worth pointing out that Apothecarians have an ability (Apothecarian Skull) that allows them to use their Biomancy buffs at ANY range, similar to Justicars For the Chapter. This makes the Apoth a bit more useful as a support character, but only "a bit" tho^^

I hate this class and so I have no personal experience with it but I have read there is a bug with the biomancy skull that results in all of your biomancy skills being stripped of any ability upgrades you have unlocked for them.

This has been most helpful. A shame about the apothecary and the paladin tho. Currently running 2 interceptors a justicar in Terminator armour and a purgator with a psilencer. Done few runs without a purgator using another justicar but I like having the firepower more.

What is the optimal level of Knight Requisition? Assuming you want to obtain advanced classes like Librarian, but you want them as close to level 1 as possible so you can customise them the way you want. Do advanced classes show up at level 1 of Knight Requsition or is there some other minimal level?

In difficult missions I've been running three interceptors and an apothecary and absolutely clapping cheeks. I have two teleport specialist interceptors and one melee powerhouse interceptor with high move value power armour. It's funny you say they are range specialists, as I find them better melee specialists than the justicar.

They’re not ranged units, it’s just that they are so good they can dominate any roll. My team was 1 librarian and three interceptors. Teleport in and wreck house with melee.

good video so far, but did want to point out that regarding the crit chance displayed on gear, your sword says 60% and that would include the wargear you have on. you mentioned 75% which leads me to believe you are adding that 15% on top, but it's included already. (which you can test by swapping it out)

You should revisit this post-nerf. Interceptors are still great but max +1 AP/WP refunded per action changes a lot. Also I think you are sleeping on Justicars.

This is nice to see going in especially since the other four classes are in. Quick question about the purifier. Is their cleansing flame something they can only use with the incinerator or is it like a psyker skill they can cast with any weapon?

3:40 Having recently ended up in a gamestate where I had two Psilencer-build Interceptors on a legendary run, I have to say that you are underestimating them. Which, to be fair, I was too, and I am still not completely sold on them being as good as the crit-build, but they are at least a viable option for the midgame, and possibly for most bosses. Here's what I've found about the Psilencer Build: - On-click Silence is great, as it completely shuts down psykers for a single AP. It works on bosses too. The psilencer also has access to the distrupt-shot. - A "free" 5 damage of Supporting Fire is more than it seems. First off, it's really 10 damage, because it will trigger twice per-character, and secondly it's an ability that will compound on itself, if you bring two psilencer-builds, at the cost of just keeping your shooters in range, you can get 20 points of "free" single-target damage, which is essentially a full kill once-a-round. On legendary, that is nothing to shake a stick at, especially since you still get to reposition your shooters to full cover, if you want to. As an extra, the damage from the skill actually ignores most penalties from debuffs and cover. At it's best, this skill is like a better version of "Smite", as it can secure kills at safe ranges for no cost. - Probably the greatest strength of the Psilencer-party is that they don't require any WP, which means they are an extremely strong strategy for clearing the "No WP"-Deed. ...and that's essentially it. It's a build with three strengths, those being single-target disruption, single-target damage-multipliers and not using WP. On Legendary, all of those can be useful, as long as you know what you'll be facing. I pair two Psilencer-Interceptors with a Purgator with Blind/Vulnurables and a Justiciar with the Ranged/Command-Build. No access to executions, obviously, but it's a safe and reliable squad.

Maybe class tier is dependent on your team's composition? Assuming you use one or two interceptors, and no paladin or apothecary, the relative value changes. If you don't incorporate a Librarian, a second interceptor might be worth it. If you don't have a second interceptor, the group teleport might be very interesting. I think one of each will be more versatile and if not better, feel less like cheese. Having two might be nice to alternate them if one is wounded. I think the justicar might be S class based on his strengths. Even if he does no damage at all, giving 4 ap doubles another character! Soaking and sharing armor is perfect for all squishy teammates. The last character depends on taste. The purifier seems fun, fire and grenades, what's not to love? The purgator might also be great, is it the right kind of DD? Maybe if the interceptor and librarian combo practically kill everything on their own, more buffs from a Chaplain (or Paladin) could be better. Or just keep everyone alive is best if you don't need more damage? Probably there are limited number of viable combos that will be better than any other similar combo? Like maybe 6-10 or so?

personally, i play games to have fun. I really love the Justicar's in termi plate. Big, beefy, and with minimal investment on the ranged tree, get a psycannon as their ranged option. give them a melee weapon of choice and you actually have a decent all rounder & tank - especially for early game. I will say, the purgator is busted, with that ability that auto inflicts a critical hit + it gets some weapons which ignore armour. its fantastic at just mowing through beefier targets whilst my other Brothers act as cleanup & support. Running a Justicar with the AP & WP buff with a Purgator is a great duo. I just ran a mission running 2 Justicars with the buff, a Purgator & an apothecary and boy do i miss that teleport on the Interceptor. Mission was fine & dandy, though takes a while with the beef squad. Sadly both my Interceptors were hurt so i sat them out, and im not far enough to get the special classes yet. I really want the librarian, whilst the others i am not majorly fussed about Also, being a major lore nut, i love the small details, but dislike 1 major detail and thats the Dominus of the ship. She's too uncanny valley & expressive for my tastes. But then again coming from mechainicus its a weird change

Your read on each class doesn't do a very good job on how they work together. For example, the Apothecary biomancies, which you dismissed, are absolutely broken when applied to a properly geared interceptor. My own Apothecary in my first run has a Narthecium(NAR-THEE-CEE-UM) which gives +1 duration for biomancies. Combine that with the skill and his biomancies last 3 turns, though it's actually more like 5-6 if I'm properly chaining non-combat turns into combat turns repeatedly because going from combat to non-combat and vice-versa appears to count only as a single turn even though each unit generated 3 AP twice. The interceptor he's buffing has 100% crit on Force Strike and can 1-shot a blightdrone(?) 100% of the time when under the effect of the Warp Speed biomancy. And that's my build for when I'm deliberately not winning as hard because Iron Arm biomancy is even stronger. Putting it on the exact same interceptor gives us the ability to produce 4!!!!! stun per attack, meaning two attacks before executing for both of the plague caster units and the same for terminators. Literally 1 attack and then execute for regular plague marines. Add in the Chaplain's litany for +1 AP on execute and you've got an interceptor that can kill a literally infinite number of plague marines in one turn as long as they're close enough together. EDIT: To be clear, this isn't good in place of the Justicar, it's good alongside the Justicar. Justicar/Interceptor/Apothecary is the broken OP game combo that just trivializes most challenges because Justicar/Apothecary buffs go very well together and Interceptor is easily the best target for those buffs. Chaplain is a nice bonus but I think you can pretty much add any fourth wheel to this OP menage-a-trois. Biomancy range is not a problem at all, why would you ever need range? You've got at least 3 turns of duration on all abilities and, with this combo, fights absolutely never last 3 turns unless you're chaining fights together into one big mess. Apothecary is just absolutely not a healer. Healing is just something it also does. No, the apothecary is the support caster and it does this job quite well. Also, healing is not a replacement for armor. Armor is mandatory and healing is for dealing with damage that bypasses armor(like Plagued). EDIT UPON WATCHING FURTHER: I disagree with almost everything in this tier list. It feels like you're fundamentally misunderstanding the pace of the game and treating it like it's XCOM. I know they look very similar but the unit tactics are completely different. Standing back and shooting is a complete mug's game in Chaos Gate. You need to be using AP generation, movement, and buffing abilities to end fights within 1-2 turns. Enemies have armor and healing which means the damage reduction from cover matters a lot, as well as the warp % putting missions on a soft turn timer. On top of that, reloading eats into your AP as surely as it fails to generate any. Melee actually generates AP, harvests seeds, and selectively removes threats from some of the toughest enemies. Any list that puts Purgators above Apothecaries and Justicars is just... wrong. Just wrong in every way.

That would be monolithly ignorant and useless and I'm quite sure not what the author intended, given that he does include several comments about how classes work together in the tier list.

@@PenitentChaplain Why? Well it is because any combination can be made to work in Legendary with a combination of skill selection, gear, and tactics, and which combo you find the most enjoyable is highly subjective.

@@p_serdiuk Sure, but if you want a perfect example of how individually good players don't make a good team, or good team strategy, Team Liquid's current LoL esports roster is a perfect example; 7 million in player salaries and no important wins. This game isn't so hard you can't play it inefficiently, but you're still playing it inefficiently. Any meaningful discussion of the utility of an individual class in a tactics game must include the context, the competition, the teamwork... or there's very little point at all.

Use the stun grenades with the buff from the chapelain to get more ap from execute and end up clearing loads of ennemies with alot of ap to spare

I noticed the Purgator's melee category is orange/yellow. Is that because they are weak at melee and strong at ranged, or is there another reason?

I think your underselling the justicar. I've been really out of postion with my knights and just having a justicar able to walk into the middle of no cover and just get all the armour in the universe, he got shot by 2 stacks of enemies (minus a few I killed) and only took 2 hp, wasn't even injured after the fight Also Iron-arm biomancy on a stun heavy (hammer that has extra stun) paladin, and well with all the excutes I get the honour the chapter seems weak

Definitely. Justicar is the best overall class IMO. Honor the Chapter, even after the nerf, is fantastic. The Warp Charged version sucks now but it saves you a point if you know this going in. One thing the game does not make immediately clear is that the Justicar is the only class that 1) unlock terminator armor 2) unlock Psycannon 3) wield the Psycannon in one hand. This is amazing especially if you get some armor with the anchored trait which negates ranged weapon penalties. So you can be decent at melee (Hammerhand and general melee buffs), decent at ranged (Psycannon is way better than a Bolter) and also have fortress and honor the chapter.

@@alexandreboureau6175 you can and it is mainly the right hammer that does it as well so Intercepters can be teleport stuning ppl but the iron arm lasts 3 turns so even if they are just apart enough to avoid the endless march of death you get 2 more turns of stun hammer

I used 2x justicars, librarian and interceptor. 95% of the game was killing all enemies in first turn, two of the bloom bosses got killed first round too. You get so much AP to interceptor with Librarian bringing more mobility too to whole squad. Interceptor was built as melee critter(and stun), it critted almost every hit.

Although Dantics review of the Justicar was spot on, the rating he gave to the Justicar made it seem lack luster, but the Justicar is the backbone for any squad if you ask me.

@@mangaranwow2543 Fully agreed. If you had good interceptor and used 2x Justicars, it broke the game. It was rare occasion where enemies got more than two turns, basic mobs died on first turn always.

btw Castellan Crowe is classified as a purifier (he's the top purifier of the grey knights) even though he's a melee-purifier,w ith rgenades and psycics and all the stuff

purgator i use storm bolter that give bonus to psybolt +4 dmg and you can upgrade ignore armor for stormbolter

I would slightly disagree with the part about the Interceptor not being surviveable, because he is one of the few classes who gets the Aegis Shield discipline. Granted that if you want to double down on the melee/teleport it is unlikely you will have spare skill points, but that might be a bit of an overkill anyway. If you swap the Teleport Strike discipline with Aegis discipline, you can have a teleporting crit machine with a strong shield to boot.

This is a great in-depth guide, very nuts and bolts detail! I'm at the beginning on my first play through, and I'm currently building up an all Terminator squad (for the thematic role-play). Any ideas for an effective (but least likely to be nerfed in the future) combination? From your tier system I was thinking about Paladin + 3 Terminator Justicars. That is, the Paladin x3 Honour the Chapter = 15 APs for him to move, tank, stun and execute enemies up front. Mid-range support also comes in servo skull heals, psycannon damage and armour transfer from Justicars.

I did that same thing for my second playthrough! Was a lot of fun feeling super tank. Honestly that build would work just fine. Pumping up one knight to do the lifting is rewarded quite well as you only really need to pop good gear onto one. This wouldn't work with the Librarian or Chaplin, and Paladin has some good killing power if invested into. I'd go melee personally and maybe find some movement related armour. Like you mention, one or two servo skulls, grenades, and psycannons on the Justicars.

Having one of the justicars invest in Agis and taunt is a great move, certainly early game. 14 armour a turn, plus forcing enemies to attack him is great. He doesn't care. Bonus points of you pull the enemy through fire and overwatch, or remove ranged weapons so they have to charge him. Also, very useful for running through enemy overwatch so his pals can operate freely. Foes with armour pierce will be a problem. I assume there are some, though I'm not all that far into the game.

I feel like you’re doing the apothecary an injustice. It can heal critically wounded knights, and if you keep healing your wounded knights, you won’t have to worry about benching them for several days

Is there a time limit in this like XCOM? That ultimately made me decide to not play it but unfortunately I wasted my money and found that out after release. I just can’t stand doomsday clocks. It adds too much of a pressure. I did notice planets have a time limit in this game. What happens in that regard?

The missions that pop up as a group have a time limit to travel to, so you cannot do all of them. It forces a choice, more than anything else, and keeps the difficulty creating up as the game goes on. In mission, (other than maybe some set ones) you can take as long as you like, though you will start running low on willpower and equipment. The warp surges encourage you to keep moving, as they can do all sorts of things, from debuffing Knights, to bringing in new enemies.

I love this game. It was incredibly frustrating at first, and I gave up for awhile... but damn once it clicks it becomes one of the most authentic and enjoyable 40k experiences out there. You're fucked from the start. The odds are completely against you and there's never enough time or resources. The daemons get stronger every day, and you always lag behind. And you have to fly around an entire sector expending finite resources (prognosticars can only be attuned once!) to play whack-a-mole trying to stomp out an escalating Nurglite invasion. Yep, couldn't be more true to the spirit of 40k

NGL I prefer the XCOM formula with misses, insentivises a plans within plans approach also seems like (been only through the early game though) the difficulty due to lethality of enemy attacks is way higher in XCOM, first enemy type on max difficulty in XCOM EU isn't a guaranteed one shot while being able to one shot any of your guys doesn't make sense for grey knights but I like having a big roster with some exhaustion mechanic that forces you to actually switch all your soldiers in and out and not just repeat use the same guys over and over (only XCOM 2 semi fixed that, in Aliens Dark Descent I almost used the same 4 marines for every mission)

I've played both. They are two different games packaged in the same skin. Mech was slower and simpler. Daemon is flashy but with real complexity in its bones. Mechanicus still wins on OST though. Children of the Omnissiah slaps.

Does anyone know if XP is mainly obtained by the unit that makes a kill? It seems like my interceptors level up much faster, and they do a lot of the killing. At the very least supports seem to spend willpower but have a harder time earning it back since their skills are not getting them kills directly. Interceptor and Purgator seem very strong because they can reach out and kill very quickly and efficiently. Finish the battle quicker with less warp surge built up and are easier to position. It feels like the other classes are better when the enemy has to approach you, and your team has higher armor so you won't take attrition. Maybe in harder modes or later in the game the interceptor stops being less safe? This would assume that you have trouble killing everything, then the interceptor is in more danger after they teleport in. Feels like a slower paced game where you can more safely take a turn to get into position or make the enemy have to come to you is where some of the slower classes can shine.

After having played chaos gate for a good amount of time now, i can categorically say, get a liberarian, and your good no matter what. Librerian is so fucking OP compared to anything else because of infinity gate its fucking riddiculous. And also the S tier comp, is justicar+librarian+apothecary+interceptor. Infinete damage, movement and AP.

like your video, would swap your Justicar / Purgator though. I feel like any sort of ranged damage is inferior to melee, since you need to move into position anyway, giving you wasted actions on a ranged build, but melee can attack as part of their movement, so running around means less wasted actions. Another point for Justicar is that honor the chapter is even better than you stated here i feel. Math: You would need somehow 10 Actions to kill an Enemy group with your party, aka if you have 4 knights, and they all need to move turn one at some point, you have only 8 Actions. But with Honor the chapter you can go into position with 1 knight, start doing damage and then not waste any additional movement on other character that would need to get to the same position. Its just soo good.

Ranged have the advantage of being able to set up in a defensive position, and attack. It's very easy to leave a melee character in a bad spot, or accidently activate another enemy mob. Sure, shooting play is slightly slower, but it can be more powerful with the area attacks.

@@zlobzor Plus the game throws situations where one is better than another. Things like Plague of Flies units that have reduction on ranged damage in an aura around them, and Warp events like ones that make enemies explode in an area around them when they die, which is hazardous to melee. Not to mention Plaguebringers having a 50% chance to deflect any melee attack. Ultimately flexibility is king I think.

Late game you can get some ridiculous range via T2/T3 guns, equipment and abilities. I like Purgators a lot. The ranged crit ability is great too, you can pull seeds with it just like Hammerhand and also disable most ranged enemies.

The Interceptor is indeed great, but if you use his abilities as described you've just used up all his WP on one encounter. Have fun with the 10 other groups you'll be fighting on the map.

I found the paladin to be a really strong tank, who also had the capabilities to go on stun/execute sprees, which was doubly impressive since legendary difficulty makes executions nigh on impossible. Giving him a thunder hammer with +3 stun, buffing him with apothecary biomancies, increasing his movespeed with an armor, casting litany of hate from a chaplain, and sometimes pairing it with a brain mine grenadier purgator, I managed to get the paladin to have a grand total of 23 AP, this being AFTER he single handedly annihalated 2 patrols.

I like pairing paladins with buffs from apothecary/purgator debuffs and a justicar for warp charge honor the chapter, soften up the enemies, paladin recharges justicar willpower at the start of his turn then regains it all on a kill/execution spree. Gives a constant stream of willpower but its nicer if the justicar has warp meter increase reduction/removal gear to prevent constant surges.
