Ok, so was this basically a time of unparalleled peace for the rest of the Warhammer world? Cause it seems like literally every evil bastard in the world was busy having a go at Bretonnia during that one period in particular.
I guess they were just a lot of assorted threats, but all those threats werent that huge. Like a single norscan raiding fleet, an undead incursion, an orc horde and beastmen warherd but not in the numbers like they had for example in End Times.
VladTutushkin I’m pretty sure the orcs were at full strength and easily in numbers such as during the end times. Most of the great battles were against the orcs, and it we can believe a bit the stories.... well. It must been atleast a enormous orc waaagh. Or several. For the norscans, true, a single fleet capable of besieging a huge city with enormous naval defenses.... it must been sizable. Atleast. For the undead and beast men, the two together, without even speaking for the tomb kings that went from the south...

@@Iruka1991 Estimates, while obviously non-conclusive, put the 'great' heathen army at a few thousand warriors at most. Also, they didnt conquer the entirety of England. But sure, the analog may be correct
I think Sigmar basically smacked around everything by around this time so they probably all decided to go after Bretonnia instead. They never would have guessed the power simping knights can bring to bare though!
Thank the Lady for this video, for reminding me of my vow. I was on the verge of succumbing to corruption and abandoning my current Bretonnia campaign. The Bretonni infantry may not be great and route as soon as the fighting starts. So what? They still do their best to support the knights, to protect their homes, to protect Bretonnia! FOR ZE LADY

So how does it sound to not have any social mobility, to be illiterate for your entire life, not being able to worship any religion in public, to pay back to the noble 90% of what you earn, have your children abducted if they show that are capable of magic (and the boys never return) and so on and on, then Bretonnia is the perfect place for you if you're a lowborn.
@@ganerdeneuurtsaih9953 I know, Bretonnia is such a shit hole if you switch perspective from noble to lowborn. If I'm not wrong in the lore the Empire tried a few times to instigate revolts against the nobility but the problem was that the nobility cracks down so much on peasants that they are not able to organize. At least in Kislev it makes sense why they are a little bit harsher considering that the kingdom needs to be as stable as possible to be able to fight all the chaos invasions. Even The Empire is more chill where as long as you're not a chaos worshiper or suspected to be one you are pretty much alright.

They’re a bunch of Cavemen. Face it. They needed a miracle to save themselves since they were not strong enough to do it themselves. Now against the “Great Teeming Hordes Of Rats!” I don’t think they can win a fight in the long run. But hey everyone have what they like. I just like my rats.
@@PandaWolf525 same with the tribes of Sigmar .... On the other side, they resisted better than the empire to a massive invasion of the skavens. They weren’t reduced to two cities, and the y acknowledge the existence of skavens. Unlike the empire

Just started playing Total War but I dont have any background on the Warhammer universe. Your videos really help a lot to get me into it and make my games more immersive. Thank you. Watching your videos in between and after work to get really caught up into the lore.
The dragon frechy let Breton killed was green. They describe the cloak he had made of its scales. The Knights of Bretonia trilogy describes it in detail. Furthermore he totally became the green knight.
Rather late with this but the dragon was red. The armybook describes it as such and these are canon. Many books made mistakes like that and GW had stated several times that only info in the armybooks and some White Dwarfs are canon.
@@visitingforgefather5997 Oh there are quite a few. GW and canon consistencies are a problem. I was an undead player back in the hero hammer days. Nagash got retconned horribly.
@@mikewaterfield3599 Yeah they sure mess up quite a few times. I was a dwarf player, got big into the lore and such. To this day one of my biggest bugbear (among many) was them messing up the name of the Ancestor God of runecraft Thungni ever since 6the edition I think they kept referring to him as Morgrim, who is the Ancestor God of engineering . Even in Total War Warhammer they still messed it up despite him getting referenced in it. I openly admit this is me getting annoyed by small stuff since there are SO many worse mistakes they made. The constant retconning of the origins of the Slayers is almost hilarious.
Gun-Slinger Swordsman what I don’t get is why they didn’t try making them fight each other. Green skins hate skaven just let them fight each other while you deal with the beast men lol. I guess it was a long time ago maybe they didn’t know
@@balance1619 they most likely didnt know and also Bretonnian knigts are a bit on... well... dumber side. Think of them as school football team, look great, really strong but also have a brain of a hamster and unable to strategize outside of their rigid understanding of combat.

Amazing video as always. Puts together the whole founding of Bretonnia in one combustive episode. You guys really nailed the heroism of Gilles and his Companions. You guys got to do the Crusades into Araby next.
Divinity in the WH mythos seems to have few Holy by nature types of entities and more Gods that are good at War which makes sense but in the paragon of Gods intervening it’s a little lopsided especially given how many Chaos gods are in play. Like the deck is stacked against the forces of good in their reality. Edit: maybe an Old One took the form of the Lady to give Men a fighting chance?

If you condone disguised slavery I guess Bretonnia is a fine place to live in, presuming there are no threats looming in the neighborhood. The alternate option would be living/dying in a place with no hope and overrun by the forces of Chaos, Beastmen, Greenskins and Skaven.
@@MrVlad12340 Of course, I meant the alternate option of living in the same lands but without the nobles to protect them. And yes, the Empire is by far a better a place, that´s however still shitty. All in all ... I wouldn´t want to live anywhere in that world.
@@AurioDK Honestly I'd rather be a vampire with my own remote kingdom and undead army. I'd try to protect my people and provide a decent quality of living in exchange for volunteers to donate blood for my court, like only a pint at a time once a month, nothing that would tax them unnecessarily. *Yes I know this is basically what Ushoran did and he got taken down but I'd at least pay tribute and lip service to Neferata to avoid that happening to me.
@@chrisdupuis2523 The whole vampire concept is a bit screwed up in most books and tv shows. Humanity has since the dawn of science been searching for immortality, if vampires were real there would be thousands if not millions in line to donate blood for a remote chance to become immortal, vampires would not go hungry to bed, that´s for sure. Even in modern times people get their heads/bodies frozen in cryo containers, no, vampires would be worth their weight in antimatter. Unless the vampire is an outright psycho there would be no reason to kill people and turn them into vampires, in fact a vampire´s worth would be measured in their numbers, the more vampires the less worth they are. They should always fear the religious fanatics though :).
by the Lady of the Lake and Lich King, this has to be the most magnificent well writing story I ever read/heard, tear starting forms on my eyes on the twelfth battle where the Campione surrounding those savage beast, the green-skin and the stinking vermin from all sides, but the Campiones did not fear but it not ease my worry the kept dwelling in my heart. Each word pass, when the twelfth Battles starting to reach it Climax, I burst down in Tear and grasp my hands tightly listen closely to the end how Campione's come out victorious!!!! Then my heart sunk when Gilles weres struck down by the arrow by an unknown assassin and cried in grieve and joy when I read Gilles's final last words. I don't know how to describe when my emotion become swelling around in my heart, this is kinds of a story I've always wanted to read, and thank you posting this one.

@@yeeyee5057 they cant get close if you blast them with organ guns, bombards from gyrocopters and flame throwers. Learn the way of black powder and steam, it helps.

I just want to say thank you for this video. This is without a doubt the most epic story of Warhammer lore I've heard. I grew up on the stories of Arthur Pendragon & the Knights of Camelot so this video hits home real deeply for me. I enjoyed every minute of this so much. One has to respect the fact that a bunch of knights were so hyped up to go kill some greenskins they either summoned or outright CREATED an actually Good-aligned Daemon... Who buffed them to amazing levels. It's like I've told some of my friends in DnD; "Paladins use Charisma instead of Wisdom to cast... because we bully and/or charm our GODS into giving us the POWER TO SMITE!"
As other said - she was an elven hag. And then insert "We trained them wrong, as a joke" meme since that was the whole idea with The Lady and wood elfs duping Bretonnians for years.
This got me wanting to play Bretonnia in TWW2. I started a campaign and was doing alright. An undead army attacked one of my towns and I managed to wipe the entire army out losing only about 50 of my garrison force. Then the single Vampire lord proceeded to kill over 200 of my guys on his own, broke my army and won the battle. I decided then I'd go back to my Elves..
Man this must be an alternate reality where goblins on wolves can actually go toe to toe with grail knights. Or any kind of knights whatsoever... Lol Great content I know I’m late but amazing lore video.

I am not sure if it jas been said. Apparently the basis of an entire government can be formed of watery tart throwing a sword at you. Or in this case a Chalice.
Because it’s not french. It’s England, they use English mythology, peasantry have English accents and use the longbow, and the aristocracy talk with french accents, just like medieval England.
