@@susragejr477 true, Mario Odyssey was awesome, but I'd still say Nintendo took nowhere near as many creative liberties with that game as compared to a wario land entry. Not to say Mario games don't have any creative energy or anything (seriously, there's reasons Mario games are as solid overall), but wario is far more japantastic lmao
I absolutely agree with that last block too. Mario Odyssey was absolutely solid, perhaps the post-game isn't as exciting as the main-game, but I wouldn't call the game boring for that reason
This game is the entire reason I'm a gamer, and the reason I love Wario. So thank you very much AntDude92 for saying almost nothing but good things about it. It's also probably the first game I ever completed too. The red sky course in the golf minigame you can play once you get all the musical coins isn't too rewarding, but at least it's something for all that hard work. Also, having the option to beat the final boss and hear that Perfect! music while Wario smiles at you is the best thing ever.
I just spotted Wario Land 1,3,4, and Shake It at my local retro game store yesterday, I gotta run back and buy 'em all up~!! Talk about underrated, I'm so excited to play through this hidden gem if a series.
l1o2q3u4i5n Only trouble is... I hospitalized myself with an injury the day before I went to buy 'em-!! I'll have to beg a friend to go pick these hidden gems up for me~
This is my favourite game of all time and is the reason I'm a full on gamer. Didn't know it at the time, but it's actually part of the genre known as Metroidvania. Though I don't think I've ever seen one do things like this before or since. The other games are pretty good too, but this is the one you need to play for maximum fun. Plus, the music that plays when you do everything is amazing as well. Antdude, you probably don't care about comments on videos as old as this, but I have to say it's good to know we both share a love for this game. I even have an idea to make a game similar to Wario Land 3 only bigger and better. Will probably never be made, though. Oh well, great review anyway. As a trollfacing Wario, I heartily approve.
If you can make it fully 2-D, with a dedicated 8-bit/16-bit/32-bit, or 2-D cell shaded "Shake It!" vibe, with smooth character animation for ALL characters, then yes. 👍
I overall liked the game. However, I felt there was too much time wasting with enemies constantly sending you back and forcing you to make you way to were you came from. It might not sound too bad. But after having to use 2-5 minutes getting back to a certain part again for the 10th time.. yeah.
That's the game's way of punishing you for failing. In a Mario game the enemies would straight-up kill you but the result would be the same: having to play part of the level again. But no enemy in Wario Land 3 is too hard to avoid. You just have to... you know... git gud. ;P
To be fair, this game goes into an " Metroidvania " style of an platforming game. There's an reason that u have to backtrack in some areas. But you only need to collect the 5 music instrument to be the main game. The rest is just getting all the treasures to 100% the game.
It's basically a Metroidvania for babbies. Which ISN'T a burn on it. It's like an awesome puzzle-platformer where you can easily finish the game with no sweat but it's just so much fun seeing Wario get sick pumped every time you find a new treasure!
It really is a shame that the Wario Land series has been all but forgotten... especially 3, which I agree is the best of the series (with 2 at an extremely close second).
I got this when I was a kid. Never got past the first few levels though. I wasn't used to the whole back tracking thing yet so I kept going to the next level without the right treasures and getting stuck. P.S: So you butt stomp those frogs to get to lower levels! I KNEW they had to be there for a reason. That's been bugging me since I was like 8.
I loved this gem as a kid! Because of the prices of the GB games back in the day, my mom only bought few games, this gem and Wario Land II being in that exclusive list! Thank you for your review, you made me go back in time for a while!
This was my first game with the gameboy color. I wasn't sure at all when I was a kid, but dam, I WAS SO ADDICTED ! One of the best GBC game of all time !
The first wario land was always one of my favourite games, after a friend got 2 I dismissed the sequels thinking they were crap for not being able to die. Now that I see how they look I wish I had given them a chance when I was young. Never too late though
One of the coolest things about the Wario Land series is how they change between games. The first was Mario-esque with powerups and 1-hit deaths, but the second had no powerups and "damage" only causing Wario to lose a few coins. The fourth, World, and Shake It (which I recall you suggesting, and which I'm LPing now) have a greater focus on treasure and coin collecting and had Wario with a Zelda-esque hearts system.
I did notice the similarities between Wario Land 3 and Pokemon's second generation of games (Gold, Silver, Crystal). Not only are all for the Game Boy Color, but have day and night gimmicks. I hope this game gets a remake.
Oh my...Nostalgia... You bring me much memories of this. It was one of my favorite Wario Land Games that I have never played and I had this one in GBC. I remember when I had played this one when I was ten years old. Wario Land 3 was the best and I love anything from this game... From the amazing soundtrack until the puzzles of this game.
"A day/night mechanic in a 2D platformer, you can't tell me that's a common occurrence." *James Rolfe begins having Vietnam Flashbacks to his first video*
As a child, the GBC was my thing. The Pokemon games, the Oracle games, and Wario Land 3 were all major parts of my childhood. The thing I regret is never being able to get past the first treasure of Turtle Rock because I never found all the breakable walls. I only was able to get farther than that by emulating the game years later.
This was possibly the first game I ever owned, for my first ever console (like green GBC)…I would play this every day at recess and during long car rides…. The nostalgia for this game is crazy 😭
The immortality/invincibility thing of Wario Land is exactly the thing that DMC needs (instead of overpowered cutscenes and the protagonist dying in-game from much less damage _than a bullet to the face or a sword through the chest..._)
Carl Bloke A protagonist that takes evisceration and devastation to the face and still smiles unharmed in the cutscenes, but dies from a few punches in-game is stupid. If the devs want an immortal protagonist, they should stick to it and offer action- and battle-packed puzzles instead. What they published instead is for dumb button-masher simpletons.
Carl Bloke If a bullet to the eye in a cutscene doesn't kill you, but a few scratches afterwards in the game do, *that's* bullcrap. I'm not a stupid simpleton enough to commit the fools' crime of suspension of disbelief. If you wanna play a game that makes no sense whatsoever, do it and be a fool for yourself, but spare my patience.
VisualGourmet your being a fool right now truly ignorant of what DMC needs. What you said is nothing but nonsense that only fools who know nothing about DMC
I LOVE Wario Land Games. I hope they make a new one soon. I've only played 4 and Shake it, but shake it looked AMAZING on the wii. Graphic limitations didn't give a crap.
Hey Anthony, Isn't this the game you LP'd back in one of your sonikdude channels? It was a great LP and got me into this game and the rest of the Wario games. Just want to say thanks for getting me into one of my now favourite seires.
Hey! We heard you like music boxes so we made you find music boxes inside a music box. I still have my GBC so I'll definitely try to hunt down an actual copy of this.
Yes! This game is great. I got it way back when, and played it though about 3 times. It gave me a different look at Wario and his character. I really love this game, and will probably buy it on the Virtual console for 3DS.
I own WL 2 and 3 for the Game Boy Color and I finally got to play WL1 thanks to the 3DS Virtual Console. I have to say, even though most people prefer WL3, my favourite is definitely Wario Land 2.
Spent some time searching out a good video like this. Played this game as a kid and I think I 100%ed it multiple times (at a time when I had the free time in car rides). This game is memorable not just because of how fun it was, but also because I don't think I've ever played another game to successfully setup a premise where the main character can't die - but the game is still made to be challenging. With many games eagerly trying out so many death systems, it actually seems like a concept that might have some interesting life to it.
I like part 2 too, it's pretty damn good. (What i talked about part 3 was a joke, in case you interpretated in the wrong way, but yeah, both Part 2 and 3 are great).
This game was one of the best games ever played for me. Playing it nd having to go back nd unlock new stuff. You can't beat one part unless you have certain power ups. Great game
Agreed. I played it a long time ago, and decided to replay it again about two weeks ago. It's still as fun as when I first played it. Seeing certain items open up the way to new areas never ceases to get me excited. For whatever reason though, I find myself going for all music coins in every level. I've found managed to find 10 - 15 levels worth of music coins, and only referred to walkthroughs for two or three of them. It's a pain, but I need those coins!
Oh fuck yes Wario Land, played the piss out of the first two but never got around to hitting up the 3rd one. Might just have to look into changing that some time soon
yeah warioland 2 is so underrated! the music is dope and it is super unique for the time with the mechanics. 3 is good tho i just hated going back to lvls over and over again
I got this game for like €8 at a yard sale... I doubted if I should buy it, so i checked IGN for a review, (not the best place to check, but it was the first link to pop up) and saw that IGN rated it a 9.3, so I ended up buying it. No regrets
My main complaint with this game is all of your unlockable moves are just moves he had in previous games. Once you get past this and gain an understanding of the game's structure, it really sucks you in. The only gripe you'll have to deal with is getting hit and taking an annoying status effect, forcing you to backtrack to retry that spot.
Oh, and the Golf mini game. I can't decide if I love it or hate it. It's pretty hard sometimes but it's amusing because it's bizarrely prevalent in the game.
My favourite game!, I especially loved your LP of it back on SonikDude. I have this game on Game Boy Colour, and I recommend to play it on the go, its one of those awesome adventure games to get stuck into. Of course I could rack up the character limit and wright my own review here but to be honest CBA! :P, Nevertheless awesome review and great nostalgic moments of your LP and my childhood. Yay!
It’s 2022 and I just added this to my 3ds on the eshop…….$5 Great game I only beat Wario land 4 on gba so I figured I would go back in time! Eshop closes jan 22nd
Man I do agree that this game is stellar, but 2 and 4 are much superior in my opinion. But that's like the best problem to have. All 4 Wario Lands are so good.
This is one of those games I had and now I can't find it. If I rebuy it I hope it's not Chinese. You made some good points. There's kind of a lot going on in this game but looks fun.
