Warm roof vapour barrier gives temporary protection

I'm often asked how we cope with bad weather when installing warm roofs. The trick is to use the air vapour control layer as a temporary roof cover at that particular stage. You can strip the roof and then put the air vapour control layer over the new decking and make it not only airtight but watertight to the room down below. You can then leave this area vapour control layer out in the Sun and bad weather for up to 3 months you are using Alutrix 600 can we do. But theoretically two or three days may pass with rain and then you can gain a good weather window and start the rest of the wall roof. You must make sure that everything is dry and the insulation that you are going to install in the warm roof is dry. In the video, I show to 3 different examples of how we do this on large and on small jobs. The air vapour control layer is extremely strong and takes people walking over it without it getting punctured.

Nice to see you back Steve....I picked this tip up from you a few years ago and it's one of the best things I've ever done. As a self builder on my own, it gave me breathing space to get the job done properly without rushing. This stuff isn't cheap, especially when using the primer too, but the peace of mind it gave me was priceless..... And I also know I've got probably the best vapour barrier going in the finished job.

Interestingly when u read the manufacture specification it tells you you don't have to use a primer unless the background is flaky or dusty so over new decks we dont prime. Do a test for yourself in cold weather place a patch on a scrap of OSB stand on it and walk back and forth leave for 1 hour then try to remove.
@BerkeleyTowers
@BerkeleyTowers 11 месяцев назад
@@SteveRoofer I'd noticed you hadn't used the primer and did consider not using it myself. I noted those specs as well but decided, cos it was almost certainly my last project, I'd go full "belt and braces"! Even though it was going down on new OSB3, it did give a really nice "grab" when putting the Alutrix down.

A good video and we use their product with our company’s warm roof system. However if you watch the installation video by the manufacturer they state the max time Alutrix 600 can be left as 5 weeks. It is due to sunlight breaking down the protective film of left longer .

I’m glad when we got our dormer roof done in 2020.. I listened to Steve and got this alutrix down. As we had a period of say two weeks where the roofers couldn’t come due to covid regulations and we had the alutrix membrane protect the roof until the insulation and ply was installed. Saved a real headache for us.

@@SteveRoofer the best thing is that the roofer who is a general contractor rolled his eyes at the product first. He thought it was overkill. But when he saw the benefits of it, he asked me to send details and that he would be using it going forwards on other jobs. 😄

I also used Alutrix on Steve's advice on my warm roof 18 months ago. Latest news is the roof is perfect, no movement inside like there was before, all warm & dry. The build is on my channel if anyone's interested. Again many thanks to Steve for all the advice.

Good to see you back. What do you put over the insulation? I have a garage roof which has felt on it and need to redo it due to leaks but not sure what to use. Would you be able to recommend a product. It is not insulated but the joists are accessible from below so could insulate. Thanks. Good to see some more content from you.

@SteveRoofer 11 месяцев назад
We norml put OSB over the institution but sometime just EPDM but then we use tissue faced insulation. If its just a garage and you dont want to insulate it or re felt it try EPDM strit over the top I gave my next-door neighbour a large sheet of EPDM. He just threw it over the roof and put some nails around the edges! It's been there for 15 years and still works and looks okay

Renovating an old stone house located in a warm country (40c), rebuilding the roof entirely, could you suggest any basic tips to avoid the heat penetrating thru the roof? What materials, stuff that I could use or way to build it.. the house has AC, but the rooms will be right under the roof, I dont want to use AC to cool the house from bad insulation against the heat.

hi - i will use the ALUTRIX 600 on a osb TG4 deck - do you need to prime it first? and dressing up brickwook abutments. Do you prime the brickwork upstands first. Thank you STeve

Hi Steve, love your vids! I'm looking to help prevent moisture in my single skin garage, but my question is, if I can't ensure a proper 'sealed' warm space, is there any point adding any insulation?? Or even a breathable membrane? Both are tricky due to how the roof has been built 😂. Many thanks 👍
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 11 месяцев назад
Depending on cost, anything is better than nothing in a way however, a tightness is what it's all about because of the cost of energy. If the wind is blowing through then you're gonna lose all your energy not only that if it's wet and moist outside that's gonna come inside

No you're looking at that incorrectly. If you watch the video you'll see that at the moment the fall is incorrect because we blocked the outlet off we open the outlet and bingo it. All dries have another look

Nice job, is that alutrix part of a system or a stand alone product?
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 11 месяцев назад
I suppose you could say it is part of the system. The only other part is a primer. If you've got a substrate that is dusty, they do say you should use a primer, but apart from that no other types nothing

Hi Steve, great videos very useful as Im currently building an extension with a large flat roof. Im going to put a resitrix primer on top of OSB and then the Alutrix on top of that, followed by 150mm celotex and OSB T&G on top of that. The question I wanted to ask you is whether you have used a liquid roof, Everbuild Aquaseal, on top of the OSB and put it over the alutrix that is running around the inside of the parapet? and if so, did it stick ok?
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 10 месяцев назад
No, I've never used that, but realistically you can cut your alutrix level with the top of the insulation so there's no need to go over the alutrix

It's been around many years I've been using it for about 10 years and we've never had a problem with it but of course that isn't the roof covering. That's just the vapour barrier. You need to send me more information by email. If you're in London that's my area so hopefully speak soon.

Hi Steve, I'm doing a self build annex, I have watched a few of your brilliant videos but have a question I haven't found an answer to yet: What is the correct way put EPDM down over mechanically secured Kingspan TR27 insulation with regard to adhesives? Do you treat the TR27 like OSB and just glue it?
@SteveRoofer
@SteveRoofer 11 месяцев назад
TR 27 is tissue faced so you can go directly over it with adhesive. We normally use contact adhesive from a spray canister.

Its not good cold roofs have so many problems If you do a cold roof the key points are Good though ventilation a good Air Vapour Control Layer (AVCL) and make suer internally as you finish your construction you keep the internal relative humidity down construction moisture in roofs in the winter is killer

@northeastcorals 11 месяцев назад
@@asif530 I've just finished 1 small flat warm roof, 1 large flat cold roof & 2 large pitched cold roofs on my place & went with the old fashioned tarps which cost anywhere from £15 to £45 ish each on ebay depending on size & thickness etc. They are time consuming to fit properly in order to resist all wind & rain etc plus can be a pain in the backside if you need to roll them back & re-fit them several times during the work but they certainly do the job & I'd have been absolutely knackered without them.
