I have an additional suggestion, especially for a first time RV buyer. Take your phone and record the walk through when the tech is explaining all the different systems and how they’re operated. You may feel like you’ll remember everything while on the walk through because it all seems to make sense or seems easy BUT you’d be surprised as to how many things you’ll forget after you drive off the lot.

when i bought my camper in 2013 the dealership owned a campground and i got a "free" weekend to test everything out. i really liked that aspect of buying it. financing was a breeze too.

When friends purchased their new RV (towable), they arranged to stay in an RV park with hookups for 2-3 days. The first day or so, they connected to the park util and tested ALL aspects of the RV (lights, outlets, water pump, etc), then, they disconnected from the util and "pretended" they were boondocking and tested the same functions, before heading for home (they were w/ in 20 miles of the dlrship). I thought that was a smart way of doing it (even after the PDI by the dealer). Great topic; LOVE the show!! Y'all Be Safe!

Great plan. When we picked up our 5th wheel we had reservations at a local campground also for exactly the same reason. To test everything just as your friends did - on/off park power. We had friends who picked theirs up and headed on a 4K mile trip. Problems arose that made it miserable. We learned from their misfortune unfortunately.

@@danh.5537 You just made the best comment. Staying at your local R.V park directly after taking possession makes it a lot easier to return to your dealership for them to fix the issues you may have found, it will be (most likely) free, rather than finding the problem in another state and little to no dealers of your brand around. Great tip, especially for us newbies. 💞

From an RV tech: the PDIs we do upon delivery include every aspect of the unit. Fit/finish, all main systems, suspension/axles/brakes and wiring, leveling, doors, scratches, decals, lights and power system. We go through it with a fine tooth comb. Once the unit is selected by the customer we do whats called a "get ready" this is a secondary systems check including water heater, water system(pump and city), fridge, gas systems, slides, ac, heater and leaks. We also do a tank flood to check gages. This is when the propane tanks are filled and batterys are added. When the customer takes delivery we walk through the entire camper with them showing them top to bottom all the systems. We also do hookup for their vehicle and make sure brakes/ brake controllers and lights work properly. We want you to feel like your purchase was fun and not a burden. Jd is 100% right about customers (and salesman) who want it now. Please allow ample time for us to fix issues. It has to go back through manufacturer warranty approval and that can take days. Techs get paid on flag hours and we cant/wont work without approval :/. A little understanding goes a long way and will help get your unit out in proper form. ❤

Great video. This reason is why we changed dealerships. When I started going through the first one I was asked to stop. When I explained what I was doing they actually said “ It’s brand new, there’s nothing wrong with it” just as I find a non working plug, a slide that doesn’t retract properly and a black tank that wasn’t plumbed. When I filled the toilet with water and flushed, it poured out on the underbelly. They kicked me off their lot…. I was happy because we did this check just before signing on the dotted line

Yeeahh i wouldnt go back to that dealership. "Its brand new" just means it made a 1000 mile trek from the northeast to their lot by a driver with a lead foot and the attitude of "Its not my RV".

Sandra Westley from the UK we don’t have any problems like this we have been caravaning since 1978 when we bought our first one, and have had loads of different layouts since then over the years. But our dealers are really good at PDI and we have only had 1 problem with 1 van that we had. It wasn’t the dealerships fault either our tow bar needed a different wiring for the new van, and we were in France before it came to light, our fridge would not run while we were driving, and so defrosted each time we travelled. The dealer when he new, took our car straight away and got the wiring sorted immediately, not only that they also paid the £90 it cost, to make sure we were happy.

When I got my latest Jayco fifth wheel, it was mid December in VA. The unit had been winterized. The dealer unwinterized it, totally tested the water lines under pressure. Then re-winterized the unit. They had the unit set up with TV and refrigerator on, furnace on, and slideouts out. Totally did best job of PDI I have experienced in multiple purchases.

So glad you spoke about this. We even had to come back the following day, since we felt rushed since our PDI was at the end of the day. @richarddebray2325
@richarddebray2325 3 года назад
I love this channel, every single point is spot on. I'll add a couple that should be blinding flashes of the obvious but are often overlooked because we all get too excited about our new rigs. The first is your warranty clock begins the moment you accept your unit by signing your final sales documents. Make sure you complete that step after the PDI and only then AFTER the dealer takes care of any issues found. A proper PDI should take several hours as you go through everything JD says. Don't let the dealer sell you a promise of "we'll take care of that after your first check out trip..." That's a 6 month promise these days, all on your warranty clock. And finally, as you visit different RV dealers watch how they move their stock around especially on their designated customer PDI days. If you see RVs being moved with slides fully extended you are going to have problems with the slide mechanisms; not if, but when. This has actually become a common practice. No manufacturer condones moving an RV with the slides extended because it puts an incredible amount of stress on every component of slide and the frame.

I’m glad the dealership I used wasn’t like let’s get this done now. My salesman was like “I know you want this now, but you can’t have it. We have our PDI to do first so give us a few days.” They had a solid week to go over it. They also had a process in place that said no financial paperwork until walkthrough is done and signed off on. This was Camping World in Meridian, ID for the reference.

We unfortunately bought a trailer from them fall of 2016 and eventually with Manufacturers Approval had Bish's Rv next-door take care of warranty work Camping World refused to do. It took Camping World 2 years to get a glass guy to replace a window that they scratched while removing stickers during their so called PDI. Plus the fact that at almost 2years of ownership they Never registered our trailer with the manufacturer for our warranty. The manufacturer still showed our unit Unsold siting on their lot in Idaho Falls. Camping World 🤢🤮💯%

The only thing i would add is even after the dealership does their inspection, have them walk through it with you and demonstrate how the systems work. It has taken my Neighbor a year to get his issues resolved even after he asked the dealership to do the complete inspection. Once you leave the dealership you have to wait your turn to get your issues resolved.

Went to set it up and discovered the factory left out the plumbing, there were no water lines built into the the unit. So, missed at factory PDI and obviously dealership did not do a PDI. The people agreed to let the dealer run water lines down under the unit since it was a seasonal not going to be moved!

Picked up a Brookstone at Seguin RV yesterday, our 2nd trailer ever. Our first was a rushed job due to weather. This time I thought I knew what I was doing. They brought me in to sign before the PDI and now regret it. I picked them based off your experience but it seems they only do well when you collaborate with them. I'm envious of your experience with them. They refused to swap for a Goosebox. Refused to let me install the backup camera I bought from them. And had nobody to fix minor issues on a Saturday when there were multiple deliveries that day. They said techs don't work Saturdays...really? A busy day of customers picking up trailers isn't call for techs to work? I'm happy it worked out for you, regardless.

Check the spare tire. And not just the tire, check the wheel to make sure the bolt pattern is the same as the pattern on your axle. No matter the quality of the tire, if the wheel won't fit, it does you absolutely no good. Yeah, I recently learned that the hard way on my first big multi-state trip with my first RV. It's a brand new RV I just got in February. Had a blow-out on the freeway on Father's day and then found that the spare wheel bolt pattern didn't match. Thanks to the goodness of some local farmers who had the right tools, we got the spare tire on the original rim and was on the way. But still with a useless spare rim.

Through my research up to this point is not all manufacturers do PDI's on every single unit. Some only do PDI's on every fourth unit, etc..., so there is a chance your unit will not have had the first PDI done on the unit. The second PDI is just a quick walkthrough and look over of the unit because they want to get the transport driver on his way, so that PDI is not going to be thorough. The third PDI may or may not be thorough depending on the dealer and the situation. My recommendation is ask the dealer before you even decide on an RV if they allow third party inspection and that you will not sign anything until it's inspected by a third party first and all defects are taken care of. I wouldn't sign anything or put money down on it until it's completely make ready, but that's a decision you will have to make. I always say, never fall in love with anything and always be willing to walk away. Better safe than sorry.

I have a suggestion: open up your RV and wait for the wood smell to dissipate. If it doesn't let the dealership keep it. Our RV, we thought the wood smell was there due to the RV being newly shipped. After 7 years, it not only still had a strong wood scent, the wood smell would also get in our clothes, luggage, etc. We tried deodorizers, formaldehyde remover, sanitizer, chlorine treatment, etc. No it is not mildew or leftover wood in the basement. It is bizarre.

My sister just bought a brand new trailer. Based on a lot model. When the actual one finally came, they drove abit under 200 miles ( one way ) only to be told that the wrong keys came with it !!!! And paper work issues. So another day was scheduled for them to come back. As that day Drew closer she called to make sure everything was okay before they made a second trip down to the dealership only to find out that she was told that the guy normally only filled the water tanks one third of the way to check and make sure there was no leaks but had ran into the office got caught up in something and the tank was filled completely and it was a good thing he did because a crack in the top of the tank was located and flooded the underside of the trailer. The insulation was soaking wet and somehow water got into the floorboards and she rejected the trailer. So they made a new deal with her on the price of the trailer plus the price of gas for coming and going all those times and they removed the tank, they were going to weld the plastic tank, she said no she wanted a brand new tank put in or she was not going to accept the trailer which after some haggling they finally agreed to. So now she has a brand new trailer which as of yet she has not had an opportunity to take out simply because a lot of our forests are closed due to wildfires. If that tank had not been filled all the way they would have never discovered the leak till some time later & she would have had to be stuck with dealing with it.on her own.

Absolutely! I’ve owned four motor homes, three brand new and the last one was used. All of the new rigs were back in the shop days after we closed the deal. “It’s a bad Ensor on the fuel gauge... no problem... we’ll have the part in a week. The gas tank is really full...”. Driving to the campground down the road, I stopped just to top off the tank... Forty gallons later, we had discovered that the sensor was fine but the fill line was running UPHILL! And the dealer was “so amazed” about the problem. Turns out it was common with the model...

The reason it isnt like that is because that costs money. Technicians dont work for free, and theres a LOT of red tape going through manufacturer warranty to get them to pay for a lot of that work. Its a business trying to make money. A lot of the time after the initial inspection when a list has been made, you can end up waiting days or weeks for approval and parts to fix something. If a customer shows up and wants to buy that 130000 dollar toy hauler, you cant really tell them no just because there are fixes pending.

I bought my first travel trailer as a leftover (Forest River) and it was in decent shape, but we found our fair of defects given it was a leftover and sitting for a year +, but we didn't have a playbook so I'd be curious to learn from people who know a lot more than I did, especially after plunking down $20K+ of cash on a unit. Obviously the stakes go up the more you spend, so I'm hopeful you or the NRVTA can help the average consumer.

Everything is great on our new RV... except the fridge!! The fridge thermostat does work - been reported since April 30 and parts are on backorder... sigh!! Very annoying to have a seasonal campsite and NOT a working fridge - especially with kids! We purchased the RV in August 2020 and delivery wasn't until April 30, 2021 - more than enough time to have tested the components!

Here's my story, and I'm sticking to it. When I bought my AW 3660Suite, they schedule a time and date for you to come in, do your inspection and walk through, and THEN sign all the documents. They wont let you into the finance office until you sign off on the inspection. Good, right? Here is what I found on the inspection, they suck at doing a PDI. This is a 4 slide trailer, all are cable slides. I immediately spotted 3 bad cables. They had broken strands! I pointed them out to them. Inside I found 3 LED push button lights that didn't function, and the face on the radio was wiped down with a solvent that melted it. All these and a few other items were repaired, at the cost of 3 weeks in the shop after waiting nearly a month for parts to arrive, so the trailer was essentially useless for nearly 2 months after purchase. We took 3 trips, weekenders due to the Vid and time of year, and on our last trip the Furrion 12v refrigerator failed. I had also found a 1/4" gap between a slide seal and slide at the very top, so it went back in to the shop and spent from the day after the election until mid March until I could get it home. BTW, they killed the battery and did not fix the seal, but made it worse. Moral of the story, do not, never, trust the "dealer" or "service" to inspect it properly, do your OWN close inspection. I implore everyone who is looking for an RV and has never had one before to watch videos on the slide systems, how they work and what to look for when doing an inspection, and that goes for all the systems. You don't need to be a mechanic or electrician or plumber, you just need to know what to look for so that you can spot anything that is missed in the PDI.

Pretty much every brand has their own owners Facebook group. Join your brands Facebook group to find out what areas you should really focus on. What has been a significant problem for others. We are lucky, in our Cougar owners Facebook group, we have some Key stone insiders who are particularly helpful with trouble shooting. Especially with the Newbies. Our group has a consumer walk thru PDI list that I was able to print out for our PDI walk thru and use as a check list so we did not miss anything. Needless to say, our purchase process has been extremely successful. Check out your brand group for assistance and advice and don't let the complainers scare you away.

Make out an actual written checklist to go through when you do what BTBR is talking about here. Take some time while making that list and my advice would be to have it written out long before you're actually buying an RV. Make sure you've not just gone with the first list either, re-read and add to it as your knowledge increases due to your research. We live in an information age with basically the whole of humanities knowledge at our finger tips. So do your research before buying and not after. You'll be much more likely to know exactly what you're getting and if it's what you wanted to begin with. Don't rely on your memory alone because if you're checking things without an actual list in hand you will undoubtedly get home and realize you missed something. This is can be due to excitement, getting sidetracked or purposely distracted when you're doing your inspection. Hope that helps someone out...

Really watch camping world. They had camper for a week before pickup. Items worked, but, down the road blew out three tires (one after the other). Brother came to the rescue with tires. Further down the road the slide slid out. The drive was only tacked on. Forced it back and strapped it back in. Three months before we got it back. Dealer said it was manufacturers problem and they pissed back and forth. I could have built one faster.

Although I think you’ve hit on a great subject here I find it hard to believe a dealer would be willing to do what you’ve asked, keeping it in pdi for a few days to check things out! I’m sorry I just think most of us would just get either a blank stare from that request or a sure thing and it turns out to be just lip service.

The problem with that request for most dealerships is the extremely high number of folks who back out at the last minute. Similar to the automotive industry, your car won't get cleaned, tinted, made ready until you've signed a contract.

@dragonbutt
@dragonbutt 3 года назад
Technicians, porters and wash bay employees dont work for free. Someone has to pay for the prep and PDI. Its not like a destination charge when you buy a car. You are literally paying for the guys to make it ready for you.

@@dragonbutt I realize that but it's a cost of doing business. I would rather it be buried in the cost of the unit. Not a separate line item. Makes me more upset when there is issues later on that should have been fixed during PDI because now I have a price attached to their "work".

A side question: I see that you use SNAP PADS on your leveling legs. How much wider do they make the landing pad verses the original landing pad? Are they less prone to getting stuck in mud or dirt and do they prevent you from making an impression on soft surfaces (asphalt)?

@PastorwithoutaPulpit
@PastorwithoutaPulpit 3 года назад
That would depend on how secure your property is and whether you've had issues in the past and if it's a property that someone is actually living on. Also things like how well lit or if it can be seen from the house, you know things like that. That's what I would consider seeing as that lock is a lot cheaper than your unit I would guess...
