I received this Maple piece, along with another wood, from a viewer. The other was the reason for the viewer to send me the pieces but upon seeing this piece, I had to turn it, first! There is just something about the unusual that I cannot resist. Turned out pretty well, all things considered. It did take quite a bit of work to clean all the holes and sand the piece smooth but now it feels good and looks, well, you decide! Finished in shellac.

Thanks for not using resin in your work. So many of the turners on UTube use resin for just about any reason instead of highlighting the wood. You are not lazy, you are a bold turner, willing to let the wood tell you what to do.

I love the resin... something about watching those ribbons fly off of it that's so satisfying...& using resin is far from being lazy...you must not have ever used resin before, because it definitely adds some work to making a piece...& This one would look awesome with some resin in all the holes...

It's bold to call those that turn different than you lazy. Just because you don't enjoy a style is no reason to belittle. Using resin properly is anything but easy or a shortcut. In this creation it would seal the holes while still leaving them be a focal point.

I love it, Phil! I have a bunch of mesquite on my property that turns beautifully. It's always full of worm holes, but mesquite can get punky real fast, so you need to stabilize it somehow or it will fly apart. Mesquite gets very pretty colors in it too, in my opinion.

I like the look a lot. But I think if you took it now (as finished) and were able to line the inside with a layer of clear resin, then it would be more functional of a bowl than it is now. And yet it would retain the natural artistic look it has.

Phil I think that this is really a fantastic example of nature. Some etymologist is going to love it. I have some crazy idea that it could be modified as a night light or a table lamp if you were to put a cut out of the exact worms that made those holes in front of it and add a light to the bowl and it speaks for itself. I really think you're on to something and should make more of these. Thank you for your years of dedication to this art. I enjoy it immensely.

My favorite wood is the parts that look different, so you'll get no complaints from me. This piece looked too far gone, I would have sworn that it didn't have enough structure remaining to survive being turned. But you had it in your hands, and we can only see through the camera. For myself, I don't mind the wholes, what I don't like is finding a big punky spot that makes me have to change the shape, or worse give up. Maybe some day I'll make a video with some Butternut that ants have been chewing on, I've got a lot of it. Big black carpenter ants.

Hmmm, I'm really thankful there were no icky worms/bugs in those holes. I can guaran-damn-tee that I was not recommending you add some ridiculously colored resin. It's interesting that you notice that women aren't bothered by the bug holes, because my Mom and my niece both suffer from trypophobia, and I'm pretty sure this would make them both throw up. I would say that this isn't my favorite piece of yours, but I don't dislike it either. It's no honeysuckle root ball bowl. 😂

Watching you this evening got me thinking of my grandfather after whom I am named. I have a wooden bowl which he created about a hundred years ago. He also made a chopping blade with a radius which perfectly matches that of the bow!. It saw a lot of use by my grandmother and then my mother in the days before food processors. But, oh my grandfather, he had a cure for those worms. As I recall it contained a lot of coal oil and tasted like pooh. Glad that tenon didn't let go and take some part of your anatomy with it. They'd have you taking at least one more pill if it had. I like the bowl, worms and all.

Great story, Pete! 😊

The wood speaks to you! I know that sounds a bit erudite but in my crafts, sewing and knitting, the fabrics and yarns speak to me. You go with whatever you have in front of you and if along the way it seems you may have heard the materials incorrectly? You just change tack and adapt. Not everything I make appeals to me. But if I don’t like it I give it away..🤷🏼‍♀️ keep up the videos Phil! I would love to do woodturning myself but I am past it now. No strength. Love watching your creations, especially when the finish brings out the grain and texture!

Hi Phil, I can't say if I like it or dislike it but will say that it's truly unique!Like you said,,,it has to grow on you! It was a lot of hard work and making something from a piece of wood like that is always a challenge.I faced the challenge and made a nice work of art out of it,,,Bravo! I almost changed a diaper once,,,,only once!I had to phone my mom and dad to rescue me! This may sound odd coming from a life long plumber who is supposed to be #1 in #2 but I guess I just failed at my son's #2 challenge! LOL Thanks for the video,,,,and comentary!! You're a piece of work! LOL Tom

Haha, I knew there would be a few of us that understand the diaper challenge, Tom. The younger generation just take it in stride, evidenced by the changing stations in restrooms nowadays. Us old guys gotta stick together! Have a good one, buddy!

Once more you have worked (well and a lot) an improbable if not impossible piece of wood and you have created a beauty. In addition with humor, lightness and good humor, the great serious competence is however always present in the background. The Hilarious Alexa Sequence reminded me in a more than smiling way of my daily life. When the sky looks less blue and when you want to see great art (life too): watch a video by Phil Anderson; infallible recipe! Well done and thank you Phil.

Will that hold together?????????? Looks like termite damage. Most other damage is beetle larvae. Buprestids and Cerambycidaes. The Buprestids are oval and Cerambycides are round. There are a myriad of smaller beetle larval holes.

Hey, to each their own! Just my opinion, I would have made the walls thinner! Phil, that men not changing diapers is wrong. I’ve got two kids, five grandkids, and two great grandsons! Believe me I’ve changed diapers. Not as many as their mother’s have, but diapers, vomit, scrapped knees, and cuts and bruises don’t creep me out!

It's a very nice piece, bug holes and everything. But, if there was some way to close the holes that go stright through the base, maybe it could've worked as a bowl to place on a mantle piece or put your keys by the entrance. But this is just me thinking some practical use. Great work!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
It can go on a mantle or table or wherever, Malachiah. It's just an art piece, not really intended for use. 😃

I am surprised that the wood held up long enough for you to turn it. I really thought the basic integrity of the wood was too compromised. I was wrong. I really like that top edging all the way around too. It's composition and coloring are great. That one little part that was pink(?) surprised me. I kept hoping more would show up. I probably wouldn't have tried, as I said I didn't think the wood itself could stand up to it. Good job Phil. Good result.

I really enjoyed this project. I was biting my nails a bit on that tenon, glad it worked out. What would you think about stabilizing the tenon with a two part epoxy clay? Give it more strength, but then it gets removed so the piece stays with a more natural look. Regardless, loved the video and the final bowl!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
I would do what I have to do. Fortunately I didn't have to do that! 😊

When you go to a friend's house, see that sitting on an end table and pick it up to look it, I just pray that the table underneath does not look similar. If it does, make no quick motions but turn around and make your gentlely and above all lightly to the nearest viable exit (door, window, chimney) thinking only lightweight thoughts.

Hi Phil. By now you may have forgotten me. It's Don Adams from South Australia. My wife & I have moved house & the area we have moved into has the most ridiculous Wi-Fi set up you could ever hope to do without. My son-in-law set up the internet on my mobile phone & yours is the first video I turned to. Will catch up with you as soon as I have Wi-Fi working. Like this piece but will say more on it later. Cheers, Don

If you wanted a bowl that could hold liquids, you could have placed the piece in a vacuum chamber, filled the chamber with epoxy, resin, some kind of room temperature casting fluid (non-toxic of course). Pump the air out (this helps the casting material get into every little bug hole but can rupture the thinner walls as the air is pulled out of the piece), then put it on the lathe.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 2 года назад
Sure, you could do that, Cliff. I'm seldom after a piece that will hold liquid. My turnings are just art work, not necessarily intended to be functional.

Just think, if you find worms in there, you can turn wood and have a snack too. Kind of cool look. Maybe a silver pearl resin. Turn it out. Finish and serve soup. Wa-la I repent, silver pearl wouldn't work maybe a charcoal or a BlackBerry pearl possibly a candy red purple mix.

well,I love it,I think it's the sense of achievement you get when turn turning rotten bug infested pieces like this,to have an end product without it going kaboom and shattering into thousands of little pieces,and the fact that people say that's impossible to turn that and you did,just to prove you can,if your careful and take light cuts without putting to much pressure on the piece while turning it,cheers,Eric.

This is a Beautiful Bowl. I would add some artificial fruit or some artifical rolls in this bowl and put in on a coffee table. You made worms and other bugs very happy by making their former home into a piece of art.💕💕 If you left the center piece in, you could have made a bowl to hold nuts in the shell.

Stupid question from a beginner: do you have to have a bowl gouge to make bowls or does it just make the job easier? Anyone have an extra bowl gouge they’d send an old veteran? Phil Anderson, love your videos and think I’ve seen every single one!!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

No you don't have to have a bowl gouge. A lot of turners use carbide tools for all their turning.

In the beginning I salivated over the heavy ratio of bug holes to wood. But later on, my mind was blown when he brought out the Sand O' Flex and eased all the outside holes for softer edges on those aforementioned bug holes.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
I agree, it really helped the piece, Scott! 😊
