Now 60 years old, since he adopted a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) lifestyle in 2012, Fred has lost 60+ pounds of fat, lowered his cholesterol to 129 mg/dL (from the high 200's) and lowered his blood pressure to 110/70.
He takes absolutely no medications.

Fred, I agree about not pruning cherry tomato plants. Everyone else seems to say "pull off ALL suckers on all tomato plants". LOVE YOUR GARDEN !

I freeze my cherry tomatoes and use them in my soups, chili or with my rice and beans, they’re too mushy to use like in salads or sandwiches.

It can be a good idea to prune cherry tomatoes towards the end of the season to get your last tomatoes to ripen. When you prune the suckers, remember that you can use them as cuttings. I take a couple in in the fall and grow them indoors. This spring I have so far cut 24 cuttings off a Sungold that was a cutting from the garden last year. They're from a foot to two feet and more than half of them already have roots I can see in the 18oz clear plastic cups (with drain holes cut in) that I planted them in. I planted 10 of them 5 days ago and the rest 3 days ago. One cutting showed roots in just two days. Just plant in potting mix and water. Pre-soaking only increases mortality and hormones aren't necessary with tomatoes.

@@i1bike Use a potting mix that contains only peat moss, limestone and perlite. I get nearly 100% survival. When I said not to pre-soak, I was referring to soaking the cutting in rooting solution. You may have to pre-soak the potting mix if it's really dry. Just add a little water to the mix in a bag or a closed container and let it sit 12 hours before using. It wets better if it's slightly damp than if it's totally desiccated.

@@dizzyspinner648 I do not have perlite or moss, but i put limestone pebbles/gravel in flower supstrate and soak it with water and whole pot sits in water plate, never had sucker that survived. Tho, i never holded it in a really dark place, i put it on morning sun and rest of the day in the shade. But hey, its probably my temperature, i live in european africa, also known as south dalmatia. My suckers start when its already 30°+ outside. And tomato probably needs 20-25°

I already have bottle or rooting hormones so I’ll dab, is that powder good for microbial 24 hour air stone bubbled teas? From what I've been able to gather. Pruning/staking the plant just makes it easier to harvest the tomatoes. But at the cost of having fewer tomatoes to harvest. Due to making them more accessible by pruning. Some people prune all the way to the top as it grows. Others prune the bottom and then leave one sucker bellow the first bloom to form a V. And leave the rest to grow on it's own with support. In a greenhouse this helps to utilize available space. But you can grow a bunch on the open ground naturally. Braving the ills of growing directly on the soil. And putting more time in at harvest. But getting more fruits overall. A lot depends on the weather in your area. Mildew loves moisture so pruning will open up the mass to airflow. Reducing the chances of getting PM. And making it easier to spray should it be needed.

If you let your tomato fall over it gets a bigger root structure and can be much more tolerant to temperature and drought. The stem all the way up can grow roots easily. The big risk of this method is blight and pests, but you can prune the leaves that touch the ground. If you have the space I would highly recommend it. Mine have taken over an entire bed with just a few plants. You can also prune the sun leaves to get much more tomatoes to grow. Although they are pretty staggered at harvest.

I found the same thing. I grow a lot of tomatoes every summer. I have about 12 plants usually and I harvest 40 to 60 a day. I think the fruit likes to be behind the leaves to keep the sun off. I do like to keep them off the ground too if possible to stop the insects.

Hi Fred, hope you're doing well! Just circling back around on this with results from my tests on your claim it's better not to prune suckers off your cherry tomato plants. In short, I ended up agreeing with you. But it seems to depend on the variety, and I have one exception: the Sweet 100. This is my favorite, and was all I grew until 2021. I've always pruned my Sweet 100's, and I can prove you get a better yield if you do. This is why I was somewhat skeptical about this. But in 2021, my beloved Sweet 100's started getting harder to find, so I started growing other varieties of cherry tomatoes to find a good backup for my favorite. Mainly Super Sweet 100's, Sun Gold, and Chocolate Cherry. I discovered that the other cherry tomato varieties do *not* like having their suckers pruned. They REFUSE to produce if I don't let their suckers grow wild. Eventually, I just left them alone to grow as they wish, and that's when they really began producing. But I still get the best results from my Sweet 100s if I prune them.

I picked up some sungold seeds in February and on the packet it told me to remove the suckers. Last week I did a big prune of all the suckers. Now I am kicking myself! I wish I saw this video earlier!

I grow them in a glasshouse in the UK and the season is short so only 3 trusses ( maybe 4 if very lucky ) will actually ripen in time. So we prune them and space them quite tightly together ( 14 plants in a 12 x 8 ft glasshouse ) So that we get a good 42 or so trusses to ripen total. That is ALOT of tomatoes in a 12 x 8 ft space and is the best way to get maximum yield in colder climates.

I do a similar thing with cherry tomatoes. One neighbor kept telling me I was doing it wrong and would walk right up ready to start snapping off branches. Another, with a couple of botany degrees kept telling me I was doing it wrong. But when literally everyone in the apartment building and the kids in the building next door were coming out day after day and stuffing themselves, they decided that the "Garden Guy" (my name here in the building) knew what he was doing:)) One day the botany guy (his wife was getting a bowl of tomatoes every day for her eggs) commented that he had no idea one bush could provide soooo much food and that if he ever bought a house, he was going to plant one of these. And I live in Seattle which has lousy tomato weather compared to the midwest where I grew up. July can be gloomy and wet the entire month in a normal year and 80 degree weather makes the locals look for A/C :))

I train my indeterminate tomatoes up a piece of Paracord with top tied to a high pine tree branch. I'm in a condominium so I do what I can. About 20 years ago I took over a large area behind the building and planted may perrenial plants along the street side that disguise my veg garden from people going by.🍅😊🥒🌱

I’ve just purchased a couple of cherry tomato plants ( Black Cherry & Cherry Roma ) and will be planting them in my small suburban back garden into big 32 litre pots and every other video I’ve watched has had people pinching out the side shoots which I instinctively thought was unnecessary. I think I will lean more towards what you shared about that. I could even experiment with light pruning on a few and heavier pruning on a few others and no pruning on a few others also, compare the results. Jesus is Lord - God bless

I am so happy to find a whole food plant based gardner! We have been plant based for 14 years. I only have a small garden for the two of us, but as a beginner learning different tips has really helped me out. We live in a 55+ community that doesn't allow us to plant veggies, but I have a large screened in patio that gets full sun all day and I have turned it into my garden using vertical towers and raised beds.

I agree with not pruning cherry tomatoes. Too many people out there preaching to prune, I get a much higher yield by letting the plant grow untouched.

As you had mentioned, it seems to be common, and almost accepted, that the practice of pruning cherry tomatoes is an absolute must in garden circles. not really an expert, but for example Curtis from urban farmer said that pruning reduce yield per plant but increase yield by more intensive planting he was growing vertical tomatoes tightly space in the greenhouse and as he always said, it was about context more plants per area, less yield per plant bc of pruning, but more yield per area bc of more air and light and less diseases growing a couple of tomatoes in your garden, pruning them is a waste

Absolutely prune your cherry tomatoes. I prune all my cherries about 18" high taking all the growth off from the first fruit cluster to the ground. Then at 3 ft take off all suckers. After that let them go but continue pruning small suckers until it reaches 6 ft.

Sweet Millions, I probably have a million! I may have to buy a deep freezer. So don't worry if you chopped the plant down, you will probably still get a couple hundred from each plant.

Am grateful Farmer Fred for you effort in sharing your food growing experiences/wisdom with the public. Farmers are the most valuable artisans in a culture; a godly pursuit. Love your video. And I wholly agree sungold cherry tomatoes are the most tasty of them all, as I prefer sweet tomato taste over acidic taste. I also use the early girl medium sized tomato as my standard choice as they are yummy and early. These two types are my choice. I live in the desert of Albuquerque and grow in a tiny yard in containers with cattle fence cage supports.

I'm going to try those sungold variety . Candyland red are about half the size of cherry tomatoes and go great in pasta salad and when you bite into them they pop. Indigo rose is pretty cool looking cherry type that's dark purple almost black . Those are my 2 favorite cherry variety . Thanks Fred, outstanding garden you have there.

I had to prune all of mine, including the cherry tomatoes. We have serious fungi issues with our veggies and if I don't get as many stems away from the ground as possible, we lose them.

I usually prune the heck out of tomatoes because they’re just crazy otherwise. I’ve only trimmed bottom branches at the base right now. I will try to NOT prune the cherry tomatoes. I have sun gold to put in yet. Oh my. This is going to be interesting to see if I can conform. 🤣

I am doing a comparison this year between sunsugar and sungolds to see which one I like best 😃 I have determinants and lots of in determinants and have wondered about pruning! Oh! Thank you for this comment. I have a sungold in a container and I've been pruning the shooters off. Now my plant is kind of leggy and now I understand why. I will also stop pruning them off and see what happens. Are suckers and shooters the same thing? I guess I'll find out.

I like the grow and twist method it has worked really well for my mystery tomato plant that sprung up last summer just before fall, so I brought it indoors and put it in a 35 gallon tote and its huge it ended up having 3 leaders and I had them all twisted and I rooted off a bunch of clones from the suckers that gave me a big jump on this year's current season plus I had tomatoes growing over winter indoors it was really nice

I'm Aussie. But I grew up in a River area, where we had an influx of Ethnic influence (from when they migrated way back when). GEE WHIZ, the old Ethnic men knew exactly how hard, rough, gentle, etc., they could be with all kinds of different plants! I was working for "blockie", as we called them, and got to yarning about his back yard vege patch. (I worked on his grape vines, he grew grapes for the wineries.) He told me this year's ago. Never cut back your cherry tomatoes - otherwise they'll spend all their energy trying to grow somewhere, instead of producing fruit! He said cherry toms weren't like their big lookalikes. They needed to be pruned, to be steong enough to hold their fruit. Cherrys were like grape vines, the more you let them naturally do their thing (provided you got a "natural plant" he used to say - non determinate is what he meant, haha), the more they naturally wanted to produce fruit every step of the way. He was right, I proved it in my own garden that next season! Thank you for trying to tell more people! I'm so glad more people are finding out! Bless! 😍❤😍

In the UK, the growing season is rather short. Pruning is essential otherwise you will end up with loads of green tomatoes when the season ends.

This video isn't recent so I don't know if you will see this comment but I'll take a chance.... I see videos that say to prune to get bigger yeilds and now I stumbled on this video that says NOT to prune to get bigger yeilds. As a beginner in vege gardening, I am supper confused now.

Hi Valerie, I personally like using the heavy duty tomato cages rather than stakes, they may cost a little bit more but they are a lot easier to use, of course if you are growing indeterminate type cherry tomatoes you will have to provide much higher trellis support for them. I only use tomato cages on my determinant or a bush type tomato plants.

@@PlantSmartLivingNOW Farmer Fred, I am growing indeterminate cherry tomatoes, they are growing very nicely, green fruits have set, some are turning red and they are growing a the top room, however I had have a few accidents, some of the branches have broken off and I have put them in water to get roots. My first go around with growing cherry tomatoes I had a "Husky Cherry Tomato" plant down here in South carolina and I had at least twenty tomatoes at a time growing and replacing the ones I harvested. The plant went from 6 inches to over 4ft and was thriving until the cold snap hit and killed it. I had to replace it last month but looking forward to it producing tomatoes every week once it starts to bear.

I am in zone 9 (hot and dry climate perfect for tomatoes) and I have to prune my cherry tomatos otherwise they will become crazy wild vines and huge headaches. Even just one tomato plant has the capacity to take over the whole space. Love your garden! We don’t have enough humidity to be this green in our area.

I live in SE N. Car and train them up 10 foot bamboo poles. I prune them about four feet up and then let them grow suckers. Here in the south if I don,t get them off the ground before letting them go, disease will take the plants every time. This gives me more tomatoes than we can eat off four plants.

😬👀😯.. I had to prune my tomatoes because do to my neglect they got too tall and tipped over before I could get my stakes in the mail which I should have ordered ahead of time anyways so thats my fault.. But anyways my plants are happy and filled right back in and seem to be producing extremely well. It was either give them a good prune or sacrifice the plants to blight. I'm harvesting literally everyday at this point so my particular cherry tomatoes don't mind pruning and seem to thrive from it. Last year I did not prune them just to see what they would do in their most natural untouched state and they did not thrive like this year same tomatoes too.. Like now I'm producing more in a week than I did in an entire season I might have to give some of them away if I can't keep up soon. I also have alot of flowers around my yard so like every pollinator in my area seems to like congregating in my yard and throw a party my house is the party house for wildlife at this point. 🤣🤣 Plenty of food and peace and quiet.

I prune my cherry tomatoes to limit them to 4 main stems. I still can pick over 100 tomatoes a day. I'll just keep up my pruning, thank you.

I'm in Bethlehem, Pa. you are about an hour south of me. I'm planting my first garden this year. I have a small patch of land around my garage as I'm learning how to grow some tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplant. I wish I could do more and hopefully next year I will I have to show my husband that I can and god willing next year he will join me. So far he keeps telling me that I'm killing the plants He is a cup half empty type of person. I love your garden it looks organized wish is important as my OCD goes crazy when thing looks disorganized. Also, I love your flowers. I to decide to grow some flower in front of my house. Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience. I cannot help but wonder how you keep the deer out of your garden? I would love to have a fence-less garden aesthetically but they decimate too many plants. I originally started by planting enough for everyone but even with three dogs I cant keep them away. The deer like the tender stuff.

I'm a new sub and I liked your video. This was a very nice video with all those birds singing. I think this is good advice not to prune smaller cherry tomato plants. It seams like you almost always get tons of tomatoes off the plants. I guess if the plant is not doing as well due to weather or disease that is a different issue. But over all great advice. I really LOVE the end of your video showing everything growing there. It really was very neat to see everything. Everything looks like it was doing good too. :) Thanks for sharing :)

Well it would have been nice to know that before I pruned mine last week 😂 It's ok there's lots of the vine ready to ripen. I can't tell you how delicious they are in the lettuce from my garden. It's my first one, it's small & I've been really happy w it. It's been a cool August in Minnesota so my spinach died, but it was neat while it lasted.❤

I am not pruning my super sweet 100 cherry tomatoes . Gosh are they getting tall in my 5 gal. buckets. I apply neem oil to the plant to keep bugs off. I plan to use MG liquid tomato fertilizer as needed.

Thanks Fred. Gardening is a trial and error process. I dont get alot of sunlight in my backyard, so with tomatoes in containers i can move them around to maximize sunlight, or move them inside if it gets too cool. Super satisfying to watch my plants grow and harvest them.

I prune my cherries and stake them too. Superior production on Sungold and Sakura's. I do allow two to three stems per plant, and stake each stem also, much like you are. I am going to lift and lower the strings. You are absolutely right on Sungold Flavor!

Hello and thank you for this fabulous video. I love Sungold tomatoes, I used to live on Long Island and got them at the farmstands. Now I live in FL and cannot find them, so in May I was on vaca in LI and I brought a Sungold plant home. It's growing fast and I have some green tomatoes on the bottom. I've been pinching off the shooters but it looks a little leggy so I came here looking for some info. I will stop pinching them off now and see what happens. I'm not sure if suckers an shooters are the same thing, I'll go do some more reseatch now. Thanks again!
