Do you have a lawn full of CLOVER and CREEPING CHARLIE?
Watch This.
In this video, we'll explore the incredible benefits of Sublime Herbicide, a brand new herbicide that reigns supreme when it comes to tackling notorious creeping type weeds including: clover, creeping charlie, wild violet, chickweed, ground ivy and oxalis.
Sublime contains 3 herbicides: Triclopyr, Dicamba and Mesotrione.
✦ What is Triclopyr? ✦
Triclopyr is a selective herbicide renowned for its efficiency in controlling creeping and woody broadleaf weeds, including the persistent nuisances known as clover and creeping charlie. It works by disrupting the growth and development of these invasive weeds, providing a reliable and long-lasting solution to restore the beauty and health of your lawn.
✦ What is Dicamba? ✦
Dicamba herbicide is a potent and widely used tool in the battle against stubborn weeds. Known for its effectiveness against broadleaf plants, dicamba targets weeds such as dandelions, pigweed, and thistles. With its systemic action, dicamba is absorbed by the plant and moves throughout its tissues, delivering a knockout punch to even the most resilient weeds. Its versatility and compatibility with turfgrasses make dicamba a go-to solution for weed control, ensuring that fields and landscapes remain pristine and productive.
✦ What is Mesotrione? ✦
With its unique mode of action, mesotrione effectively targets and eliminates a wide range of broadleaf and grassy weeds, making it an invaluable tool. What sets mesotrione apart is its ability to inhibit the vital photosynthetic process in plants (which causes the notorious bleaching effect), leading to a rapid and reliable control of weeds. Its selectivity allows for safe application on a variety of grasses aside from warm season grasses, ensuring that desirable plants are unharmed while unwanted weeds are swiftly eradicated. It is also one of the only herbicides that can be used while seeding new grass.
By combining all 3 of these herbicides, it leads to an extremely potent combo that smokes clover, creeping charlie, wild violet, ground ivy, chickweed and oxalis.

Glad I stumbled across this as I’m noticing clover in multiple spots over the past week. Just ordered a gallon of sublime as I’m a huge fan of tenacity. I couldn’t find the quarts as they seem to be sold out just about everywhere. Quarts ranged from 60-70 bucks so I think I did pretty good with a gallon for $140. Looking forward to it arriving. Thanks George! Because of your videos, I found the courage to quit my lawn service and go DIY. Last year, I used Scotts 4 step (I know, I saw your other video) and I spot treated with tenacity and speed zone as needed. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments, and my lawn has never looked better. I used a big-name lawn service and was never impressed. What sent me over the edge was the runner of spurge that was about a foot wide and ran the entire width of my house. Somehow, my service person never saw or treated it, because I had it the entire year. What’s amazing is that doing it myself is WAY cheaper and doesn’t take much time. I appreciate the information that you share with us. I’m looking forward to having a beautiful lawn for many years to come. By the way, I have a Kentucky blue grass lawn, and I live in Iowa.

I don’t think that I can tell you. It was purchased as sod 17 years ago when we bought our new house. From what I remember, it was purchased from a sod farm in Minnesota. I reseed every year or so with seed from Earle May. I’m going to have to dig out the sprinklers soon because it’s been so darn hot here lately. Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I always look forward to seeing your videos.

I am absolutely loving your channel! I am a friendly neighbor to the north, up here near Milwaukee. Yes we are currently in a small drought which makes using any herbicide harder, but I'm trying to decide between a couple of your methods. I currently have white clover, some ground ivy in spots, some other broadleaf and the occasional poa. Would I be better off using this method with the Sublime (or the Ortho you mentioned), or, using the Ortho Weed B Gone and adding ammonium sulfate as you mentioned in a previous video? I plan on fertilizing first with lawn food (as mentioned in a previous video), then spot treating. Just not sure which would be best. I have a KBG lawn mostly (was hydroseeded almost 2 years ago) with fescue and rye in my front yard. That's a lot, but thank you for all you do and your knowledge. Keep it up!

I think the reason that they don't combine mesotrione in standard 3-ways of 2,4-D and dicamba is that those work by making the plant grow out of control and basically make them implode on a cellular level. That's why you're supposed to apply them at temps when the weeds will be growing and not yet dormant, and why you add fertilizer to them to make them more effective. Mesotrione blocks photosynthesis, which is counterproductive to the mechanism that allows 3 ways to work.
@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare Год назад
interesting theory, makes sense
@TofuInc
@TofuInc Год назад
It's a pretty awesome combo. Triclopyr alone provides excellent control over broad leaf weeds, better than 2,4-d and is much safer as well. Mesotrione is a pretty poor herbicide on it's own but I'm glad to see manufactures adding it into these combo products.

So far, very effective on clover and broadleaf (dandelions). Somewhat effective on the wild violet which I got this for. I applied it and it rained the next day. After a week, some of the violets showed distress but it rained the day after application. I re-applied a week later and again it rained the next day. I don't see any negative impact on the grass. How long does it have to stay on the violet to have full impact? It seems like it rains every 2-3 days of late. The next application I plan on doing the entire lawn and not just the test area.

I use Gordon's Trimec when it's available at my box store, probably a bit expensive for the strength but has worked on clover, creeping chuck @ 4oz per 1 gal for 1000sq.. I mist it but that's for coverage of over ran chuck, otherwise spot spray .. works on most grasses but you have to be more cautious on St. Augustine grass better as a spot spray.

Based on your channel from last year, I now have all of your favorites! 2 weeks ago I wanted to kills 4 little patches of clover in a neighbor's yard. Threw a splash of SpdZone in a spray bottle and thought why not some Tenacity too? I did and within a week, clover was all but gone. Very little if any bleaching. I mixed up a batch of Tenacity with MSO and sprayed just patches of Poa Annua (Oregon) since label says not to (must kill it, Right?) Patches turned very white, may have killed it or it just died back due to heat wave. Will do it again in spring. Great channel by the way.

I broadcast clover seeds all over my lawn years ago. Now, we have beautiful patches of white clover, grass, and dandelions too. It’s a nice ecosystem which also helps bees. No herbicides or pesticides needed. The lawn clippings are not taken away, but allowed to just fall back onto the lawn, thereby recycling the nutrients. Lot of earthworms everywhere too. Moral of the story: don’t use herbicides like this video is telling you to. 🙂

I actually like clover and normally leave them alone, but in my yard Creeping Charlie often intermingle with clover. Last year I tried Tenacity and it did nothing to the Creeping Charlie, even after 2 applications spaced 2 weeks apart, though killed the clover. Then I read Purdue University's publication "Turfgrass Weed Control" and they recommend Triclopyr for Creeping Charlie so I applied that after another week. That started to take effect after about 10 days. That gave me courage to try using Triclopyr on more spots in my yard that have a lot of Creeping Charlie this year. But one dosage didn't seem to do anything to them while killing off the clovers that were with them. Right now I'm contemplating whether another dosage of Tripoclyr is needed or do a dosage of Tenacity since last year it took 2 dosage of Tenacity and one of Triclopyr to work.

When I apply herbicides, I have found that testing the mixture pH is necessary in my area because municipal water pH is high, and high pH mixtures are typically less effective overall. To test, I have cheap pool pH test strips that I use, and if my pH is too high, I use a product called Wildfire, made by Grower's Source, LLC, that will lower pH and act as a surfactant. Herbicide mixtures should run between a 5 - 6.5 pH for best performance, confirm with product labeling as these values can vary.

I’m curious, starting at 6:25 you said that this can’t be applied to warm season grasses, but on the USE LABEL it specifically gives instructions for use on Zoysia, St. Augustine and Centipedegrass. Like most herbicides I’ve used, temperatures need to be under 90 degrees to apply. It can be used on Bermudagrass, but ONLY while dormant, to kill winter weeds. Likewise, in the USE LABEL, not the outside sticker, it lists possible discoloration for Zoysia, St. Augustine, Centipede, Fine Fescue, Bahia and Seashore Paspalum grasses. Is this what you refer to as “bleaching?” I am currently using the Celsius WG individual packets, for spot treatments of clover, etc. It seems to work really well. I have Zoysia grass.

Thanks this was so helpful! One question: Would you apply this to the whole lawn as a "preventive" or only on the spots that have weeds? Does that make sense? Like, would you blanket the lawn with it (just in case there were weeds that were "hiding" and not yet fulling showing themselves) or do you just spray the weeds and if more weeds come up in areas that didn't have weeds, (when you sprayed) would you go back and spray them? Sorry that was so long-winded!

Looks like he spot-treated. This is extremely powerful stuff. Applying it all over just in case there might be a hidden weed here and there does not seem to be a good idea. (Edited to add: if you are overrun with weeds, then a broader application would make sense but please remember this is some very, very toxic chemistry. Use sparingly, please!)

Did you add ammonium sulfate to the mix ? Your lawn is looking mint at 1” with a rotary George. I’ve been mowing at a half inch with a Swardman for the past few years and think I’m going to switch to the Toro 60V Super Recycler at 1”. I just want to simplify the mow and I’ll be able to get out there early with the 60V, the Swardman is loud and the maintenance is getting out of hand. Keep up the great work.

Hey Ron 👋 good to see you my old friend! It’s been a while! And thank you 🙏 I agree! Looks really good with the rotary. Do you already own the toro 60v? If not I would consider the Milwaukee, it delivers a near identical cut to a reel (hard to believe I know lol) I have both and the Milwaukee smokes the toro in every category

I bought a gallon because I have an ASSLOAD of clover. I roped off an area and sprayed it 3 days ago. I'll let you know how it works here in central PA. Update I sprayed my roped-off section a week ago and the clover is turning all brown and the broad leaf weeds are turning a strange willty yellow. I was so excited about testing this that I forgot to add the surfactant. It seems to be working though. I'll update you later.

The only post emergent I have found that may work is Acclaim. Temps are too high in my area now. Have you used Acclaim before? Any suggestions on a post emergent for Johnson grass? Your videos are so helpful and I really appreciate your honesty and approach. I finally got my hands on a quart of Sublime. I've read the application label and I have to say I feel like an idiot. I cannot find the application rate broken down per gallon. Everyone else seems to have this figured out. I have a 4 gallon backpack sprayer that I figured I could just multiply by 4 and come up with the right amount. Does anyone know the 1 gallon application rate for tall fescue? Sublime's website doesn't seem to have this published.
@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare 11 месяцев назад
no worries my friend! sublime is marketing to mostly pros so no worries about not understanding the label as it can def be confusing. if you look on the label there is an application rate listed for spot spraying of 0.75oz per gallon per 1k sqft and this is the rate we used. so multiple that by 4 and your good to go

I agree that Speedzone is not great for eliminating clover BUT when adding ammonium sulfate, that you mentioned in a previous video, it supercharged Speedzone. The clover wilted in one day. This never happened before. The tall fescue appears to be unaffected so far.
@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare Год назад
great to hear rick! pardon me as i misspoke when i addressed speedzone, i meant to say it struggles to control creeping charlie and wild violet, not clover and creeping charlie. Speedzone can def be effective at controling clover in the right conditions
@Rick-se5qm
@Rick-se5qm Год назад
@@PrincessCutLawnCare My lawn is shaded by trees, for up to 50% of the day. A Speedzone treatment will discolor the clover for about two weeks and then it will revive itself. With ammonium sulfate added the clover is toast in one or two days.

I saw your reply to another post where you stated do not apply when temperatures are above 80F to 85F - that was my first question so already answered. My second question: if the plan includes seeding the lawn, how much in advance of applying this product should seeding be done? And how soon after applying this product should seeding be delayed? Those questions basically hit on pre-emergent and post-emergent properties of the product.
@PrincessCutLawnCare

Hi Steve, as per the label, you can apply anytime before or during seeding (I know.. I was surprised too)

I’m so glad you mentioned you’re from Chicago. I’m from Milwaukee so that means we have the same climate zone 😅. I’m having a MAJOR Poa Annua and crabgrass infestation problem in my backyard. So far I’ve sprayed with with Tenacity and weed be gone and it looks like the only thing taking a hit and dying is my actual grass. I sprayed 5 days ago so still not at the week mark. Any recommendations? When can or should I mow? When should I water (we’re also experiencing a drought in Milwaukee 😭)? Should I thatch take? (I also have a LOT of dead thatch layer). This is going on our second summer in our new home and I’m trying to make my backyard look as nice as my front but I’m getting very discouraged with it. I just want a nice lawn for my kiddos to be able to play barefoot in. Any help is greatly appreciated brother.
@PrincessCutLawnCare
@PrincessCutLawnCare Год назад
hey what up my northern neighbor! we are in a drought as well, its important not to apply herbicides in these weather conditions unless you are fully irrigating and even then make sure you apply in the evening. If you havent been watering i would highly suggest you start asap as those weed killers can easily burn your lawn in these temps.
@telecasterman18
@telecasterman18 Год назад
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Alright! I’ll get on that watering. I burned my front yard last year and had to totally reseed it. That’s why it’s so beautiful this year 😂. I’m wondering if my backyard damage is beyond repairable. I mean it’s not brown but it has the early stages of yellowing/dormancy to it. My backyard is east facing so it gets TONS of direct sunlight which already makes for a hard to manage lawn. Kinda sad looking. Lololol. Wish me luck. Thanks for the input as well! Appreciate it!

@@PrincessCutLawnCare you're right, Sublimes promo video says it will only bleach some targeted weeds and grasses that aren't labelled as desireable turf grasses, including annual grasses like crabgrass and goose grass, and perennial grasses like bentgrass and nimblewell. @TheLawnLover
@TheLawnLover Год назад
@@PrincessCutLawnCare It did bleach the weeds and targeted grassy weeds, but I also had some bleached tips on my fescue when applying it at the label rate too. Sometimes adding iron into the mixture will help prevent chlorosis. Chlorosis can happen after applying herbicides because it either disrupts photosynthesis, or the chemical contains ingredients that act like a salt/sodium. If it is occurring at the tip of grass blades, I'd theorize it was due to the amine salts in the Sublime product. How to avoid: mix iron into your mixture or use a more course spray tip that produces larger water droplets.

I've had no issue using 2,4D on clover. Just mix a batch with surfactant and kills pretty quick. Just don't use the store stuff at low concentrations. Get a concentrated bottle of it and mix it right.

Well anyways, I'm local near Naperville, would you still mow on days like today or yesterday (High 80's, low 90's)? And if so, what time would you do it? When it gets shady & cooler around 6 or 7pm? Or in the morning before you water? Any advice is much appreciated! 👍
