Kill Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Clover in 5 Easy Steps. Kill Bindweed, Morning Glory and more.
Today we go over the Pest and Lawn Ginja's 5 Steps to killing crabgrass and other annual grass weeds.
Step 1. Identify your grass type
Step 2. Identify the weed
Step 3. Pick the right herbicide for your grass type
Step 4. Proper Handling and Mixing of the herbicide
Step 5. How to properly apply the herbicide
If you're looking for a good weed killer for grass or your lawn I have listed weed killer that will kill the weeds and not your grass.
Kill Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Clover in 5 Easy Steps. Oxalis, morning glory and Crabgrass Killer.
Follow my 5 steps and you'll be well on your way to successfully killing crabgrass. Kill Crabgrass and Weeds in 5 Easy Steps. How to kill crabgrass in Bermuda, st. augustine, Kentucky Bluegrass and others.
Kill Crabgrass, Dallisgrass, Clover in 5 Easy Steps. Oxalis, morning glory and Crabgrass Killer.
The three herbicides we discuss today are Tenacity / Meso 4sc, Quinclorac 1.5L / Drive xlr8, and celcius wg. Each one of these herbicides targets crabgrass and other annual grass. They each have there pro's and cons. It's important to know that you can't spray all herbicides equally to all different species of grass. Some species are susceptible to the herbicides and you run the risk of killing your lawn.
If you want to spot spray weeds like a pro and kill crabgrass and not your lawn watch and follow my 5 easy steps to killing crabgrass and other weeds in your lawn.

@@imperfectdadstuff From what I have watched from Ginja and others, and heard on radio: If you are in the "cool states", crabgrass is an annual and if you keep it from seeding , and neighbors seeds from blowing in, I would just let it die over the Winter and be sure to Pre-emerge the following Spring. Great content. Not to many guys will talk about using multiple herbicides at the same time. They just talk about individual ones not which ones to combine. What about mixing your non ionic surfactant and seed oil together. Does that make it “hot” as some guys like to say. Thanks and keep it up
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 лет назад
Great question. The truth is I've only theorized about this and haven't done any testing. I've read articles like this one that claim there's no issue. Check his #2 section. techlinenews.com/herbicides/adjuvants2014 I use a product called duo stick when we mix for our large tanks and it's an incredible product. but its an mso mixed with a organosilicone based surfactant. It breaks humates down faster than anything else I've tried. In about 30 to 45 seconds it'll break the 90% humic acid down into a slurry which is important to get it to mix with water.

Hey Ginja, very informative video. What do you recommend for a yard that is about 2 acres in Size? recently purchased a new place in north virginia that has all sorts of crabgrass, clover, and all sorts of stuff. (working on getting to a kentucky bluegrass) Because of the size I'm thinking big box store granular versus a 2 gallon sprayer. I have a pull behind spreader already. Second question, how can I increase success of overseeding such a large area with zero automated sprinkler system? Good work and will buy through your links.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 года назад
great questions. the granular is commonly more expensive. There are some awesome boom sprayers that attach to four wheelers that would allow you to spray instead of granulate. however you can find some mesotrione granular searching on the web and it will do a good job on the crabgrass and annual grasses.

the herbicides don't kill the micro biology as the stigma says. what will kill the micro biology is what people recommend using a combination of baking soda and vinegar. its super acidic. the best way to do it the organic way is to use a weed pulling device or hand pick the weeds. I get the desire to use the organic approach and highly applaud your efforts. Have a great day.

For crabgrass, do I used as pre emergent right now like quinclorox? And when I used tenacity? Kentucky grass over a pure sand soil with a 4-6" of earth bought at the store over a period of 32 years. First it was a 4-6" of top soil before installing grass over it.

Are there any more economical options for Centipede + Zoysia? I have zoysia on one side and centipede on another and always run into the problem where id need to tackle both separately. A lot of lawns in the neighborhood are just weed patches and im fighting battles on all fronts to keep the weeds at bay. Lespedeza, crab grass, nutsedge, bunching tall fescue, some clover but thats not bad

Thanks for info - I sprayed XLR8 + MSO + blue dye 2 days ago in STatesville NC - have had no rain in 2-3 weeks - have lawn mixture of bermuda and tall fescue but due to neglect the crab grass has taken over - have right at 40,000 sq ft, used a 25 gal pull behind sprayer - in 2 days the majority of the crabgrass is very brown and quickly dying. It took 50 gals or 2 tanks. The XLR8 killing of the crabgrass is a post emergent process and am also look for some pre-emergent benefit to "get after" the poanna in Jan-Feb. So here is a strong positive recommendation on XLR8 for killing crabgrass - just praying for rain to proceed on with aeration and seeding. Plan on using XLR8 as a pre-emergent for crabgrass in Feb and we will see if it is as effective.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 лет назад
Although quinclorac has some pre emergents properties you'll be better off using prodiamine or dithiopyr
@bufordarning2305
@bufordarning2305 5 лет назад
additional info - my local farm store had the XLR8 but getting the MSO was harder so plan ahead. XLR8 says do not use if above 85 degrees - the lady at the farm store called BASF rep for clarification because along with the drought it has been unusually hot. They said use it early AM and it should dry in 30 mins or so (wind, sun etc all diff factors) but as long as it was dry by the time temps hit 88-90 there would be no problem so good on that front. Also asked is applying to a heave dew in early AM and rep said no problem - and from my visual perspective it may have even helped - you could literally see it covering more and more of each leaf as it sat there.

Hey great video, thanks you! I live in Michigan I have a mix of bluegrass, red fescue and perennial rye. I have been using quinlorac for a couple of years and goes a long way suppressing crabgrass. I was out of methylated oil today and wanted to suppress some weeds on a newly seeded area (1 month old) , I used Southern A G surfactant, added twice as required. Hopefully it will do the trick. What do you think? Also I haven't had a good success with quinclorac in killing dandelions or goose grass... I did mix in 2,4d from S. A G and worked well earlier this summer. You spoke of tenacity, would you recommend using that with quinclorac, 2,4d? I have a 20k ft2 area I want to take care of. Preferably using my 15 gallon mower mounted sprayer. What do you recommend? I appreciate your wisdom, great energy in your videos!
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 3 года назад
mso is very acidic and that's why it works for killing grass type weeds like crabgrass, foxtail etc.. for all other types of common weeds like dandelions a regular surfact, even dish soap, works great. I believe goose grass is on the label with quinclorac but i could be wrong. people commonly misdiagnose goosegrass for something else and that's why it doesn't die. I prefer the quinclorac/mso/t-zone combo to the tenacity shot. tenacity is much safer to use due to it being a synthetic plant base, but that's just my opinion. the quinclorac combo will be much cheaper than tenacity and it will do a great job.

Hi Ginja, I just finished applying a second application of Tenacity approximately three weeks after the first application. Some of the areas had minimal grass. In those areas there are large Goosegrass weeds standing tall and alone but there are many in a specific area. What will become of the Goosegrass after they die? Do I have to physically remove them or do they disappear on their own? When I reseed in a couple of weeks I would hate for the Goosegrass to remain prominent throughout the winter and into the spring.

This is an excellent video. I have several of these products for my warm season grass specifically Celsius and Quinclorac. I actually have achieved great just using weed b gon from the big box store on many of the listed weeds. I would also suggest trying to stay ahead of weeds by applying a pre emergent twice a year at the label rates. It will be strange having a lot of weed control products that you actually don't need because on the rare occasion I see a weed I just pull it out. But great information in here Ginja. Thank you!

Hi Ethan! Those can be frustrating weeds for sure. I would focus on pre emergent apps twice a year at the high rate and alternate between dithiopyr and prodiamine. The rest is spraying them as you go. I still recommend using speedzone or t-zone for those weeds. I would spray weed killer every 6 to 8 weeks for the next 2 seasons.

@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 лет назад
You can use just about any sprayer you'd like. The difference is the bigger the yard the more water and product. I use a backpack sprayer only because I do this on a daily as my job. so if you had a 3000 sq. ft area you'll need 6 gallons water, 3tsp meso 4sc and 9tsp non ionic surfactant. just as an example. If you had a 2 gallon sprayer you would need to refill a few times. I prefer to use some of my other devices because it saves me time. I can do the same 3000 sq ft job in 3 minutes as opposed to 9 minutes.

I am so thankful for all the Ginja videos posted out here, especially this one. I used a combination of Tenacity and Speedzone, along with some Hi-Yield Super Sticker just like in the video. Used it on my northern lawn (fescue and rye grass). Did wonders for clover, Oxalis, and dandelion. I am a newbie, and will share some additional tips: I would highly recommend some kind of marker dye to ensure you can keep track of where you are going and where you've been. Wear old pants/shoes if you use marker dye! Your pants/shoes will likely get the dye on them. Wash those pants separately in a laundry sink or even your bathtub or bathroom sink to get as much dye out as possible, ... then you can toss them in your regular laundry without dye transfer to your other clothes. Be patient and wait for a day that's not windy when you won't have rain for at least a few hours after applying. Even a slight breeze will ruin your coverage - I tried it with a slight breeze and gave up after only a few seconds. I don't think I've ever paid so much attention to the wind in the weather forecast! :) But I finally found the perfect morning for spraying with no wind, no dew on the leaves, and no rain that day. Lastly, it's really important to watch other Ginja videos, ... especially when it comes to learning about the difference between bunching tall fescue and crabgrass (are you frustrated with trying to kill your "crabgrass?", ... learn why!). The great thing is I have enough leftover product for next year - and they will keep for a year or two shelf life easily. And it's all done at a fraction of the cost of a lawn service! Thank you for the great videos Lawn Ginja!
