Gidday Alistair, really enjoy watching your activities down in Canterbury. We are sheep and beef farming near Taumarunui. I hope you don't mind me commenting on your farming practices, but it looked like you were drenching the lambs and putting them straight onto the new grass paddocks? From a drench resistance point of view it is better to either put them onto old pasture for a week or so after drenching and then onto the new grass, or to drench after they have been on the new grass for a week or so. The aim is to avoid any worms that might have survived the drench sheding eggs onto clean pasture where the only worms they will get to breed with are others that have survived a drench. Hope that makes sense? Happy New Year! Ross

It all depends on the feed they are eating, at that time of year with out any roughage or fiber in the grass their dung can become sloppy.

I’d like to ask a question if that’s possible please do you dip your sheep but they do in the UK this fly straight I don’t particularly understand it I know rabbits can die of it and I know my neighbours bunny rabbits a couple of them I’ve dyed a fly strike is it because they’re overheating like getting hot or is it just because of the pesky fucking Fly laying their eggs that’s where a maggot comes from my pissing nasty horrible fucking things
@kiwifarmernz
@kiwifarmernz 2 года назад
Yep we do dip our sheep but this year in Canterbury has been really bad, If the animal dies with flystrike it is usually because of septicemia or blood poisoning. I really hate flys as well.

@gennabird107

Probably the same reason sheep don't get painkillers when giving birth. Or sunscreen in the sun. Or a paracetamol for a headache, a bandaid for a scratch or a wheelchair when they hurt a leg. 🤷🏽‍♀️

@@gennabird107 I used to bring badly struck sheep into the shed to recover so that the sun did’t add to the discomfort by burning the already raw skin. Our vet agreed. Otherwise I agree with your comment. We rarely got strike using a timely ovicidal spray and crutching.
