ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RU-vid and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

Most people's jobs don't require them to spend a lot of cash upfront and put in a ton of work without a guaranteed amount in compensation. You've got nerves of steel compared to most of the folks I know. I have so much respect for all your and Lizzie's hard work. The boys are growing so fast!

Cammy , you shouldn’t have to disclose any of your personal financial information with anyone in the world because it’s your business. Don’t ever feel bad and please Do Not Ever let anyone bully you or make you feel like you have to apologize for not talking about it . If you want to throw out rough numbers of what things run that would be enough if it pertains to what you’re trying to put out there info wise . It’s totally ok to keep a lot of things private ❤️. People will still flock to you and Love you just as much. Thanks for being you.

It appears that if you land near the bottom of the list most of people are gone and your lambs will make less. Always great to see the family ! We love being a part of the family. It’s always nice to see the boys and watch them grow and change.

Not always ,sometimes a dealer just needs another pen of sheep to fill a lorry or a farmer who has made a long journey to market just decides to pay over budget rather than waste another day away from the farm having to travel to another sale ,this has certainly happened to me in the past but i have also experienced a poor trade at sale end

sometimes part of the money making is to wait till the end of the auction when everyone else has purchased, you job is to get the best price so you day pay was to extra 10 pounds per head you got 1,480 pounds to sit till the end of the auction I think is worth it

I enjoyed the auction and the explanations, and watching you and Lizzie decide together, but my favorite part was when you "took over the driving", the banter and getting the lambs out in the darkness! Long days and hard work all the time! But you stay upbeat and fun, wonderful to see.

"It's all a risk." That's farming worldwide, Cammie. I remember one year we had the best-ever crop of wheat - and we got hail that absolutely flattened it to the point nothing could be saved the night before we were due to harvest it. Farming's a career where you must be willing to gamble against nature almost every single day.

One little comment from an old lady: I so respected your rule from the beginning about no swearing, and proud of you for speaking up about it even with other farmers. Cammy, thank you for being so transparent. I have a handful of pedigree Shetland sheep that are basically pets, but I dream of someday making a go of it, and your videos have taught me a lot. It is also true of farmers in Wales. They do not want to disclose what they pay for X Y and Z. Even down to how many sheep do you own. I have heard them say that you dont ask someone how much is in their bank account so dont ask how many sheep do we have.

Me and my ex went to a farmers auction once just as a day out. It was really fascinating and quite exciting. We had no clue what was going on so had to figure it out as the day went on. When we split she went and bought some sheep. I now have no way of doing so. Maybe when I retire, or if I win the lottery some time soon...

Yeah for a store lamb sale it is. breeding sales would be busier. There are several 'dealers' in the crowd who will be buying over 1000 lambs and will have orders from farmers.

Strong stores are always a numbers game there's so little to be made per lamb. Buying the smaller ones to sell on a rising trade later in the year gives you a better chance of a worthwhile return if you have the winter feed. Or a get out at a small profit if you're unable to get them all the way to fat.

Good looking sheep, lets hope that they grow into some profit after all the costs. Talking of costs - what please is the value to you per 10 sheep to have them already double vaccinated and treated with Click as was the case of the first batch through the sale ring? Would you also worm them now you have them home and its cost, if necessary?

So it would be about £3 head to have that done. Worming isn't expensive. These lambs were from people I knew so was happy to put them away to grass without quarantine although you should always quarantine.

I would look at the quality More than the weight .. If they are light So be it ......u can gain weight But you can't change the quality.

Love the market videos I think if your down ringside u may fair better as other buyers who have a soft spot for the sheep game may not bid against u as much......then again they might bid on u more😂😂......I think the pen lizzy was bidding on were a more classier looking sheep not saying g urs were bad but hers although dearer might have sold better.......sorry for long comment loved ever minute of ur market video.....Best of luck with ur lambs.......

OMG , I was in sheep all my life and could never see the sense in store prices back then or now . Too much of a risk to see a healthy profit later and it was always the dairy boys pushing up the price as they still have the regular milk cheques coming in so the risk is less for them . Also most of them store lambs will melt as they have only recently been weaned , Your banking on the end of year trade too . Plus no doubt some will die as we all know its a sheeps ambition in life to die

What kind of lambs were you hoping to get? Unfortunately farming is a big risk and the small farmer takes a bigger hit when it goes sideways than the big commercial farms.
