Funny story. NAIA's reputation as the worst airport in the Asian hemisphere is famous among Japanese travelers, so I decided to test it. Pre-covid, I put my broken laptop inside my check-in suitcase on a flight with Philippine Airlines from Tokyo to Manila. I wondered will it get stolen or not and when I opened my suitcase at the hotel... my broken laptop vanished 🤣 Since that day, I've told my friends to dispose of their broken electronics inside a suitcase onboard a flight to Manila cause the friendly employees at NAIA will gladly dispose of them for you. Here in Japan you have to pay to recyclye/dispose of your broken electronics (like a Filipino environment tax) so I'll gladly let the Philippines do it for free.
For all you pick pocket geniuses hope you had as much fun as I did with my wallet. On April 16 2020 I arrived in Manila and my wallet disappeared ,it was rigged, four 100.00$ Play money was inside.A note with the words f…you written was included 😅
This is very scary to go home to the Philippines. Your exposing these scams will really help us be aware. I will raise this isssue with the organizers of the upcoming international convention which I am invited to present.
During President Duterte's term, these anomalies at the International airport are removed and or minimised. Why is it getting rampant again in BBM'S administration. What is he doing about it?
If you are filipino you should be well aware of these issues of corruption, they are nothing new and have been going on for decades. Who are you trying to fool... LOL. You are just a POSER - so obvious...
i was told by Philippine airline checkin to pay for my seats where i had upgraded from economy to premium economy. I informed the woman that i had already paid when i upgraded but she said no and that i must pay again. I started to get a bit angry and she called a manager. This woman also explained that i must pay for the upgraded seats and again i explained that when you upgrade online that you must pay with credit card immediately. After about 30 minutes and my voice getting louder they finally agreed that i could pass through without making any payment.
Yes i could have but why should i ? i had done this upgrade many times in the past and never had a problem. Why should they question me and demand i pay for the seats again? And why in the end did they give in and let me through without me paying anything? All they were trying to do was get some extra cash !!!
@@kuya.Ian63 I think those vultures in uniform were just trying to shake you down for some extra cash. If they succeeded, they would've pocketed your money. If you didn't bite, then everything's okay. They lose nothing, and their extortion attempt goes unreported. Then on to the next victim.....
About 2 weeks ago I arrive at the Manila airports I got scammed twice , there a security by exit door make remarks wanted me pay the security, I was asking where the exit I needed to warn tourists coming in Manila, do not talk to security people , other taxi stay away from them . I am retired security forces
NAIA has had problems ever since I visited Manila and I'm talking about the 1980s. I am now considered an experienced traveller and rarely encounter such scams. Prime targets are first time travellers who do not have experience of airports. Personally I avoid NAIA and use Clark for my travels. I've always found the staff there friendly, efficient and helpful.
Totally true . I personally know the thieves in NAIA since the 1980s. They're still doing it to this day . There's no way to stop them because the Philippines government is the number 1 thief . Infrastructure projects are 10x inflated. Pork barrel. Etc
Yung galing sa Spain, I partly blame her for not being cautious. DO NOT trust a stranger to watch your belongings or carry/watch anybody's belongings. Kasi madami ng halang ang kaluluwa.
Kaya nga bakit mo ipagkakatiwla yung bagahe mo sa ndi mo manlang kakilala diba? Kahit sa kubeta or kakain ako tangay tangay ko bagahe ko subrang naive c kabayan silbing aral nalang to sating mga OFW
@@lindasglinda7541 why blame the victim? Why blame the rape victim for wearing sexy clothes? So you are saying that it's her fault for inviting men to r x ape her by wearing sexy and revealing clothes
Remove all the garbage people in the airport, top to bottom. Until these garbage are inside, the whole airport will stinks! Throw them away where they can't milk anybody &:STOP RECYCLING them! 🥺
Sadly scammers will always go for easy targets like this passenger from Spain. Not laying the blame at her feet but that’s how the world rolls. Just be aware of your surroundings and always be vigilant especially in these times.
My experienced was I was 3kg excess and he was asking me for $160 dollars I refused to pay as I didnt have any money and I ask for the manager , I told her I have only 5.00 pounds thats for my train ticket back to london. This was 2011 imagine that still go on up till now. so many thieves in NAIA as if the criminals are all around there .They are shamesles. the goverment is not doing anything about it. So sad Thats why Im afraid to go home.
Send this video a long with the comments to the Philippines department of tourism, the airport, PAL and all the other international airlines that fly into NAIA and other govt and travel related agencies. Make sure you let them all know all the depts, airlines you sent the video. Suggest mandatory jail time for those caught scamming the public. We have to put pressure on all of them!
I have been to the Philippines over 15 times in the last 12 years. Taken many flights Domestically to other Islands also. Have only had problems after exiting the Airport and in Manila. Small scams (i am white) of having to overpay. Puti Pricing is what I call it diba. I always thought I was safe once inside the Airport, sadly that is changing now. I never stay in Manila longer than I have to. Lots of small theft happens there. I LOVE the Province, have a nice house there and just bought some property near Tarlac. The Philippines will be my home soon. I love it there. Most of the people are great so it is sad that I am hearing this trouble. Thanks for sharing Jennifer T!
As always, the answer is, “ this incident is now under investigation “ , always if that happens, with proof , fire the accounted personnel, charge and never set foot to any government position for that matter
Didn't you hear they are doing preventive suspension of the agent....the question is what are they preventing.....you do the crime you they should pay the time but they just get transferred to other locations....no one gets prosecuted......you wanna clean this up....fire everybody from head to the bottom....I'm pretty sure ther were be a lot of replacement....a lot of people wanting to work......get those other people chance....again as what this goons are saying ...officials are corrupting what about us...if they can do it we can do it too....shameless....
As a Philippine government officer myself, " only in the Philippines" . What's wrong with sharing some of your wealth with us , public servants. It's more fun in the Philippines. No theft is boring.
Embarrassing, I swear its a shame being a Filipino. The traveler Mary Claire should have contacted the NBI. I mean every travelers should have NBI's number handy., make that call in front of these filthy scammers, you'll see how fast we can curb these illegal practices. That passenger from Spain..well, she did it to herself. But as far as my travel experiences in the Philippines..not once that I fell victim at NAIA...why, because im vigilant and I know my rights as a traveler. Thanks for posting this Jennifer, hope this helps many of our Kababayans traveling.
Hello Jennifer and great update my friend! Hope everyone can travel with peace of mind while using common sense to avoid these scammers! Former President Duterte would of dealt wifh these people very severely!
Hi Jen ithey need jail time to stop it etc Phillipines is sadly known for alot of scams a similar resent one is siquijor ferry ticket agents saying sold out ferry etc but out selling tickets at higher prices it just never ends
Naia terminal 2 has been doing that for a long time bec I hv experienced that myself in 1998..... Then another in our vacation back to Manila with my friend, there were officers there claiming that there something wrong with our boxes. They said that they detected metal which is just a souvenir and asking us money to put in our passport to hand to them...After those incidents, I was already afraid at our airport. I am an OFW and they are taking advantage of us thinking that we are earning that much but we don't. Sad truth😢
So far so good. I arrived at Terminal 1 a week ago without any problems. A few days later I departed out of Terminal 2 leaving the Philippines and again without any problems. I am always vigilant; I'm watching everyone and everything.
This is really a shame on Phil. I just missed those times when Duterte was the president in which filipinos were mindful of the regulations to follow and those people working in the airport were tamed & disciplined.
Yes it is so sad. We had so much expectation during BBM's inaugural speech.Comparatively speaking, We felt much safer during President Duterte's. administration. BBM should maintain his late father's legacy of being tough, firm and fair.
Yes , very well said Miss Jennefer, harapan harapan walang May sumisita😮 nakakaloka ( maraming kasabwat ), GOD BLESS US ALL...REALLY BE MINDFUL...DONT TRUST RIGHT AWAY...
I took pictures of my bags being weight in the USA. It's was suddenly heavy 4k. I showed my pic and she changed after. It's always fun in Philippines 😊.
I dont live in the Philippines anymore but still is saddened me hearing these crimes occurring right at the door step of the country, the airport. Is scammers culture becoming normal in the Philippines? Sad.
I actually hate NAIA and from now on I will try to avoid it like a plague. Rather use Cebu. My latest thing was as I was passing my hand carry through security and I had to go through the metal detector, the security guy looks at me and asks me am I a man or a woman? I am a 70 year old male with almost no hair and definitely don't look anything like a lady. I was so insulted, what business does he have asking me that question? What has that to do with security? I thought about making a stink about it but realised I had better say nothing as they are all powerful and I didn't want problems. In retrospect, I should have reported him. It is really time the government did something about NAIA, it is ruining the reputation of the Philippines. When I left the Philippines I went via Cebu, what a pleasure.
I watched the story of that Ofw who came from Spain n trusted her suitcases n hand carry to that scrupulous lady who was caught in the hotel. I couldn’t comprehend how she just left it with a stranger. Well she said madali syang mag trust KAHIN kanino. Government should do something about this with heavy penalty. It looks like the whole airport is full of bad people.
As much as I don't like Manila Airport and using it, I never had a problem when I went through there two weeks ago. Also to be honest with you my flight would have been a prime target flight to have gotten luggage stolen because it was a flight from Los Angeles to Manila on Philippine Airlines and the plane was booked full. When I was at the check-in line at LAX a lot of Filipino expats had multiple upon multiple luggage and cardboard boxes which I'm sure the cardboard boxes had many items they was bringing back to their families. My flight had no issue.
Fire them all, replace them all, add more security cameras, investigate every single complains, allow both passenger and airport worker video tape all the way until travelers already in the plane.
I'm a Filipino and so ashamed that these incidents happened at the NAIA airport. I'm a retired OFW and yearly went home but I haven't encountered such scandals. Only I can attest for the very crawling lines at Immigration.. Thanks for updating us!
I and our family take only 1 regular suitcase each , with below required baggage allowance every time we go to the Philippines ever since we came here in 1976. We don’t want to burden ourselves while traveling. No balikbayan box sent ,just ourselves. Thank God our families in the Philippines loved our presence and not the materials. Back home ,they ❤usually say ,what you got there,we got it here too. Just my testimony.
That’s why NAIA should be renamed to NA KAKAHIA. It’s the shameful airport, where most foreigners will have to go through, when arrive and depart the country.
Boxes shipped by boat are also vulnerable to theft. We shipped one box and discovered a hole and contents missing when the box arrived at the house in the Philippines.
@@kuyag68 we have been shipping for 25 years at least two times a year and the only time we had a problem was when there was a train wreck in the USA and they had the inventory everything. Eventually both boxes arrived with all the items.
They always announce in the airport do not leave your luggage with a stranger. Maybe those people need to pay attention, so that doesn’t happen to them.
hi, Jen currently in NAIA heading for Singapore. I know there are some problems here but as a frequent traveler here I have always had a smooth experience. We landed 3 weeks ago and had no issues with arrival. We got through immigration quickly both arriving and departing. I hope nobody else experiences what they went through it just ruins the reputation of a wonderful country I’ve visited for the last 35 years. By bringing attention to this like you are hopefully will force change of behavior. Note United wants $100 for 1 pound over weight. We had to shift things around to avoid it,p. Thankfully no personal bank account was on a slip of paper! Continue the fight we need people like you to make everyone aware that when traveling you must pay attention to everything going around you! Scammers are always around the corner looking for those inexperienced travelers to pray on. For those experienced travelers never get too comfortable and let your guard down!
Similar incident my friend who flew to USA lasr January had excess baggage of 1-2kls and the check in agent of PAL informed her, gave back her passport & secretly said “mam kayo na po bahala kahit magkanu na lang po, palulusutin ko na excess baggage nyo” NAIA & airline mgmt shld get rid of these people!
In case mawala may insurance pa. 😅
Excess weight luggage fee should be shown on every check in counter with the amount of fee per weight either by lbs or kilos and can also be check on line or airline ticket agents so the passenger will be made aware and not be scammed and there should be uniform fee from all airline this is just an opinion NAIA or other workers whose complain is having hardship in life is not an excuse to steal from the passenger
I ship my box tot he hotel before i go there, maybe 2 months before is okay depending where you are. the hotel will hold the box for you. I have done this several years already.
Hi Jennifer, interesting vlog. I am wondering if criminal convictions are ever brought against these lawbreakers. Suspension from your work is not enough. Does anybody know what happened to the security staff who stole money from the bags going through the scanning machine?
Also be careful when you get to the Philippines. At NAIA I arrived and tried to find a ride from international to domestic and the drivers of the shuttles and taxi tried to scam me for 2500 p just to transfer from international to domestic terminals.
LET ME ADD TO THAT. When you buy alcoholic drinks at Duty Free Shops like whiskey, cognac, etc., the bottles are usually put in a plastic bag. On your way out, airport boys offer to help you with your cart. The modus operandi is: the plastic bag is “accidentally” dropped from the cart and the bottles break, so you wouldn’t have any use for the spirits anymore. The “kind” helper respectfully asks if he can have them; siyempre, you agree. They pass the drinks thru a sieve with their barkadas and party!
Going on any island especially they charge you an “environmental fee”, so you are not allowed to go there unless you pay this fee. If foreigners are helping the locals by buying goods such as food, hotels, and activities we shouldn’t be charged a extra fee.
@@garyzies3486 Entitled? When you drop thousands of dollars to locals that is far from entitled. In English we often correlate a ""guest" as a person that doesn't pay or is treated special than the "regular" person. Instead we are not treated special in any way. Actually taken advantage of if anything. "Foreign tax" is a commonly word used there. Let's just call it for what it is, "scammed". This is extremely racist.
@@TankTheSpank I live "there" and I know how it works. For people like you, it's best to go elsewhere. Nobody forces you to spend thousands of dollars or to come to a country where you feel like your being scammed or discriminated. Don't forget, many foreigners come to the Philippines to exploit the women here and disrespect Filipinos. You don't own this place and you are not a citizen here, so you are considered a guest. Like it or not....Clearly, the Philippines is NOT a place for you.
My favorite scam has been via Cebu Pac. In some smaller airports, they tend to calibrate their scales to weigh more than the actual item weight. I put my laptop on there and the scale said it was 12 kg when it only weighs 4 kg. I pointed it out to a few Filipinos and they raised a stink. At NAIA, I have thus far only seen issues when flying Philippine Airlines. The baggage handlers there need to be vetted better. I am sure the hiring pool would be extremely large these days, were the government to fire them all and start fresh.
Never trust and fire all of them right away!!! Disgusting, don’t bring lots of items, only what is needed!!! Lots of items from USA, we have now in the Philippines. Bring your luggage in the restroom, then disinfect it!!
Hello Jennifer. I was in the Philippines last year May 2023 . Indeed it happened to me . I ended up paying 16,000 pesos . The agent insisted I must pay the amount . And I did . I had only 2 baggage I was disappointed. But
So far as a frequent traveler, me and my hubby haven't experienced any problems at NAIA and thank God. Laptop were asked and all things with batteries were put in the handcarries bag . Though of course still we still have to be vigilant because of some news.
After I got my bags stolen at NAIA, I told cops to fill a bag with drugs and wait for someone to come steal it , and bust them! They could put this to an end REAL QUICK! Stay away from ASAP TICKETS/PAL.
Jen just arrived Monday evening from Seattle. While leaving Manila Airport nobody even checked our luggage to make sure we had not grabbed somebody else also. Somebody could have easily taken someone bags. Bad for business.
I never experience any of these shenanigans during PRRD time...we went Phils every year from 2016 to 2021 except covid pandemic and we're very confident going in and out of the airport..the personnel were all polite and helpful. My Australuan brother in law left his wallet on the counter/conveyor and one of the staff was chasing him and handed it over to him. He was all praises to airport staff honesty and kindness. We'll try to avoid NAIA by landing and exiting in Davao...to be sure!
Before you leave your bags with a stranger make sure that you have someone with you to watch that person so that you can see if they're going to try to steal the luggage so that you can catch a thief. It's like scamming a scammer. There's no way in hell that I would ever pay for extra baggage charge and pay it to someone's private bank account. If someone did that to me I would ask to talk to a supervisor. I'm a nice person but that all goes out the door when it comes to thieves. I also have a scale that we use to weigh our luggage so that we don't have to go through the hassle of taking things out until it's not overweight. Plus NAIA has places where you can weigh your bags before you check them in. We used them before we left to come back to the US.
Result of a corrupt government. Its sad. The salaries of regular people in the Philippines is so low that makes some of them do crime. The target should be the big time corrupt billionaires.
I got ripped off by Cathy Pacific flying to Philippines 🇵🇭 I will never use them again also I tell other people about my experience and tell people not to fly with them. I enjoy going to Philippines will use Emirates instead
It's never going to stop. NAIA is a a swamp full of crooks in my humble opinion. They need to change the whole management. Something is going on there. It's the best way to avoid this airport. Try Cebu and Davao international airports.
Of my 27 years of going through NAIA I have yet to lose something/anything-knock on wood. However, "security/screening" guys are so fixated on confiscating cigarette lighters. Travelling through the EU you can have cigarette lighter on your person no problem. On the positive side there are also nice helpful people working at the airport.
Now as far as the check in agent, it's obvious it wasn't the first time that they had done that because they was pretty confident that they was not going to get caught even though they handed that OFW a napkin with a bank account. Wow definitely left themselves a paper trail. It's obvious the check in agent thought the OFW was not going to say anything. As far as the 11,000 it's obvious it was a phantom number amount that Im sure that agent has used before. Then for them to go to the passenger at the gate in front of other coworkers and other passengers that goes to show there's more than one person involved in that. But as I said in my previous comment. I flew Philippines Airlines from Los Angeles to Manila and there was no issue with me losing anything and I didn't hear of any other passengers having issue. Also that bank account number the check-in agent gave the OFW, the proper authority should look at that account to see how many large transaction were made into that account that would coincide with passengers complaints. I almost forgot, check to see what the Philippine law is as far as money theft and what amount goes from a misdemeanor and becomes a felony. Maybe that's where the 11,000 comes into play since you was curious about that amount. Just a guess but maybe it's a misdemeanor at 11,000 but a felony at 12,000 and that particular agent may know that. You should look it up. Anyways I enjoyed my trip there. Went to Baguio City on a weekend getaway with girlfriend. Excellent weather there. The girlfriend was a little shell shocked by the coolness at night but also said it felt very relaxing. Excellent place for a vacation. It's not overpriced compared to Boracay. Very relaxing comfortable atmosphere there in Baguio City. One of my better experiences.
KEEP IN MIND NOT ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES DOIN THIS....ITS ALL OVER THE WORLD, DONT MAKE IT LIKE ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES THAT THESE SCAMMERS IS ONLY HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY.
I made a prepaid baggage for 10 kls at the Ortigas PAL Office but then when we checked in the baggage with PAL at the NAIA airport bound for Cebu, the agent said Nothing is showning 10 kg in the system. I was told to pay by the check-in agent for P 2000+ daw. So I have to rush to the PAL office adjacent to the NAIA security area and have to pay again but was issued something like P 600.0+ invoice. We almost missed our fligh to Cebu. Kaya be very mindful of the items and baggages that you take with you & bring to the airport lalo na ang mga hand carry items natin na purse at pitaka na may laman na pera, ID & passport at inyong dala-dalang jewelries and most importantly matalas ang mata at presence of mind kapag nasa Security checks sa machines ang ating mga hand carry baggages. Kung 2 or more of you are travelling together dapat magkasunod kayong mag pa check para di masalisihan. Other tips that I would like to share, buy an Apple tags for your checked in baggages and also sa inyong main hand carry hand bag if you can afford it.
How dare these officials staining the reputation of their department and the filipino people. I am not sure if our law maker would take concrete or maybe simple action for this unethical act as public officials to solve this problem. I am just wondering why their legal basis unit didnt do something to make everything in order despite of these consistent actions like this which is happening within their department.
Check in agents will also ask you to pay travel tax, I was asked and told the agent, it's already included when I booked my trip. Check the breakdown of the charges you paid so you'll not pay twice for the travel tax. I think it's 1500
Why didn't she go straight to a police officer to report it. What is wrong with this people and what is wrong with this airport. It's ashame airport. So embarrassing.
Suggestion: fire agad pag nahuli. Ang daming fresh grads na walang trabaho. If strict ang policy pag nahuli the employees will think twice before committing a scam.
Last February I went to PAL Ticketing Office in Balibago Angeles City to inquire for Excess Baggage the PAL Employee told me it will Cost me $150 for the extra Baggage, then when I was in NAIA to check in the the lady from the Counter telling me it’s $200 then I said to her your ticketing office Angeles City told me it’s only $150 then she told if I paid up front in that office in Angeles City I wont get charge to that amount and in NAIA it’s different amount and I got Pissed, that’s not a good Costumer service you guy you’re ripping off your passenger I said to her😡😩
When I travel I just bring my clothes in the suitcase. Pasalubongs will be put in balikbayan box and shipped 2 months before. Always pack pjs and extra clothes in handcarry just in case luggage doesn’t arrive. Maybe should hide air tag nowadays to track it too!!!
True I also lost my jewelry I didn’t say anything cause I notice it after a month when I want to wear it forget about it I put it in my hand carry luggage I put it in a bottom of my luggage my jewelry it’s been 40yrs with me I don’t even use it cause I’m afraid here in PI I only use it in US and special occasion
If your bag is 12(!) kilos overweight, that's really your fault for not knowing what the luggage allowance limit is. Check carefully next time what the weight limit is.
Jennifer, Hi and thank you for your as always informative videos. I visited PH back in March, my first time, and after many hours travelling from the UK I arrived in Clark International bleary eyed and sleepy. Everything went well through security, picking up my bags and heading towards the exit. I had been told prior to arrival to get a local sim card, as they are invaluable once you arrive, and my own was unlikely to be of any good. Happily there were two 'companies' side by side just before you exited into the open air. Yay, job done I can call people tell them I arrived etc. So I approached and was told of the offers available. Most people, (I was told) opt for the 2k peso for a month deal, are you already suspicious(?) It seem on a par with back home for something similar and I figured I could also use it out and about with my laptop, which I was informed I would be able to. Remember I was very tired, probably jet lagged, and just wanted to get to my destination and sleep. So, yes I bought the card and the package for calls, massaging and data, they even set it all up for me!! I am not great with technology...😏 I went on my way and for the next week proceeded to enjoy my phone usage. Then it stopped😮 I was with someone who could help me, actually their daughter, she is very (VERY) knowledgeable about all this internet, phone, and useage. It turned out that all that had been put on my phone was the freebies that came with the offer, the actual 2k worth of data etc. had not even been loaded onto my phone 😯😖 Some days later, after I had calmed down, and my friend's daughter had put a real package of stuff onto my phone, I contacted the airport to tell them what was happening on their premises and were they aware. I received a mail back saying they were sorry this had happened and would pass it onto the relevant department to be investigated further. I have heard nothing since. I don't know if others have had any similar experience to this, but at least now hopefully those seeing your blogs can be made aware. Of course they may be more awake than I was and spot an obvious scam in the first place 😏
When I arrived in Manila last year the security office told me the ATM machine is on the other side of the corridor but he insisted I leave my bags here he will watch it for me ... But of course I refuse to leave my bags. When I arrived at my hotel I noticed on of my electronic devices missing but the thief didn't take the power plug. In all my check luggage had lock on them but they managed to open it and stole my device. I'm thinking in the future I will put plastic over my luggage.
Jennifer. I was over baggage by 3 kg I was charged 1 thousand 500 pasos that was last year I will be putting else baggage on my travels this time I return back July and extend my stay ❤
Jennifer, Many Times, If You Have Excess Bagage, It Can Be Cheaper( and Even Faster) To Ship That Extra Before You Fly Home, Or To Your Destination. Check Around. It Could Save you Up to 50% Over What Airlines Charge.
The best thing the Philippines ever did for the tourists was to bring in Uber/Grab. Using regular taxis in the past was so stressful because many cab drivers took advantage of the tourists. Imagine it's your first trip to the Philippines and the first Filipino you meet was the scamming airport taxi driver? What an awful introduction to the country. It's the same situation at the airport. Someone is welcomed to the country by having their things stolen.
The that had overweight baggage should have asked immediately for someone in charge. She was being charged double the amount it should have been, and send to a personal account??
I remember when my Japanese husband went to the NAIA TOILET. Somebody with a knife on his hand asked him money inside the comfort room. But it was good he had no much money coz I was the one keeping it.😂
