Pretty obvious by the director but missed by almost everyone?? haha No matter the skill level and hand you have, even if you didnt see cheating all the way through, you might miss that key card at the end that gives the other guy the winning hand. So theres always risk even when you are the best.

in the context of the film there is a real expectation that Beatty might lose because up until this point in the movie he has been cheating at cards using special glasses and marked decks which he devised by breaking into a printing factory that printed playing cards for major casinos around Europe and England, and marking the printing plates and so in all his previous games he is winning easily because he knows what his opponents have, but in the final game the porter brings up some old dusty playing cards from the basement stock that have not been recently printed and so they are not marked and Beatty finds that he has to play the game for real without cheating...up until this point in the movie we never see him lose but he has been cheating in every single game...so will he actually be able to win without cheating is the question......ah I guess you need to watch the film from start to finish to get the tone of it.
Which makes no sense since the game was to be "Table Stakes"; meaning, that only the chips on the table are in play. They could not bring in extraneous money- like Mr. Dimitrios tried to do to 007 in Casino Royale.

I don’t understand how a guy writes a check for an amount for more than the other stack and the guy has to bring out a check to call. Makes no sense, u play till u out of chips. Rebuy after a hand. Not only is it no limit stud, it’s no max buy in and u can add to ur stack during the hand.
At that lofty level of high society, your integrity in honoring your debts must be without question. Renege on any marker in any game of chance, & you'll not only be barred from gambling everywhere, but no one will transact business with you, of any kind. Essentially, you'll be ostracized in the business world, & blacklisted from elite social engagements hereafter, as good as dead to that level of society. Nobody commits social suicide over a handful of cards, unless they're genuinely off their rocker, & that's a whole different barrel of monkeys.
This is a scene from the relatively little known swinging 60s film 'Kaleidoscope ',which was on RU-vid a few monthsago. Well worth watching for any fan of WB. An odd gem with suavity from WB anc some v clunky unrealistic villainy from EP!
Love or hate the way the poker is played, you know Lincoln has kings full, but the shock is that Dominion doesn’t have quad tens. Beautiful story telling Open watching a second time, there’s an important detail, guy to Warren Beaty’s left folds a trey and a king. I guess that’s why dominion that his tens full were good lol
its called high stakes poker .. however normally you play the money you are bought in , pulling out a checkbook and adding money on the table is quite unordinary at least today .. and if this was a real game with real better one of the players would have already smash a bottle on that chinese dealer for making those sounds

Last round betting. When Beatty called the other guy had to know Beatty’s down card would be a King or 3. Otherwise no way to even beat 3 10s regardless of whether other guy had another jack
@@GizmoBeach yeah, but if he didn’t already have a 3 or king as down card, he couldn’t even beat the 3 10s that were up and showing. bad script. the script should have been written that the guy with 3 10s got concerned when Beatty first called.
Movies (and audiences) don't really have this kind of patience anymore. A quiet scene with very little music, a lot of stagnant shots and cutaways to character reactions. I love the part where the audience is forced to wait the true amount of time it takes to write a check, leaving time for tension to mount. In a modern-day film he would have been done with that check in under 4 seconds. Not so much a judgement as an observations, but I do think current day films could afford to take some cues from this style of storytelling.
Lincoln doesn't have to have a full her. He could just have an ace or a queen in the hole and believe it is good - wich is mostly the case in 5-Card-Stud. In fact a full house is very unlikely, as a king as well as a three are already gone. But this makes the last bet even more stupid, because Lincoln will in the most times never call, knowing that he is beaten. When he calls, villain loses half the time. Even if villain had quads here, he should never bet but check to maybe induce a bluff.
Once adjusted for inflation and the current exchange of pounds sterling to American dollars, this is an $18,000,000 pot... the river bet itself is insane when you can only get called if the guy is beating you.
@@dochmbi You can see by his expression when he shows the jack that he wasn't bluffing, genius. Also, why would any accomplished player try to bluff someone off the best hand he ever has in that spot?
@@dochmbi that wasn’t a bluff. You’re trying to use current poker logic on a 60 year old film. He didn’t think, can I get kings full to fold. He didn’t think, the guy can only call if he has kings full. He thought, I have a full house and he has two pair or a smaller full house, even though Beatty played it like he had the King under there the whole way which is muddling your thinking even further because aside from the fact it’s a film, it’s obvious he check raises 4th street with 3 kings in case his opponents does have the ten.
Every long-term pro gambler experiences these positive streaks. The problem is stocking away these winnings for negative streaks. Or just getting out of the game completely and finding out some other more stable investments to get involved with.... Real estate is the most proven secure...
I don't know why the guy who wrote the check looks so relaxed when Warren Beatty starts to call a hand that shows three 10's. Beatty can't call with 3's full, so that means he has Kings full. So the other guy should realize he lost with his 10s full. I Don't understand why he looks so shocked. He should have been already in despair the moment Beatty starts to call with his chips.
@@SergeantExtremewhile I agree with this, Beatty check raises 4th street with 2 kings showing. So he’s repping that he has the case king as his hole card. Making the ridiculous over bet on fifth street really bad. The ONLY hand he can get called by is kings full
I guess when he got that 10 fulls of jacks he limped in with so much confidence that he tought he was going make him fold his 2 top pair and forgetting the idea if that face down card was probably a King what an incredible movie to watch poker acting.
From the film, Kaleidoscope. Warren used to drive an Aston Martin Volante , such a cool film. The way he calls bluff, at the end making his opponent feel he’s one as he scoffs on his drink , then the surprise, priceless.
Bluff? What bluff are you talking about? The rich man had a full house. That's a very good hand, and is super rare to get. Warren's character just had a better hand; in fact, the only possible hand that could beat his was quad 10s. Both players would have gone all in had this been a real hand (you can't just pull out a checkbook irl) and it would have been just down to luck.
The movie is interesting. It's a version of Ian Flemings Casino Royal, but without James Bond. Instead we have Warren Beatty who is playing a burglar and card cheat. What seriously pulls the movie down, is a inspector from Scotland Yard with a very strange behaviour. The second best scene, after the poker scene, is the murder by flamethrower in Dominions cellar. The most interesting scene is from the Chemin de fer game, a game more or less obsolete nowadays and replaced with Punto Banco/ Baccarat. Interestingly, Wizard of Oz have never seen a Chemin de fer game and cannot find any such game. But it's still played in some Casinos in Italy. The name of the movie is Kaleidoscope, from 1966.
String betting is through the roof on this table. Also, what is the point of having chips on the table, if you can reach into your pocket for more if you need them.
The drama of the cards carries the scene, Beatty needs to hit the full house 3 kings to secure that cash, simple yet works very well, great camerawork and Beatty looks great (pause but for real)
People forget that for a long time early in his career before "Bonnie and Clyde," Warren Beatty was better known for who he dated than for his films. There's a reason why there is such a thing as table stakes. Bill Gates could just sit down at any game in the world and bet 10 billion on every hand and no one could call.
Saw Billy Gates playing blackjack in Vegas alone at a table a short distance away ; in 1988. At the time he was arguably the richest person in the world. He was playing , as I recall, with mere 25 dollar chips.
How can that guy be so confident while getting called on the river, he has trips on the table while Warren has two pair, so its obvious Warren's gonna have either a 3 or K in the hole.
The part missing from this scene is prior to this game being played Beatty broke into the warehouse where they manufacture the cards and mark all of them. He essentially was able to see his opponents cards even face down.
@@obiwon76 Except in this scene he's not wearing the glasses that can tell him what the cards are. If you'd actually watched the movie you would know that he needs his glasses to read the markings on the cards that he put on them in the factory. This particular hand is played straight up.

The only hole card that could have beaten Beatty's hand would have been another 10. The reason he spits out his drink is because he's relieved that his opponent revealed a full house instead of 4 of a kind.
Hears what i dont get. For the guy who lost, how can you be comfortable getting called when you can see the guy has two pair shown and you have trips shown? Like youre already beating 2 pair, everyone can see that u are, and yet he still calls you. Even if you only had trips he would have still needed a third king for a call to make sense.
Best part of winning such a insane amount is that you know then that the dealer and place isnt crooked and you could come back!! Very important win or lose, to be gracious or you will never be invited back usually. That guy that flipped out and turned others cards over has broken all sorts of rules and will never play again at this level.
I have to watch this movie to see if the Dealer was in on it too. Without the River, Beatty would have been beat. And why hasn't anyone mentioned what a gorgeous woman Susannah York was?
Now I know whence came the "inspiration" for the confrontation during a poker game between James Bond and the villain Le Chiffre in "Casino Royale" (2006), including the hard stares and the swooning lady.

@@toptenguy1 a slow roll would be if the other one went allin and he waits pretending he is thinking and calls 1 minute later with the nuts.he called the guy waited to see his hand (you should always wait until your opponent turns over his hand). then he also turns over his hand maybe 5 seconds later. that is not very slow. but ok we might see things differently.
@@r.w.221 Yep, I think we're seeing 2 different kinds of slow rolls. His "shocked" reaction was totally unnecessary and it made his opponent think that he won. Bottom line, we can agree that slow rolls suck. :)
Another silly poker scene where we are supposed to believe the protagonist is a great poker player when in reality, his opponent made an incomprehensibly bad bet. $250,000 means that there is NO WAY you get called unless you are going to get beat. You see your opponent has two pair with one of those pairs being higher than your top full house card...you don't bet so high that anyone without the third top car would fold.
They never said table stakes, they never did betting rules. This isn’t a modern game and back then this was acceptable betting actions. Not saying it’s good or correct but the crazy thing is just how much money this represents in. Time when a car cost 500 pounds.
This scene was the reason why I wanted to watch this movie. Unfortunately, it was a bit blander than I expected. Everything in this scene looked so awesome, the villain, the tension, the main character's quirky acting. I felt like there could've been more to this movie then as directed. Look at the guy at 3:39 I mean LOOK at the guy. He has a face and acting that defines charisma. Just the way he swallowed that thing was perfect, I was expecting him to be best friends with the main character and tell jokes and be the be-there-with you-till-you-die friend. Same with 6:46. Look at his fucking smile. Maybe i'm just nit picking the cinema, but I feel it could've been a lot better :(
that kind of poker is Japanese style, my grandpa used to manage an small casino club in Lima just for members, named Amazon Club, and my father thought me that.. very interesting and emotional style..! I love it..!
