The Bucs defense of that era was something to behold. They were built for speed and swarm tackled like no other. However, they were also somewhat undersized and could be bullied at times. There was absolutely no bullying the 2000 Ravens defense.

The Ravens went 5 straight games without scoring a touchdown in 2000... And that defense allowed 1 touchdown in 4 playoff games, and allowed the fewest rushing yards and points in an NFL season. Both the 2000 & 2006 Ravens defenses was better than Tampa. Lastly, they won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer.

Check out the 1977 Atlanta Falcons " Gritz Blitz " defense. They allowed just 9.7 points per a game albeit during a 14 game regular season (just one year before the merger). Then there's the 1976 Steelers shutout three straight opponents. Their have been some comparable defenses. What separates Baltimore was their record setting run defense which still stands to this day (970 yards allowed)

Considering it's just a game, I'm willing to sacrifice some of my enjoyment as a spectator to cut down on the injuries. The 2002 Bucs had a great, all-time defense but the 2000 Ravens was the best defense I've ever seen. I've never seen an opposing team QB yell "hike!" and have what seemed like less than 1 second to throw the ball before the Ravens defense collapsed on him. Literally no time to throw the ball, and forget about running the football. In the 2001 Super Bowl, the Giants QB Collins had like 110 yds and 4 picks in the game with a passer rating of "7"

I had to go back and check, because I remembered that there was not a single game in which the Ravens scored 10 that they lost. The only crazy one was when they finally beat the Jags. That’s the one outlier.

The ravens 06 defense was the best defense I ever seen and I've watched every ravens game EVER living in baltimore. We lost in playoffs 15-6 held prime Peyton and Marvin and wayne to 5 FGs no TDs. Offense just was toooo bad even worse then the 2000 offense so it don't get talked about as much as 2000 team winning SB.

I agree. That was the best defense that ive ever seen. They'd be historic had they won it all. That defense was tremendously scary, I've never seen quarterbacks wilt like they did against that defense because they got pummeled all game. They played much better offenses than the 2000 team as well...even though the 2000 team did play good offenses in the post season. The 2000 defense at their peak in the post season was insane but for an entire season, I think 06 was a better defense.

People love nostalgia, even I do. But I'd take the 13 Seahawks over any of them. The Seahawks defense was good all around...Run defense, passing defense etc. Then they shut down one of the greatest qbs of all time and one of the most prolific offenses of all time in the Superbowl. I'm not so sure that 2000 Ravens defense or any defense pre 2010 could contend with today's pass happy offenses. Remember Steve Mcnair won MVP in 2003 with 3215 passing yards, 24Tds and 7 ints. In today's game you aren't even a top 10 candidate for MVP with those numbers. But that's how the game was played back then. More run heavy and defensive minded. But the Seahawks were dominant in both pass defense and run defense. No so sure those older defenses coulda dealt with potent passing games.

You can’t really win in the NFL anymore with subpar QB play. Look at a team like the current Rams. Their defense is the best in the league. Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey are two of the best at their position but their offense is meh. And that’s why they lost to the high powered Packers. Or even the Chicago Bears. They’re defense is ferocious but their offense stinks. Mitchell Trubisky is on par with Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson.

The Ravens allowed fewer points in 19 games in 2000 than ANY TEAM ALL TIME IN 14 or 16 GAME SEASONS. Only gave up 16 points in 4 postseason games. Only defense to shut out other offense in SB. Pure domination. BEST year for a defense ALL-TIME. Nobody close.

The reason why Ravens defense isn’t considered #1 or #2 all time by general consensus is that they did not play an All-Pro QB all season. So they didn’t need to stop the pass, just focus on stopping the run and that was the best run defense of all time but it’s a bit easier to stop the run when you know opposing QBs can’t throw

The 85 Bears didn’t play against any All-Pro QB’s that year either. They did have to play against Montana, but he wasn’t All-Pro that year.

I get the sentiment of the '00 Ravens. My pick is the '85 Bears. The Ravens seemingly came out of nowhere and they had one of the most intelligent defensive squads of all-time. However, their season schedule was INCREDIBLY weak. The only reasonably powerful offense they faced during the season was the Titans, great team, but they were a running team that catered to the Ravens front 8. Now we can't take the playoffs away from them, so they're up there for doing pretty well (Bears still gave up fewer points in the playoffs). However, I still go with the '85 Bears. Better record, and played literally the best 80's teams of the decade in that season, arguably when they all were in their prime (excluding the Redskins and Cowboys who were great, but slightly on the backend of their dominance. They destroyed them btw.). Yeah I get they gave up 31 more points, but that really came down to the Marino Game and the first Bucs game where we let the get a bunch of dummy points.

No defense gave up less points than the 2000 Ravens. Not an expert, but pretty sure points matter in football.

I would too that defense was insane. It’s between 00 ravens and 85 bears. Ravens didn’t get beat like Miami beat Chicago though.

bucs defense gets overlooked because of the ravens and them being so close together, but sapp is right there is a reason they get overlooked not because they aren't one of the best defenses of my life time, but because the ravens defense was the best ever.

The Ravens and Buccs where heavily invested in defense, that's fine but the window isnt open very long, you have about 3 seasons to do it. Today's O-line is more impressive than today's D-line. Tackles are 6'8 360lbs and Guards are 6'4 330lbs. All total, today's O-line is 500lbs heavier and several inches taller than today's D-line. Physically, 4 big guys shouldn't be able to get past 5 bigger guys not to mention today's NFL rules. It is nice to see a fast defense, fast off the snap, good on their feet. It's their best chance.....

Just look at the numbers .....4 shutout in the regular season fewest points and rush yards allowed ever in a season....1 offensive touchdown allowed in the postseason .....superbowl would have been a shutout if it wasn't for the kick return ...10.3 points allowed is still the lowest..bucs defense was special but nothing like the 2000 ravens defense.

2000 Ravens. There was not a single game the entire year where they scored 10+ and lost. That offense went five straight games without scoring a TD and they still went 2-3 during that stretch. They gave up what, one offensive touchdown in four playoff games? Name me a team that won a Super Bowl with a worse QB than Trent F’ing Dilfer.
