I got his autograph in the early 2000s. My brother was wearing a Cub cap and Spahn said he loved beating the Cubs. He was my favorite pitcher. I kept his baseball card longer than any other when I was collecting as a boy in the early 60s.
It's Great to hear from you Adam. Your Grandfather was one of the game's greatest pitchers. You may not believe this but one of my best, and unusual Baseball Cards pictures your Grandfather. It is a very early "Sports Flick"(3D kind of) that was put out by Kellogg's quite a few years back. I hope that you, or members of your family have no objection to my presentation of his career achievements. I mean no disrespect, and I make no profit from the use of his name or image. My intent is the preservation of Baseball History Only. We would like to hear some of the things he talked about, and how he felt about facing certain batters. Anything at all that you or your family would like to share.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1995 at the national sporting collectors convention. He was wonderful and funny he talked about the episode of combat and a lot of the games he pitched. I would say he is the best left handed pitcher ever with 363 win the most ever and he hit the most home runs ever for a pitcher. You always should be proud that you had a wonderful grandpa
From 1961-66, Sandy Koufax was the best left-hander I ever saw, but for consistently excellent pitching over a long, long time, Warren Spahn was the best. Could have won 400 games except for WWII. In his day they pitched every 3rd day and they pitched 9 innings. And he was doing that at age 42; winning 23 games in 1963. Terrific all-around athlete, and a master thinker on the mound. The only pitcher I've seen since that reminds me of Spahn is Greg Maddux.
363 wins is still unheard of by today's standards. If Warren would not have served in World War II he would have had over 400 wins. Simply crazy! P.s. Sandy Koufax only had 165 wins and everybody glorifies him. What an East Coast bias if I'd ever seen one.
@@benmiddleton9984 West Coast bias? Koufax's great years were in L.A. I would add that it was the arthritis affecting his pitching arm (elbow) that forced his premature retirement, not that he'd lost any skill!
Amazing numbers for sure, but the 13 seasons with 20+ wins astonishes me. I know the eras of baseball have a lot to do with it, but it is still quite a feat in my estimation. That and his beautiful delivery. Iconic.
Alex Yamach. Thank you for watching and commenting. I must agree with your Statement. It is the Difference from a Batting standpoint as that of Chipper Jones & Derek Jeter. Almosr Identcal Records.....But Jeter's Baseball cards....especially Rookie cards go for much more $. It is who you play for.....the Braves or the Yankee's ?
Thank you for mentioning the 35 home runs, he also had 57 doubles and 6 triples. Real baseball before the boring designated hitter. 382 complete games and 63 shutouts, probably more than all current pitchers careers combined.
Sandy Koufax did a lot of great things. He had a short career due to arthritis. He could have been a Warren Spahn figure but it didn't happen. Koufax to me is the poor man's Warren Spahn. But I 1000% agree with you. There's definitely an East Coast bias from playing in Milwaukee to the Big Bright Lights of Los Angeles.
Thanks for watching and commenting Johnny. Spahn's name is spoken somewhat around here because he is an essential part of Brave's history. You are correct, he was one of the best and his numbers prove it. I have a few Baseball cards that go back to the 50's. (Korean Conflict) and many show Blank Stats with the words. "Military Service" during the years they were absent from the game. It is important that we recognize these players made sacrifices off the playing field, & on the battlefield.
Yes indeed. Warren Spahn was awarded the Purple Heart; he fought through the hard campaign to advance into Germany in WW II, including the fighting at the "Bridge Too Far," the bridge over the Rhine at Remagen. A hero.
Spahn was a durable and effective pitcher whose goal, as he once said, to win games by working each and every hitter he faced (''to beat the other guy''). In those days people not only rooted for their favorite teams but also followed all good players from other teams as well. Growing up I was a Giants fan who rooted for Mays, McCovey, Spahn, Drysdale, Koufax, Cepeda, Matthews, Gibson, Brock, Marichal, Aaron, Clemente, Ford, Berra, Frank Howard, Boog Powell, Frank Robinson and just about as many other stars who played the game at that point. Baseball was fun as it was played in the old days. Thanks for the memories.
THANK YOU Luis for Watching and Commenting. The names you spoke of are familiar to me as well. A True Baseball Fan makes it his business to know what the names are of "The Best". I do the same thing today. It is a Numbers based Game. As a Baseball Card Collector I can tell you that. The stats determine who is the best. The closer to a .300 Batting Avg. the better, Especially as the Players career Reaches the 10 year mark. A 3.5 or Lower ERA for a Pitcher at the 10 year mark is the Same. Also any Player making it to the All Star Game 2x or more.
What a roll call! Alas,I didn't see any of these great players in person, becoming a fan in the mid-80s--other than Brock in an Old-Timers' game, when he hit a line-drive home run into the right-field loge seats at Shea. Okay, it was a batting-practice ball, but he looked as if he should still be playing ... I have the autographs of many of these players and a lot more from when I lived in NYC and went to card shows. Spahn was a delightful, chatty guy, very much enjoying talking with the fans and cracking jokes with the other ex-players. One of the players I've most enjoyed meeting, if only briefly.
Back in the time span of 1957 to 1965, if you knew your club would be seeing Mr. Span, you knew they were going to be up against it and a win would be a hard earned thing.
Who was the better pitcher, Warren Spahn, or Sandy Koufax? Unfortunately Koufax retired early at the age of 30 due to an arthritic left arm, or he may have been a 300 game winner, too. But Koufax didn't really take off until 1961; on the other hand, Spahn didn't win his first game until he was 25. He also gave up Willie Mays' first career home run as a New York Giants rookie in 1951. Koufax had four no hitters, including a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs in 1965, and that same year, amassed the then single season record for strikeouts with 382, which was later broken by Nolan Ryan with 383 in 1973. Koufax also broke teammate Carl Erskine's World Series record of 14 strikeouts in the 1953 Series against the Yankees by striking out 15 batters in the 1963 World Series, also against the Yankees, including striking out Mickey Mantle.
Warren Spahn missed three full years to military service. Probably would have been over 400 career wins and only the third pitcher to do so if he hadn't.
This was the greatest left-handed picture of the modern era not Sandy Koufax Warren spot had 13 or 20 games seasons not three one spawn in his second Major League season pitched the Boston Braves into the World Series as opposed to the second Major League season of Colfax he let down the Brooklyn Dodgers as they lost to the New York Yankees and went to Los Angeles you can't compare the two one spawn is the greatest of all time left-hander in the modern era
Thanks for watching and commenting Charles. These are the bits of information that get lost in obscurity. I am pleased and surprised at how many viewers share their experiences and memories of Baseball history not only with me, but other fans. I had a viewer contact me after watching the video of NOLAN RYAN. He attended a game where he saw Ryan throwing a football around in the Bull Pen! Imagine seeing that with your own eyes.
Spahn won 20 games 13X & won 301 of his all-time highest live ball era total (363) after integration (1947) & before expansion (1962). He is the only pitcher in the last 100 years to go more than 9 innings in 3 different World Series games. Spahn hit 35 career HRs, led NL pitchers in the field in DPs 5X & led NL pitchers in PKOs 6X with only 5 career balks. His 63 career SHOs are more than any other pitcher in the live ball era. Spahn was the greatest LH of all-time & perhaps baseball's all-time most complete pitcher.
Well nobodyaskedbut, I think you should continue to present solid facts as you have in this Case. Regardless if anyone Asks or Not. I call this Essential Information.
Thanks Doug. You would be surprised at the number of extended family members Warren had that have contacted me. I am thankful that they Allow me to continue to Present this Video.
Thanks RoadWarroirX, I am glad you enjoyed it. There are a number of other great players featured in my Baseball Playlist. I am adding more content as time permits. Also I have a Contact in Japan NODIA that has a vast baseball archive. Check his Channel when you have time. I don't know where he gets it but he's got it.
Jeramy please Share Any Family Stories you have. I for one would Love to hear them. A few months ago I made a Creative Trade and got 2 of Warren's Baseball cards. 1962&1963. Very good condition.
And many thanks to you and your Family for Allowing me to Present this Video on Warren's Behalf. I don't make any money from it, I am just a Hard Core Baseball Fan. I have a Kelloggs Corn Flakes 3D Baseball card of Warren. I have never seen another one other than online. Pretty Rare.
You can bet that in Warren's early days in Boston, that if he was scheduled to pitch on a weekend afternoon at home (when the Braves were not good, except for '48), the attendance at Braves Field that day went up by a few thousand.
I just wanted to say I absolutely loved this short documentary on Warren Spahn in fact I loved it so much I hope you don’t mind but I actually used it in it’s entirety for an @amazon project of mine !!!!!!

I am a Fan of Baseball & the Elite Competitors of the Game, both past & present. Best Wishes for You and Your Family this Holiday, and in 2024🎄
well thank you 🙏!!!! I actually used your video in an @amazon presentation on Warren . It was involving a baseball card that they were selling on there .I thought your video would give a more concise understanding of who he was especially being this product was very expensive . Do you by any chance have an Instagram account ? If you do we should connect because my full video is on there .
I See. I am a Baseball Card Collector as Well. That was a Great Idea on your Part to "Bolster" the Card that was for Sale. Every Collectable is worth a Little more when Documentation is present. I never thought about a Video serving as Documentation, but there is no Reason why it can't be. Law Enforcement Agencies use it to prosecute Criminals. The Oldest Cards I have are Topps 1962 & 1963 of Warren Spahn. Around Here (Atlanta Braves Country) he is Still Highly Regarded. His Number is Retired and on Display at Sun Trust Park Along with Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy, Greg Maddux, Chipper Jones, Bobby Cox, as well as a Number of Others. I Don't have an Instagram Account at this time. But I will Look into setting one up. I am on Facebook and my Email Address is Captjackrackham@gmail.com. Among my Best Baseball Videos are "Chipper Jones HD"and "Derek Jeter". Career Highlights with Appropriate Music Sound Tracks. The More of these I Produced, the Better they Got. In any case I am Pleased with how you have been able to use these presentations to help in your job capacity. That is the Reason I Do This. To inform, Entertain, and in Your Case, make you Look Better in your Job Performance. I Believe in Sharing. When People Contact me and Ask if they can use what I have Posted, I usually say yes. Not Trying to Talk your Ear Off. Merry Christmas!🎄
Spahn had a first rate screwball. He also had excellent control, his wind up hid the ball very well and he had a good pick off move to first. One of the all time greats who somehow gets overlooked.
photos.app.goo.gl/ibJVzyNuWb58cfso8 Hey Colleen, Thank you for your comment. Your Great Uncle was "Great" Indeed. It is ironic that I am hearing from you. About a week ago I got 2 very nice Baseball cards of your Great Uncle in a trade. 1962 & 1963 Topps in Very Good Condition! It is always nice to talk to a Family Member of one of Baseball's Greatest Players. Also, I would Like to express my Appreciation for the Spahn Family allowing me to Present this Video on Warren's behalf.
