Warren was amazing; here's saluting his military record, too!

Never looked into his mechanics much before. Great to see a breakdown of such a legend. Everyone is constantly trying to reinvent the wheel, but much can be learned from the past.

Proud to have a ball that he pitched at the Polo Grounds against the then NY Giants that was fouled off by Giants' first baseman Whitey Lockman.

You forgot to mention that he earned a battlefield commission in addition to the Purple Heart and Bronze Star (earned at the Remagan Bridge - the bridge actually collapsed into the Rhine River some 20 minutes after being called off of it)

Warren Spahn was the greatest left handed pitcher in major league baseball history, and one of the top 6 pitchers in the game as well.

Had he not lost nearly three seasons fighting the NAZI"s, we would be talking about a 400 game winner.

He should get 20 wins for every war medal he earned...that would put him over 400...its a damn shame you never hear his name when the greatest are discussed...for my money the greatest lefty ever

He almost lost his leg when the NAZI'S took out the bridge ( bridge at remagen )

At least he returned from fighting the NAZI'S. He almost died twice ( battle of the bulge and the bridge at remagen )

Asked if he'd ever felt more pressure than pitching in the World Series, Spahn responded, "Well, there was the Battle of the Bulge"

I was right handed, but tried to copy Spahn's delivery throughout my youth in baseball. Another point is that the did not let his back leg velocity carry it past the front leg so that he ended turned away from the batter. He ended facing the batter with his glove in a position to field anything coming back at him. I couldn't tell from this film, but he must have drug his following foot somewhat to allow him to stop while facing the batter without taking anything of the power of the pelvis coming around. As I remember, it's the reason we wore to plates in the old days.

Before Remagan, he was in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

I agree he was the best left handed pitch of all time and very much under appreciated todays experts. Unlike the latest "stand tall and fall" method of throwing over a film front leg, the javelin theory, he was a "drop and drive" pitcher. Like Koufax and Seaver and many others were . To me, his mechanics were very much old school book and , "my opinion too", serve average size young pitched and anyone interested in pitching for more than 5 years better the former mentioned method. He, "sat" on a balance point, just before the drop which allowed his arm to catch up with the rest of his motion. His stride leg crossed the the line created by his left foot to the plate and he landed on of toe first flat foot, not on the heel. Sliding his foot in a slipper, as they used to say, allowing his knee to bend and finishing the drive forward . And he finished balanced with his "zipper line" on that line created from the left foot and the plate. You are correct in saying his motion was the same, no matter the pitch. And his out pitch was a screwball. An old coaches thoughts.

Growing up a Spahn fan in California I was tired of hearing about Koufax being the greatest lefty. I learned to appreciate him though, when he refused to be a part of the all 20th century team unless Spahn was included.

Both of them were beautiful to watch, I also got a kick out of watching Juan Marichal also, though Juan threw at numerous angles, his high leg kick was a freakish thing of beauty. Spahn and Juan once hooked up in a 16 inning 1-0 complete game pitchers duel, Juan being the victor, courtesy of the great Willie May hitting the game winning homer off Spahnie. Ah, baseball ⚾ at its finest.

What is the frame rate? Spahn's pitch is 4 baseballs long as it leaves his hand so the speed can be calculated from that.

He did become a rancher, in Oklahoma. I don't know if he owned the ranch or how large it was. But land prices were undoubtedly a lot lower back when he retired in the 1960s.

Greatest LH of all-time. 382 career CG, led NL 9 times & 20+ in 12 seasons. He's the only pitcher in the last 100 years to go more than 9 innings in 3 world series games. Of all the 300 game winners who pitched entirely in the live ball era he owns the 3rd lowest career ERA (3.09). Only Seaver (2.86) & Grove (3.06) are lower but Spahn won 301 games after intergration & before expansion where as Grove won all his before intergration & Seaver won all his after expansion.

Walter Johnson, winningest RHP whose career extended into the live-ball era, had his best-hitting season the year of his 37th birthday: .433 BA with 2 HR (and a 20-game winner). And Warren Spahn, winningest LHP., had his best-hitting season the year of his 37th birthday: .333 BA with 2 HR (and was a 20-game winner). One of those fun little baseball coincidences, such as Aaron's and Ruth's birthdays being a day apart on the calendar.

TheCardKing39 my uncle is Warren Spahn too and I'm a teacher! This will sound weird but is there any way I could get his info? I'm related to Warren through my grandmother who passed away several years ago and we used to talk about Warren when I was a kid. She always wanted to connect with family from other parts of the country but it was before the internet was what it is today so we never got around to the project.

I'd add Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton in there as well. Stengel was careful with respect to Whitey Ford and his starts. According to Tony Kubek, Casey was very careful about starting him at Fenway, and in his twenties, Whitey had only 1 season (6 in total) with greater than 30 starts
@jameswalton3930
@jameswalton3930 Год назад
Shit, Billy Pierce was better than Ford, Whitey had the mighty Yankees backing him, whereas Pierce had the good but not great offensively challenged Go Go White Sox backing him up, and Billy's not even in the hall of fame.

Spahn won 20 games 13 times which is more times than Koufax, R.Johnson & Carlton did combined. Spahn also won 301 games after integration & before expansion which is one more than Grove won entirely before integration. Spahn's 63 shutouts tops ALL pitchers in the live ball era (after 1920).
