I agree that Desperadoes under the Eves is the masterpiece on that record if I had to chose just one. Carmelita comes next I think. Then Poor Poor Pitiful Me for it's humor and rock swagger and then The French Inhaler. What fantastic breadth and mastery! What a great record. Hasten Down the Wind and Back Turned Looking Down the Path have indelible lyrics and melodies as well.

Wow. That is the kind of songwriting that drives me crazy. The same three chords repeated over and over for three minutes. The song doesn't even contain a bridge. It is just such lazy writing. Obviously Wachtel didn't think much of it either and sadly most of the popular tunes today follow the same method.

I wasn't a religious Letterman viewer - I liked him but not so much that it was mandatory viewing. For that reason, I'm so grateful that I happened to tune in the night Warren made his last appearance when he knew the end was near. You could tell Dave knew it as well and soldiered through the interview knowing he was about to lose a friend. That was back in the day that if you didn't catch it live or had a VCR set up, you were at the mercy of the network to re-air it...

Lucky you, indeed. My wife and I first noticed Jeff drumming on TV's "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" in the late summer of 1971 (mostly because he looked young enough to be a member of The Partridge Family). Then we got to hear him live on Sunday March 19, 1972, when Sonny & Cher played Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana (when Jeff was still just 17 years old). Fast-forward 2 years and we're attending our first Steely Dan concert on April 21, 1974 at the U. of Toledo. Who do we see tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder, but a just-turned 20 Jeff Porcaro. No internet back then, so we had no idea that Jeff and backing vocalist Michael McDonald were part of the "Pretzel Logic" album tour of the U.S. and England, until the band walked out onstage.
