"it was a tactical error on my part for not seeing a doctor for 20 years"... lol. To know that your time is short and still be able crack jokes, its awesome. It makes you appreciate things a lot more. RIP Warren Zevon... I'd like to meet his taylor.
If you haven't heard it yet, listen to Zevon's cover of "knocking on heavens door", written and performed so bravely when he knew that his time was coming to an end, and may I say it is the greatest cover of the song there is. Zevon is the most underappreciated artist, and the greatest in my opinion.
Warren Zevon rocks!!!!!!!!!! Great singer/songwriter/musician. I love his album The Wind that he made while he was dying. I can tell Warren was scared facing death but I'm glad he got to do the last things in his life he wanted to do. He's at peace right now. RIP Warren, we miss you man!! One of Letterman's best shows ever!!!
In my humble opinion, it would be deep if they were pointing one another to Christ rather than the worship of creation. I’m not condemning anyone, rather am only observing something that’s clearly missing and deeply important. This is a cautionary tale and one that’s worth heeding, I think. God bless.
I've only recently discovered Warren Zebon through the work of another late great Dr.Hunter S Thompson, and man,he could really deliver a fine song! RIP Warren & RIP Hunter. The world is less fun & interesting without you both.
How many people, especially a celebrity, would joke about having terminal lung cancer. He was one of a kind and it really sucks we had to lose him. Rock On Warren!
Everyone dies. It is inevitable, but unfortunate. Zevon handles it with such warm acceptance, and I wish I could have as much grace about it when it's my time
Warren Zevon's second studio album was released in 1976, and he should have been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland by March of 2002 when he was still alive (several months before the cancer was initially diagnosed). It is now May of 2015, and Warren has still not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
After years of working in Asbestos my dad was diagnosed w/ Meso on July 7, 1993 and passed away August 7th, 1993, You're right, it is an evil way to die.
I was/am a Linda Ronstandt fan in the sixties and seventies. In an interview she noted her "idols" to be Lowell George and Warren Zevon. I was ignorant. I learned and admired. I miss them.
What balls the man had. Someone on one of these postings was bitching about hero worship of earthly things, but they miss the point. Not trying to be flip. This is just so awesome. Warren, tell John Lennon and Johnny Cash hello, and thanks for everything from those of us still keeping on. You were one of the greats.
I am British and have been aware of Warren since the "Wanted Dead Or Alive" album Sadly, over here, very few people have even heard of him. who else could write a song about Boom Boom Mancini, and a clapped out Studebaker
if i recall from the book, he had sobered up for the show, But after the 3 month mark he would lock himself in his room alone for weeks with little to no contact with friends and family.
Ok everybody howl like a werewolf in his honor. RIP Warren. We all remember you and smile. If I could cure one disease it would be cancer. Terrible way to die.
For those who may not be familiar with Warren Zevon his "back story" and why I wanted to share...., take a look and THINK! PS MtY friends "Enjoy Every Sandwich!"
Mesothelioma is a killer, I just had a malignant mass removed from my lower lung. I feel close to Warren and his music. Although his was probably from asbestos, smoking didn't help and probably contributed to it. Once you get symptoms its usually to late and lung surgery is a bitch. My advice is don't smoke! Cigarettes are killing to many good people.
@diamondjimlegend It will never make a difference. Landau and Wenner have no clue as to who should be in and who shouldn't and have done a sh*t job with the hall of fame.
No he's to good for that shitty place real rock and rollers aren't in it like blue oyster cult and hell even rush until they ran out of new people and started going through old ones
"Enjoy Every Sandwich"... When I first heard him say that it brought tears to my eyes and that simple philosophy changed my life forever. I'm in my 50's and have health problems of my own. Warren Zevon's simple, matter of fact handling of his own demise gave me strength. What a wonderful talent and a wonderful man. He IS already missed by those he touched...
In spite of Warren being snubbed from an institution that should have accepted him so many years ago, I will continue to enjoy every sandwich and then sleep when I'm dead. Although Warren died in L.A., he was born in Chicago; this is where I will continue my bad luck streak in dancing school...accidentally like a martyr.
"This guy's the real deal.... he's not one of these pretty faced, phony rock and roll guys, he's the real deal..... a poet and a singer and a song writer..... it doesn't get any better" Well said, David Letterman.
I got to see him 2 years before he was diagnosed. I remember being impressed that you could actually hear the lyrics. He was very engaged with the audience taking requests and answering questions. During one of the breaks and after the show you could see him walking around the club. You could literally walk right up to him --very approachable. At the time I remember leaving the show very happy and impressed, thinking to myself that was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Crispin almost kicked him in the head... you'd be rude too. Dave always took care of people he respected, he just didn't respect most of the entitled celebrities.
My wife Lili and I were privileged to see this man live in Milwaukee back in 2000. We got there early, and were leaning against the stage, dead-center. It ranks in my top-five concerts of all time.
7:51 "You're reminded to enjoy every sandwich." Damn that hit hard. I lost my pops within 3 months of his diagnosis of lung cancer. Cherish every moment with the ones you love.
I wish I was a bigger fan of Warren Zevon while he was living. He was a true genious & treasure. I have all of his releases & love these videos. he was a very special man. Rest In Peace Buddy....We Miss You.
Zevon shows grace here, but it's important to remember that Zevon's alcoholism relapsed in his final days. His story reads like a piece of poetry, and his end was as imperfect as the rest of his life.
I love David. He interviews well. I would love him just for the music he puts on time and time again. This had to be so tough. What a great show. I miss Warren Zevon constantly. I thought it would get a bit better by now. God bless and thank you for all the good times you spread around. You are loved, Mr. Zevon.
I heard "keep me in your heart..." for the first time in a looog time and decided to find out more about warren.Haven't regreted that for a split second! There are only a few handful of people that can captivate you to such a degree as Zevon. It is a shame that he is gone but soon he will be seen in a truck driving trough new mexico alongside jim morrison and elvis : ) So much talent and such great songs should be mandatory to know!
Thanks for these videos. This really holds a special place in late night history. Letterman in his prime letting Warren Zevon say his musical farewells to the world.
I will never fully comprehend Warren's brilliance. I have never cried when someone died that I never met. I did the day Mr. Zevon died. I'm not going to be able to face death as Warren did because I am not a brave man. I can only hope it sneaks up on me. Only listen to his songs with the lyrics posted ... do this long enough and the reality of his brilliance will be startling. A genius and a under appreciated work of art this man is. All men are NOT created equal, Warren is proof of this. I am an atheist but I hope to god if I am wrong and "they" are correct. I will be able in the AFTER-LIFE to thank Warren for what he has done for me in life. He is an inspiration for me and his talent as a song writer has helped me in my life in ways I could never express in print. Sorry to bother you, I'm feeling down today and just wanted to comment on the topic of Warren Zevon. A man that some, if not most, will never appreciate. I am so happy not to be one of the many who are ignorant in terms regarding to the true, almost unbelievable talent of an under appreciated song writer. A credit to his gender to say the least. Peace-out.
sometimes, when you're doing simple things around the house, maybe you'll think of me and smile.......one of the best lines ever written, so simple, so beautiful.
The ONLY time Lettermen EVER dedicated an entire complete shopw to one artist. it was also one of warren's last public appearances before he passed away from lung cancer at a very you age of 50-something, I believe.
Scared or not, good or bad, he sure as shit put strapped on a giant pair of testicles when he was in public - "You mean you heard about the flu?" for fuck sakes... I'm halfway through the book, and from what I've read, while he did go out with a lot of his old habits, he left the worst ones behind. He knew he wasn't going to be around for much longer and accepted it, reconnecting with his family, and making his final record with his friends, some of the most well known acts in the biz.
Long live Warren Zevon. This was a very emotional episode that had me laughing and tearing up simultaneously. Dave was such a fan of Warren's music as is I, and I felt a real connection with both of them that night.
This Warren Zevon guy was a cowboy! Such a unique voice and style. But he was tough. His songs came across as no-nonsense. Motherfucker makes you feel strength. He was strong. Now he's dead...but...you know the rest...
My Surgeon has operated on people with Meso who had no known connection to asbestos Although asbestos is the cause of Meso, Many surgeons think smoking contributes, and is the catalyst in many cases. You can also loose a lung from meso, and if your other one is crap from smokes, you will be screwed. Go in, get your ribs spread, have them cut the lining and bottom of your lung, then be brought out of anesthesia without opiates (because they repress breathing), then lets talk.
I can't believe that somebody on this forum chided Letterman for not demanding that the HOF induct Zevon into the institution!??? Did the individual hear the compliment that Zevon gave Dave in the video. I am sure Warren appreciated Dave far more for his support in his career and friendship than any stupid nomination to a institution!!!
"You better get your dry cleaning done on special". My god, imagine near death and having that attitude. I just love this interview. Warren Zevon is just different.
It's KAT Harper... my system had a migraine. But I can't watch the last few moments of this video without wanting to hang my head and cry....or throw something. For Warren Zevon to be able to say, humbly and accurately, that Dave was the best friend his music ever had, is a pathetic commentary on the musical taste of the public at large. Not that Dave shouldn't be deeply appreciated for his support of WZ's work, but the fact that ONE person fit that description boggles my mind. To me, for so many people NOT to have heard of WZ is tantamount to saying they've never heard of Shakespeare, or Mozart. Has the greater portion of the music-loving public been raised by wolves? When I listen to some of what passes for music these days, I'm strongly inclined to think so. But, y'know, when all it takes is a pretty face and a great rack to qualify a woman as a "musician", or gangsta posturing, a man, the industry is definitely swirling down the sewer. It's tragic when even Andy Warhol's " Fifteen minutes" is fourteen minutes, fifty-eight seconds longer than their so-called "talent" deserves. Warren, come back! The shit has hit the fan for real! Only these days, they're calling it "music"!
AMAZING interview. I mean I'm a huge fan of both of these men and Dave is one of the best talk show hosts out there. And while he goes along during the interview without breaking you can tell there are moments that he's having a very hard time doing his job. I think just the sombre tone (especially for a Letterman interview) and the way Dave seems to relish every word Zevon says shows there is a very deeply rooted compassion between these two men. Which makes for the best of interviews.
Hi Jerome...I gave a damn...been posting too. Love his song "Keep Me In Your Heart". Lost the love of my life last Nov. 7 and this song gives a lot of comfort. Thanks Warren, miss ya man! Nancy
Peritonial Mesothelioma is a horrible way to die, but it isn't releated to cigarettes. You can smoke all you want and it won't make any difference vis a vis this cancer. Of course, all the other forms of lung cancer all are related to smoking, but the reason that the lawyers go looking for the meso cases is because there are no other common causes than asbestos, and so it's easy proof. They can't say, well, you'd have gotten this anyway because you smoked..
I’m here because I’m reading a book by Lee Lipsebthal . The book is called “enjoy every sandwich”. If you like the meaning behind what this man is talking about, you’ll like the book. Highly recommended!
Warren: "...it's lung cancer that's spread." Dave: "That's tough" Warren: "Well, it means you'd better get your dry cleaning done on special." I only with that when my time comes I can face death with as much grace, humility and a sense of humor.
"I might have made a tactical error and not gone to a physician in 20 years." The sad reality is pleural mesothelioma is extremely hard to diagnose until the disease is advanced. Its a very rare disease and many doctors dont recognized it when first presented and even imaging is difficult in the early stages. BTW, As of April 2024, the average mesothelioma settlement amount was between $1 million and $1.4 million, while the average trial verdict award was around $2.4 million.
