What about for a woman? My 15 pounder is too heavy for her, we've established that. But I can get her either a 10lb or a 7lb sledgehammer. What do people advise?
This is really strange to me, because about a month ago I started working out after a long period of being primarily sedentary, with the only heavy thing that wasn't immediately necessary I could find; an old sledgehammer. I started doing stuff like the curl here, and the splitting wood thing, just because I could really feel it in my biceps and shoulders. Kinda weird how you can accidentally discover something that's been around for so long, and it turns out you totally weren't special or anything. Just kinda blows my mind.
I found the steel mace after using an old sledge hammer too. I decided to search and see if anybody's written a sledge hammer workout and I then found the steel mace
I have Kshyatriya ancestry. In India our ancestors used to fight. The main principle of mace work out was to improve endurance of back, arm and fore arm. Training with mace makes handling of sword easier as you will find it light compared to mace. My great grandfather fought Britishers with 12 kg sword on horse back. The Akhada system is very popular in Rural North India. These trainings give strength, agility simultaneously.
A 12 kilo or 26.455 pound sword? No. G-Grampa may have been embellishing to impress his grandkids, or he was bad at estimating weights, but that's like an extra thick crowbar, not a sword.

Motivating!! I have been a shoveler for years and seeing you good sir use similar motions to inspire strength... well I feel that when I have shown other the art of the shovel I have also shown them strength now. your talents and videos are a true gift to this generation and those to come.
Great video! Great Gamma did also tons of Hindu push ups and Hindu squats and wrestled for hours every day. Even for todays standards this guy had a incredible training pensum. Interesting for me was, that because of this amount of training they cared also about recovery and resd somewhere, that he got massaged every day. A cool lifestyle! ;-)

A sledgehammer will work fine for all these exercises, you dont need a dedicated mace. That said, I just sprang for an Onnit mace and it's great. The thicker bar is good for your grip strength, and the longer handle lets you vary the challenge. It's also knurled like a barbell, very useful. Either way, these exercises are going to make you sweat while building functional strength.
Thank you for acknowledging the source so honestly. Though id like to say that wootz steel is from India. So, there has been a long tradition of fighting with metal maces. It’s simply cheaper to use a stick with a weight for the common village akhada/ open air gym.
I love these things. With in 6 weeks of training my shoulders are no longer rounded and no more forward head posture. Got a 15lb now looking at getting at 25lb

looking forward to my 10lb and 20lb gadas, as well as 5lb clubs I ordered off Amazon... going to incorporate it into my yoga practice. thx for your inspiration.
You may wish to consider that if you do a sledge to tire exercises. you may injure yourself if you angle the hammer incorrectly. The reason for the mace is to avoid the injury. Ijuries just suck..
Awesome vid from an awesome dude with an awesome mustache. Imma subscribing you! Now, i'm gonna start training with my gada in front of my house and let all the passers-by bask in my overflowing manliness!!

I appreciate this video. Looking to incorporate these types of work outs and ditch typical gym gear that only targets specific muscles. This seems like an all rounder which would save me time
Great video! Two notes on pronunciation if you're interested. The Gada/Gadha (mace) is pronounced "guh-tha," with the "tha" sounding heavy, like a "dha". Pehlwan (Strongman/Wrestler) is "pail-wahn".
@@hayvantv4210 We were upto the Saudis... you'll find sanskrit words in Poland and Russia also...no surprise, once you consider that Cholas were upto the Filipino islands until the last few hundred years
On the 360's one of the ONNIT trainers coach Vaughn says to point your index finger of the base hand and let the mace fall toward that direction. Also, I think postioning your hands when the mace is vertical above the belly button area is better technically. Not trying to hate, I loved the video!
Good for sword figthing practice as well whether it be one handed or two handed, this exercises the same muscles that your body uses to swing a sword effectively.
Back then they didn't had steel. Really bruv.... come to New Delhi... and i will show you a pillar which didn't rusted for more than 2000 years. (So not only they had steel but galvanizing process of it was also really dope).
Good video Brett. I would add that the same thing could be accomplished with a splitting maul - and get some firewood up at the same time!! ;-) Thanks for sharing.
You can work the same muscles using a barbell with light weights clamped on one end. I use a hand forged spring steel battle axe by starfire swords, which weighs about 12 lbs.
Even though there is controversy on this subjects, I read that chinese and russian historians have recorded that alexander lost the war against northern india and later died from its injuries but the romans of the time didnt want his legacy to be over against a relatively unknown king from india and hence his historians changed the story somewhat that alexander supposedly won but gave away the land which cost him so much to win which sorta doesnt make any sense.
Hi, i like very much your idea and videos, thx for what You doing, but, i have question: if i can`t buy mace in Poland can i use bar/barbells to mace training? with weigths for example... I try to do some training with dumbbell in similar way You showed (dumbbell with only on side equipped in weights), i think it increases my strength. I try to combine mace and kettlebells exercises Thx again for Your work, great respect
Does anyone know of a webpage that illustrates the force generated by a Mace/Gada of various weights, possibly due to increasing torque? The basic swing appears to be what they call the 10:00-2:00 O'Clock. I can push heavy dumbbells so I am trying to accurately select a specific size Mace. I know that will a kettelbell you cannot get "jacked up".
FWIW.. a lot of these exercises can be performed with the "bodybars" you find in the gym. While the weight is not distributed exactly the same, its a great way to try out the exercises and see if they might be right for you. And.. I've done some of these with a long handle sledge in my garage. Works great, but be careful.

If I want to be properly building up some strength and muscle but don't exactly have time to spend hours swinging this thing around, what kind of sets would you recommend? Obviously I can't just use only this but more in a "get the most bang for my buck" kind of way.
RU-vid - Onnit Mace. Follow the Warrior Maker workout. I just got my onnit mace in the mail today. Amazing work out. But I did it in a tabata style 20 seconds of work, 10 secs of rest. Repeat 8 times.
You don't have to spend hours to feel it and get benefits if you are using the right weights. It is fun to swing that bad boy around and slay your inner demons. I make up my own routines and just have fun with it.
Yeah, I get you. When I'd made the comment it was more that I'm used to something more regimented than "just swing this thing around for a while" so I was wondering if I should do a certain amount of reps or what.
Onnit has model workouts on their website with # of reps and sets, that may be a good place for you to start. Or you can treat the exercises as you would regular wt. training and build your own workout plan. Try doing 10-20 reps + 3 sets of each exercise and modify from their. That should get you started.
