I don't mean to be rude, but that is not correct. Ares was not of special importance to the spartans. Athena was the patron of both Athens AND Sparta, as well as many other city states. In the Iliad, which as far as we know was not written by an athenian, Ares is described as the most hated of gods by Zeus, his father, and gets personally beaten up by Athena. The "Athena good, Ares bad"-trope is much older than the conflict between Athens and Sparta.

@@nojlexa I stand partially corrected. I will concede that, upon further investigation, Ares doesn't appear to be the patron god of Sparta. But most of the evidence I can find suggests they chiefly worshiped Apollo and Artemis, rather than Athena. As for the Illiad not being written by an athenian, that does appear to be true, however it also appears to have been written over 500 years after classical athens was properly founded and roughly 3000 years after the area was first settled, plenty of time for biases to have become commonplace and considered fact. If you look at Ares' behaviour, he actually appears to be one of the more noble olympians (not a high bar to clear and he's very far from perfect but he's up there compared to his peers). He's fiercely protective of the women of his family and appears to be one of the few olympians who actively disdains r*pe (it's concerning that that is a significant character trait, greek myth is f*cked up). All in all, I used a bad example but there were very much biases present in greek mythology based on who wrote the myths down.
