WARS OR HANDS OF TIME (1966) by The Masters Apprentices (Best Quality)

Classic 'B' side to sixties single 'Undecided' by aussie rock band, the Masters Apprentices. This was one of those songs that grew to be a bit of a cult favourite. I loved both sides of that classic single.
Both songs were written by rhythm guitarist and band leader, Mick Bower who wrote all those classic early Masters songs such as 'Buried and Dead', 'Living in a Child's Dream' and 'Tired of Just Wandering'. He was a great songwriter who sadly left after their third single due to ill health. The band went on to continued success with a different line up, although with Jim Keays still on vocals. Jim is still singing today. Good on him.
As there is no film clip that I know of to this song, I have put together a slideshow video for this song, using mostly images of that early lineup Keays, Bower etc. Check out the newly remastered Masters Apprentices album by Aztec Music, containing all those early Mick Bower songs.
Comments are appreciated.

The Masters were pioneers of rock in this country. Grew up with their music in the 60’s ❤ Their music was way ahead of its time.

"A man called Michael Bower has a songwriting credit on ‘Last Post On The Bugle’, because it really does borrow very heavily from his band The Masters Apprentices’ song ‘War Or Hands Of Time’. “A simple act of theft,” said Pete about it. The Libs version slays it though, obviously, because thrills don’t come any sloppier than Doherty rambling away about how he “heard them say, “Oh that boy’s no different today, except in every single way”. He’s barely in control of his own thoughts, and it’s exciting." (Tom Howard on NME)

Tremolo....crispy deep fried snare rolls...etereal lyrics of soldiers staring at heaven as warriors pine to left behinds...and a lyrical guitar lead that actually expresses something. My god, there's a reason this is one of the all time OZzy trks. Between this and the Missing Links' "driving..", you've got a textbook display of masterful freakbeat brother. And hey, it's really nice to see the vintage pics - paints a great picture a world away from Canada

Great to hear Bill. When I have seen Jim over the years, he never did the early singles which are my favourites. He tended to focus on the later heavier Masters stuff (except for Living in a Child's Dream which he did with Russell Morris and Darryl Cotton -RIP). Will keep an eye out for him in Qld where I live.

I don't think that many of us Americans remember that Australia fought alongside us in Vietnam, which is probably what inspired this song...
@blueycarlton
@blueycarlton 6 лет назад
I think we have fought alongside the US in all of America's wars, but one - Grenada, since WW1. In WW1 the US first fought at the battle of Le Hamel on July 04 1918 under Australian command of General John Monash. His tactics were used for the first time and later copied by the Germans in WW2 they called it "blitzkrieg", the battle, as predicted by Monash was over in 90 minutes with minimal allied casualties.

IMO "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and it was far far superior to their puerile A-side "Of La Di Ob La Da", plus many other hits from that era from the Beatles, CCR etc compete in that same space of best B-sides.
