This was one of the greatest limited-overs finals of all time, international contests included, and it was sealed, fittingly enough, by Warwickshire's captain and man for the big occasion, Dermot Reeve, who had previously played integral roles for Sussex in the 1986 final and Warwickshire in 1989. This time it was his uncompromising acceleration at the end of what had seemed an impossible run-chase that sealed the deal, as Sussex's total of 321 for 6 -- the highest ever recorded in a one-day final -- was hunted down by five wickets from the very last ball of the game.

I was twenty three at the time and remember Dermot Reeve, playing against his former team. The theme tune always impresses me as a cricket fan!

Best game I've ever watched. Speight hitting Munton into the pavilion early on, Lenham's cover drives and brilliant batting by Asif Din and Dermot Reeves. 320 off 60 overs seemed like a huge score then!

Two great captains - remember watching this, thanks for the upload. Dermot Reeve one of my cricket heroes. David Smith looking very classy and Speight attacking upfront Jason Roy like!

I was there, aged 19, and it was an astonishing game. Warwickshire were only ahead in 2 points in the game - a few minutes in when Bill Athey was out, and then the very last ball when Twose only needed to get one run to win. Between those two Sussex absolutely dominated. But Warwickshire never gave up, and there were some awesome performances, particularly Asif Din who scored the fastest century in NatWest final history, despite only hitting 5 boundaries. Every ball, worked into a gap for runs. And then Dermot Reeve in the last over against Franklin Stephenson! I can still picture every shot in my minds eye. Just amazing.

Reeve looked dead on his feet in that last over, but somehow found the energy to run like that. Amazing!

I always thought David Smith was a sort of left handed Graham Gooch. Very similar playing style. Unlucky that injuries at inopportune times prevented him building a Test career.

I loved county cricket back then, my favorite team was Warwickshire, I used to keep a close tabs on all the players, I reall feel sorry for players like Ed Giddons and Dominick Ostler, Dominic reminded me of Carl Hooper not in style but in terms of potential, he could of been a good player but never showed his true skills, Ed was unlucky, I remember his first test for England and his last test vs the windies in 1999.I remember in commentary Sir Ian Botham kept saying he (Ed) bowled with rat power.

Thanks so much. I enjoyed it immensely. Any more county cricket videos you have would be very much appreciated. Do you have any Sunday League matches from the 94 and 95 seasons?

Any hundred in a Lord's final is to be applauded, but Smith took 162 balls to get there. I think had he batted at the same rate as his teammates who made 221 from the other 198 balls Sussex would have been out of sight and near to 400. Asif Din also scored a hundred, but got there in only 103 balls. That's the match, right there. 10 overs quicker!

If he batted at the same rate as Athey and Wells , he still wouldn't be at 100 l now

I thought the 1985 Essex/Notts Final was great but this surpassed even that. Sussex thought they’d won the match with that huge total and their fielding didn’t do them any favours.

Ive only just noticed those thieving little toerags racing on at the end to steal whatever they can get their hands on. Some little Herbert stole Reeve's bat.
