In this brief video essay, I explain the logical incoherence of Alpha's (and the Whisperers') world-view or philosophy. Because my viewers wanted me to. #thewalkingdead #alpha #negan
Alpha's way of governing was doomed to fail. 1. You can only rule by fear for so long. Those who fear you now will eventually stop being afraid and rise up against you. Either that, or you'll start losing followers because they'll find ways to splinter off from you. 2. Survival of the fittest eventually demands challengers. At some point, someone who is stronger will challenge you for the chance to rule and defeat you. 3. Mob rule. Alpha's legions will only follow her as long as they believe she's able to provide safety, security, shelter, and food for the masses. As soon as any of those were no longer supplied, the masses would have turned on her. Numbers 1 & 2 did happen. A young Whisper left the group. So did Alpha's daughter. Neagan took over Alpha's group and evenually killed her and Beta. And what happened to the rest of the Whiperers? They were all destroyed because they were leaderless.
@silentj624 The bulk of the Whispered were killed by walkers. It's very unlikely anyone from that group will rise up to take charge of anything. They're either 💀 or lone wolves, surviving on their own now.
Anytime I see the whispers I can only imagine the stench coming off them walking around with walker skin and guts on them and constantly being surrounded by rotten corpses 😂😂😂
There is realistically no way that the whisperers exsistance even remotely makes sense. Think back to when Rick and Glen put guts all over them in order to escape Atlanta. It rained and it unmasked their scent to the walkers and they were almost immidiately exposed to the walkers, and you expect me to believe that the whisperers were able to live among them for years without being exposed? With no guts? Just masks and a half assed zombie walk? Her needing her daughter back to badly while also being ok with a baby being left for walkers is a huge plot hole. How they even got to that point with the baby wouldn't even make any sense. You're saying that the baby would even be able to live with them at all, and the baby didn't cry amongst them before they even got to hilltop?
I read a book a while back about the zombie apocalypse. They had chapters showing how the world adapted to zombies. One example was everyone locked their bedroom doors with a combination lock so if anyone died in their sleep, they didn't eat the whole household
@@nathanielslattery7683 it's been a while. Since I read it. I believe it was Rot and Ruin. I'll warn you, the writing isn't the best. The world building was good but I didn't like the characters much. I could be remembering wrong though because it's been about a decade since I read it
also feel like Alpha had this psycho in her even before the world ended, you can kind of notice in the flashbacks, it's just the end of the world just set her psycho self take over her
I wish we could see alphas reaction to an army of commonwealth or CRM soldiers approaching her. It's so annoying how arrogant she was all because the characters didn't have guns or advanced enough weapons to wipe them out. They were down to mostly bows and arrows due to supplies running out. But if alpha had to negotiate with the CRM or commonwealth I feel like she'd be shaken in her boots cause they have more than enough bullets to kill her and her erd a hundred times
But Alpha doesn't need to go against them. Whisperers just need to live as usual and in future generations the Commonwealth will fall because they are just creating a weak society like when the apocalypsis first began.
@@taurusbull8276 Daryl was bluffing. At that time the coalition almost had no firearms left hence why they were mostly using bows, meleeweapons and Alpha knew that. Otherwise she wouldn't have approached Hilltop in the first place
you could use pepper spray or pepper ball guns against the whisperers and take them out easy but they could use pepper spray well against you too since they want you to turn
I really love your Shane Walsh videos, I have a unbiased opinion on Shane, unlike some who totally hate him or totally love him. You should really make more of Shane Walsh videos, i am not sure what topic it could be about, but nonetheless I’ll still watch em
Captain Gold is simply brilliant, and I don't just mean because of his content. It's refreshing to come across someone on social media who makes arguments from pure INTELLIGENCE and LOGIC and not from his FEELINGS.
They could have lured walkers into the quarry and set them on fire and within a couple years there would be no more walkers in Virginia or surrounding states 😅
honetsly I never even consider alpha to be in the right mind at anything at all ever since whisperers became a thing in the walking dead, I find the whole thing dumb as heck, just think about it, ''oh no, zombies have taken over the world! I know what to do, let's all wear zombie skins and acting like them like it's halloween!''
The Walking Dead 2200; Everyone stabs the recently departed in the head as a religious tradition. People decide it's just a silly tradition and get lax, and it seems like there's no problem at first. Those silly ancestors must have been making things up as usual, we moderns are so wise! But soon enough...
If a leader has double standards/hypocritical it will deteriorate morale within the group. Group members will hate the leader for being hypocritical and be less likely to follow them.
One thing that came to my mind is, when you’re hungry, your stomach will eventually start growing and will alert the walkers to your position. So, how the hell do they manage to maintain their health while living with the undead, sure, they look like them and can blend in, but you’re not entirely dead, if it rains, it will wash whatever blood off you and they will start to sense you near them. The fact that these whisperers lived this long in the apocalypse is ridiculous, they would have been gunned down instantly by any armed group. In the show we see people killing walkers because it’s addicting and fun, I’m surprised they didn’t show up earlier in the show, like when negan and Rick were at war with each other, considering how much noise they made and how many walkers were alerted to their positions. Except the only time we see them is when everyone is using primitive/medieval weaponry because most of the guns were destroyed by Eugene’s faulty bullets. Arguably one of the worst villains we seen in the show
Whole faction was the dumbest thing ever introduced into the whole franchise. Just to make them remotely threatening, they had to break all logic to justify them somehow kidnapping a bunch of people out from under everyone's noses. I'm still annoyed that they threw away the the Highwaymen almost as soon as they were introduced as well in the same episode. A small faction that was actually kind of cool and would have helped naturally progress the show. Show was so absolutely bankrupt by this point in it's history.
Alpha is one of my favorite characters in the entire series - her story and the whisperers illustrate an aspect of humanity that definitely would exist. They have given up and adapted to the new world by ironically becoming apart of it and seek to destroy and feed off of those who hope to survive - a genius plot element and interesting arc, despite you thinking they are stupid. You completely skip and do not address what makes them so tragic and interesting and I usually like all your videos, but calling this a chore and refusing to go into alphas back story or moral dilemmas based on trauma kind of sucks, especially when you have a GIANT video about how amazing and complicated Shane was LOL
Watching the "Tales of the Walking Dead" mini-series episode about Alpha's origins highlighted how really stupid Alpha was. When she was on that steamboat with the other survivors that got ambushed and she took out some of the marauders, instead of continuing to help save the other people of the community she pulls her daughter into the water and sacrifices the rest of the community to be slaughtered. And before that, instead of actually talking to Brooke the leader about her suspicions about Billy, which were confirmed later when he was amongst the marauders, she took it upon herself to deal with the situation that she then botched by not getting other people to help her out in capturing Billy. The latter situation highlighted that even though Dee/Alpha was right about Billy her ego denied the opportunity to stop him from causing greater harm to the steamboat community. And though Brooke did invite Billy into the community Brooke's point about Dee/Alpha's selfishness costing the community was proven right with the massacre of almost everyone on the boat.
I'd like to see a character in a show which reached the conclusion that civilisation is a blip that shows up every now and again with a lot of promises which always come to creating hell on earth, without using that position to justify creating hell on earth. Most people who understand that are in no way violent as doing so would go against their own philosophy, but it all seems to get tied back to the unibomber whenever people think about the ideas. It might be a timescale problem for the characters. They're talking about ideas that span 2 million years of activity on earth, but applying it in their own life in a radical way is a poor choice when you only live for 70 or so years. Properly applied it encourages living parallel to civilisation rather than as a part of it, not becoming the instrument of its demise (In fact it's a long running assertion that people who can see through a society should reach in to render aid to those who cannot see). Living parallel to it lets someone escape from a lot of the negative aspects during their own lifetime, trying to take on those 10 thousands of years timescales yourself is folly.
Alpha WANTED to live a peaceful decent life but She and her people were out there for a very long time, They had no choice but to live primitive lives until They could find something better, Rick's group would have devolved into such state had They not found Alexandria, The Hiltop, The kingdom, The Commonwealth and The Crm, Look at Them in s5 and how They were slowly devolving into being primitive, They ate dogs for God's sake, How else do you want the whisperers to survive, Alpha like Rick Grimes was just doing the best She can and She just happened to meet Rick's People who were fucking with Her when She was more than reasonable, the only thing that I didn't like about Them was the fact that Alpha was allowing Beta to mistreat Negan at the time, but seeing as how He betrayed Them, Beta was right not to trust Him and mistreat Him also Alpha was right to condone it
disagree. the best she could? no she settled on a condition where she could apply the most control over her people. if they had established better shelter and food source people would start getting ideas that they could lead themselves or at least counter her orders. that is why they rejected comfort of the old world because with less emphasis on immediate survival there was no bandwidth to think about the stupidity of of their situation and perhaps revolt against leadership. alpha and rick were different types of autocrats where rick would relinquish control IF there was a better option for his people where alpha sought to just perpetuate her control regardless if relinquishing it was better for her people.
No. Alpha considered civilization to be a fairytale. She indoctrinated her people into believing this. When it was clearly false. She didn’t do her best to improve their well-being, she did her best to keep her power and cult ideology running. Big difference. How do I want them to survive? Idk start a community that doesn’t live like animals? Lol
@@Staysick17 Rick also wasn't the original leader of Alexandria, Negan wasn't the original leader of the sanctuary and the governor wasn't the original leader of Woodbury but they had people they needed to keep alive and they had to basically give it their all, alpha was that way, too
@@Terry99-r3m the flaw in your argument is that all those leaders that assumed leadership did so to benefit themselves and make sure that their power would be supreme. the governor never had to come in conflict with any other group but secretly this dude was keeping walkers alive and feeding them for his own gain. Negan took peoples wives for himself and forced people into labor when he clearly could have not done that. he made people bow to him...how is this doing his best? alpha was so bad that she kept he people outside i the elements including babies? why? because it is clear that to do so would enforce the idea that there is no turning back and the only future was the cult. it does not matter if they started the group it is what they did once they took control.
while i agree with everything you said, the scenes where survivors think they're just dealing with walkers and then one dodges and stabs them are awesome.
she's disturbed women, even after she knew Lydia has fully switched side she wanted Lydia dead so she can be a walker next to her, se was the most evil one on the whole show, samantha mortan was truly amazing as her,
says use tear gas in a world were that level of weaponry is no were to be seen. says "shoot" them in the knees and they will scream causing walkers to converge on them, in a world were walkers are drawn to the loudest noise. which compared to a gun shot, a scream is not loud. we also saw the whispers show incredible pain resistance so getting shot might not cause them to scream.
There are nuanced differences, but in short - anti-natalism leads directly to pro-mortalism. At least when you realize David Benatar is dead wrong about the difference between a life worth starting and a life worth continuing.
Bro you should definetely make was governor right? Imho he was 90% and rick s5 is way worse than governor. Because rick kills fucking everyone, not like governor (only saving weak people). You can see the pattern of rick taking most important character traits, that he killed (or gone) like dale, shane, governor, man in terminus, CARL (but not Negan and also not lori😂)
The Governor was never bad, He is just a man who had to commit unspeakable atrocities to save the world and to save his daughter, He lost his family and everyone, He couldn't let that happen to his people, He only killed Them after They showed that They are not worth protecting by defying his orders and being pussies just like Martinez said, Shumpert died offscreen due to walkers, but Martinez ditched The Governor and He met Him again, He saw that Martinez is not an effective leader and so He had to kill Him, He had to keep people alive, Rick was always a good man until He kidnapped Lydia and abused Her
I’ll eventually get to it. He’s sorta boring from an ethical perspective though, so I have to figure out a more interesting topic for him. He didn’t really have an ideology. Phillip was a broken man turned into sociopathic narcissist. Everything he did was to stay in power. Disagree? He mowed his own attack force down lol And no, I’m not scared of doing an essay on the Governor lol why would I?
@@TheRealCaptainGold just becouse he moved down his people doesn't mean it's failure, if that was Negan and his people opposed him he'd kill 10x more people, they got killed becouse they just simple couldn't get there shit done.
@@TheRealCaptainGold i think he didnt want power. He used it in his goals. Woodbury people to kill rick. Martinez people to kill rick. But the only thing i dont know is that why he needed to be a leader of woodbury at the first place
Imo. Alpha, may have wanted to take control of the communities. That she intimidated. She was a jealous, insecure, abused & abusive person. Therefore she would rather destroy than build. Lots of baggage to unpack with that character. Some Arleen Wournos like energy. Perhaps Alphas (fictional) backstory could have been the same as Arleen. Metaphor, Always on the outside of society looking in.
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ABOUT 2016 “THE CELL” by Stephen King, AND IF CIVILIZATION WAS DOOMED, BEING TRANSFORMED OR COULD CIVILIZATION AS WE KNOW IT STILL BE SAVED? I have pondered on this question since 2016 and find myself torn between civilization being completely doomed, yet maybe the rare places on earth where cell phone technology (the national radio quiet zone, dead zones, certain tribes, desolate places and dead zones throughout the world) hasn’t touched, could possibly grow to conquer the “entity” in cell phone technology. And if this is possible, would these non technologically advanced humans transform civilization to look like the Amish? Or something else? Thanks so much!
No, I’m just going to assume that you’re all bad because of your lifestyle not like mines. Because of some stuff that happened on a boat they didn’t have anything to do with you. All that line of thinking is going to do cause more blood shed and it did. Lydia, that entirely on her. If she’s not down with the whisper lifestyle. Then why try to force it on her
Alpha could have been right but I expect they are not really thriving in the wilds. Lets say you send a group of guards out in walker suits and the come back at night for treatments you can have a smaller group so the turn over is almost 0. Alpha was on the right track with we all fall, America was very different from 1776 to 1876 and 1976 but she made the error of thinking we gotta go hard reset when reality says take what works throw out what fails
@@TheRealCaptainGold Why is he narcissist? Have you read my comment? If you are able to do video about absoulte trash of human like alpha, then you can sure do one on Governor, dude was just trying to reason with people, he wasn't powerhungry, if he was then why he said that- he doesn't know what he is doing? In 3x13, or why he would try get out of that camp in season 4? If he had to stay it was best idea to be leader himself becouse martinez thinks he can share crown which means incompetncy. Why Governor would attack rick when he didn't want to attck him the first place? If rick didn't attack him he just wouldn't retaliate like his people wanted. He gave 3 chances for rick to get out of that prison in there talk, he declined them all even tho he knew Governor wouldn't just leave if his people are beside him, so it was obvious he would attack. He cared about his people otherwise he wouldn't beat milton when he dangered them, and caused 8 people to die
