PoetryInMotion91 this is so crazy i had an asian young woman run into the street as i was walking towards a supermarket i was so shocked! She was almost killed by a car she did not even look before she ran into the street, no one knows how hurtful and how it makes people feel, thus this is how people become victims if crimes they run from the wrong people. I had a small shopping bag i walk with a came before my eye surgical process i was a person who saw through shadow, it was just a painful experience. I think about this young woman and wonder where she was taught to run into the street if you see an older black woman with a limp? I wonder what goes through these peoples mind that everyone who happens to be black is bad and dangerous, a criminal but nothing prepared me for things like this i had something else but it this happens so much it is shameful and just painful!!
Just imagine what life was like for our grand parents and great grands. No Video, no representation. Who would believe you. Where you going... What you doing... BOY! Half of us would have just died.
It not just the black it all poor people,,, now the black people working in restaurants throw the white people food together service it to us ,, it old or nasty looking,,, so it's both side not just black people
Tina Diggs I’m sure they did fire them . I shop at Talbots on line and have gone in their store I did not have any problems but them again I’m white . What a shame this has got to stop and stop now we should all hit them up on Twitter and let them know how we feel about this ! That’s all it takes is for a group to protest and let them know I will not ever shop their again.

I lived in Detroit all my life, except for my years at college. Gross Pointe is racist as hell! In fact all the Pointes are. St Clare Shores is as well along with East Point. This happens all the time. The clerk just picked the wrong Black woman this time. And I know she didn’t look like she was stealing anything!
I love it when they claim that it was an isolated incident. Whoever believes that is either very naive or intentionally trying to avoid blame. Usually, shoplifting doesn't occur until a person tries to leave the building. The fact that the police approached her and searched her bag indicates that this is a normal procedure.

When they get caught doing what they always 'RACIAL PROFILE', you tend to hear the many excuses. As an attorney i hope finds the time file a defamation of character lawsuit. And the employee who called the police be immediately terminated.
Filing a defamation law suit would have been frivolous, and it would have been thrown out because she was not defamed. She experienced some embarrassment, no doubt, and a few minutes of being inconvenienced, which could potentially be considered harrassment. However, her reputation was not damaged, nor did she suffer any financial loss as a result.

I mess around and opt for the email receipt sometimes. I thought of being questioned by the cops if they were called on me and how it would look bad for me with only an electronic receipt.

It exactly reflects your store’s lack of culture actually! Whenever you racially profiled someone, you don’t lose one customer, you lose all the potential customers who are disgusted by your behavior.
It used to happen to me a lot as a teenager due to my heavy metal attire. It was mostly cops assuming I had substances in my possession. I did not, as I was not into drugs. So it even goes beyond race at times. My group was even jumped by a group of 20 somethings once, and we were 16 year old kids who never bothered anybody. When the cop arrived to take the report (a black woman), she took one look at us and said, "I'm sure yous did something to deserve it".

Talbot's has a history... I live in Shreveport Louisiana... And while in the mall some years back I had a white employee meet me at the threshold saying the didn't carry items in "YOUR SIZE" further stating " you should leave bc nothing fits you".. my response was.. who said I was shopping for myself.. as it was my mom's birthday and I was browsing around trying to decide what I wanted to get.... Ultimately I settled on diamonds from Zales.. but the employees there were quite nasty.. and I stayed as long as I wanted in Talbot's left when I was ready.
This happened to me several times while shopping!! They assume that you can’t afford to buy anything because you’re Black. It pisses you off and you just want to hurt someone. I got an attorney and went to court. This is embarrassing
So they accused someone of stealing before she even left the store, and then they take her personal information "for the record"? Apparently everyone is welcome to live their life, as long as they accept that doing so may be criminalized at any time!

"Black Tax" is figure of speech denoting the fact that if you are a black professional employee or business owner then you have to endure extra scrutiny or hardship to accomplish the same goals that other people accomplish simply based on their social class of race.
Extra scrutiny? Like getting into medical school and ivy league campuses with lower test scores? Please. I don't know you nor do I want to know any coloreds but the statistical fact of the matter is that my taxes are likely supporting you rather than the other way 'round. But as you mention, you might have been given a position you didn't earn on your own merit but instead based on your skin color. Lots of colored federal govt employees that way.

Please, enlighten the world with how every measure of decent humanity falls short in groups of people with dark skin. Statistics cannot be biased or racist by definition. As a former retail manager I can tell you the employee's 1st question should have been 'Do you have your receipt?'. Not calling the police without cause. You can't assume the customer has stolen something to exchange for something to get it free which does happen. One simple question would have prevented this embarrassing moment. The employee is either not properly trained or their personal bias is coming through here which happens all too often and is probably the case here. On the other hand you can't have someone like this working in your store. It will kill your business. We may have come far in this country but not far enough to stop this kind of profiling which is shameful..
The only reason Talbot's apologized was because she was well connected in the government and they fear the government. like we all fear the government. That exact same scenario happens everyday in that department store and people's rights are violated every day exactly the same way because of the color of their skin. The cops have no problem with it the department store has no problem with it and that government has no problem with it if it's you the person. But how dare you do this to somebody that is high up in the government.
if I were black and in a position of influence, I would get a list of businesses that routinely target minorities and set up a avoid this business list if you are a minority due to their harassment of minority shoppers that are targeted as possible thieves based on nothing but race. one person won't have much impact but a whole race of people avoiding a business because of profiling will make a big difference. when military personnel was profiled in the 70s, post commanders made the towns off-limits to all personnel and only allowed off-post personnel to leave the post. within 6 months, the local government promised to stop the harassment. slowly the post commander restored off-post privilege to all soldiers and things went well after that. the effect of 7,000 soldiers and family makes a big dent in local business profits and sales when many customers avoid them.
Smh this is sooo horrible I remember I went to a very well known makeup store and me and a friend of mine walked into the bathroom because her daughter had to pee and I can guarantee you that the employees saw us walk back without stopping to look at anything once she got out the bathroom we looked around and I noticed we were being followed. I was like uh ok??? So once we checked out and paid, which we spent a good amount of money of certain makeup products once we tried to walk out the same lady that checked us out stopped us and asked to check out purses. I was taken back and asked what the reason was and all she said was that it was suspicious that we went to the bathroom and she went through our purses not only did she not find ANY items from the store but she was making racist remarks as she was looking through our stuff. Once she was done I asked if we were free to leave and she told us that we weren’t allowed back. EVEN THO WE DIDNT STEAL, GAVE PERMISSION TO LOOK THROUGH OUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS, THEY MADE FUN OF US AND OUR RACE WE WERE TOLD NOT TO COME BACK... for what??? I still don’t know once we left we were pulling off and we got stopped to police and we explained to the cops that we didn’t take anything and that they had already searched our things they still proceeded to search our cars without permission or a warrant. I have never ever in my life felt as humiliated as I did on that day and I will never forget about it. Ugh it pisses me off talking about it still Ismh

Honestly, the employees have no reason to call the cops. They’re almost never to blame for shoplifting in general. I guess Talbots employees taking their jobs hella seriously

Hello fellow RU-vid posters. Similar kind of thing happened to me in 2013 only it was at a Ross discount store! I hate to shop period. Only I really needed clothes since I have a sparse wardrobe. I went into the dressing room then when I came out I was accused of stealing a pair of pants that I gave to the fitting room lady ( use that term loosely) who threw all of the clothes customers handed to her in one big heap! She had a gestapo looking security guard waiting then interrogating me until finally I calmly walked over to the fitting rm lady's pile of mess to retrieve the pants I had tried on earlier ( which she hadn't bothered to hang up on the rack btw) . This was in Bellevue WA. Ross store!
It's sad. Cause i use to work 4 them. Here n NC. And the store manager was white and did that same thing. I had a white couple say some racial things to me. And she tell me not to worry about. I quit.
What a shame this happened to her. When he first told them she had some returns they should have just asked her to keep the bag behind the counter and this would have saved her the humiliation , what a shame.
My mom loves talbots i remember the catalogues going back to when I was 5 years old. It is sad the actual employees in situations like these do not publicly apologize. I really just don't even want to shop anywhere anymore. It's no wonder amazon is becoming the primary choice for people they dont have to deal with racist assholes. It seem these racist people would rather be out of jobs (when stores close down) then to treat each customer respectfully.
The best way for that Clothing Store to Apologize is to fire that racist employee POINT BLINK PERIOD. I am sick of these Racist BASTARDS. Why do black people love to see these things happen to other black people? Isn't that the dream, for us to walk around without being hyper conscious of the many negative things that can be associated with blackness? Not having to worry about staying "in our place"? I must be missing something. :/
I am a black man and yesterday I got profiled by an African woman at a major grocery store. As soon as I walked in, it was like this woman saw a ghost! Her eyes locked on me and her head followed me down the aisle. I turned back and asked this woman what the hell is wrong with her. I buy from this store all the time (damn near daily since I run a business) and the white employees and all others don't even bat and eye when I come into the store. To them, I'm just a regular shopper like everyone else. For some reason this rooty poot African woman, instead of restocking the shelves like she was hired to do, wants to play security and follow the only "black" guy in the store around like I was going to steal something from Massa! This, less than a store clerk, woman is new and I have been patronizing this store for at least 12 years. No offense to my African sisters and brothers but this pissed me off!
Wow! If it was anyone and if this situation had not been made public, Talbots would of swept it under the carpet and not said anything. The bottom line is if you accuse someone of shop lifting and involve security or the police you better make certain that is the case. And if you are not certain and you make these false accusations then there should be consequences for your inability to handle the situation more carefully thank you!
I am sorry she had that as experience but I am sure that as a prosecutor, she has sent a lot of innocent people to prison making the same mistake of judging them inappropriately. Maybe now it is time for her to look into her own conscience.
Stop giving these companies your money. When I was 22 I walked into Talbot's and was told by an employee that they think what I needed they did not carry. I said I was looking for the cardigan in the store in my size that was not available in the color sold out online. So I handed the employee the five other items I picked up and walked out. They will never get a dime out of me of my family ever again.
I had a same experience when I was in early 20's. I was embarrassed and shaken up but I told them it's ok to the manager even though they didn't seem sincere when they apologized because I was young and didn't know any better but looking back that was racial profiling!!

A person is not supposed to be accused of shoplifting unless an employee saw them take something and kept a line of sight on them the rest of the time they were on the premises, just in case they put the item back, their excuse could be that they were just carrying it in their pocket, purse, etc. It’s not theft until you attempt to leave the store with the item. Ridiculous.

Happens at all these stupid retail stores. I was racially profiled at a Ross discount store in 2013 in of all places a fitting room. There was an inept fitting room lady who had an unorganized + messy rack sitting behind her. You know the rack where once you leave the fitting room you give the clothes over to the fitting room attendant & she is supposed to hang them up? It turns out she threw the clothes under a mound of other clothes that she didn't bother to even hang up. Oh , then she goes to get the Loss prevention guy to come intimidated me & he's dressed like a storm trooper! Retailers when will you learn Caucasians steal too.
I've said it before and I'll say it again and again. Instead of dealing with possible ethnic. Profiling we need to show support for our communities. And start are own business and treat every person. With the respect they deserve. Because Green is the color that makers right? So let's just respect each other working is the true answer. Not separated.

The problem isn't her, it's always everyone who wears her complexion. Thing is, it isn't that we don't know these things, but we would rather spend large sums for the utility a brand gives us, and suffer the embarrassment than support our own businesses.
Scary to think what happened to those who do not know what to do or are not lawyers and are racially profiled! Probably very bad things happen to them.
As long as there are cultural differences associated with color, this will be a thing. It seems like this is rare in places like France, where the culture is identical in blacks and whites.
