I feel like Madonna has always suffered from everything… we all knew ageism was gonna happen. She is so strong to rise above it. She is still paving the way for pop girlies.
I think the poster here meant criticism in general to Madonna , she can’t sing , she’s too controversial, she’s not talented blah blah - never got criticism for her song writing though
Smash Hits magazine was the first to slam Madonna's age, at 29! Calling her Grandma. Pre-Like a Prayer. 1988. Many Artist who came after Madonna were allowed to get older and still be played. Nobody talks about Talor Swift being over 30! Kylie and Madonna need to make an amazing disco song about woman with Cher on backing vocals.
Exactly. And the people that couldn't believe she was still going after 40 when most pop females were sent to the bone yard at 30. Now no one bat's an eye when popstars hit 40 or even 50. Jlo was playing a stripper at 50 in Hustlers. That would have been UNHEARD of back in the day. Madonna is the one as usual trailblazing for those behind her to not get nearly as much shit as she has gotten.
The haters in the media were always trying to end Madonna’s career. Once she was in her 30s they started with the ageist crap as they thought that would end a female pop star. Taylor is still peddling her bratty sounding music to huge success at 34, with no one calling her too old.
In my opinion, this has gotten worse, not better. I was a teen in the 80s when Kylie and Madonna were huge stars. But I also remember many older artists getting play in video rotations and on the radio for their new singles. Aretha, Cher, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, Paul McCartney, David Bowie… , Roy Orbison, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross… they were all older artists but I definitely remember them getting airplay… and if the music was good, we didn’t care how old they were. So in that time span, ageism has gotten worse, not better.
You're right. On the positive side, these 2 pop trailblazers are creating a conversation about this and are helping shift the narrative. Madonna and Kylie's current efforts will benefit the longevity of many younger pop stars are coming up behind them
Kate Bush has had a total of 1 world tour in 1979 whiles Madonna has had 12 her last one ended in 2024. Madonna has always been "on stage" and she's been harshly judged because she refused to settle for less and quietly disappear.
Imagine a song with Kylie, Madonna & Cher...we all could die in peace afterwards! BTW, Madonna is so powerful that she's restored the proud of raising our national flag once again here in Brazil!
And I think the 3 of them could easily sell out that tour, they could make a mint, just look at divas live, people lived for Aretha, Tina Turner, Cher and Elton.
I just turned 41 and as soon as I hit 40 I have now heard the word “old” slung my way numerous times. So are we allowed to LISTEN to music since everyone is supposed to go home and stop performing. So do I have to find a connection with Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo until they age? I have no connection to Gen Z so we need our older stars
Not enough talk about this. I don’t care about her plastic surgery, I hope she continues swinging her bits around until well into her eighties, she’s earned it!
Madonna's and Kylie's legacies must be respected by radio and other media, their life paths and challenges they've overcome, and career longevity itself (in such an unstable business as showbiz), their contributions to culture and art. They are still artistically fertile, but radio stations try too hard to stay "relevant", that's why they are arrogant towards older artists and decide to exclude them from air, which is unfair. People who exclude older artists from air, suffocate their careers, radio DJs are shaping public taste by their own tastelessness.
You did miss that Padam Padam was on radio 1 playlist (c) I think for about 3 weeks after it went top 10. That means it would have been played a minimum of 5 times a week during peak programming
They felt totally FORCED into this. Absolutely appalling behaviour by Radio 1 - just dreadful - totally behind the curve. That track was a hit despite Radio 1 not because of Radio 1.
@@divatalk9011yeah that felt like a really hurtful slap in the face , it’s one thing to not playlist an older artist but to deliberately skip and single her out in the chart countdown is brutal , it’s not like they were being asked to play Mr blobby
Madonna is not too old to perform. She is, however, too old to be gyrating on stage and doing "dance moves" like she did in her younger years. If you look at her last couple of tours, she barely moved/danced, walked so slowly on stage, and let her dancers do 90% of the choreography. She has become the Norma Desmond of our time. Look it up, kids. LOL!
BBC radio has a big issue of moving older artists tracks to BBC Radio 2, treating them as sort of legacy artists, even though Kylie Minogue’s recent album was a hit with younger demographics. How long will it be before Lady Gaga and Beyonce will start getting their new tracks played on Radio 2?
The issue with Vadge is that she dresses in a very, very sexual way. Sean Connery didnt run around in a throng. Monica Bellucci is someone who is still considered sexy, but she doesnt flaunt her body the way Vadge does. If the average age of someone listening to Radio 1 is 19 years old, trust me they do not want to hear Vadge, they are into younger artists.
"vadge" was always about controversy. It's her brand. She doesn't give a fuck about anybody and that's so great about her. If she cared what people think about her she would retire 30 years ago.
It's ridiculous blacklisting an artist because of their age. Especially someone as iconic as Madonna whose music remains just as contemporary as it was years ago.
It's the whole MTV vs VH1 thing all over again or here in Canada it was MuchMusic vs MuchMoreMusic... One played Madonna, Kylie and Dannii, other did not...
The truth is that pop and rock stars cannot and do not sustain the quality and energy of the music they made in their youth when they become older. Trends and sounds change and older stars sound inauthentic when trying to emulate a current trend or sound. And younger audiences want their own pop/rock stars and not their moms and dads.
Of course BBC Radio 1 (and many other stations worldwide) have been ageist toward both Kylie and Madonna. They both should have had more top 40 hits in the last decade but it’s borderline impossible to do that when your music isn’t being playlisted on key stations, streamed by the masses or promoted properly. Kylie got lucky with Padam crossing over into meme territory and TikTok latching onto it. Ditto Madonna with her ‘Popular’ collab - they couldn’t ignore her then because The Weeknd is a regular figure on their playlists lol. Radio One have been called out on this ridiculous practice so many times over the past decade & there’s always some lame ‘excuse’ thrown back by one of their directors or playlist ‘curators’. I can’t see it changing any time soon sadly - more of their younger and popular artists need to speak on it (before they too are relegated to the trash pile once they turn 30). Imo, one of the biggest insults Radio One ever levelled - it was toward Madonna, but Kylie can be applied here too - was that tracks are selected by ‘musical merit’. Implying their song quality wasn’t up to the ‘standard’ they’d put on any of the Radio One playlists. Ugh. But mumble rap & some hideous 2 minute nonsensical song (created merely to become a TikTok trend) is ok? Musical merit my foot, Radio One just makes it up as they go, while desperately chasing those $$$ like a leach from the impressionable youth market they’re after. Ugh. But it’s a bit of a wider issue than age or Madonna & Kylie too. Radio One are also inherently sexist toward many female artists in general. A number of UK artists like Rita Ora & Ellie Goulding have been bypassed on the station with their solo work over the past 5 years. In fact an article released last year by The Mirror highlighted that both Rita and Ellie were featured on Radio One when they have a collaboration & it’s *usually* with a male artist - eg like Rita’s ‘Lonely Together’ with Avicii and Ellie’s ‘Miracle’ with Calvin Harris. Rita was only 32 & Ellie was 36 at the time that article was published. And Radio One do the same with Pink, Shakira & Katy Perry too. Rather transparent wouldn’t you say? And they’ll use people like Beyonce or Taylor Swift as proud examples showing how they can’t be ageist when their music is played - yeah, cause it would be a tad hard to avoid playlisting their songs (lest they draw the wrath of those fan bases). In short: it’s a mess & those radio stations are trash.
the fact of the matter is, Madonna's recent output has NOT been good. Her albums crash out of the charts after a week or two. As a fan, I couldn't even tell you what her last actual single was because the Madame X era was so bodged. Videos were released for songs that weren't singles, and none of those songs were objectively any good. Sorry, but they weren't. Take God Control. Who wants to listen to a song where she sounds like her mouth was frozen after a visit to the dentist? She may have had artistic reasons for doing so, but sorry, nobody wants to listen to that. From her last 3 studio albums, you could produce one album of good content. The songs from her early albums were crafted by songwriters and musicians. Now, everything is done with a producer. And if you disagree about how bad her output has been, look at her last few tours, which were mostly to support an album. Songs from the PREVIOUS album never made it to the setlist while she wheeled out La Isla Bonita and Like A Prayer for the umpteenth time. Why? Because they're crowd pleasers. Why? Because they are objectively good songs. Nobody was begging to hear Gimme All Your Luvin' or Revolver or Give It 2 Me.
The slurred singing style that Madonna has adopted on some recent songs is baffling to me. Is she trying to copy someone younger who sings in that awful way?
Yes, I agree that her recent albums haven't been up to her usual standard. Even so, the singles deserved to be played and the public could decided if they liked it or not. She was just written off without the songs being allowed to speak for themselves.
That is clearly discriminatory. Why is this not garnering national attention ? We need to stop this nonsense. It’s not a crime to age, it’s a part of life. Those that are doing it will get old too, if they are lucky enough to make to 65.
So the thing is... it doesn't matter what they think. I don't follow Madonna but I loosely follow Kylie. As long as they are making good music, and releasing good music and people are enjoying the music (and they are) .. It doesn't matter what BBC thinks because the records are still selling like hot cakes. They did the same thing to Cher. Thankfully we are re-entering an age where looks and age are becoming second to music and art, which is really how it should be.
Rightly or wrongly, many people, particularly the young, will see Kylie as being old, in just the same way as they do with Madonna. At 56, Kylie is old enough to be a grandmother.
One time, back in ‘04 I think, me and my brother were talking about Madonna, and one of our older distant cousins overheard us. He quipped “who? Madonna? She’s as old as my grandma!”. It still makes me laugh when I think about it. I understand Madonna’s frustration with agism as a woman in pop. But there are certain juvenile shenanigans that you no longer get a pass for when you’re past a certain age. In art or in life. I mean, she doesn’t even seem to have matured as a person tbh. That probably could easily happen to anyone when you lived most of your life in a different reality than everyone else.
@@JB-pl1iu I know. For some reason she gave granny vibes, even though she was merely middle aged. I remember how me and my brother used to joke that she looked like an athletic grandma when she danced in MATM with Britney lol
It’s a young person’s radio station they wasn’t upset when older artists where not played years ago now they are complaining over themselves your old! It’s life we are all old live with it! Your best years are over
Sports Illustrated Swim Suit edition just had Gale King & Martha Stuart on the cover; I think we've come a long way with ageism. & Kylie is eternal, people still love her. The problem with Madonna is she hasn't had a good album since RAY OF LIGHT...her music IS irrelevant-unlike Kylie keeps coming out with bangers. & Madonna has jacked her face up with horrible plastic surgery...unlike Kylie who clearly has had work done but it's been very WELL done & tasteful. This is a Madonna problem, not an ageism problem.
@@divatalk9011 I mean, Erotica nearly sank her career & that is a piece of art. Nobody even remembers Bedtime Stories & that is a very unique album that I still love. If you like her new stuff you are totally entitled to. I would say up till Ray Madonna MADE the trend, after that she chased the trend...That's how it seems to me personally.
Women according to the old slimy men who control the entertainment industry largely throw away all women at 28 like some Logan's Run nightmare... Even American Dad! made fun of that with Roger's Tasha Flunchen parody character of Gisele Bundchen being dumped on her 28th Birthday from her modelling agency like no doubt so many real world models have been in the past and sadly probably will be unless the culture of the industry changes...
@divatalk9011 I asked someone a few years ago if they liked Madonna. They were 20 years old. They replied, why would I listen to music by someone that my mother listened too. Madonna no longer makes the music 20 year old listen to often. She is a talented lady, but no longer queen of the charts. The same happens men. How often do you hear 63 year old mem in the charts.
People said the same thing about Kylie until Tik Tok helped Padam bypass traditional medium and become viral online. When singers are muted by corporations the justification is they’re no longer relevant to younger demographics. It’s a sneaky slight of hand to permit not playing them in the first place
Ah, please. Every job prefers younger people, the older you get it gets harder in everything. Madonna and Kylie haven’t released any quality in many years. Madonna made herself ridiculous with her behaviour and overdone plastic surgeries, Kylie’s last two albums were piece of shit , overly autotuned robotic sounding dreadfulness. Of course their record companies put enough money into their promotion to make it commercially successful. BBC did play Kylie, she did promotion there many times, they played Kim Wilde and other older artists over the years.
A terrible person based on what? I've followed her entire career and continually find her to be an extraordinary human constantly standing up marginalized groups along with her endless philanthropic work. How many people are you helping?
