If there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching Kibler, the intermediate-step discovers from this quest often impact the game more than the reward itself
That's actually true for every questline. Sometimes even just the first step already makes up for the 1 mana you invested on turn 1, then you get an extra booster on step 2 and then a wincon on 3. It's almost a mistake not to play the quests given the efficiency per mana spent. Hence why several of them are kinda broken.
Nowadays the way cost reduction works with the quest is that it counts the actual mana you spend. E.g. if you draw Mutanus with a corrupted insight and play him for 5, it will count as a 5, and will not count as a 7. Back on release the system was a bit bugged, and a case I remember was that playing an 8-cost card that has been reduced by 1 counted for BOTH the 7 and 8-cost step, completing that whole step with a single card. Sadly it got patched, it's not like that fringe case made the card any good.
For those who don't have Alura (such as dusting her when she was nerfed), try Grand Archivist. The extra cost doesn't tend to matter much, plus it's hilarious.
@@RealityRogue I played it for a while some years ago when it had Ragnaros, Y'Shaarj and Lich King just because they were cool cards, the current version of big priest just seems so bland and uninteresting when it comes to the minions they run, seems like something that you'd get bored of playing in like 3 games
@@RealityRogue so far it's one of the hardest matchups i've seen for the pirate quest warrior. Even with juggernaut out, the minions it summons and keeps bringing back cost far too much to keep pounding through since pirate decks need to do their dmg with minions for the most part edit: I don't play hunter much but I assume they're also pretty hard for quest hunter as well
I always said the quest depends on the meta. I always knew the questline for priest was busted. I got to legend 2 months in a row with questline priest in standard. The best part is the quest becomes more busted the slower the meta. Having a way to just insta kill your opponent, heal, card draw/generation, and have board presence is nasty.
Standard meta is usually slower than wild in terms of powerlevels. You'll find a ton of aggro decks in wild, where as you'll find more balanced control decks in standard. Not to say either archetype doesn't exist in either. Just from my own experience.
my quest priest deck building was similar, but i included the Elekk mount another pull from high abyss Aulura to have a better chance going into pirates warrior, token druid, elemental shaman and most of the board-based aggro matchups. its basically a win-con sometimes. i did not include Galakrond in the deck and filled it with lower curve, having nearly no cards to be able to complete the final stage is very bad, but surviving is more important so i have a lot of board competing minions instead to get a better chance to survive (decks like even warlock and token druid are nearly impossible to beat since we dont have other spells to play against them, fun and interactive eh?)

@@JustaBigMan you can also play Archivist on the same turn as Xyrella. But you have to go second to get the coin… and generate two more coins from Licensed Adventurer
You could equally just play Shadow Visions and discover the reward the turn you play Xyrella - thus still casting the shard the following turn. The only real benefit to this version is if you Xyrella Alura coin all in one turn. You can also run 2 shadow visions as opposed to 1 Alura
Yeah, I love priest, but I'm not going to lie, I did not like this quest-line (from a design stand point, not power level). It feels like it forces priest into a tempo heavy deck and gives them card draw (which is fine, most priest lists in Standard win the most games when they push tempo while keeping enough value generation to win in the late game), but simultaneously while enabling a tempo-heavy playstyle, they shut out any slow value decks chance of winning. So many control deck options get straight murdered by this quest reward's existence. Dead Man's Hand Warrior (I know, it's painful to play against), but it never wins against this deck, ever. Any kind of fatigue deck (bar quest-line warlock) straight loses. Any deck that's too slow (like big priest, or old quest priest)? Always loses. You pretty much have to combo it out every time, because the discovers give you a good shot against midrange, and priest having really efficient taunts and heals make it solid against aggro (relatively, probably sub 50% w/r, but still). Yet it loses to combo every time. I don't know, I've come back to HS after a bit of a break, and it seems like the Stormwind set was designed specifically to keep control standard decks C tier. Ignite, Juggernaut from questline warrior, burn mage, questline warlock, hell even questline hunter, this priest deck forever lurking if combo loses favor- it's like every single archetype even if it isn't pushed enough to be anything above B tier exists to make sure control in any form never does. I get a lot of players want ~10 minute games they can jam on lunch break, but as an old collegiate competitor... I just miss control. :(
well, the deck probably sucks. It doesn't make much sense to add a slow wincon that requires a very specific design to a deck that already has it's own (and faster) wincon. Raza priest is supposed to be fast and use lots of cheap cards to OTK, quest just makes it awkward and bricky.
Damn, if you could have given the enemy in your first game just one more turn to see if they would actually have gotten the winning card... This will keep me awake xD Also it would have been like the most amazing bamboozle to get bitten in the ass by your own win condition ^^ I think I would have thrown the round on purpose just to witness it.
