As a kid watching the movies, that was my exact reaction. I didn't know he had a name or was in anyway special, I just thought he was an Uruk-hai and it really helped me understand the difference between Uruk-hai and Orcs. He set the standard. Uruk-hai are tall, beefy, fearless and badass, they feel like they're a race bred specifically for war. Orcs however feel like a normal albiet evil race, as natural to middle-earth as humans, elves and the like.

Despite what most might say about Uruk Hai, Orcs, and Goblins (by claiming that they are all alike), I do see differences. Goblins as we’ve seen time and time again have more cat like eyes in terms of their pupils while also being weak to the sunlights. Orcs are larger in size, albeit stocky, and look more like a twisted/corrupted elf. Uruk Hai are Orcs crossed with men and are of larger more athletic builds, often having less pointed ears and sporting darker skin. Then of course you got Half Trolls like that commander who lead the attack on Minas Tirith, who was part orc, part troll. Even further you then dip into the various types of trolls and the Ologs.

Its sad because actually its far better than that in the book, boromir kills many many orcs and uruks, driving them back several times, until the orcs flee and the uruk bring up their archers and fire several vollies at boromir killing him with many arrows. Ugluk in the book claims that "we the fighting uruk-hai defeated the great warrior". hinting at the orcs being afraid of boromir and not daring to face him.

My favourite addition around those scenes is before the attack when Aragorn meets Frodo at the top of Amon Hen and Aragorn sees the ring in Frodo's hands and he is visibly affected by it, yet he passes the test and instead wraps Frodo's own hands around it. That scene is so heroic and yet so gentle, a great scene to show Aragorn's character.

I believe boromirs death is pretty important as in the films, Aragorn is very unconfident as a leader over the fact he believes he’s weak for having isildurs blood. The dramatic scene allows boromir to talk to him and show him what it means to have pride in who you are and where you come from. Boromir who gave himself always for his city even if he knows men are flawed. I feel like it gave Aragorn newfound courage in the movies and it’s the beginning of him returning to minas tirith as not just some ranger, but really as the heir to the throne, come to correct what isildur failed in
@BapeRuLLZ
@BapeRuLLZ 2 года назад
I also love that scene! The aspect I don't like in the movies is how they made the race of Men seem weak, easily corruptible and shameful mainly through the added scene when Elrond talks about how Isildur (and thus the entire race of Men) 'failed', when he refused to destroy the ring and Aragorn is ashamed of that fact. In the books the Isildur in Mount Doom scene never happens, because back then nobody really knew what the ring exactly was (or at least Isildur had no idea) and he just kept it as an heirloom of their victory over Sauron. And even when Isildur started to realize what the ring was, he decided to go to Elrond to seek his council about what to do with the ring (Tolkien added this somewhere, I think maybe in a letter), but he was killed on the way at the Gladden Fields. This makes Men in the books much more proud and noble and they are not ashamed of "Isildur's Bane", they are just afraid of what could the thing be that even brought the death of their badass leader.
@erickluviano981
@erickluviano981 2 года назад
@@BapeRuLLZ yeah I’m actually reading the books rn I’m at return if the king. And I know right, in the book Aragorn is literally saying “BEHOLD THE SWORD OF ELENDIL, BEHOLD THE BLADE THAT WAS BROKEN REFORGED” literally every chance he gets when he comes to Rohan 😂 so it’s very different from the movie. I get they wanted him to undergo some development from shy ,unconfident to the leader he was born to be. But they really did screw all men overall. Even in the two towers faramir decides at first to take the ring to go for but I was surprised when I read he never does that in the book. He flat out tells Frodo I don’t need it. I would take it and then we would all fall. Just adding to how wiser faramir was than boromir.

@joshscafidi8174 2 года назад
@@BapeRuLLZ maybe i am projecting the books on to the movie slightly, but i dont think that elronds emotions were completely from that one incident. he had the misfortune of watching the kingdom of arnor split and fail, the witchking wage wars on his doorstep, the kingdom of gondor get smaller and smaller, the men of the south and east fall further into darkness, and the line of numenor kings be reduced to a relatively small pack of rangers roaming the wild. he didnt have much to be positive about regarding men.
@sigrim1974
@sigrim1974 2 года назад
@@erickluviano981 Not only that, i think one of the biggest flaws in the movie was when Faramir took Frodo to Osciliath and that the witch king saw Frodo and the ring....and then 2 days later when he is moving out his troops he feels the ring is close, and yet he leaves out thinking the ring cant be there....instead of putting 1+1 and search the area....

@mankyscotchgit4986 2 года назад
@@BapeRuLLZ I prefer it that way, I like that Aragorn in the films is a much more vulnerable and humble character, he actually develops over the course of the story and has to overcome something. In the books he's ready-made, everything's resolved already and he's immensely proud of his bloodline (which isn't a good look imo).
@TheNathanAndLaura
@TheNathanAndLaura 2 года назад
Lurtz was a great addition to the movies. Without a “big bad” for the heroes to overcome, the end of the first movie, though let of a trilogy, would have really lacked that sense of accomplishment that an audience really craves for the heroes. Having just lost Gandalf, then Boromir, there needed to be a cathartic release for the audience - somebody that Aragorn could show his skills against, and that the audience could see the heroes score some kind of victory against the antagonists. They couldn’t kill off Sauron, or Saruman, or even any of the other names orcs from the books, as each of them still had a role to fulfil in the next movie. So, adding in a non-canon orc leader to fight, and lose to Aragorn makes absolute sense to push the story, develop tension, and give the audience the emotional release after such a tense lead up to the end of the movie. If Boromir had been discovered dying, with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli having missed the fight entirely, audiences would have walked away feeling massively cheated. What works in books doesn’t always work in movies. Lurtz is great.

PRE-WATCH OPINION: Yes, I love the inclusion of characters among the enemy ranks. Tolkein had a few of his own of course but while Ugluk, Shagrat and Gorbag give us a peek into orc inter tribal culture and military structure, Lutz in the films gives us a window into the industry of Saruman and provides An answer to the question "where do orcs come from?" While serving as a decent final villain for movie 1

@@donaldwantz4071 the movie made its own explanation and it worked for the proposes of the films story. It's gross, foul, vile and revolting. Perfect for orcs. The fact that tolkein doesn't specify This in the books is neither here nor there because he doesn't really give us a concrete final Canon answer on orc reproduction and changed his mind multiple times on the subject, so the movie version is in my opinion Very effective shorthand for the audience. @donaldwantz4071
@donaldwantz4071 2 года назад
@@seanpoore2428 The movie didn't need to explain the process at all. There was no need for it, and Tolkien always maintained that Morgoth didn't have the ability to create life from nothing, he could only corrupt existing life forms. Growing orcs isn't like planting seeds in a garden, unless of course that is how elves reproduce -- the race from which orcs originated. There is no way Saruman is more powerful than Morgoth in the creation of life.

@@donaldwantz4071 I always thought of the mud as a sort of cloning pit, not Creating life as much as replicating it in a twisted corrupt form (probably using genetic material/bodies from elves and, in the case of uruks, men) and it was a fun harmless addition that you can choose to incorporate into your head canon or not. Also you only see Saruman growing uruk-hai. I think the importance of Lurtz really ties into Boromir's importance and portrayal. I think considering Boromir is portrayed as the the weak link right out of the gate in the movies (with regards to the ring) that having him be the only member of the fellowship to even look tempted by the ring AND fall to regular orcs when every other character fends off hordes effortlessly would have been a bit much. Boromir needed that final end boss in Lurtz to show that he did have some incredible strength against a huge threat. Having Aragorn take out Lurtz right after in a great fight showed the caliber of fighter that it would need to take down someone like Boromir. It's a satisfying ending to the movie. Also I guess Lurtz just looks cool haha.

Good or bad Lurtz looked creepy as hell. I saw the movies before reading the books. That allowed me to not compare them. But even when I read the books I still had no complaints. Tolkien’s writing style is super detailed and that could translate to very slow possibly boring on the big screen, at least for enough of the audience to hinder the films performance. Especially because in the book we have Bolg, the son of Azog, who is the leader of orcs. There was no need to add both Azog and Bolg in the film. And if they didn't, they would actually benefit from making the orc-dwarf conflict multigenerational. Not to mention that it makes Dain's claim to the throne of Erebor more sensible. In the film, he is just some Thorin's cousin who comes in to help and later takes the throne. In the book, Dain is the one to kill Azog and thus avenge the death of the previous king, Thorin's grandfather.

There is no valid reason to say Lurtz was a bad addition to the movie outside of purity fanaticism. As one of the first Uruk-Hai, he gives the movie the power to show us Saruman's creations and what the wizard was doing while the Fellowship began the quest. He also gives us a face to call the villain of the first of the three, someone that needs to be bested by our heroes at the climax. To add onto that, he gives emotion to Boromir's death at Amon Hen, a pivotal point in the trilogy.

Lurtz' addition made sense considering Fellowship had to stand on its own as a film. Ugluk could have filled his role and carried it into Two Towers but having him (who I believe it was in the books) kill Boromir then run off only to get iced by the Rohirrim offscreen (or observed from Merry & Pippin's limited perspective) would have weakened the climax of Fellowship while not really providing a worthwhile payoff in Two Towers. For this approach to have made sense from a cinematic perspective they'd likely have had to alter the story in far more egregious ways.

Boromir dying offscreen in the book always felt so wrong. Especially since he is the only member of the fellowship who actually dies and especially when comparing it to Gandalf's heroic sacrifice. It would be like if we skipped the confrontation between Gandalf and Balrog and just caught up with the Fellowship leaving Moria and mourning loss of Gandalf. It's like what? Where is this missing piece of story that should be here. I like Lurtz. It gave a face and sense to what Saruman can do. Any man would die to a swarm of orcs. But showing that Saruman can creat such monster that can kill Boromir and even give Aragorn run for his money was quite scary. Gandalf dies (and is resurrected by Eru Ilúvatar), and in the Appendices we are told of the deaths of Aragorn, Merry, and Pippin. @@donavonhoward114 Well, I might give you "greatest fantasy battle". Though it's also obvious from watching the movie that nobody in the entire production really knows much about the military. Apparently the Elves, the greatest archers EVER, have never learned volley fire. That little 15' to 20' hole in the wall should have been choked with the bodies of dead orcs within moments. The point I was really making was that by adding the elves the story diminishes the accomplishments of the men in surviving the assault. Also, the elves (many of whom would be older/more experienced than Legolas) died awfully easily. Just sayin'.

I mean, hypothetically speaking, how would they have played out having Ugluk being the character fighting Boromir/Aragorn instead of Lurtz? If Ugluk had been slain by Aragorn at the end of The Fellowship, then Ugluk wouldn’t have been around to lead the Orcs to Saruman at the beginning of The Two Towers (which obviously was the cannon part of the story). Now, let’s say they decided *not* to have Ugluk killed off and instead just badly wounded and escaped, then the (failed) heroic fight between Aragron and “Ugluk” wouldn’t have had as much of an emotional impact on the viewers. Also, it would have weakened Aragorn’s character. Idk. It looks like there needed to be an ultimate evil Orc leader to dispose of-so to speak-in order to keep Ugluk in the storyline longer (in addition to the *many* other incredible reasons not mentioned here). So adding in Lurtz was a necessary idea, in my opinion.

Lurtz felt like an addition that made sense to me as opposed to say Azog or Tauriel because we needed an active villain other than Saruman, especially one to kill at the end of the film However, as much as I like the Uruk Captain cookie-cutter, I love Ugluk in both films and books and felt like we could've gotten more out of using him (as he was the captain of that Uruk party)

I think Lurtz and the Battle also help inject some immediate understanding in Boromir's redemption. Seeing him defend Merry and Pippen and even sacrifice himself gives a solid understanding of his being a better person then the man who came after Frodo alone. That Boromir realizes he made a mistake and makes personal amends. The book kinda sorta plays it off like an unlikable character just died, so convenience? The Battle really helps us come around to Boromir and mourn his death and see him as one of the good guys, instead of a would-be failed villain who got hit with a ton of Karma. Seeing it makes all the difference.

Although Ugluk wasn't given as much of a role in the following movie, at least we know he could handle his draught! On a separate note, I have thought of a request since I have started re-watching the movies a couple days ago. Concerning the Fellowship of the Ring, I was wondering how Gandalf got his staff back after escaping Isengard after Saruman snatched it during their duel. I loved Lurtz being added, to me he really did the job in show casing just the sheer threat of the Uruk-Hai if they were fully developed. Lurtz being one of the first Uruks to be pulled out had a slight advantage over most of his kind in future and that was actually being developed properly and trained unlike his future brothers who were more hastily developed. Saruman tells us the Uruks are meant to be so much more superior to Orcs and even stronger than Men but we are never given the chance to see that until the 2nd film. Lurtz is what gave us the clue and showed off just how badass, terrifying and resilient the Uruks could be, Aragorn wins but he doesn't half struggle and when you see those final moments, lacking an arm, impaled through the chest and still coming at Aragorn your thinking. 'Holy shii and there's gonna be an army of these guys?' Keep in mind I saw the films first and then read the books. So I'm bound to be biased.

In the book there's the bodies of about 20 orcs around Boromir. A few killed by the hobbits but still you could say Boromir killed 15 before being riddled with arrows. That doesn't support the oh "even great warriors die to orcs" its more that he died because he was overwhelmed.

I never really saw it as a character being added, just a random orc given more importance. He doesn't have any specific chsractetization and isn't even given a name in thr movie. Honestly to me a better debate is whether it ess a good idea to give Aragorn a climactic duel in the movie.

I like Aragorn's duel. Like, a film has to have a plot, excitement, drama. The book ends just with Frodo and Sam going off in the boat, there aren't even any orcs there, and we don't even see Boromir's death until the start of TT. It's very anticlimactic and a strange choice on Tolkien's part, which would have translated very badly to film.

Even if I saw the movie first twenty years ago before I read the book, I still say that it was a good decision to add Lurtz as a personal confrontation between our heroes and villians is needed for the movie and you can't have Sauron or Saruman doing it, cuz they weren't present at this point in the books (due to a misunderstanding, Sauron is a flaming eye spirit form stuck on Barad-dûr and therefore unable to go out and fight and doing so wouldn't justify him to go out and kill Boromir but not the rest of the Fellowship and then run like a coward, and like stated in the video Saruman doesn't leave Isengard in the book, though later Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli saw a white figure the night before they go into Fangorn, which Gandalf denies it was him and speculates it MIGHT be Saruman). It is much cooler having a fight between Aragorn and Lurtz and the villian slain rather than either not happening or Lurtz (or Uglúk run like a coward, though sometimes villians run away to fight another day can work if there'll be another confrontation).

Unlike the books the movies needed Lurtz to both act as a focal point for the Uruk hai and also to provide a finale antagonist. I never thought Lurtz being a hero Uruk meant he was superior to the rest in much of a significant way. He personified how strong they all were. It was the ease with which the heros dispatched the other uruk hai that diminished them comparatively.
