Oh, come on, enthusiasm is one thing, but... look you'll never find a bigger Deadhead than me. First show, Roanoke VA '74. I play guitar and working with a Dead song book is how I learned. I've played in bands and covered Dead tunes. * They rehearsed. A LOT. * Apparently, you've never heard of jazz, wherein improvisation is highly prized. * There are shitloads of world class guitarists. * Genre matters in music. The Dead were very distinctive, arguably unique. They covered lots of other material and always made it their own. The Dead were actually, truly, awesome, they could play jazz (Shakedown), classical (Terrapin Station is a sixteen minute suite), R&B, blues, country... but nobody does everything. Nobody is the very best in lots of genres. There are definitely bands I like just as much, and, quite often, better for the material (e. g., Roxy Music). ***** It's art, it's not a contest. Granted, there's better and worse, but past a certain level of proficiency, it's really the material and practice time. Mastering theory helps with improvisation, which is why jazz can be the hardest genre, arguably --- BUT if you don't play an instrument, it's really hard to explain - uh, yes, it's actually Zen. If you have a decent ear and a modicum of talent, then, at some point, brain, ears and hands click. You're establishing a direct ear-hand connection. I've studied a lot, but when I play, it's like an athlete, I just *move.* I'm glad you like the Dead.

One of Jerry’s goals as a musician was to experiment with different genres until he took music itself to a new place. That’s why the Dead jammed so much and that’s why they took mind-expanding substances. Jerry definitely succeeded in this mission-and he never sold out. Long live Jerry! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

1989 and the MiDi eara is a prime example. Lucky for us he didn't give a sh!t about what his critics had to say ... as you said, he never sold out to expanding his creativity. I'd say that neither did the band. Bralove would agree.

Didn't think much of Grateful Dead when I was young, but as a guitar player I now put Garcia in my top 5. I can watch Garcia videos for hours and not think that he's recycling the same licks and moves over and over. Such a deep, deep musical understanding. It's not like he had to think on his feet, he just reacted to those around him and the notes flowed out. Fortunately there is a mountain of archived performances for us to enjoy.

He was that great - much more than a superb musician with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He is the very spirit personified of whatever is muddy river country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn't only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he'll ever know. There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There's no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep.”

I think Jerry is one of the very few guitar players who have legions of fans willing to listen to his long solos who have never picked up an instrument. Usually, these types of players have a huge musician following, like jazz players etc.

Jerry's voice was *vulnerable* which is what makes it sound so true, why it really makes you FEEL. Jerry's playing has that same quality: like his heart's on his hands and you're hearing/seeing something you shouldn't, but he's allowing you to. The risks he takes, it's something beyond bravery- it's pure magic. God bless this man, hearing Jerry when I was 16 was the whole reason I began playing the guitar again, and it has brought me more joy than I could ever express. Thank you Jerry ❤️

The key is finding your own tone that touches a lot of people. You can't finding it without looking for it. Very few have a gift to do that. They also create a whole new genre that's their own. Jerry had that gift.

He learned and mastered the essential skill what every musician needs to learn-- not to just play the notes, but to play the space between the notes. That's what made his sound so flowing and organic, versus the mechanic stiff sound.

@Other One Thanx, Agreed I was lucky, seen Pig a few times, Janis a few too, Doors, so many more, but you should check out Paul Butterfield with Mike Bloomfield, East West recorded in the early 60's, Mike was amazing, he was a pioneer on guitar, East West was recorded in a studio more like a garage, yet still one of the best rock albums of all time. You've probably already know about it, but others should hear this masterpiece,, Thanx again..

According to those close to him, Jerry never put his instruments down. He was extremely talented with everything from guitars to banjos and anything stringed, really. Read Big Steve Parish's book "Home Before Daylight" for the stories. Steve knew Jerry better than anyone.

I saw every major group since 1969, I was always searching for something more than just bands playing the same show night after night, than it happened in 1982 in Las Vegas, I saw the dead play I found what i was searching 4, they always took me on a musical ride. Jerry G. Is one of the greatest guitarists &musician of the 20th century, I listen to all types of music every day.i am still mystified by Jerry &the dead musician ship to this day,they weren't the best @ what they did they where the only one's to do what they did. Now others have developed their product useing the deads bluprint right down to the t. Small wonder these bands are on the very top of industry. Phish and Dave mathews are the best examples of this the only difference is their sound, all else is identical including the results

I'm an old man now and have always been a musician -- I was lucky to see the dead about 20 times. I know lots of people are fans of the space thing. What I so dearly loved was his marvelous wandering melody. Everything I do musically is because of him in some way.

I play guitar and when you see the compositions this man came up with AND his ability to play them a dozen different ways including solos you begin to understand he is one of the best ever player and musician. 1000 years from now people will still be studying and playing grateful dead lines and singing Robert hunter lyrics because they are masterpieces on par with Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.

He had an emotional connection to his playing, which was unusual. He used his solos as an extension of his voice. He brought a feeling to his playing that was between jazz and bluegrass. Nobody could find the subtlety in the melodies like him.

Garcia was simply the best guitar player ever. He had a gift and developed it to the fullest....to the benefit of millions. His playing transcended time & space and despite lifes challenges I feel extremely lucky that our lives overlapped a bit and I got to hear him play a few times. You can argue all you want about Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, but what sets them apart from almost every other rock band in history is their courage and their repertoire - and the two support each other. The Dead were not afraid to take chances. That much should be obvious. What is frequently overlooked is the fact that their active repertoire during any given tour absolutely dwarfed that of most other bands. Also, the scope of their music - blues, folk, old-timey, rock classics, space jams, country - was something other musicians couldn't come close to equaling. The bottom line is the Dead were the quintessential American band.

He only sold himself out, but never the music. He played past the time when he actually wanted to leave the band. He had multiple people to support. He obviously needed rest. One of the most creative players I have ever seen. Saw them a few times in the 70s and 80s . Saw them in 74 at Des Moines county fair. No opening act, started at 1:00 , played til 5:00. took a 1 hour break and played to 8:00. Their touring was physically brutal.

Saw the Dead over 100 times in the 80s and early 90s. I've never heard anyone play like Jerry Garcia. He was instantly identifiable and was not afraid to stretch himself musically. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

@@tom_esquire Hi Tom, I lived in Sacramento at the time and I remember that the Cal Expo shows were consistently good. Maybe because the shows were in town and I did not have to drive far, but the parking lot scene was rockin' and the music was always great. The only down side was that, because the weather in Sac was often warm, Bobby would wear his short, shorts. 😂

Since you asked to comment on favorite Jerry solos, the solo in Morning Dew from the Barton Hall 1977 show is up there for me, as well as Loser from that same show. Jerry has such a wonderful blend of country, blues and rock going, that those entire long jam songs really speak volumes of how skilled he was.

There are many unique players that sound like no other...but Jerry was one of a kind, who really could not be defined. He is THE GOAT - accomplished through a history of playing many styles of music that became an amalgamation that was Jerry. He will forever be discussed, studied, analyzed, and admired.

There have been tons of great guitarist, what sets Jerry apart is his completely unique & original style. The way he played over the chord changes, like you mentioned, and was always trying to see what he could get away with, taking chances, pushing himself & those he played with. He gathered his inspirations & invented a genre, inspiring generations to get in a band and jam.

I've had the pleasure of attending 15 or 20 Dead shows, always up front briefly or for the length of the show, always drawn to Jerry. There were a number of times that I directed myself to focus on the other fine players in the band, but I was always drawn back to Jerry. The last time I saw them, Jerry was returning my focus throughout the concert - a gift. And then he left us. I drove on through the Marin hills toward SF and felt his music resonating from every direction on the way. It was exhilarating. I headed for Ashbury and found a crew of Deadheads sitting cross-legged around a sidewalk tree, and joined them in singing Dear Prudence as heartfully as we could. Thank you, Jerry Garcia.

I remember clearly the day, the moment, where I was, and who told me. It devastated me and I still feel the pain of his loss. On the bright side, he left behind so much amazing content that I still get to relive some of the best of his performances as well as many of his duds. He wasn't perfect, but he was perfectly Jerry.

Excellent examination of Jerrys musical genius. He's a composer, performer, producer add inspirin creativity... a true artist. Always using the newest sound technology and the advent of MIDI, songs would only gain finer shape and color. Listen to 'Infrared Roses' or takes of 'Days Between' to imagine where they were going. And least not forget they had to keep this thing on the rails with dance inducing songs thru changing musical eras. Blessed are the tapers, Deadheads and those who discover the treasure. At times Jerry could blow your mind with some pentatonic scale and triade jazzy funky progressions. One of a kind for sure. The dead is Not one of my favorite bands but there are times and sets that are just fucking great. Also the Jerry Garcia band and his music with Grisham yeah! My all time favorite album or bootleg album I guess. Oregon state prison. That is 100% pure Jerry at his best to me

I bought "The Grateful Dead" in March 1967. I was a 17 year old senior in High School. I never looked back. An instant Dead Head. My improvisational skills are very much like Jerry's style. I am still at it 56 years later.

I wish more guitar players and fans. Would understand it is not how many notes your playing. But how much feeling and emotion goes into each note. That is why Jerry was one of the best! And his playing touched so many. What a shame so many try to play like him. Instead finding their own sound. And most sound empty!

@Polka Dot 73. Pig is gone from the repertoire but there are many jazzy selections from Wake of the Flood filling the voids. The China Rider has this really awesome descending run right before they head into Rider. They had such a wealth of material and they were so well rehearsed. Specifically, I've had the 73 St Louis box set shows in the CD player for quite some time now. Can't pull myself to swap it out. Be well

What amazes me most about Jerry's playing is I can listen to the same Stella Blue, same Franklin's Tower etc for the thousandth time and still get chills up my back. It amazes me because I have heard it so many times before and I know the notes but it just reaches down and does something to your soul that cannot be explained or really described with proper justice. The fans of Jerry and the Dead experience that and is why they keep coming back. For those people that cannot experience that feeling, I feel sorry for them because it is a totally unique experience. Also, the thing most people overlook with Jerry and also the Grateful Dead was how important they were to improving live sound with their innovation is PA equipment and instrument customization. This was always for the fans and sounding the best they could and modern performing would not be the same without them. They are also most likely the best self promoting band of all time, it is amazing how many shows you can listen to due to the fact that they allowed taping. Just with those facts alone it should be concluded that the Grateful Dead and Jerry may be the most innovative and influential band and guitarist of all time.

Thanks so much for this. As a longtime Deadhead (first show: 1982) and ardent fan of Mr. Garcia's musical mastery, I have to accept that he does not get the recognition he deserves as an innovative and fascinating guitarist and musician. (Same can be said for Bob Weir as an individual, too.) Your work here, though, and by others can at least help turn on others to what he created through four decades of music. Jerry is my forever inspiration!

Bluegrass, Wales, LOM, Reconstruction, Seals, Saunders, Jerry and whatever friends he could find, JGB, Garcia Grisman. It's just endless. So much beauty. Amidst all of that one of my favorite solos has to be 2/18/71 "A Beautiful Jam". And of course that show was a first for so many things.

I obviously feel that was too, but if you put aside all the technical stuff the band as a whole is not describable in words. Their music has brought me through many hard times, has made bonds w/friends, and is there waiting every day like my personal soundtrack. Something that I feel to be important is not rating a guitarist by their skill, but the willingness to step out of boundaries. Not just play pentatonic licks but be willing to play out there stuff. There's a reason I think Glenn Branca, Robert Fripp, Syd Barrett and Adrian Belew are my favorite guitarists of all time
