Nearly 60 years after Bob Weir helped form the eclectic rock group The Grateful Dead in Palo Alto, Calif., the music of the Dead is being adapted for the concert hall. In this extended interview, correspondent John Blackstone talks with Weir, now 75, about the Dead's music, adapting it to performance by a symphony orchestra, the curious life of a song "critter," and the unfinished business resulting from bandmate Jerry Garcia's passing.

Bob Weir and his mates, who we recognize as the Grateful Dead, are the creative definition of America. The ragged glory. The inventive free thinking. The urban and rural musical representation of our history, folklore, and traditions. A business enterprise that keeps its promise to its customers and works for their best interests. A visualization of the true idea of personal freedom. Whether you like the Grateful Dead or not, there is something for everyone in the music of the Grateful Dead. If you look through the cultural lens, Bob and his mates are as American as there is.

When he says he feels it in his bones, he's describing how we can use our physical body as a way of creating and then triggering memories. Especially in our older age. When you move your body your whole mind comes alive. You can literally forget everything in your life and still remember how to play a music instrument flawlessly or dance like a pro. I have seen hundreds of concerts from, Dizzy Gillespie, Deep Purple, Arlo Guthrie, Ray Charles, Aerosmith, The Who, The Ramones, David Bromberg, George Thorogood, Neil Young, Count Basie, Little Feat and tons more. But seeing Bob and Jerry and Phil and Bill and the rest was just a whole different thing. Got to see the Dead about 50 times, not nearly enough. You had to be there to understand, can't be explained. Live music is where it's at, and the Grateful Dead were the masters of the live event.

I let him keep one, and kept one, appreciating his honesty. free stuff from the GRATEFUL DEAD. HOWEVER, Bob has been playing with some form of the Dead since he was 16 -- Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, The Warlocks, and then The Dead. Consider that he continues to perform to stadium crowds right up until 2022. I would venture that if you could somehow measure actual time on stage -- and total number of fans -- from 1964 to the present, Bob Weir would be somewhere in the top 100. He may indeed be top 10 or even number one. The spirit of J Davis' comment is accurate, but yes, there is no way (at least I don't think there is) to actually measure the total number of fans.

There were good shows and bad. The bad shows were good and the great shows took you to a place that normal folks will never understand. Jerry was at times inconsistent as he struggled, but when Jerry was hurting Bobby pulled them along. The common misconception about the Dead was that they were a party band. There was definitely a party happening, but the reason the Dead is still so popular today is because the songs are absolutely fantastic. They cared about their craft and they cared about how it sounded live to the fans. RIP Jerry, Pig, Keith, Brent , Robert Hunter and John Barlow. Your music lives on . Thank you for a real good time.

As a former record shop co-owner 1976 til 2019 even tho I sold lots of Dead. I had never owned or went to see them. I’m embarrassed to say. I also sold plenty of DeadHead merch. We also was an old fashion head shop. I’m also a song writer and cartoonist but I recently started listening to the Grateful Dead. And it’s great. And as a songwriter I’m totally understand him about songs and the spiritual plan they come from.

I'd give anything to be at 1 more show...sweaty hippies, peculli, pot smell, phil zone/ 💣 ,girls spinning....There is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert!

I just simply love Bob Weir and all the people who have played with the band! There's a spiritual connection to the Grateful Dead for me. My dad bought my older brother the first Dead album back 1966 or 67. Listening to it in those old cassete players driving from Lawrenceville N.J. up to go snow skiing in Maine. I was like 11. Then a few years later when i was 13 my bro took me to see them at the Fillmore East when they where doing their Athem of the Sun album, they came on at like 11 p.m and played till sunrise. Wow. Talk about pro jamming at its best. Now 55 years later they are still the BEST JAM BAND. PEACE UP ALL U 🎶DEADHEAD'S🎶 NOW LIVING IN BALI. 🌴✌🏄‍♂️🏄‍♂️🏄‍♂️🏄‍♂️🏄‍♂️✌🌴
