Was Jesus Good?

People often claim that Jesus was a good man, a sinless man.
I disagree, and here's why.
UPDATE:
The verses I'm talking about are:
Turn the other cheek: Matt 5:39-41 - www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
Killed the out-of-season fig tree: Mark 11:12-14
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
then: Mark 11:20-25
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
(Why not cause the out of season tree to grow figs? Why not a positive miracle? Why kill the tree? Anyone can kill a tree with poison or salt, but only a miracle would cause an out of season tree to grow figs).
Hate your family (Love Jesus before everyone else - like a cult leader):
Luke 14:26
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
Matt 10:37
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
Jesus dissing his mother: Mark 3:31-35
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
Contrast this with Exodus 20:12
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
Eat my flesh, drink my blood: John 6:35-65
www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...
.

Depends on the level of beating. You never know - maybe a good beating is exactly what he needs to wake up. When I was in grade 8, I had a bunch of kids who were picking on me (I was pretty pacifistic). I eventually snapped and punched one of them in the face hard enough to knock him off his feet. The next day he had this huge black eye. And we became friends soon after.

@Ypsteve311 So what is the interpretation of "eating his flesh" and "drinking his blood"? What are those two activities metaphors of? And please don't give me something stupid and lame.

@maxglobz Why are you quoting Luke 14:26 to me? That's one of the arguments *I* use against Christians. Do you think that somehow supports your position? Do you understand what he's saying?
@OccamKant

@Ypsteve311 As for research, what research? I've read the bible a lot. I'm quite familiar with it. I'm not going to bother reading "theologists" opinions on the bible - they have nothing more to go on than I do - we're using the same source material. Their opinions are no more valid than mine, if we're studying the same thing. Of course, if you can provide a way to actually perform tests (real tests, not "well, you didn't have enough faith" fail tests), then I'll change my tune.

You're right. It's so much better to let the criminals take the eyes of the innocent without any kind of punishment or prevention. You can find a trite saying about anything, on opposite sides: Look before you leap, he who hesitates is lost. Just because you have a convenient, cute and glib saying up your sleeve doesn't make you wise, or right.

Your argument was that I was taking this verse out of context. That would mean that verses BEFORE or AFTER the "love me more than your family" would clarify the issue - so please tell me which verses before or after these particular ones give context to his idea that is different than what I am saying.
@OccamKant

@Ypsteve311 "I'm guessing no matter what i said you would think it was 'stupid and lame'." I'm just really tired of getting stupid answers to these tough questions. So give it a shot. Tell me what you think the eating of flesh and drinking of blood is a metaphor for, and WHY you think they're a metaphor. Think about what it means to eat and drink - you are consuming something, you are destroying something in the process of incorporating it into yourself, and eventually crapping it out.

Exactly what I thought when I came across that passage. Jesus then (in mark 11:22-24) uses his magical killing of the tree as an example of what other people can do if they have faith, and pray. He reminds me of emperor palpatine - zapping the tree, then saying "You can do this too!" Anyway, I just thought it was a wrong thing for JC to do. If he wanted to do a miracle, why not a positive one, like causing figs to grow? Why kill?

@xsuicidesadnessx I'm not sure I understand your "clarification". It seems obvious to me that Jesus was saying that to be a Christian you have to leave your family & friends, sell all your good and become a wandering street preacher for him. That's all supported in the quotes you mentioned and also others (Store up not treasures on earth, but in heaven; it is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle, etc). But I don't see how you arrived at your interpretation.

@maxglobz Well, how did you get ink poisoning and suffer brain damage? Ink poisoning doesn't sound like a real thing, since there is no such thing as "ink" - there are various chemicals that we use for ink, but if you were poisoned by one of them you would be poisoned by that chemical, not "ink". Anyway - I'm still trying to figure out if you're a troll or serious. I hope for your sake you're just a troll.

An appropriate reaction that didn't escalate things would be to fight the guy in a non-lethal way and then punish him with jail time, or service, ro something. But that's not what jesus said. He said turn the other cheek. Offer no resistance, offer no punishment. Without punishment, you are encouraging immoral and dangerous behaviour. Why would this guy avoid beating people in the future if he never suffers any consequences?

@leroyal57 "BUT ONE DAY EVERY KNEE WILL BOW DOWN. " You don't have to shout. I hope you don't shout at everyone in person, because that would make you really annoying. So you're going to try to convince me through the use of fear? Ignore everything I say, just try to fear me into it? Did Jesus preach fear? Is that how he tried to get converts? I thought he was supposed to be about love. Personally, what I would find convincing would be enlightenment, not "faith" and "fear".

@NeoNovi I don't hate people, and so far I haven't had to fight anyone. But you bet your ass if I or someone I loved was attacked I would respond with violence. Have you ever practice'd Jesus' message of "turn the other cheek"? ie - you are physically struck, and rather than defending yourself, you just offer your other cheek to the guy. Until you do that, don't bleat to me about how it's a good philosophy.

@OccamKant I wasn't going to suggest Theologians, though that is where I would go for some of these ethical questions, especially why Jesus didn't heal all disease (which is a fair question). More though I would suggest Biblical Scholarship. I think most of your issues come from a lack of understanding of background, context, and language - none of which can be answered by just reading an English Translation of the Bible.
@Rynours77
@Rynours77 13 лет назад
@glower125 Writing in all caps does not help support your argument, but instead makes you appear to be shouting. The only reason why people shout their arguments is because they are attempting to force their own views and beliefs onto another person. There have been examples of people using this same strategy, such as Hitler, cult leaders, and others who only wish to control others which is a form of fascism. But of course you probably take what I just said as a complement, as Hitler killed Jews

@FenderMetalShredder "Of course I wouldn't get pleasure out of harming an innocent person." Caring vs not caring about the consequences/fallout of your actions is what makes you moral. You care, therefore you are moral. Immorality isn't "sinning against God" - it's about doing harm, or threatening harm to others or their property. As long as you're not doing that, you're moral. It's only the busybody prudes who like to tell others how to live their lives who have puritanical ideas of morals.
@FenderMetalShredder
@FenderMetalShredder 13 лет назад
@OccamKant My own definition of morals are very effective in the same way the standard definition is; I'm simply not entitled to follow standard morals in situations where they do not apply (I.E. were there someone threatening a loved one I would not hesitate to kill them). My morals are how to keep myself alive and happy, not how to please others.

@xsuicidesadnessx Did you mean to contradict yourself with two back to back sentences? "If something is not written they do not believe it. Everything can not be written." So in other words, you are saying that there are things that are real & true, but cannot be written, and therefore are not believed by Christians? Perhaps this isn't a contradiction as much as a statement about the thinking process of Christians?
@aaronwilson8691
@aaronwilson8691 11 лет назад
I'll admit, I've looked and I can't find any verses that would advocate reacting in any way that you wouldn't consider cowardly, I'll give you that. But at the same time, self-defense doesn't not always involve violent reactions. One can show resistance and combat mistreatment through other means.
@OccamKant
@OccamKant 16 лет назад
Well, imagine a mugging taking place. If you just give over, the mugger wins. Or a hostage situation. By giving in, you encourage more kidnappers. A denial of power is to deny power - in fighting terms, it's to disable your opponent, so they can no longer attack you. THAT is the ultimate denial of power. Rewarding them for attacking you isn't exactly a denial. If they wanted to make you afraid, and you weren't, then you denied them. If they wanted to beat you up, and you let them, they win.
@OccamKant
@OccamKant 14 лет назад
@AndrewBickle My point was that by letting someone hit you, in fact, encouraging them to do so, you are teaching them antisocial behavior, and that is immoral. Social behaviours are moral, and antisocial behaviors are immoral. Teaching & encouraging immorality is itself immoral. Teaching someone to hurt others is immoral - hence, "turn the other cheek" is immoral.

(cont) to conflicts, as in the long run that's what resolves an issue. It's not a message of passive non-resistance, but of non-violence. You have to look deeper than just the face value of the words. Other examples of Jesus advocating this is when he said "But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" and "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets".
@aaronwilson8691
@aaronwilson8691 11 лет назад
(cont) thrown in frustration or anger, an insult (since striking people across the cheek was considered a horrible insult back then), a gesture perceived as a strike by the victim but in truth was accidental, or any other number possible scenarios you can come up with. If your first reaction is to strike back, how can you know there isn't another way to resolve the issue?

He also killed hundreds of fish to prove he had supernatural power to ensure people would follow him. Fishermen couldn't catch a single fish all day and he comes and almost drags their boats down into the water from how much fish he forced to commit suicide... even though suicide is sinful and considered a 1 way trip to hell for not trusting in god. Plus to do that to your own creations, you not only doomed the fish, you also made it worse for the fishermen in the future since majority of the fish are now gone, rotting if not eaten. Then we have the very moment where he said women were equal to dogs, that's sexist - how is that good in any way?
@Ypsteve311
@Ypsteve311 14 лет назад
@OccamKant The best way to judge if that is what he was saying is to look at his disciples actions following those instructions. No one committed cannibalism. It's silly to imply it was a possible meaning.
@OccamKant
@OccamKant 14 лет назад
@Ypsteve311 No - I never said that Jesus healing people was bad - I said that Jesus only healing like 5 people out of the millions who are suffering was bad. If you had a magic wand and could eliminate disease today, would you? Because that's what we're trying to do with medical science (eliminate disease, not exercise magic). If you could do it in one fell swoop, wouldn't that be great? JC could have done it supposedly, and didn't. What does that say about him?

I agree that it would be pretty strange (and unprecedented in other parts of the bible), but Jesus DID reiterate the statement several times. And when the jews present reacted with shock, he just reiterated it again. They reacted pretty much as I did -- how could he be inciting cannibalism? But instead of Jesus clarifying it as some kind of metaphor, he just repeated it. It certainly SOUNDS like an incitement to cannibalism. Like that monty python skit, with the men in the lifeboat.

What *is* right and wrong, if it has nothing to do with other people? Imagine you're living on a sailboat, and never touch land. You fish for your food. Is it even *possible* for you to do anything "wrong"?
@OccamKant
@OccamKant 14 лет назад
@Ypsteve311 "he's a bad guy for punishing a tree (How is a tree innocent or guilty anyway?)" It's not an innocent or guilty thing. The fig tree is a living organism that has as much right to life as anything else - killing it indiscriminently is at best vandalism, and at worst a wanton disregard for life, PARTICULARLY since if JC was really divine, he could have done a positive miracle instead, like cause it to grow more fruit overnight.
@OccamKant
@OccamKant 11 лет назад
There is a huge difference between deciding a tree is no good because it doesn't bear fruit in season, and saying that it should bear fruit out of season. One is reasonable, one is stupid. Jesus took the stupid route. No amount of logical gymnastics and tap-dancing will get around that simple fact.

@FenderMetalShredder I don't actually mean that you are a sociopath, just that not caring about others is a sociopathic point of view. For example, if you could do something for your own pleasure but others would get hurt because of it, would you still do it? If so, you are a sociopath. If not, then you are not. In other words, the key factor is whether or not you are a danger to innocent people around you.

(cont) that sermon. As for the Blood and flesh part, that obviously wasn't literal. Things such as drinking blood and cannibalism are forbidden under Old Testament law, which Jesus subscribed to for the most part. Going about such acts would also likely involve other actions that go against Jesus' main teachings. The meaning behind this statement was to illustrate making Jesus a natural and inseparable part of one's life. It's emphasizing faith in him, not cannibalism.

Of course, if you're willing to not just read between the lines but instead throw out the text entirely and make your own shit up, you can make the book say whatever you want. I prefer to work with what is actually there. As for striking back, why the hell should I look for another way to solve the issue when someone else has already thrown the first punch? If someone punches me I'm going to knock him on his ass, not see if there is a "peaceful resolution".

@OccamKant I have no problem with playing around with an idea... having questions about Jesus and his 'goodness', I just don't see how what you posted really says anything about it. You chose: Forgiveness, an object lesson, and a metaphor to say that Jesus wasn't good. You even suggest that Jesus healing people is somehow bad. It all just seems silly, unthoughtful, and unresearched... again I guess if you are just playing around with ideas its no big deal. If you get serious about them -research

It's not a parable. A parable is a story - ie, something that could start with 'once upon a time, there was...". Jesus says "turn the other cheek", which is a command, not a story. I don't see anyway to take his command as anything but literal, since that is precisely what he says: Don't fight back, offer your other cheek. This is a command, written as plainly as it is possible to write, not some metaphor or allegory.

(cont) doesn't have to be part of punishment. That being said, if you take Jesus' message in that line as a call for non-violence and resisting the urge of vengeful behavior as apposed to "let people beat up on you", that doesn't stand in contradiction of having consequences for one's actions. (There other elements of Christian theology on a whole that do, but that's a different discussion)

individual. It's likely that in those days, the physical had an even greater focus as it was the most immediate aspect of life for the common man. Therefore the metaphor still works in the sense that it is urging to become one with with Christ, body and soul. Now as for the choice of words, I agree, it's not exactly a pleasant image. He probably could've gotten his point across in a less unsettling way. If you were just taking issue with his choice of metaphor, then that's fine. But that isn't

I doubt this is the first time you've ever seen a statement with a greater meaning than the literal implications. We do it all the time. I'm not saying it isn't a radical idea. For someone who claims to be anointed by god to "preach good news to the poor" "to proclaim freedom for the prisoners" and "to release the oppressed", that would be pretty out of character. Also we aren't given the context of the strike. You assume it implies someone is jumping you. It can also mean a single punch

@FenderMetalShredder "My own definition of morals ..." What is the point of using a word that everyone understands but defining it in your own special way? If you do that, then no one will actually understand what you are talking about, because you mean something different than everyone else. Morals are rules for social behaviour, end of story. They're how we get along with others, how not to piss others off, etc. You cannot be immoral if you are by yourself, and not impacting others.

Well first, turning the other cheek is not a peaceful solution, it's a path to suicide. If someone is already punching you, the only way to bring peace about is to stop him from punching you, which involves actively defending yourself. To encourage violence (which is what passive non-resistence does) is immoral, since it will make that person more likely to commit violent acts against others. If you want to be beaten, fine, but don't inflict it on others.

(cont) The message was to have faith in him and to make his teachings as important and as naturally part of your life as would be caring for your body. Looking at it from that perspective, even if he did believe that mind was the essence of self, I can see why Jesus might use a more physically oriented metaphor as apposed to a mental one since it would effectively convey the message to people with more physical outlooks on life. Now did he succeed? Well... given the Jews reactions, probably not

Why did he kill the tree when he could've just made it grow figs? Isn't got suppose to be all-powerful?

The Tree bore no fruit, it's a parable of people or Christians not baring or producing fruit I believe. JESUS IS GOOD & GOD

The point is, people should fight back, defend themselves. If she had bear spray, or mace, or a tazer or something, or even if she was trained in martial arts, she would maybe be able to fight him off. I'm saying that that is better than what Jesus said, which is in essence to give permission for the violence. Abominable.

As for drinking blood & eating flesh, obviously he meant it metaphorically, since he didn't actually cut a chunk of himself off and offer it to his buddies, but it's still a sick metaphor, since what makes you YOU is not your flesh and blood but your mind. You can't incorporate what makes someone what they are by eating them, even metaphorically, but you can incorporate them into you by listening to their ideas and conversing with them, but that's not what he said.

@andrewprofit "Well lets look at the facts the USA is arguable the most christian nation on the Earth and it has the largest military on the Earth." And? What's your point? That the US Military has been used repeatedly over the years to commit immoral acts against other countries? Like toppling the democratic government of Iran in the 50's, like the attack on Iraq recently (on a bed of lies - WMD? Where?), all around south america, africa, etc. Not getting your point.

"Eat my flesh and drink my blood is spiritual". That literally makes no sense. None.

The word "hate" really isn't that important. The point is that Jesus is elevating himself ABOVE your family and your own life. In other words, you should abandon all those around you, and even your own wants and comforts, to follow him. In other words, leave everyone you know, and everything you have behind, join a monastary, take a vow of poverty and devote your life to Jesus. THAT is what loving him ABOVE all else really means.

@andrewprofit "...because of the pressure of the outsiders aka society those outside the dispute did the bully stop. " So it's the external pressure of the group that discouraged the bullying, but if it was just you and the bully, and the bully punched you and you presented the other side of your head, you bet he'd punch you again, and enjoy it, and maybe go on to punch more people. It's called conditioning, and it's been studied for ages. But anyway - conditioning for evil IS evil.

I'm really not sure what the point of overcoming your natural defence response would be. I guess one reason not to respond in kind is to let the justice system take action. I am a firm believer in a functioning justice system. But to turn the other cheek and offer no other resistance or punishment? Idiocy.

I'm sure that MLK did not say to the racists "Attack me some more! Here, attack my kids too". He fought back. He didn't necessarily fight with weapons, but he fought back. That's the point. Not accepting socially unacceptable behaviour. I have no idea what barbers have to do with curing the sick. If jesus could eliminate some disease, why not eliminate all disease? And as for CS Lewis. I don't care if he was an atheist. I used to be the pope! Now I'm an atheist. What do you think of that?

@JesusLuvsU75 Eric Clapton is a genius guitar player, so yeah, I would accept the invitation. What was jesus good at? He didn't say anything particularly wise, and in fact he said some pretty stupid things. And supposedly he had magical powers to heal people, but he didn't say that if you became a Christian you'd have magical healing powers (well, actually he did, but no one does, so I guess he's a liar too). Or are you saying Jesus could play a guitar?

They the Christians claim that he Jesus forgave all sins but he DID NOT eliminate the sinful nature and evil itself !

/Anyway, I just thought it was a wrong thing for JC to do. If he wanted to do a miracle, why not a positive one, like causing figs to grow? Why kill?/ Good Question. Hmmmm ... I never bothered asking that to my christian friends. Another instance was when He rebuked His disciples for stirring his rest when a storm raged. Wonder what He could've said if they hadn't waked him up and they all drowned?

Why on earth do you think that someone who is beating the crap out of someone else would "stop to think" if the victim isn't defending themselves? If the aggressor wanted to pummel someone, they're not going to stop simply because they're not being resisted. They'll pummel that much more. If just doing nothing would actually stop violent crime, then all a girl would have to do to defend herself from being raped is... nothing? Are you serious?

Oh, Emo is a kid's fashion these days -- they dress up all gothic (lots of blacks, droopy black hair) and act all sad about how tough their lives are, and how no-one understands them. They generally hate their family, and live for the moment (just like Jesus!) Just google "emo" and I'm sure you'll find lots of references. :) It's also on wikipedia.

The quotes of Jesus in the bible really do make him look like some kind of loony cult leader. * Encourage bad behaviour by rolling over. * Don't work for a living. * Sell everything and give it away. * Hate your family (or at least diminish their importance below that of the cult leader) * Disobey the law. It's all about how you look at him. Christians have a preconcieved notion of what he's all about. And it's wrong.

AH yes, the lesson of the 10 virgins, wherein we learn that the biblical definition of marriage is NOT "one man, one woman", but instead "one man, many women". It's cool, one of my favorite lessons.
